Edition No147 | 26-05-2025 - Trump may be inferring that Putin has lost his mind and is behaving out of character with mindless violence. But Trump has already clearly abandoned the peace process and is well on the way to washing his hands of the war, the peace and Ukraine. By the way, Putin is not mad, and the current violence is totally characteristic of his regime. But Trump clearly is not partial to history, facts or evidence. We are in the realm of the goldfish memory, where history is what happened mere hours ago, or anything further back was a long time ago, and probably never happened anyway, to quote the title of David Satter's excellent book on Russia. Let's recap, for those suffering from the Trump goldfish memory syndrome: - Trump never once pressured Putin to stop the war against Ukraine. He never even raised the topic of a ceasefire in his recent conversations with him.- After his call with Putin Trump essentially abandoned his own promise to stop the war.- The two-hour conversation on May 19 was so warm, apparently that neither Trump nor Putin wanted to hang up first. Queue memes of Budanov cutting off the line.- European allies and the Ukrainian leadership felt that they had simply been left to hang out to dry, without explanation, without a strategic position – just silence.- The United States is no longer trying to be a mediator. All diplomatic initiatives have been put on hold.- Trump is now simply washing his hands of the matter and stepping aside.- After the conversation with Putin, Trump publicly told reporters that he had not even mentioned the missile strikes on civilians in Ukraine. These have of course intensified dramatically following the call, possibly because of Trump's appeasement. Ukraine accepted Trump's proposal for a comprehensive and unconditional ceasefire. Putin did not and has never given any indication of softening his demands that would allow a nascent peace process or negotiation to even begin. There are not even grounds for a ceasefire arrangement, as Putin's demand escalated with each round of exploratory talks.----------LINK:https://kyivindependent.com/trump-doesnt-know-how-to-deal-with-gangsters-us-lets-ukraine-down-once-again/https://kyivindependent.com/ukraine-war-latest-80/----------Your support is massively appreciated!SILICON CURTAIN LIVE EVENTS - FUNDRAISER CAMPAIGNEvents in 2025 - Advocacy for a Ukrainian victory with Silicon CurtainNEXT EVENTS - LVIV, KYIV AND ODESA THIS MAY AND JUNE.https://buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtain/extrasOur first live events this year in Lviv and Kyiv were a huge success. DAVID SATTER, Author, The Less You Know, The Better You Sleep What is Putin saying about the recent terrorist attack in Russia? Are Russian authorities trying to track down these terrorists? Is Putin losing credibility in Russia? Comparing the military makeup of Ukraine and Russia How the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan impacted Russia's decision to invade Ukraine
DAVID SATTER, Author, The Less You Know, The Better You Sleep Underlying problems of the Soviet Union and communism What was the main priority for a post-Soviet Russia? How did Vladimir Putin rise to power? Has Putin committed acts of terror against the Russian people? Why does the Russian regime go to war? How did the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan impact its relationship with Russia? How has the war with Ukraine impacted Russian leadership?
In February 2024, Alexei Navalny a Russian politician died in an Arctic Russian penal colony. At just 47 years old his death would have been surprising were it not for the fact the Russian secret service FSB seemingly at the direction of Vladimir Putin had already tried and failed to kill him using a chemical weapon four years earlier. In this episode, I speak with Russian political expert David Satter. Formerly a Moscow correspondent for the Financial Times, and Soviet special correspondent for the Wall Street Journal. He was banned and expelled from Russian in 2013 after uncovering evidence of corruption and FSB links with apparent Chechnyan terrorist atrocities. We discuss the death of Navalny, the Wagner group's failed coup under Prighozin, the war in Ukraine, and the threat of nuclear war. From poisoning those who oppose him to encouraging what our guest calls a “cult of death”, Vladimir Putin leads the country with the largest nuclear arsenal in the world—Russia. The controversial Russian president finds himself in the center of three storylines during this news cycle: 1. This week marks two years since Russia invaded Ukraine under Putin's direction, and ten years since Russia annexed Crimea (an area in southern Ukraine). 2. Last week, we learned of the murder Alexey Navalny, a high-profile opposition leader imprisoned under Putin's regime. 3. Earlier this month, American host, Tucker Carlson, aired a high-publicized interview with President Putin, igniting headlines worldwide. Joining us is journalist and author, David Satter, who worked as a correspondent inside Russia during the fall of the Soviet Union and rise of Putin. In 2013, David became the first U.S. correspondent expelled from Russia since the Cold War. With incredible perspective on Russian life, and invaluable sources, David explains what most Americans don't understand about the Russian leader and the Russian way of life, adding context and insight about this news cycle. This interview covers a lot of ground! Some key names/words: Yevgeny Prigozhin: The former leader of the Wagner Group – a mercenary military force connected to the Russian government. Despite a strong relationship with President Putin in the past, Prigozhin became critical of the war in Ukraine and eventually led a revolt against Putin in 2023 that Putin deterred. Prigozhin died several months later, in a plane accident often suspected as a murder orchestrated by Putin. Alexey Navalny: A high-profile opposition leader against Pres. Vladmir Putin, who not only pursued political office in Russia but published investigative work exposing what he believed to be the corruption of the Putin regime. Malaysian Airlines Flight 17: A civilian flight traveling from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, July 17, 2014, carrying 283 people and 15 crew. The Boeing 777 flew over eastern Ukraine – an area of conflict between Russia and Ukraine – and a rocket shot it down, killing all 298 people on board. Later reports blamed Russia and Vladimir Putin. Evan Gershkovich: An American journalist imprisoned in Russia. Gershkovich lived in Russia and reported for The Wall Street Journal. During a reporting trip on March 29th, Russian security forces arrested him; Pres. Putin said Gershkovich acquired classified information. MORE ON SMARTHERNEWS.COM

The new series of Fascinating People, Fascinating Places launches on 5 January 2024 with new episodes featuring the man who caught Saddam Hussein, the lawyer for the 9/11 mastermind, and much more. But in the interim, I am replaying five episodes that were selected by listeners as the best content over the last few years. If you're new to the show now is the time to catch up. If you're a long-term listener here is a chance to revisit some of the fan favorites. Shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, I had the pleasure of speaking with WSJ veteran David Satter. He was expelled from Moscow due to his investigative work that indicated Vladimir Putin came to power on the back of terrorist atrocities committed by the FSB but blamed on Chechens. In this episode, he shares a compelling story that supports his claims. On 13 September 1999 Gennadiy Seleznyov speaker of the Duma announced to the Russian parliament that a terrorist attack had hit the remote and hitherto unremarkable city of Volgodonsk. The bombing did occur but not until 3 days later. But it was this incident in conjunction with other bombings that set in motion a series of events that salvaged the reputation of President Boris Yeltsin and laid the stage for his protege Vladimir Putin to come to power. But Selezynyovs apparent clairvoyance wasn't the only indication that something more sinister was afoot. And many people believe the second Chechen war was launched on the basis of a false flag attack concocted by Vladimir Putin. In this episode, I talk to the acclaimed journalist David Satter – formerly the Moscow correspondent for The Financial Times, and special correspondent for The Wall Street Journal. He was the first investigative reporter to detail what he believes was a bloody conspiracy to bring Putin to power. Aside from his journalistic work, David Satter has written five books about Russia including Age of Delirium: The Decline and Fall of the Soviet Union which was adapted into a documentary film, and more recently he authored The Less You Know, The Better You Sleep: Russia's Road to Terror and Dictatorship under Yeltsin and Putin. In December 2013, he was expelled from Russia having been accused of violating migration laws. A claim that he denies and has been widely derided. Episode 28 of The Reed Morin Show is a podcast interview with David Satter, the man who exposed Vladimir Putin for his role in the 1999 Russian Apartment bombing. These bombings solidified Putin as the defacto leader of Russia, at a time where his ascension to power was quickly falling apart. David Satter, a journalist, author, historian, and foreign policy expert –– who is widely regarded as one of the world's preeminent experts on Vladimir Putin / Russia. In December 2013, after years of exclusive reporting on Putin's crimes against humanity, David became the first Western Journalist ever banned from Russia (by their government) in the post-Cold War era. From 1976 until his banishment in 2013, David spent the majority of his time living in the Soviet Union (which later became Russia) while working as the Moscow Correspondent for the Financial Times and the Wall Street Journal. He is perhaps best known as the first researcher who claimed that Vladimir Putin and Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) were behind the 1999 Russian Apartment Bombings, the 2002 Nord-Ost Siege, and the 2004 Beslan School Attack. Over the past 2 decades, David has authored 5 books on Russia / The Soviet Union. Furthermore, he is also a Senior Fellow at both the Foreign Policy Research Institute & The Hudson Institute –– as well as a Visiting Scholar at Johns Hopkins. **Timestamps** 0:00 - Introduction: Unraveling Putin's Rise and Russia's Political Shifts 1:30 - The Near-Miss Tragedy and Putin's Ascent to Power 3:45 - Early Years of Vladimir Putin: The Making of a Leader 5:10 - Analyzing the Collapse of the Soviet Union 7:20 - Yeltsin's Presidency: Corruption and Crony Capitalism 9:35 - Vladimir Putin's Strategic Rise to Power 11:50 - The 1999 Apartment Bombings and Political Impact 14:15 - FSB's Role and Public Reaction in Russia 16:40 - Global Response to Russian Political Events 18:55 - Media Silence and Political Cover-Ups in Russia 21:10 - Putin's Election and the Strategy Behind It 23:30 - Corruption, Power, and Overlooked Russian History 25:45 - Deciphering Russia's Current Political State 26:00 - The Devastating Impact of Economic Collapse in Russia 28:15 - The High Death Rate and Social Despair in 1990s Russia 30:30 - The Tragic Consequences of Neglected Public Services 32:45 - Yeltsin's Failing Policies and Public Discontent 35:00 - The Dangerous State of Public Morale in Russia 37:15 - Putin's Opportunistic Rise Amidst National Crisis 39:30 - Analyzing the Shift in Global Political Dynamics 41:45 - Putin's Strategy in the Middle East and Its Implications 44:00 - Future of Russia-West Relations Post-War 46:15 - The Militarization of Russia and NATO's Response 48:30 - The Impact of Ukraine's Alignment with the West 50:45 - Changing Russian Ideology and the Role of the West 53:00 - The US and Russia: Learning from Soviet History 55:15 - Encouraging Critical Thinking in the Face of Mass Psychology 57:30 - Conclusion: Reflecting on Russia's Political Journey and Future Prospects
Today I'm speaking to David Satter, journalist, and historian with unique insights into how the deformation and repression of the past, is having terrible consequences for present day Russia. David has written extensively about Russia and the Soviet Union, especially the decline and fall of the USSR and rise of post-Soviet Russia. David Satter became the first American journalist to be expelled from Russia since the Cold War in December 2013. Pick the worst periods of Russian history and you will find echoes of them in the present day – whether that be the economic and mafia chaos of the 90s, the privations and repression of the Soviet period. And several stories from the last few weeks exemplify this devolution of Russia into the worst versions of itself from the past. The arrest of an American journalist. The defection of a former Kremlin security officer, and a spectacular assassination of a political extremist in St Petersburg. ---------- SPEAKER: Today I'm speaking to David Satter, journalist, and historian with unique insights into how the deformation and repression of the past, is having terrible consequences for present day Russia. WARNING - poor quality video quality - but audio and insights are great. Ukraine and Russia have arguably been very different for centuries, but in modern times the greatest split came when Ukraine gained its independence on 24 August 1991. Since then that independence has bene reinformed by a wave of revolutions that have gradually transformed Ukraine into a pluralistic, young democracy, with a vibrant civil society. But also, their approach to historical memory has been radically different, and the willingness to face up to the traumas of the past, or to bury them and deny them for expediency and to consolidate power in the present. There was a time when those calling Russia a mafia state, and Putin a terrorist, were in the minority, and who were even thought of as extreme voices. My guest today was one of those people, who along with a handful of other writers and journalists like Edward Lucas and David Satter called Putin out early on, while his oppressive regime was just starting to flex its muscles. Luke Harding has observed Russia's decent into tyrannical absolutism and terrorism over many years, and charted the malign influence or that country abroad, as exercised in wars, energy politics and Active Measures. Luke Harding is a foreign correspondent for The Guardian. He was based in Russia for The Guardian from 2007 until, returning from a stay in the UK on 5 February 2011, he was refused re-entry to Russia and deported the same day. His expulsion was likely linked with his articles critical to Russia. His 2011 book Mafia State discusses his experience in Russia and the political system under Vladimir Putin, which he describes as a mafia state.

Russia's war against Ukraine has escalated significantly this year, but did not start in February, or even in 2014. Its roots are far deeper, and more malign than just territorial ambitions. Today I am exploring how Russia got to this point, and where is goes next, with the person perhaps best equipped to answer this question, and a long-standing critic of The Kremlin – David Satter. Russia's attempts to control, coerce and dominate Ukraine have deep roots in its Soviet and imperialist past, and are very much a by-product of the weaknesses and internal dynamics its aging, totalitarian regime. David Satter is a journalist and historian who has written extensively about Russia and the Soviet Union, especially the decline and fall of the USSR and rise of post-Soviet Russia. To celebrate the 150th episode of Departures, we held a live recording with a terrific group of invited guests in London. We're grateful to John Lough, a former NATO officer, a Senior Vice President at the consultancy Highgate, and the author of the book, "Germany's Russia Problem," who provided introductory remarks. Our longtime friend and colleague David Satter provided a presentation of his most recent book, "Never Speak to Strangers and Other Writing from Russia and the Soviet Union," and responded to questions from the audience. And we were also fortunate to enjoy a special appearance by Ilya Ponomarev, a Kyiv-based entrepreneur and political advisor, who was able to offer unparalled insights into the conflict and give his take on how Putin is going to respond to the increasing pressures all around him. The quality of the recording is unfortunately not the best we have had, but we are grateful for the strong showing of listeners who came out for the breakfast forum as well as grateful for all of regular audience listening from afar.

Does history really repeat itself and can we learn from it? David Satter (davidsatter.com), Editorial Author at the Wall Street Journal, joins us to report on his experiences as a journalist in 1970s and '80s Soviet Russia and how it compares to America today. In both eras, media engaged in pushing an ideology instead of reporting the facts. In totalitarian societies, media and others in power threaten to disrupt your future, through cancel culture or other means, forcing people to self-censor. It happened in the Soviet Union. It's beginning to happen here. Tuesday saw Georgia fall to the democrats and Wednesday saw chaos in our nation's capital. Is there hope for America's future? John, Carol, and Steve sit down for a studio roundtable to look at where we've been and where we could be headed. Just like in the 1770s, the people today are not being represented by their government officials. Is there anything we can do? Will it take a revolution or can we solve things peacefully? It's tough to see but there is hope for the future. How do globalists go about furthering their agenda? They have a long rolling plan that's easy to spot if you know what to look for. John finishes out the show this week looking at the EU's plan to erode national sovereignty, doing it slowly until their objective is met. And he explains how change agents work and what to look for when they come to your town. Whether it be the EU or Marxists working in this country, gradual pressure is put on us until the pain of leaving their oppressive regime is greater than the pain of caving to their agenda.
