In this episode of The Compassionate Capitalist Podcast™, host Karen Rands interviews Devin Thorpe, founder of The Super Crowd, a public benefit corporation focused on impact crowdfunding to help diverse founders and social entrepreneurs raise capital. Devin, a champion of social good and a bestselling author, discusses the evolution of crowdfunding and its alignment with his core values and mission to create social impact. As a benefit corporation, he prioritizes social impact over profits and believes crowdfunding provides an avenue to democratize the capital markets and empower underserved founders. The conversation delves into successful social impact of projects funded through crowdfunding and highlights the importance of building a community around these initiatives. Three takeaways: 1. The Power of Benefit Corporations: Devin Thorpe's choice to lead a benefit corporation demonstrates a commitment to both financial success and positive social impact. Benefit corporations aim to prioritize social and environmental goals, which aligns with Devin's mission to create wealth while driving meaningful change in communities. 2. Crowdfunding for Social Impact: Crowdfunding has evolved into a powerful tool for generating social impact. Through democratizing the capital markets, it allows "main street" investors to invest in projects that align with their values, and it provides opportunities for historically excluded groups, such as women and impact founders, to access funding and create profitable ventures. 3. Building and Shared Purpose: Devin emphasizes the significance of building a community around social impact initiatives. Engaging crowdfunding backers beyond financial contributions nurtures a sense of shared purpose and strengthens the impact of these projects. Creating a community ensures long-term support and amplifies the positive effects of the funded initiatives. Overall, this episode sheds light on the transformation of crowdfunding from a financial tool to a vehicle for creating social impact, while also exploring the role of benefit corporations in driving purpose-driven entrepreneurship. In this segment of the Compassionate Capitalist Podcast, Karen Rands responds to an entrepreneur's question: What is an Angel Investor? Since 2012, the definition and the game to attract angel investors has changed. Once considered only an activity available for an exclusive group of entrepreneurs turned investors, the access to capital and those who can invest in an entrepreneur's success to share that wealth all changed with the passage of the JOBS Act to stimulate the economy. Angel Investing is the 2nd best source for creating generational wealth, but less than 5% of the US public knows about it.Karen explains the history and evolution of angel investing and the good news: the wall between entrepreneurs and would-be investors has been removed, creating opportunity for financial success through entrepreneurism for the founders and the investors. Listen and learn the 4 ways entrepreneurs can solicit for investors from the general public of potential investors outside of the structured angel network funnel--- and the four easy ways ANYONE with disposable income and liquidity in their investment strategy can invest in entrepreneurs from startup to growth stage, in their community or thousands of miles away. This episode of the Compassionate Capitalist Show Podcast will explore the history of black enterprise, racial policies intended to aid in economic prosperity and racist practices that created barriers and obstacles to African American prosperity.True equality comes with economic prosperity. The Compassionate Capitalist Podcast will explore the history of black enterprise, and government policies intended to aid in economic prosperity, and the racist practices that created barriers and obstacles to African American prosperity so that wealth and education gap which exists today has its roots dating back to the late 1800. History shows time and time again how naive, well intentioned white people, in the spirit of compromise, released authority and control to other white people that had a sole intent to harm and hinder black people from achieving equality - socially and economically. There are many examples of progress being made and initiatives seeking to grow black entrepreneurship, wealth creation, and reinvestment into the communities that have been neglected and abandoned. As we look forward with these new sources of funding and entrepreneur development, we must also look back to see how to fix the fissure that over a 100 years of systemic racism has caused in our communities. If you are opposed to giving hand outs, then give a hand up. Work to get the loopholes that enable racists to harm and prevent the success and empowerment of people of color out of our financial, judicial, and legislative systems.Visit the full blog post to get all the links: Podcast & Blog Part 1: http://bit.ly/CCR-BLM1Podcast & Blog Part 2 with Links for Black Founder's access to Capital at: http://bit.ly/CCR-BLM2Karen Rands offers coaching programs for entrepreneurs seeking to prepare to raise capital and strategies to obtain capital and connect with investors. In this Compassionate Capitalist Podcast, Karen Rands is joined by Jonathon Bragdon, Founder of Capacity, to discuss Revenue Based Investments as a non-dilutive capital source gaining in popularity with entrepreneur founders and investors. Revenue Based Investments, also known as Royalty Financing, is a hybrid of debt and equity in that it can be converted to equity, unlike cash flow lending, yet is paid back as a percentage of revenue on a predictive basis until an agreed to multiple of the original amount is returned to the investor. When the agreed to amount, usually 2x - 4x the investment, is paid back to the investor, the entrepreneur's obligation is fulfilled and the company retains any equity used as collateral on the financing. The unique characteristics of Revenue Based Investments is well suited for businesses seeking growth capital to expand and have a long term vision for the future of their company to remain private. Investors accustomed to re-occuring revenue streams from their investments, can choose this type of investment in entrepreneur endeavors without the risk of waiting for the company to be acquired or go public in order to get their return on investment. Before founding Capacity as a fund for entrepreneur invesment and Capacity Partners to provide services to help companies increase revenue and capacity to scale, Jonathon Bragdon was a serial entrepreneur with numerous successful exits. Most notable was Tricycle, acquired by Shaw Industries, which was also how Karen and Jonathon met as he sought capital through the Launch Funding Network and NBA&I. Karen Rands explains Revenue Based Investing as a wealth creation strategy in her best selling book Inside Secrets to Angel Investing Youtube https://youtu.be/S6NAj7FdE4w

The life cycle and milestones used to measure progress and assess risk of Life Sciences companies as an early stage, pre-revenue company, is different than that of a tech or consumer product company. Often there isn't a MVP, Minimum Viable Product, or a prototype, or a beta version to validate that the innovation works. Customer validation usually doesn't come until much later in the lifecycle so it is assumed based on the medical break through intended to solve and address the suffering of an identified market. Investors committed to bringing bio and medical innovations to the market are the minority in the broad scope of angel investors and angel investor groups. In this episode of the Compassionate Capitalist Podcast, Karen Rands is joined by Yaniv Sneor, co-founder of the Mid Atlantic Bio Angels (MABA), a life science angel investor group (bioangels.net), where he administers MABA’s internal investment pools, and their co-investment Sidecar Fund (https://sidecarfund.bioangels.net/), for non MABA member investors, to discuss how and why the group formed and their unique approach investing in life sciences companies. Educated as a physicist, Mr. Sneor made the transition into the business world about 30 years ago, at which point he took the helm of his first company. Mr. Sneor has held every C-level position and led his companies through merger, acquisition, capitalization, and turnaround leadership with companies ranging from start-up to growth stage. Mr. Sneor is also currently the CEO of Native State Therapeutics, an early state biotechnology company in the neurodegeneration field. True equality comes with economic prosperity. Work to get the loopholes that enable racists to harm and prevent the success and empowerment of people of color out of our financial, judicial, and legislative systems. IPOs get the big press. Mergers & Acquisitions are usually private transactions. Startup Founders and their investors plan for an 'exit' that sometimes may be an Initial Public Offering - IPO - but usually the most likely exit happens much sooner than an IPO, when the company gets acquired by a fund or another bigger company. Listen to this episode of the Compassionate Capitalist Podcast show to host Karen Rands, and guest Ted Bender, discuss the differences in types of acquisitions: horizontal, vertical, consolidation, strategic, market expansion, roll-up and how they might pursued as an exit strategy. Most acquisitions are calculated as a multiple on EBITDA. For startups and early stage companies, sometimes there is a intangible factor such as the strategic value of tech or customer set that isn't measured by profit. And then there is 'timing'... when do you sell and does there come a time of diminishing return? Ted Bender is an expert in the M&A space, founding Croft & Bender, a highly regarded Investment Bank, with 3 private equity funds that invested in more than forty companies across various industries and growth stages. Currently Ted owns & operates TJ Bender & Company, which provides M&A, capital raising, and strategic advisory services to businesses, family offices, and private equity firms. Karen Rands advises Founders & CEOs on growth strategies and access to capital through her Launch Funding Network. She works with private investors and family offices on due-diligence and company operational reviews. She is the best selling author of financial primer for angel investors: Inside Secret to Angel Investing.

Hall Martin, storied angel investor from Texas, returns to the Compassionate Capitalist Podcast show with host Karen Rands to talk about his novel approach to negotiating a guarranteed ROI when investing in private companies. Both entrepreneurs and investors often focus their attention on the potential ROI of an investment based on an acquisition exit in 5 years. More times than not, that type of exit doesn't materialize because the company doesn't maintain the rate of growth originially forecasted to achieve the 4X in 5 years. As time goes on, the IRR - the Internal Rate of Return, lowers compared to a straight ROI multiple calculation. Under Hall's 3X in 3Years model, investors and entrepreneurs establish a contracted guarranteed return for the investor if the entrepreneur doesn't hit their milestones, misses their next round of venture finance and therefore fails to scale as originally proposed. This method benefits the entrepreneur to add incentive to their first money in investors, and benefits the investors because they know they have the option to get a return in 3 years that can be put back to work in the community. Karen and Hall cover many additional topics too. This podcast was also created as a video and is available here: Youtube Hall Martin is the founder and CEO of TEN Capital Network. His involvement in building and leading angel investor groups spans decades, beginning with the Central Texas Angel Network through to his current involvement with the Baylor Angel Network. His work with entrepreneurs also spans decades and many organizations. Learn more at http://TENCapital.group Karen Rands is the best selling author of Inside Secrets to Angel Investors. KarenRands.co

Due Diligence on a private investment is more than legal and financial review, and background checks. Good due diligence to evaluate long term viability of a potential private equity investment involves getting the opinions of experts on the industry, intellectual property, and market opportunity. This is a steep and expensive challenge for private solo investors. Even Angel Investor Networks, Private Equity Funds and Venture Capital Funds struggle with building broad cross-industry expertise. InquireOf has developed a solution for that. InquireOf was built to empower investors to find industry experts for their deals, fast. Unlike traditional expert acquisition methods, InquireOf's software equips investors to quickly vet deals with easy to use proprietary specialized search algorithms to find the expertise needed when it is needed. Karen's guest on the Compassionate Capitalist Podcast, Kyle Sale is the Founder & CEO of InquireOf. Kyle’s broad experience spans turning around technology companies for private equity investors to building globally distributed search products for Fortune 500 firms. Along his journey he realized how critical it was to the due diligence process to have experts to call upon and built InquireOf to sit at the intersection of the emotion of wanting to invest, and the discipline to evaluate the true potential of the investment. Karen Rands wrote the best selling primer for Angel Investors: Inside Secrets to Angel Investing. She emphasizes building a team to help evaluate a deal beyond the investor's own experience. She saw the value of InquireOf in her own efforts to provide due diligence services to her investor network.
