On April 6, 2025, conservative Friedrich Merz was sworn in as Germany's tenth chancellor. He leads a coalition of his center-right CDU_CSU alliance with the center-left SPD, two rivals united by a 144-page coalition agreement. Its top focus? Business, growth and competitiveness. What opportunities does this political shift offer for international companies looking to invest or expand in Germany? We get some answers from Julia Braune, CEO of Germany Trade & Invest (GTAI). Our guest: Julia Braune has been CEO of GTAI since February 2023. The organization – the Federal Republic of Germany's international business promotion agency – is responsible helps foreign companies expand to and in Germany and German-based companies do business abroad.
The new German government's international climate policy
Russia's ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine, sharpening Sino-US rivalry, and doubts about US security guarantees have left Europe searching for ballast. Against this backdrop, a new German government led by Friedrich Merz promises to “restore leadership.” Dr Nicolai von Ondarza explores Berlin's concrete goals for developing EU policies, defence, and transatlantic ties, as well as its coalition-building strategies with France, Poland, the UK, and smaller member states such as Ireland. He also addresses how a resurgent AfD might constrain Germany's room for manoeuvre. Part of our #WhatsNext series, which sees experts debate, discuss and analyse what's next for public policy as political and social change sweeps the globe. Dr Nicolai von Ondarza is the Head of the EU/Europe Research Division at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP) in Berlin and an Associate Fellow at Chatham House. His research focuses on Germany's role in Europe, EU politics and institutions, EU–UK relations as well as democracy in Europe. As part of his work, he has consulted the German Government, the Bundestag, the UK government, the European Parliament and the European Commission.
What should we expect from the new German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, in terms of foreign, security, and defense policy? Is he prepared to face US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin? Would Germany defend its allies in the event of a Russian attack, especially in a scenario where US support is uncertain? I discussed these questions – and more – with defense analyst Rafael Loss from the European Council on Foreign Relations. Listen to our conversation. And if you enjoy what I do, please support me on Ko-fi! Thank you. https://ko-fi.com/amatisak

German voters ousted Chancellor Olaf Scholz and his Social Democrats in yesterday's election. The new chancellor will most likely be Friedrich Merz, the leader of Germany's conservative CDU party. Mr. Merz vowed on Monday to build a conservative-moderate ruling majority. That didn't surprise anybody. It is what he said about NATO that shocked many people. The German conservative, who is not a fan of Donald Trump, said Europe must build up its own military defenses as he had “no illusions at all about what is coming out of America.” Mr. Merz went on to say that NATO could be radically different, possibly dissolved, by June 2025.Rick Wiles, Doc Burkhart. In late 2023, American pharma giant Eli Lilly and Company announced plans to build a $2.5 billion production facility in western Germany. It's one of the largest investments in the sector ever. The plant will at first produce its new tirzepatide drugs for diabetes and obesity. Demand is expected to soar. The major expansion comes as Berlin is reforming the rules governing German pharma, with a key aim of boosting drug production within the country. Our Guests: Gerd Kräh is associate VP of government affairs with Eli Lilly Deutschland. He is one of the most experienced media and political affairs executives in the German pharmaceutical industry. Marcus Schmidt is director of the chemicals and health division at Germany Trade & Invest. Erinnerungskämpfe: Neues deutsches Geschichtsbewusstsein (Ditzingen: Reclam, 2023) is a new, provocative volume on German memory cultures and politics edited by Jürgen Zimmerer. What can be loosely translated as Memory Wars: New German Historical Consciousness is a collection of chapters that lay bare a mosaic of a diverse German memory landscape as well as the major debates and turning points by which it is continuously shaped. It is subdivided in five sections together encompassing 23 chapters and covers German Empire and colonialism, National Socialism and the Second World War, the Holocaust and multidirectional memory, East/West Germany and reunification, and, finally, today's Berlin Republic. This volume gains in relevance by the day and shows how the German past(s) and the way they are debated, commemorated, and weaponized today and by whom has real-life, if not existential, consequences. It is far from an exclusively German matter. Memory Wars: New German Historical Consciousness is of interest for all those who critically engage with the instrumentalization of memory in ongoing cultural wars in other national contexts as well, such as the heated debates and rightwing attacks in the United States and elsewhere surrounding fields such as Critical Race Theory, Gender or Queer Studies that emerge out of the White Supremacist backlash and the concomitant increase in racism, trans- and homophobia. Jürgen Zimmerer is Professor of Global History and the head of the research center “Hamburg's (post-)colonial legacy” at the University of Hamburg. He served as the founding president of the International Network of Genocide Scholars for twelve years until 2017 and was the Senior Editor of the Journal of Genocide from 2005 to 2011. His research interests include German Colonialism, Comparative Genocide studies, Colonialism and the Holocaust, and Environmental Violence and Genocide and, for the specific German context, his work has been crucial in revealing the deep connections between the Holocaust and German colonialism – up until that point two German histories of violence hegemonically thought of as ontologically different, if thought together at all. Melissa and Steve join Drew to talk about German New Medicine, also known as Germanic Healing Knowledge, which was started by Dr. Hamer. Dr. Hamer noticed a pattern that a specific conflict preceded the development of specific types of cancer. He also discovered five biological laws of nature after reviewing 10,000 patient cases. A conflict shock is something that catches an individual off guard, and the body always does something that is sensible and meaningful in response. The body's adaptation can be traced back to a conflict shock if the response occurred absent an injury, deficiency, or poisoning. Sagi Damti started coaching the German Bouldering Team in the beginning of 2022, as a part of the new DAV coaching team. This is Part 2 of my interview with him, where we talk about his new job at the DAV. Sagi says, how he perceived the German Climbing Team while he was still a coach in Israel, how he approaches his work with the germans, about pressure in his new job and how the work within the new DAV team is structured. We recorded this interview 2 days before the Worldcup in Brixen and before the Worldcup in Innsbruck, where Yannick Flohe and Hannah Meul both showed a stunning finals performance. Yannick won in Brixen and Hannah made second place in Bouldering both in Brixen and Innsbruck. So we did not know this yet, while we were talking. Believe it or not, I've been doing these reviews for over a year at this point and it's been lovely watching how much it's all grown. This originally started with me desperately wanting to review the Criterion Collection's The Complete Films of Agnès Varda boxset and it has grown into something I couldn't imagine. Over the past 12 months, this has gone from just the lovely folks over at Kino Lorber and the Criterion Collection to also working with other lovely folks over at Arrow Video, Fun City Editions, GKIDS, Code Red, MVD Entertainment, Synapse Films, and Cohen Film Collection to help bring awareness to the wide world of well-curated and pristinely-packed cinema you could experience from the comfort and safety of your home with no more than a TV and a Blu-ray player (no internet required). This started as a way to keep people engaged with repertory and arthouse titles while theaters were closed and tech companies continued to gobble up the scope of cinema, but it's now evolved into blog discovery and being intentional and passionate about cinema I consume. It's been great hearing all the feedback over the past 12 months and getting to hear from people who found this column by chance. I love doing it and I hope you guys still like listening to and reading it. So what better way to celebrate a one-year anniversary than with the addition of two new distributors! From the UK but bearing “All Region” gifts comes Imprint Films with its releases of Basil Dearden's penultimate film, The Assassination Bureau starring late greats Oliver Reed, Telly Savalas, and of course Diana Rigg, a romp about assassins who clearly don't understand there are more efficient ways to kill a person than bombs (more on that later). They also have released a handsome boxset containing both the 1951 Anthony Asquith/Michael Redgrave and 1994 Mike Figgis/Albert Finney adaptations of Terrence Rattigan's The Browning Version. Also making their debut is the long-awaited and oft-asked-for Vinegar Syndrome! We're starting off with their exclusive release of the very exciting reconstruction of the nearly lost and soon-to-be-cult-favorite New York Ninja. We also have our usual suspects with Kino Lorber giving us releases of director John G. Avildsen and composer Bill Conti's unlikely but welcome follow-up to Rocky, Slow Dancing in the Big City starring unlikely romantic lead Paul Sorvino. John Huston's Freud biopic starring Montgomery Clift and Susannah York makes a welcome appearance, which prompts me to once again think about what makes a biopic work artistically in the first place. There is also the season 1 release of Rod Serling's horror-tinged Twilight Zone follow-up Night Gallery. Arrow Video brings us two welcome releases for cinephiles who have their sights set on lesser-known Japanese genre cinema: Gamera director Noriaki Yuasa's adaptation of Kazuo Umezu's manga “Hebi shōjo (Snake Girl)” into a horror film aimed to traumatize children everywhere, The Snake Girl and the Silver Haired Witch, and there's also the genre-bending mash-up that is Shinji Somai's Sailor Suit and Machine Gun, which somehow threads the needle between quiet coming-of-age drama, yakuza movie, and Japanese “idol movie.” Finally, we have my pick of the month from Fun City Editions with their recent release of Christopher Petit's New German cinema-inspired and new wave-scored British road movie Radio On, a gem I hope won't remain hidden for long. After a year of doing this, I hope some of you have found something you've enjoyed that you would have otherwise missed or overlooked, and if you haven't yet, I hope this month can change that. You can read the rest of the written reviews on the IU Cinema Blog, here: https://blogs.iu.edu/aplaceforfilm/
