Beer myths surrounding IPAs and the tiktok crazed helium beer. Special guest Brian Horne of 3 Daughters Brewing.
In Florida's craft beer scene, few breweries have traditions as sought after and anticipated as the holiday village at 3 Daughters Brewing in St. Pete. Now encompassing 13 tables and over 300 individual houses, this is set up and maintained by Bruce Harting, military vet and grandfather to the eponymous 3 daughters. Since his son and daughter-in-law own the brewery, he has been asked to set up this rapidly growing village every year since they opened. We spoke to Bruce to get the details about this year-round project, how big it has grown, and what is coming in the future. Afterward, we chat with Brian Horne, 3 Daughters' VP of Marketing and Sales, to find out what awesome holiday beers are coming to St. Pete to enjoy while taking in all of the lights. Listen in... In this episode, I am joined by Mike Harting, co-owner and CEO of St. Petersburg, Florida's 3 Daughters Brewing.3 Daughters Brewing opened as one of St. Petersburg's first craft breweries and after getting started and surviving the COVID pandemic, 3 Daughters has entered a growth phase that includes several satellite locations, like one in Fit2Run Running Store, one in popular tourist destination Clearwater Beach, and one in the St. Petersburg/ Clearwater Airport.3 Daughters Brewing's Orange IPA is also now available on Allegiant Airlines flights leaving from Florida airports. Mike talks about this growth, as well as his background in the restaurant industry, and drops a few hints on where 3 Daughters Brewing will be growing to in the future. My thanks to this episode's sponsor - Rhythm and Brews by the Bay Beer Festival!Florida Aquarium's Brews by the Bay is back – and it's being turned up a notch! For years, The Florida Aquarium has hosted a successful beer, food and music festival called Brews by the Bay. After a two-year hiatus, the Aquarium is bringing back the event with a twist – a musical twist, that is. Newly named Rhythm and Brews by the Bay, the hit event will now incorporate a concert headlined by ‘90s alternative rock band, the Gin Blossoms, and opened with an acoustic set by Ken Block and Drew Copeland of the band Sister Hazel.Known for popular songs like “Until I Fall Away”, “Found Out About You”, “Hey Jealousy”, "Follow You Down" and their five-time Platinum breakthrough album New Miserable Experience, the Gin Blossoms are a staple alt-rock icon you don't want to miss!Ken Block and Andrew Copeland, co-founders of the platinum-selling band Sister Hazel, hail from our very own Sunshine State. From the same genre, they are known for Billboard hits like “All For You” and "Change Your Mind."As with Brews by the Bay, guests can enjoy endless brews from local craft breweries as they take in all of the amazing views The Florida Aquarium has to offer – be it their 500,000-gallon Coral Reef gallery or the aerial view of Tampa Bay offered by their scenic rooftop terrace.General admission tickets are available for $125.Learn more about the event and purchase tickets here. In this episode, you will again hear a segment I am calling “The Six Pack.” These are six questions to conclude the episode, all related to the beer industry and what the guest has learned in the industry. The “six pack” gives a little more information about Joe and his beer beliefs. You can listen to the podcast here, or on your favorite podcast platform. Well, we are here with a new episode in very weird times. We here at the Brewtiful Game hope you are able to shelter safely in place and stay healthy. And for those of you who can't because you are on the frontline of essential jobs, we very much thank you. We hope we can provide some distraction to your shelter in place days. So, what to talk about in these trying times? On the soccer front, we look at how different leagues are approaching their shutdowns during the pandemic. Plus, we vent our frustrations at U.S. Soccer after their president has just stepped down over the wretched handling of the equal pay case with the U.S. Women's National Team. We think we might have a solution to their problems in our humble opinion. (Spoiler alert: EQUAL PAY!!!) Beyond these soccer and beer topics, we all have clearly been cooped up inside, as this episode gets a little weird. We go from incest Folgers' commercials to Olestra chips that cause anal leakage. In other words, we had a great time letting off steam. We hope you can hang out with us and do the same through our show. Beers reviewed in the show: A Berliner Weisse from Orlando home-brewer Swamp Witch Brewing, and two varieties from 3 Daughters Brewing in St. Pete, FL. - Love the beer, cherish the game. Cinco de Mayo, in a couple weeks with a multitude of concerts, graduations, parties, events, The Kentucky Derby and more so it's best to start planning now! But enough about the future, we talk about the plethora of events that are happening in our area this weekend such as the Sugar Sand Festival at Clearwater Beach, the Pints and Ping Pong Tournament at 3 Daughters Brewing in the 727area and the Sixth Annual Tampa Bay Kid's Triathlon in the 813area. The guys also talk about the Tampa Bay Lightning first round playoff series starting tonight and continuing on Saturday at Amalie Arena so go out and support the hometown Bolts in their pursuit of Lord Stanley's Cup. Today's Guest: Novelist Cheryl Hollon, author of Pane and Suffering: A Webb's Glass Shop Mystery and Shards of Murder. Watch this exclusive Mr. Media interview with Cheryl Hollon by clicking on the video player above! Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience full of people who came to town for the beach and left with happy, full tummies and wild nightlife tales… in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! First novels are hard. Writing them is a challenge, finding a publisher is a major mountain to climb, and promoting them may be the hardest task of all. But when my friend Howard Finberg told me that a friend of his was writing a mystery series set in downtown St. Petersburg, Florida, I committed without even reading the first book. After all, Mr. Media has been describing St. Pete as “the NEW new media capitol of the world” since 2007 – whether the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce likes it or not – so how I could I not help out an up-and-coming writer? CHERYL HOLLON podcast excerpt: "The glass shop in Pane and Suffering is a premise and it comes along with the genre. It's like the Cabot Cove Syndrome: Why would anyone live in Cabot Cove? Because she would write about you and your murder! But the Webb's Glass Shop gives me license to play. I can concentrate on a different type of glass in each book. The first book is about stained glass. The second is about fusing glass and about judging an art festival. And the third book is about recycling glass." You can LISTEN to this interview with novelist CHERYL HOLLON, author of PANE AND SUFFERING, by clicking the audio player above! Cheryl Hollon’s first mystery is Pane and Suffering. The pane she is referring to is spelled P-A-N-E as in a pane of glass. That established, it is nonetheless a story of the pain – P-A-I-N – endured by our heroine, Savannah Webb, following the sudden death of her father, the owner of Webb’s Glass Shop in the booming-yet-still-quaint Grand Central District of downtown St. Petersburg. Hollon uses the invented location to share some love with an endless array of real-life St. Pete landmarks and restaurants, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Casita Taqueria, Queen’s Head, 3 Daughters Brewing and so much more. CHERYL HOLLON podcast excerpt: "I think my writing finally matured to the point it was enjoyable to read. That sounds so simple but it is devilishly hard. I enjoyed having a person-to-person critique group. That was incredibly useful." It is, of course, a first novel and so it’s not perfect. But it is a mix of intrigue, detective work and recognizable places that anyone who lives in the Burg or who has visited in the last five years will find entertaining. Key interview moments: • 5:45 Cheryl Hollon cites influences such as Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers and Louise Penny; • 13:30 Webb's Glass Shop is a vehicle for Hollon's storytelling the same way that Cabot Cove is for Jessica Fletcher in "Murder, She Wrote"; • 20:15 After years of writing, what pushed Hollon from unpublished amateur to published author? Cheryl Hollon Website • Facebook • Twitter • Goodreads • LibraryThing The Party Authority in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland!
