Robert shares his remarkable journey from being a successful property developer to becoming a passionate advocate for solving the housing crisis in Australia. Robert candidly explains how his eyes were opened to the growing issue of homelessness and the lack of affordable housing, despite his involvement in the property industry. This realization sparked his mission to engage the private sector as "compassionate capitalists" to tackle these critical social challenges. Throughout the conversation, Robert delves into the staggering scale of the housing crisis in Australia, highlighting alarming statistics that demonstrate the urgent need for action. He emphasizes that this is not just a government problem, but a community-wide issue that requires innovative solutions driven by cross-sector collaboration. Listeners will gain valuable insights into the complexities of the housing crisis, the barriers to progress, and the potential solutions that can be driven by the private sector working in tandem with government and not-for-profit organizations. “It's The Dark Matter Of Business” Join me and my guest Charlie Gilkey (charliegilkey.com), CEO of Productive Flourishing (productiveflourishing.com). Charlie has advised hundreds of teams, from Fortune 100 companies to tiny nonprofits and is the author of the critically acclaimed Start Finishing: How to Go From Idea to Done and his current book, Team Habits: How Small Actions Lead to Extraordinary Results. We explore the concept of Compassionate Capitalism and its implications for team dynamics and performance – especially the role of team habits in achieving extraordinary results. Summary In this conversation, Blaine Bartlett and Charlie Gilkey explore the concept of compassionate capitalism and its implications for team dynamics and performance. They discuss the importance of understanding the "soul of business" as a living organism, the role of team habits in achieving extraordinary results, and the significance of belonging and communication within teams. The dialogue emphasizes the need for explicit communication of goals and conditions of satisfaction, as well as the challenges of maintaining excellence in a comfortable environment. Ultimately, they highlight the distinction between groups and teams, advocating for a culture of interdependence and shared commitment to improvement. Takeaways Compassionate Capitalism emphasizes the interconnectedness of all business actions. Teams are a collection of relationships that require conscious effort to maintain. Team habits can either reinforce bad practices or promote positive change. Belonging within a team enhances performance and problem-solving capabilities. Conditions of satisfaction must be articulated to ensure team alignment. Making the obvious explicit helps avoid misunderstandings and misalignments. Cordial hypocrisy can hinder performance; teams must prioritize excellence over comfort. High-performing teams distinguish themselves through shared commitment and accountability. Interdependence is crucial for effective teamwork and achieving goals. Leadership should focus on the "why" rather than the "how" to empower teams Learn more about your ad choices. As one of the nation's premier ESOP consultants, Kelly has designed and executed numerous ESOPs and has shared his expertise at more than 300 conferences and meetings globally, including in London and Sydney. In 2010, Kelly authored "The ESOP Coach: Using ESOPs in Ownership Succession Planning," the most comprehensive guide on ESOPs available today. He has also published numerous articles on the subject, further establishing his authority in ownership succession planning.Kelly's firm, Executive Financial Services, established in 1981 and based in Memphis, Tennessee, is dedicated exclusively to ESOPs. With a highly qualified team, they have successfully executed transactions in 38 cities across 19 states, focusing solely on ESOPs.SHOW SUMMARY In this episode of the Disruptive Successor podcast, host Jonathan Goldhill is joined by Kelly Finnell, a leading ESOP consultant, to discuss the intricacies and benefits of Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs) as an effective business succession strategy. Kelly provides insights into how ESOPs function, their tax benefits, the impact on company culture, and the feasibility for various business types. He also addresses common myths and concerns related to ESOPs, offering real-world examples and case studies. This episode aims to provide next-generation leaders and entrepreneurs with valuable information on leveraging ESOPs for successful business transitions while fostering employee ownership.KEY TAKEAWAYSIntroduction to ESOPs: An Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) is a form of retirement plan that invests primarily in the stock of the sponsoring employer, providing both an exit strategy for business owners and benefits to employees.Target Companies: ESOPs are ideal for small to mid-sized companies with stable and predictable revenues, typically with at least $2 million in EBITDA. They are particularly beneficial for professional services firms.Tax Benefits: Significant tax advantages exist for both the selling owner (potential deferral or elimination of capital gains taxes) and the company (operating tax-free if it's an S corporation).Financing ESOPs: The ESOP is fully financed by the company, not by the employees, making it possible for employees to become owners without needing to invest their own money.Ownership Culture: ESOPs promote an ownership culture within the company, aligning employees' interests with the company's success, which can lead to increased productivity and motivation.Succession Planning: ESOPs can be used effectively in family businesses to manage generational transitions, ensuring fair distribution of the estate among family members.Feasibility and Implementation: The process begins with a feasibility study to evaluate the potential outcomes and involves significant communication and education efforts to ensure employee buy-in and understanding.QUOTES"ESOP solves that problem: it is entirely financed by the company. The employees don't come out of pocket with any money. It's a benefit plan for them, not an investment plan.""I always tell business owners that the best candidate for an ESOP is a company where the owner comes in late, takes a long lunch, and leaves early.""You have to have a strong successor management team.""The reason the ESOP outperforms is because with an ESOP, you're getting a leveraged rate of return on the employee's accounts.""If a business owner sells to private equity, the way the government would look at that is you have a rich person selling to other rich people."Connect and learn more about Kelly Finnell.LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/esopcoach/If you enjoyed today's episode, please subscribe, review, and share with a friend who would benefit from the message. On this episode of the Lead With Purpose podcast host, Tze Ching Yeung talks to Blaine Bartlett, a consultant who has impacted more than one million people globally about his role as a coach and motivator and how business can succeed by taking inspiration from nature. KEY TAKEAWAYS In nature, in my childhood, I marvel at the seasonality, the way life seems to fit together, nothing seems to go to waste, it's utilised in some way, shape or form. Even in times of drought things still grow. From that childhood experience I started considering what is the purpose of business, so I went to study economics which is the study of scarcity. The universe is not scarce, it's infinitely abundant, I wanted to study abundance and nature is abundant. I took the implication from that to how I run my businesses. There is no such thing that exists in real life as a free-market economy in the way that most people experience business. There's restraints, guardrails, prohibitions, nature is truly the only free-market economy: When it's left untouched it does what it's supposed to do, which is grow and distribute goods and services for the consumption of those aspects of nature that need it. Compassion is predicated and organised around connection, it's literally impossible for me to behave compassionately towards something or someone unless I feel emotionally connected to them. It informs the decisions that I make and my behaviours. This comes from being conscious that your business touches many more people than just your board and shareholders and that your decisions have ripple effects that affect more than just the bottom line. One of the catalysts for a move to utopia is to define in people's minds what the purpose of a business is. It's not to make money – that's important to stay in business – but the purpose of business is to enhance the likelihood of thriving for the people that come in contact with my service or product. BEST MOMENTS ‘I work with some of the largest organisations on the planet and look at how we can make them more hospitable to the human spirit.' ‘Leadership, business, enterprises all trace back to: How do we succeed? The answer to that question is: We pay attention to what nature can teach us.' ‘The container that we operate in constrains our behaviour. If we change the structure of the container it makes possible different behaviours which generate different outcomes.' ‘The problem with large enterprises is that there's so much inertia built into the system that it's really difficult to turn them. It is possible. It may be utopistic, but who doesn't want to live in a utopia?' ABOUT THE GUEST Blaine Bartlett is President and CEO of Avatar Resources, Inc., a consulting firm he founded in 1987. He is also Founder of the Institute for Compassionate Capitalism, a Managing Director of the Global Coaching Alliance, an Adjunct Professor at China's Beijing University, Dean of Education at the World Business Academy, and a member of the teaching faculty at the American Association for Physician Leadership. In this episode of the Compassionate Capitalist Show, Karen brings back a fan favorite from the vault to explain something she references often -- Hall Martin's strategy to It is a strategy he used to share the risk between angel investors and founders. This is where the term you hear Karen use: Payroll Exits - comes from. Their discussion will span from the foundational principles of "compassionate capitalism" to the meticulous art of informed angel investing. Hall will unravel the critical factors for successful angel investments and offer gems on how angel investors can generate evergreen funds through savvy reinvestments. Moreover, Hall will tackle the all-too-common scenario where startup founders start to seek to grow their compensation even as they miss their growth targets. Founders start to pay themselves more: payroll exits, while the investors internal rate of return declines the longer it takes the company to achieve a financial / sales level to sell the company for an equity exit. This 3x in 3 years is a practical approach to sharing that risk and fundamentally structured like a conversion note with a redemption right in the third year. Key Take Aways: ### Term Sheet and Investor Relations Encouragement for angel investors to create their own terms Qualifying startups based on their exit intentions Rights for investors to exit after three years ### Understanding Investment Outcomes Identifying winners, losers, and lifestyle businesses Impact of payroll exits on investment return Differences between ROI and IRR ### Risk Assessment, Valuations and Exit Strategies Understanding the risks and potential exit strategies before investing Defining risks and clarifying expectations with entrepreneurs Recognizing realistic valuations and exit possibilities Avoiding investments in overvalued companies without clear exit strategies So sharpen your pencils and get your spreadsheets ready as we explore how to mitigate risks, gauge entrepreneur commitment, and understand the nuances of venture viability. Thank you so much!Devin: What do you see as your superpower?Karen: My superpower is being able to dissect a business concept or an idea—or an entrepreneur and help them figure out a better way to get to market.Author Karen Rands leads the compassionate capitalism movement, which she describes as investors genuinely sharing the passions of the founders they back. Her goal is to dramatically grow the number of people investing as angels, including those investing via crowdfunding. She points out that fewer than 10 percent of accredited investors, those traditionally eligible to invest in private securities transactions, do so. A comparable number of people invest via crowdfunding, suggesting that even in its early days, crowdfunding is attracting a new audience of angel investors.Still, she notes, vast numbers of both ordinary and accredited investors don't realize they have an opportunity for impact and profit via private transactions that exceed those of the public markets.Karen deploys her superpower to help entrepreneurs raise more capital and help investors see red flags to avoid.AI Podcast Summary* Karen Rands is the founder of Kugarand Capital Holdings, focusing on compassionate capitalism and helping people become angel investors through crowdfunding.* She discovered angel investing after leaving IBM and realized the lack of awareness and understanding about it due to legal restrictions on soliciting capital.* Karen wrote a book called “Inside Secrets to Angel Investing” to educate and guide potential investors, particularly those in corporate America with high incomes.* Her goal is to make angel investing as popular as real estate or stock market investing, as it offers the opportunity for impact and fulfillment.* Karen's superpower is analyzing business concepts and helping entrepreneurs improve their strategies to achieve market success and funding.* She has seen success in mentoring entrepreneurs, helping them refine their business plans and secure funding.* Karen breaks down business concepts and identifies red flags to address, then helps entrepreneurs develop their investor avatar to attract the right investors.* Entrepreneurs should start by raising funds from friends and family, gaining confidence in their product and business before approaching external investors.* Karen offers coaching programs for entrepreneurs and investors, focusing on filling gaps, building confidence, and effectively raising capital.* To learn more about Karen and her work, visit her website KarenRands.co and access her free e-book “The 12 Secrets of Innovation and Wealth.”How to Develop the Ability to Dissect a Business Concept As a Superpower“My superpower is loving entrepreneurs and being able to clear the window so they can see the future that's going to work for them to fulfill their dream and build the company that they want to build,” Karen says.Karen has experience mentoring entrepreneurs in various business plan competitions and advising companies seeking capital. She has the ability to influence these entrepreneurs and encourage them to make necessary shifts, such as improving their language and articulation of their business. She has witnessed those entrepreneurs become successful in raising capital, scaling their businesses, and pivoting their approach to their marketplace and customers.Karen shares a metaphor she uses to help entrepreneurs see the importance of raising money from friends and family. As you contemplate the lesson she's making about friends and family, think about how she has dissected the funding process in a fresh way to help entrepreneurs be more successful. This is one of the little analogies that I use: If you knew, there's gold over there in that field, and you can get one other person, and you have to dig it up within an hour in order to get it. You can get one other person with a shovel, and the two of you can go and dig up that gold, and then it's yours.Well, are you going to go to a stranger on the street and say, “Come help me dig up this gold”? No, you're going to go to the person that you know and that you would want to share that success with.By following Karen's example, you can learn to better dissect a business concept to help you invest better, support entrepreneurs more compassionately and potentially make it a superpower that helps you do more good in the world.Guest-Provided ProfileKaren Rands: (she/her):Managing Director, Kugarand Capital Holdings, LLCAbout Kugarand Capital Holdings, LLC: Kugarand Capital Holdings offers capital strategy, coaching, and investor relations services for entrepreneurs raising capital using methods for direct public offering, commonly known as crowdfunding. Blaine Bartlett joins the show to discuss a sweeping array of topics on everything from self awareness, business ethics, and aspects of globalization and shifting market forces. Blaine is President and CEO of Avatar Resources Inc, a consulting firm he founded in 1987. He has served clients in Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, and the United States. While living in Japan in the early 1980's, he managed the business and international consulting division of one of the largest and most successful Human Resource Development and Consulting organizations in Asia. Blaine is also Founder of the Institute for Compassionate Capitalism, a Managing Director of the Global Coaching Alliance, an Adjunct Professor at China's Beijing University, Dean of Education at the World Business Academy, and a member of the teaching faculty at the American Association for Physician Leadership. In this hour, Blaine helps listeners make the important distinctions between market models and sociopolitical models while breaking down the principles of what he calls Compassionate Capitalism. Blaine illustrates why he believes that the single most important purpose of business is to enhance the likelihood of their employees to thrive. He shares why the practice of valuing the soul of your business, while never forsaking your core values and relationships, is a trait of so many successful ventures. In addition to discussing relationship building and leadership, Blaine and John reflect upon shared business experiences and why the tunnel vision of shareholder supremacy can be an achilles heel for leaders. Blaine is fond of saying “the primary focus of what I do is built upon a foundation that focuses on returning to or regaining the soul of your business – that esprit that gives what you do meaning and vitality and connects to everything your business touches.” This focus on your business's unique aspects along with the curation of relationships and focusing on internal relationships while avoiding the dangers of singular growth is an organizing principle in this conversation. Implementing this mindset shift from being a center of accumulation to a center of distribution lies at the core of Blaines' work and mission and John is excited to unpack that message in this episode. Topics Include: The Role of Consciousness in Decision Making Focusing On Integrity and Ethics In Business Breaking Down The Drastic Market Shifts in China Compassionate Capitalism Opposed to Crony Capitalism Implementing a “Do No Harm” Philosophy in Business The Importance of Sustaining the Soul of Your Business Starting Businesses Versus Running Businesses The Importance of Relationships In Business The Dangers of Shareholder Supremacy Curating Quality Relationships In Your Business Why Singular Focus on Growth Can Harm Your Business The Mindset of Distribution Rather Than Accumulation Connect With Blaine: Website: https://www.blainebartlett.com/ Books: https://www.blainebartlett.com/books/ Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/blainebartlett/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/blainebartlett Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/OfficialBlaineBartlett/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/blainebartlett/?hl=en The Institute for Compassionate Capitalism: https://www.compassionate-capitalism.org/ Avatar Resources: https://www.avatar-resources.com/ Follow John: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/johncerasani TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@johncerasani LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/johncerasani For More Info on John's Book: https://2000percentraise.com/ More 2000 Percent Raise Episodes and Content: https://linktr.ee/2000percentraise Produced by: https://socialchameleon.us

The Legalization of Equity Crowd Funding was the catalyst for the great Economic Democratization of the Capital Markets. Although crowdfunding started with reward based, the advent of the JOBS Act in 2012 introduced 4 ways to raise equity capital from the crowd. The expanded pool of additional investors are not your typical angel investors. These 4 methods remove the invisible wall between entrepreneurs and their potential investors. There is still great confusion on how to best use equity crowdfunding to raise capital, and even more so, how traditional retail stock investors can get involved in a low risk way and start investing in the entrepreneurs with 'unicorn potential' or the small business owners that are well established and are seeking an amount of growth capital that is not available from their bank and they don't fit a Venture Capitalist or Private Equity Fund criteria. They can be as solid of an investment as a retail stock, but with much greater upside potential. The 4 methods to solicit from the general public, to crowd fund, are not created equal. Each has it's unique benefits to entrepreneurs and investors. Watch and Listen as Karen explains the difference in the 4 equity Crowd Funding, Direct Public Offering methods: Intrastate Exemption (Reg D 504), Reg D 506c, Reg CF and Reg A+. This short format episode of The Jake Dunlap Show explores the top three moments of life before 25 that shaped someone to be the person they are today. Sharing his story is David Meltzer, Co-Founder of Sports 1 Marketing and Founder of David Meltzer Enterprises. Growing up poor had a profound effect on David and he would never forget the example shown by his mother that he can outwork anyone to achieve the pinnacles of success. As he grew older, and being surrounded by affluence, David had access to a better education but it also gave him the impression that he was never good enough. This negative self-talk, for better or worse, drove him to prove that he actually was worthy of success. He would follow his brother's advice and pursue what truly interested him, which turned out to be law. But keeping an open mind as his successes as an oil and gas litigator piled up, he entered sales with the goal of becoming rich. He would become a multi-millionaire by the age of 30 and had everything he could ever want, except he wasn't happy.Listen to the full podcast on David's meteoric rise to the top, the arrogance which was his downfall, and the undefeatable drive in him to overcome adversity to come out better than ever before.QUOTES:07:05 "I learned that through football because the minute I stepped on a field, they laughed at me, scoffed at me, made fun of me, and then I got the ball. And they applauded me. And I did the same thing with greater things later on in my life."08:03 "My mom put us in a place in an affluent area with the better schools because she understood how the energy worked that you surround yourself with the right people, the right ideas, and the right teacher, and the right coaches, and the right sports."14:24 "This is the best piece of advice I'd ever gotten, and I still probably maybe have ever gotten, (my brother) said David, you need to be more interested than interesting."18:16 "Just because someone loves you, does not mean they give you good advice. I almost missed out on an unbelievable opportunity that ended up, 9 months out of law school, making me a millionaire."19:12 "There's the ignorant, arrogant people, which was the Dave Meltzer from the time he was 5 until the time he was 35 worth over a hundred million dollars and had everything that everybody in the world wished for, but took it for granted."More about DavidDavid earned his law degree from Tulane University Law School and he would become a successful oil and gas litigator. In pursuit of even more financial success, he dove in to sell legal research on the internet in 1992 which made him a millionaire in just 9 months.By 1995, he would sell his company for 3.4 billion dollars and this would catapult him to the top of Silicon Valley, raising hundreds of millions of dollars in capital. David would become CEO of Samsung's first smartphone division, PC-E Phone too.At this point, David was already enjoying the material trappings of such immense success including owning mansions, Ferraris, golf courses, and much more. For all his success, however, he would end up losing 100 million dollars and end up starting from scratch and rebuilding everything he had lost with newfound wisdom, focus, and empathy for the people around him.David has written bestselling books including Connected to Goodness, Compassionate Capitalism, and Game-Time Decision Making. Amway's social impact initiatives are more than obligatory, one-off or impulsive, well-publicised charitable or philanthropic acts of giving. Indeed, out side of the ABO force itself and those directly impacted, there uis very little publicity. The reason? "It's just who we are." The Covid epidemic is clear witness of this. As Amway Business Owners for 30 years, we sometimes hear erroneous, even downright scurrilous, observations about our business and business model. This saddens us because Amway is so close to our hearts, it being a concept based upon the belief of co-founders Rich deVos and Jay van Andel in the virtues of free enterprise based upon the ideals of Compassionate Capitalism as outlined in Rich deVos's book of the same name. This blog is based upon Albert Einstein's observation that: "Anybody can 'know'. The point is to understand." Therefore, from our personal experience, we hope to correct some misconceptions and provide some insights into our business model, starting with the Amway Sales and Marketing Plan, that are not apparent at first sight. My wife and I have had quite a journey and we will never regret having taken the road less travelled. Welcome to our podcast. Michael Skolnik, co-founder of Soze Agency, a social impact agency selling compassion, equity, and authenticity, believes that, if his company is going to build creative campaigns about these values, then the company itself has to operate internally according to these values. How is that implemented? Soze Agency is a worker-owned cooperative. Vacation time is unlimited. What? How does that work? Soze employees are deeply vested in the success of the company . . . because, to varying degrees, they own it. Michael gave 62% of the company to his workers in the first 3 years and divests himself of 8% more of his ownership every year. In 7 years, he will be out. It is, he says, “an experiment in compassionate capitalism,” a model he would like to see in many more companies. He wants to see everyone win . . . and believes this is one way to make it possible. Employees at Soze don't take unlimited vacations because they know the company they own and the bonuses they receive depend on their being there and doing the work. Michael started his career and attended his first South by Southwest conference as a filmmaker, which is a medium for storytelling. Today, his company is rooted in storytelling. At South by Southwest's March 2019 conference, he participated in a panel, “Moments, Momentum, Movement,” which addressed how cultural “moments become movements, what's happening now in America and where we are, the work that we do and how that correlates to this temperature rise in the heat of this country, and how we hold onto that for the long term.” Michael feels this country is in a “tough spot,” uncertain about where it is going and what it wants to become. In the marketing world, this is reflected in brands' insecurity about how to interact with their customers in critical “moments.” Younger people, in particular, are demanding that companies respond. Michael emphasizes the importance of authentic and relevant communication. Michael can be reached on his company's website at: https://www.wearesoze.com/, on Twitter at: @WeAreSoze, on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-skolnik-4998365/, or on FaceBook at: https://www.facebook.com/wearesoze/
