Today, we're picking the brains of one of the most influential figures of the modern English game.David Dein was on the board at Arsenal for 24 years and was a significant voice at the FA for many of them, too. In that time, he brought Arsène Wenger to England, helped assemble one of the greatest sides of all time, and forced through the commercial behemoth that is the Premier League. Arsenal fans have also blamed him for bringing the Kroenke family into the fold. He's certainly been at the heart of a lot of change down the years. So today, we're asking what he makes of the game now: from its owners, to its Super League, to its money.Who would you like Kate to speak to next? Find us on socials @FootballRamble. The Premier League launched as The Premiership in 1992 and football in England was transformed. But as we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the start of this global phenomenon, we shouldn't forget that football did exist PPL - Pre Premier League. In the decade prior to the formation of the league, the 1980s, football's fortunes ebbed and flowed, but it left an indelible mark on the players and supporters who fell in love with the game prior to its Premier League existence. It was a world of one club men like Steve Perryman and Trevor Brooking who were icons of the English game. But the fans still revered the greats of the past like Pele, Cruyff and Charlton who had forged their reputations in previous eras. New managers like Alex Ferguson were trying to make their mark, and established managers like Keith Burkinshaw were winning trophies but fearing for the more commercial future as new leaders in the boardroom - men like Irving Scholar at Tottenham and David Dein at Arsenal - were re-shaping the structure of the game in response to tragedy and opportunity, supported by advisors like Alex Fynn. Foreign players like Ossie Ardiles were starting to make their mark, and managers like John Lyall were assessing the merits of bringing more into the English game. Agents like Jerome Anderson were scouring Europe for new players whilst starting to support their clients' desire to secure a better financial present and future, and coaches like West Ham's Tony Carr were trying to develop the skills in players that seemed to be disappearing in a league that became more muscular and direct in style. Media coverage was limited, but a new breed of journalists like Henry Winter were joining the ranks of the football press to bring a new insightful style of match reporting, and radio stations like LBC - led by Steve Tongue - provided the best access to the Saturday experience in the home.LBC was also the place that my dad, Ken Goldman, began his football journalism career and his archive of interviews from this era provides an incredible insight into football in England in the 1980s. In this extended episode you'll hear from all of the people above, whether they were interviewed in the 80s or sharing their recent memories of this period. I fell in love with football in the 1980s, and it was a joyous and emotional journey of revelation and reflection for me to go back to the decade that provided the platform for the Premier League that is now celebrating another milestone. I hope you enjoy the journey too! Finally many thanks to everyone who contributed as an interviewee and who helped me to connect with so many insightful and helpful people.

High Schoolers now have Trucking Class. We recently sat down and interviewed a teacher from Patterson High School in Patterson California. Along with David Dein, Teacher, Instructor and former Trucker himself, he was joined by Lindsey Trent, President of the Next Generation In Trucking Association. Mentor to Trucking. Back in the day when a man could teach his grandson or his own child how to drive a tractor trailer, he could also help him get a job driving for a living. But today it is allot different. Insurance companies rule the industry and dictate who can drive. Having a mentor was almost a thing of the past until now. Patterson High School is changing the way boys and girls at the senior level are getting started In the trucking industry. They now have a class that teaches everything about being a trucker. They teach all things from road hazards to all safety aspects. of the industry, they even teach CB language. Thats right, these kids know what "Hammer down, Smokey, Chicken house and Yard Stick mean. Dein is teaching these kids how to be a man or a woman that navigates safely and productively. Dein told us the most important thing to him is that these kids are pursuing this career because its "what they want to do". He explained how, money will come to the ones that are in it for the lifestyle and not the money itself. Dein seemed to have great heart in wanting his students to succeed in the industry that he himself fell in love with years ago. HIGH SCHOOLERS NOW HAVE TRUCKING CLASS. Tune in and hear this intriguing interview with Dein and Trent. Lindsey also shares that great passion for these youngsters and has a no quit attitude when it comes to promoting the future of these kids and the industry itself. We will be checking in to see where this new approach to helping grow the ever growing "driver shortage in America". This is our opinion has a great chance of being a great solution to this huge problem. It's a quick one this week. We were supposed to start at this podcast at 7:30, but we started recording at five to (5-2 - see what we did there?) but there's still plenty of time to celebrate the greatest team in north London and step the management discussion up a gear and question whether the problem is further upstairs than previously discussed. Nick True comes in this week with his 'perfect triangle' and Ben Winston 'Churchill' has someone new to disagree with. Boyd Hilton chairs with the usual dignity.
