It was supposed to be “the cheerful Games.” That was the motto of the 1972 Munich Olympics, which was meant to usher in a peaceful new era on the world stage after the horrors in Germany just three decades earlier. Instead, on September 5th 1972, just after 4am. eight men in tracksuits jumped the fence at Munich's Olympic Village, armed with rifles and grenades. These men belonged to Black September — a group associated with the Palestine Liberation Organization – and their plan was to take the Israeli Olympic team hostage and hold them at gunpoint until 328 prisoners detained by Israel were released. The standoff ended in confusion and bloodshed. All eleven hostages died, as did a policeman and five members of the Black September group. This, despite media reports – broadcast to 900m people around the world – that the prisoners had been rescued. Today on Script Apart, we talk with the writer-director, Tim Fehlbaum, and co-writer, Moritz Binder, of a newly Oscar-nominated drama that contemplates what the Munich massacre might tell us about media complicity in acts of terrorism. The pair wrote this film with writer Alex David focused not on depicting the overall events of that terrible day – Steven Spielberg covered that with 2005's Munich, written by past Script Apart guests Eric Roth and Tony Kushner. Instead, Tim and Mortiz's angle on the story is through the American sports broadcasters who suddenly find themselves tasked with covering the situation live as it unfolds – a world first. Never before had an event like this played out on television as it happened. Today, we're very much used to consuming terrible atrocities as they happen on our digital devices. But in 1972, such a thing was unheard of. September 5 – which stars a great ensemble cast – puts the ethical questions involved with live-streaming terror under the microscope. It's a period piece that resonates with disturbing power today not least because, since the film was finished, a harrowing new chapter in the history of violence between Israel and Palestine has been written. Maybe, the film seems to wonder, when you have a form of media that rewards being first and being loudest instead of being accurate, any type of live coverage is doomed to inflame and exploit rather than inform. This episode, as ever, contains spoilers.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. The film September 5 is the story of the ABC Sports broadcasting team covering the terrorist attack at the 1972 Munich Olympics. It was the first Olympics to be broadcast live, when Israeli Olympians were taken hostage at the Olympic Village by Palestinian terrorists. The sports reporting team, initially focused on covering the games, finds themselves suddenly thrust into the role of live news reporters as the hostage situation unfolds. They have to grapple with the terrifying events while trying to inform the world about what was occuring. September 5 focuses on the pivotal role of media coverage in shaping public understanding of the crisis. While waiting for financing for September 5, cinematographer Markus Förderer and director Tim Fehlbaum spent three years researching and scouting for the film. They obtained permission to shoot at the Munich Olympic village, to fully set the film in the historical context. The television studio and control room were all built on soundstages. Once September 5 was finally green-lit, Markus had only a tight two-week prep period, during which he experimented with his own lens tuning and modifications. An avid lens hobbyist, Markus took some lenses apart, adding dust, smudges and fingerprints to some of the elements to give the film an authentic period look. They shot digitally on a RED V-Raptor on two cameras, with Markus operating one of the cameras himself. It was important to director Tim Fehlbaum to create a very claustrophobic feeling within the windowless television studio. "Tim was adamant that we only show what the characters would have seen," Markus explains. "The TV monitors became their windows to the outside world." The film blends original footage with real, archival news films and meticulously recreated scenes. Markus wanted the visual style to reflect the era, while maintaining a contemporary relevance. Both Markus and Fehlbaum were influenced by the look and feel of Natural Born Killers. The use of analog technology such as flickering fluorescent lights and TV monitors became an important tool for Markus to create a state of heightened tension. "If we flicker these monitors, which we use as a key light source in the dark control room, the whole image will pulse," Markus says. "It looked really crazy, but it was fascinating. We synced it so it looks right on camera. As the tension gets higher and higher in certain scenes, like when we see the masked man on the balcony, we dynamically ramp up the flicker frequency of our film lights." The evolution of special tactics in the United States is a complicated story whose roots lie in the violent social and political environment of the late 1960s. Highly unusual and televised events like the Texas tower sniper in 1966 and the Munich Massacre in 1972 created the need to develop special units to respond to events that were beyond the capabilities of patrol officers. While Southern California often receives all the credit for the development of special tactics, because of the efforts of LAPD D-Platoon and LASD SEB, it is important to understand that the west coast was not the only region trying to develop special tactics teams. In fact, by the early 1980's there were numerous regions who were all following parallel paths of development albeit in different stages. In these regions, tactical associations began to form that were focused on sharing information and training among agencies. One of these early associations was the Texas Tactical Police Officers Association (TTPOA) which was formed in 1984 and this year is celebrating its 40th anniversary. This seemed a perfect time to do an episode on the evolution and history of SWAT in Texas as well as the history and impact of TTPOA.My guests today are three influential figures in TTPOA.Lt. Dan Colasanto is the current president of TTPOA. Dan is a 30-year veteran of the Garland Police Department with 28 of those years spent on the SWAT team. Dan has worked in Patrol, Narcotics and SWAT and is also a graduate of the United States Military Academy and an Army veteran. In February 2021, Dan earned a Master of Arts degree in Homeland Security with a Concentration in Counter-Terrorism from American Military University. Dan was the SWAT Team Supervisor during the May 3, 2015 ISIS inspired terrorist attack in Garland, TX. Dan also serves as the Intelligence and Terrorism Chair for the NTOA.Paul Ford has experience spanning both government and private sectors. Paul's diverse roles include being a police officer, instructor, writer, publisher, developer of numerous police training programs, and sales and marketing executive. Paul began his law enforcement career in 1985, assuming roles in patrol, SWAT, and as a detective. Paul spent almost a decade on the Austin Texas SWAT team serving as the unit's training coordinator and team leader. He is the recipient of more than 60 commendations, including three for meritorious conduct. In the 1990s, Paul played a pivotal role in reshaping and expanding TTPOA where he served as Secretary, Vice President, and Editor of Command Magazine. His dedication earned him the Association's prestigious Excellence Award in 1999. In 2001 Paul transitioned to the private sector where he has held positions at Defense Technology and he is currently the Vice President of Sales and Marketing for CSI, known for their CTS and Penn Arms brands.Sandy Wall is a true legend in Texas tactical community. In October 2023, Hamas terrorists massacred Israeli civilians as well as many foreign tourists in an unprecedented attack. Consequently, the Israeli government under Netanyahu launched retaliatory strikes on Gaza with manifold civilian deaths. Over 50 years ago, a similar attack at the Munich Olympics also led to severe repercussions for Palestinian civilians. I am rebroadcasting this episode which was among the most listened to during the last two years, with the hope that 10, 15, or 50 years from now this complex and ongoing conflict may find a peaceful and equitable resolution for all parties involved. In September 1972, the Olympic Motto “Faster, Higher, Stronger,” became an irrelevance as the world's greatest sporting event was ravaged by violence and bloodshed as the Palestinian Black September group massacred 11 members of the Israeli delegation. In this episode, I discuss the Munich Massacre. Why it happened, how it happened, and whether it could have been prevented. Music by Pixabay
The US doesn't experience much terrorism, we've had several attacks on US soil, but for the most part, we've had far less than other countries experience. In modern day terrorist attacks, the goal is to spread fear by directing violence against innocent victims. 50 years ago this month marks one of the darkest moments in sports history – the Munich Massacre, when Palestinian terrorists murdered 11 members of the Israeli delegation at the 1972 Summer Olympics. Shaul Ladany, now 86, was one of the Israeli athlete's who survived the massacre, just as he had survived World War II and the Holocaust when he was a child. Ladany's life is explored in the new E60 documentary, “The Survivor.” Jeremy Schaap traveled to Israel and Germany to profile a man of unmatched endurance and perseverance, someone who still competes to this day after surviving the worst horrors of the 20th century. “The Survivor” will debut on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN, and will be available on ESPN+ following the premiere. It's called the darkest day in Olympic history. Five decades on from the Munich massacre, where eleven Israelis tragically lost their lives, Germany has agreed to pay compensation and establish a Commission to answer the many questions that remain. The story of the Munich '72 Olympics is not over. as this week's commemoration has proved.

Sept. 6th is the anniversary of the horrible 1972 Munich Olympics massacre, where 11 Israeli Olympic athletes and trainers were brutally murdered by Arab Muslim terrorists, led by Yassar Arafat and Mahmoud Abbas. The fact that our leaders are silent and complacent that neither Arafat nor Abbas apologized for that, and other horrific terror attacks, and instead have accepted them as potential "peace partners", even as they continued to support and finance terror, is a blot of shame upon all of our leaders, global, Israeli and Jewish leaders.

During the second week of the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, 11 Israeli coaches and athletes were taken hostage at 4:30 am on September 5, 1972. The perpetrators, Black September, were a Palestinian militant group who were motivated by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. After taking the Israeli team hostage, Black September demanded that 234 Palestinian prisoners be released from Israeli jails. During the subsequent break in, two members of the Israeli team were shot and killed. During the stand off, West German authorities tried to persuade the attackers. The also tried, and failed, to rescue the hostages. At 10pm, an agreement was made for the perpetrators and hostages to be helicoptered to a nearby airport and sent to Egypt, where the hostages could be held prisoner. This was all a ruse. When the helicopters arrived at the airport, all hell broke lose. Because there was no planning and tactics, the rescue was unsuccessful as there was no communication and the snipers were not actually sniper marksmen. A gunfight was well underway when the lead perpetrator turned and started shooting hostages dead. He then pulled a pin on a grenade and blew the helicopter up, leaving the hostages burnt beyond recognition. In total 17 were killed (11 hostages, 5 Black September members, and 1 police officer). West German police are to blame as they ignored prior warnings from others.

The year 2022 marks the 50th anniversary of the Munich Massacre, during which Palestinian terrorists kidnapped and killed 11 members of the Israeli sports team at the Munich Summer Olympics in 1972. On this occasion, Prof. David Clay Large of the University of San Francisco, spoke about the massacre and his research on the topic in December 2021. Prof. Large outlined the course of events, analyzed local and international reactions and also spoke about the legacies of this massacre. He was introduced by Prof. Michael Brenner, who is the chair of Jewish History and Culture at LMU Munich. The lecture was part of the annual Yerushalmi lecture series here in Munich, which presents current research to a wider public. It is supported by the Center for Culture of the Jewish Community of Munich.

There have been three fatal terror attacks on the Olympic Games since 1970, starting with the Munich Olympics. Is Tokyo at risk? With the specter of Covid19 overshadowing the Olympics, Tokyo called for a state of emergency and enacted precautions from banning spectators to manufacturing anti-sex beds. But, little is known as to what precautions they've taken to 'ban terrorists'. The Munich Massacre, at the 1972 Olympics, dispelled the imageof innocence that had surrounded the Games until then. Here,Palestinian terrorists swooped into the Athletes' Village and killed Israeli athletes and coaches. Tokyo2020 has made headlines regarding terrorists, as well, but not (at least so far) in regard to violence. There is a call for Iranian athletes to be banned by the International Olympics Committee because of their abuse of athletes - including with executions, and their allowing an actual terrorist to participate and win!You will also hear about competing theories as to whether the Olympics is a more compelling target for terrorists or a lesser one, and what makes it so. This year, the IOC finally - after 49 years of requests from the Munich victims' families - agreed to honor them in the Opening Ceremony - to the displeasure of terrorists - making Tokyo2020 a particularly attractive target.

In the month of July, we are celebrating Evidence Locker's third birthday and our 150th episode. With this in mind, we decided on a Blockbuster theme. This week we look into the true crime case behind Steven Spielberg's film, Munich. Palestinian militant group Black September took nine 11 members of the Israeli Olympic team hostage during the Summer Olympics of 1972. The world watched as events unfolded, and it ended in the death of all the hostages and a German police officer, as well as five of the eight terrorists. To avenge their murders, Operation Wrath of God was born, a covert mission to take out everyone who had played a part in the Munich Massacre. The first full account, based on access to key players who have never before spoken, of the Munich Massacre and the Israeli response–a lethal, top secret, thirty-year-long antiterrorism campaign to track down the killers. 1972. The Munich Olympics. Palestinian members of the Black September group murder eleven Israeli athletes. Nine hundred million people watch the crisis unfold on television, witnessing a tragedy that inaugurates the modern age of terror and remains a scar on the collective conscience of the world. Back in Israel, Prime Minister Golda Meir vows to track down those responsible and, in Menachem Begin's words, “run these criminals and murderers off the face of the earth.” A secret Mossad unit, code named Caesarea, is mobilized, a list of targets drawn up. Thus begins the Israeli response–a mission that unfolds not over months but over decades. The Mossad has never spoken about this operation. No one has known the real story. Until now. Award-winning journalist Aaron Klein's incisive and riveting account tells for the first time the full story of Munich and the Israeli counterterrorism operation it spawned. With unprecedented access to Mossad agents and an unparalleled knowledge of Israeli intelligence, Klein peels back the layers of myth and misinformation that have permeated previous books, films, and magazine articles about the “shadow war” against Black September and other terrorist groups. Spycraft, secret diplomacy, and fierce detective work abound in a story with more drama than any fictional thriller. Burning questions are at last answered, including who was killed and who was not, how it was done, which targets were hit and which were missed. Truths are revealed: the degree to which the Mossad targeted nonaffiliated Black September terrorists for assassination, the length and full scope of the operation (far greater than previously suspected), retributive acts against Israel, and much more. Finally, Klein shows that the Israeli response to Munich was not simply about revenge, as is popularly believed. By illuminating the tactical and strategic purposes of the Israeli operation, Striking Back allows us to draw profoundly relevant lessons from one of the most important counterterrorism campaigns in history.
The whole world watched in horror as the murder of eleven Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games raised the bar on international terror to previously inconceivable heights. The events cannot be forgotten, and their consequences are with us down to this day.

This week's episode takes us back to 1972 and to the German city of Munich. 1972 was set to be a momentous year for Germany - as hosts to the Olympic Games, the country was looking forward to repairing its reputation on the world stage following its conduct in World War II, just 27 years earlier. Whilst this would have been the perfect opportunity to cement itself as a country that celebrated peace and joy, it wasn't to be for Germany that year... A terror cell hellbent on retribution put paid to that... In the heart of the Olympic Village, nine Israeli Olympians were taken hostage. What followed is the stuff of nightmares. Oh boy, this is the first part of a long, multi-part doozy. We're gonna be talking about the Mossad and Operation Wrath of God for the next couple weeks. But before we can talk about trained assassins exacting their revenge, I gotta tell you why they're so pissed off: the Munich Massacre. During the 1972 Munich olympics, terrorists entered the olympic village and took the Israeli olympic team as hostages. The German police are ill-prepared for the terrorist situation. This is the story of how they completely failed as a police force while it was all being broadcasted on television. Much like the olympics, the German police absolutely suck. With its daring operations and continuous mystique, the Israeli Mossad intelligence agency has quite a history. With the founding of the Mossad, it was tasked with securing Israeli intelligence beyond Israel's borders. Nazi hunting and spying in nearby Arab countries were just some of the Mossad operations in the early years. When Yossele Shuchmacher was kidnapped by his grandfather and smuggled out of the country, the affair became a divisive factor within the secular and religious in Israeli society. The Mossad was put on the case, finally locating him in Brooklyn after an exhaustive search. Following the terrible tragedy at the 1972 Olympics, with the murder of 11 Israeli athletes in the infamous Munich Massacre, the Mossad was tasked with revenge. Operation Wrath of G-d was to destroy the Black September terrorist organization which was the perpetrator of the attacks. This was largely successful and most of the principle operatives and terrorists were eliminated. Motel Hell returns with Dick Fetti at the helm to delve into the Munich Massacre, the 1972 attack on the Summer Olympic Games by the terrorist group Black September. Dick Fetti reaches deep into his boozy college years to reclaim on old research paper on the subject and regale Flex Lexa, Ben the Beardo and you, the listener, with this tragic and sometimes grimly humorous tale of when terrorism, a twenty-four hour news cycle, and an inept government collide. To start things off, the Magnificent Three™ review the phenomenal “Sicario” by Denis Villeneuve (who recently directed “Blade Runner 2049”). Dick Fetti opens up the Disco Box again and the Beardo sings his praises for a classic Capcom series. Disco Box recommendations: Surface – Falling In Love 12” – Salsoul Records 1983 V/A - 12” Gold Master Series 2xLP – Salsoul Records 1994 Shifted – Six Steps To Resurgence 12” – Avian 2016 Shifted – Arrangements In Monochrome [Part One] 12” - Avian 2014 Shifted – Arrangements In Monochrome [Part Two] 12” - Avian 2014
Based on the true story of the Black September aftermath, Munich (2005) tells the story of five men who were chosen to eliminate the masterminds responsible for that fateful day. Spielberg shot this film on a very fast schedule, and turned it out fast enough to qualify for that year's award season — but the question is, did he make a good movie? We also discuss more Halt & Catch Fire and Bojack Horseman, as well as our excitement over future releases like Star Wars: The Last Jedi and I, Tonya.
While covering the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, CBS News reporter Dave Maresh found himself covering a terror attack, too.
Inside the Munich Massacre and one of the worst terrorist attacks in Olympic history.
