"People come to us knowing they want vitality back but struggling actually to make the change out of fear." — Dani Sheriff Dani Sheriff is the founder of the HA Society, a specialty coaching practice dedicated to helping women recover their missing menstrual cycles. With years of expertise in the nutrition, sports, and fitness industries, Dani specializes in the fertility awareness method as a diagnostic tool. As a certified fertility awareness practitioner, she guides women in optimizing their menstrual cycles, helping them achieve or avoid pregnancy naturally. Dani is also the host of the Hypothalamic Amenorrhea Podcast, where she brings attention to issues related to menstrual health. Episode Summary: In this episode of "Oh, My Health… There is Hope!" hosted by Jana Short, the spotlight is on the often-overlooked issue of hypothalamic amenorrhea (HA). Dani Sheriff, the founder of the HA Society, joins Jana to discuss her journey through missing menstrual cycles and the revelation that what seemed like an inconvenience was actually a significant health indication. Dani's personal struggle and her path to recovery have fueled her mission to guide other women through similar challenges and create a safe space to discuss reproductive health issues usually left in the shadows. Dani Sheriff sheds light on the prevalence of hypothalamic amenorrhea among women who engage in intense exercise, have restrictive diets, or both — often under the misconception that a missing period can be ignored. This episode explores how lifestyle changes can help restore hormonal balance, emphasizes the importance of embracing one's body needs, and challenges harmful societal standards surrounding femininity and health. Whether you're aware of HA or hearing about it for the first time, Dani's insights offer a fresh perspective on tackling reproductive health issues through holistic methods rather than temporary fixes. Key Takeaways: Understanding HA: Hypothalamic amenorrhea (HA) occurs when a woman's menstrual cycle is absent due to insufficient energy intake and excessive exercise, leading to chronic low hormone levels. Health Implications: Missing periods are not just a fertility issue; they can lead to serious health problems like osteoporosis and chronic low estrogen if left unaddressed. Cultural Pressures: Many women feel pressured to maintain a particular body image, resulting in unhealthy habits that impact their reproductive health. Holistic Recovery Approach: Dani champions a lifestyle change approach to recovering menstrual cycles, involving dietary adjustments, reducing exercise intensity, and embracing a supportive community. The Importance of Community: Creating and being part of a supportive community is crucial for women dealing with HA to find hope, connection, and accountability in their recovery journey. Send us a textWhat if your relentless pursuit of fitness is actually destroying your health? In this eye-opening conversation with Dani Sheriff, we uncover the hidden dangers of extreme fitness regimens that many health-conscious individuals never see coming.Dani takes us through her personal journey as an Olympic weightlifter who lost her period for eight years straight—a condition called hypothalamic amenorrhea that she initially viewed as a badge of honor rather than the serious warning sign it was. With disarming honesty, she shares how her obsession with training six days a week while maintaining strict dietary control created a perfect storm for hormonal disruption. "I was so balls deep in fitness that I thought my period was an optional extra I only needed when it was time to get pregnant," she admits. The revelations in this episode challenge conventional fitness wisdom on both ends of the spectrum. Dani explains how the body, when faced with energy deficits, makes ruthless prioritization decisions—keeping your heart beating and lungs functioning while shutting down "non-essential" systems like reproduction. But the consequences extend far beyond fertility, affecting bone density, cognitive function, and heart health. Perhaps most surprising is the psychological dimension: how rigid food rules and exercise regimens create constant stress that further disrupts hormonal balance. We also explore the middle ground where true health resides. Neither extreme restriction nor complete abandonment of healthy habits serves our bodies well. Dani shares actionable insights for recognizing warning signs and restoring balance—including why sometimes having that donut might actually be better for your hormones than stressing about avoiding it.Whether you're actively pursuing fitness goals, struggling with hormonal issues, or simply curious about optimizing your well-being, this conversation offers fresh perspective on what health really means. As Dani puts it: "Everyone, chill out, have the occasional donut, go to the gym semi-regularly, and don't take any one thing too extreme." Your hormones will thank you.Support the showLearn More at: www.Redefine-Fitness.com

There are a few common objections and fears that come up around recovery for many women, so today I wanted to share what those are and our take on them here at The HA Society. It's normal to have some concerns and worry about things like "is amenorrhea recovery actually going to work for me?" or even "can you get pregnant after HA?" "is my fertility damaged forever because of HA?" and of course "will I gain a TON of weight in this process for nothing?"We don't cover them ALL in this video, but it's a good start. Do you have some other fears or objections that I didn't cover? Let me know what they are over on IG and maybe and I'll include them in a part 2.Check out all of our DIY recovery resourceshttps://thehasociety.com/storeJoin The HA Societyhttp://thehasociety.com/joinWork 1:1 with us to get your period backhttp://thehasociety.com/coachingLearn more about The HA PodcastHTTP://hapodcast.comhttps://www.instagram.com/thehasociety/Follow us on TikTokhttps://tiktok.com/@danisheriffFollow on YouTubehttp://youtube.com/danisheriffLearn more about the host Dani Sheriff!HTTP://instagram.com/danisheriffThe Content is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.
