On this episode, the boys are joined by former Vancouver Canucks 10th overall pick Cody Hodgson. Cody won World Junior Championship gold with Team Canada while leading his junior team in scoring, and was touted as a top prospect coming into Vancouver. A few years in, Hodgson and Canucks management had a less than ideal relationship leading to his eventual trade to Buffalo. He had 2 great seasons as a top piece with the Sabres, scoring 78 points 120 games before oddly falling off the map with a 13 point season. After many scary incidents and side effects that he discusses with us, he discovered he had malignant hyperthermia (MH), a degenerative condition which produces rigidity in muscles, along with coronary stress. He would end his career with Nashville, but after tearing 5 muscles in one year, the NHL was no longer a possibility. Despite a tough break, Cody isn't easily defeated. We get into the relationship issues with Vancouver management over his injuries, playing with Steven Stamkos, John Tavares, and Alex Pietrangelo as a kid and more. Before the interview, the boys predict where the Edmonton Oilers will end up in the playoffs, the best NHL coaches, and much more. We're on the homestretch of the NHL season! Wait til you hear about our NFL ring ceremony concept...Jonah is back in from his Fresh year of college and contributes in a big way. Maria can best be described as mildly bemused and tolerant as the guys propose the following:1) What would you do if you had the Stanley Cup for a day?2) A total reimagining of the NFL Super Bowl ring ceremony. What if NFL Super Bowl rings were turned over every year like the Stanley Cup? 50 yard line, previous winners line up across from new winners and (Benny Hill theme starts playing) each player has to find another one to wear his ring.Would there be Red Carpet event fan overlap for the Super Bowl if there was a week long leadup with players discussing the rings, their potential outfits for the ceremony and who their potential targets might be?If this sounds to you like it might be a terrible idea, maybe you need to ask yourself this question: “If Elvis Grbac, 1994 Michigan Wolverines starting QB, thinks its a great idea...is it possible that maybe I’m the one missing the point?”*If you are an NFL athlete or know an NFL athlete, please explain to us why or how you think this will be successful and who to contact to make it work.*To date, Elvis Grbac is definitely unaware of this idea and may or may not think it’s a good idea. Please visit us at https://thetragedyacademy.com On social media, you can find us at @thetragedyacademypodcast on Instagram, The Tragedy Academy Podcast on Facebook, and @tragedy_academy on Twitter. This week in anguish: - Read it and maintain emotional composure: 1st in the Pacific, 2nd in the Western Conference, 7th in the National Hockey League. - Quinn Hughes is on pace to challenge for the Canucks' single-season scoring record for defencemen. Tristan runs through the 15 names he will have to surmount to become the Canucks' all-time best d-man. It's not...daunting. - The Canucks Time Machine sees Pat Quinn indulging in his favourite pastime in 1991 (firing Bob McCammon), Felix Potvin wearing out his Vancouver welcome in 2001, and everything is looking up during Cody Hodgson's first game in 2011. - How Did We Not Know about the famous coach of the Vancouver White Spots? This week in anguish: - Move over, "Little Things" Loui, and make way once again for Elias "Fantastic Things" Pettersson. - Tristan goes full hockey man on John Tortorella, and reminds him that, at least in terms of the NHL, he never even "played the game". - Everyone's least favourite segment: Concussion Watch 2018. We chat about Elias' perfect protocol, and note that Sven didn't get any pushback either. - We distract ourselves from the traditional late-October reality check by letting Brock remind us how much we love him, before we get down to the real issue: What the heck is a "huncho"? - Is Tryamkin in just the right sweet-and-sour spot for a return to Vancouver? How's the Honey Badger doing? Wait, Nigel Dawes is Kazakh? We have KHL questions, clearly. - We re-evaluate our stance on Cody Hodgson, and finally chuck a few coins at a spinning wheel in How Did I Not Know That? Thanks for listening! If you liked the show, tell a friend. You can find us on Twitter as @thisweektristan and @thisweekardella.

The dog days of the preseason are here and tickets to those preseason games are cheap cheap cheap! There's also a new mascot in Edmonton but the PON gang has a couple suggestions after Hunter the Lynx is unveiled to less than stellar reviews. Another full bench on the podcast this week. Dave, Geeta, P Mac and Ryan gather in Geeta's palatial estate to talk all about the anticlimactic final of the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. Did we ever doubt Canada would win it? No. Was it exciting? Not really. Can they improve it for the alleged 2020 World Cup Of Hockey? They most certainly think so! They take a look at the Canucks' preseason. Demko and Subban have both been sent down to Utica, and Troy Stecher is the clear cut front runner for the Fedor Fedorov Memorial Trophy as the Canucks preseason MVP. Can he make the opening night roster? Or will he be a midseason call up? Also on the Canucks front, the gang remembers Cody Hodgson and his controversial time with the Canucks. From meddling dads to poorly handled back injuries, his career is cut short as he retires at 26 to work with the Nashville Predators. Finally, Ryan plays a game of real or fake North American Major Junior or Professional hockey teams with Geeta, Dave and Paul. Play along at home! Enjoy!
