David Gough, Gaelic football referee, discusses abuse of referees ahead of a Joint Committee on Sport meeting on the matter.
It's hard to remember a time when football wasn't in David Gough's life. We're talking GAA – which David first started playing when he was just a child in Ireland. Soon, he got into refereeing – and since then, he hasn't looked back. As one of the top officials in Gaelic football, he's done everything there is to do in the sport – and he also made headlines when he opened up about the fact he's gay. We've wanted to have David on the podcast for a long time – and this episode really delivers with a truly brilliant guest. There's so much we talk about – finding sport as a youngster; David's refereeing journey; the pressures that come with elite officiating; deciding to open up about his sexuality and what happened afterwards; and how he switches off. Honestly, this is a cracker – and we're so glad David took the time to join us. In this second of our 2 part special with All-Ireland referee David Gough, we ask the question - Are we doing enough to make our organisation more inclusive - to combat discrimination and ensuring that from dressing room to pitch to stands, we are all one family? While we can all pat ourselves on the back and thing we're all doing great, just how is the GAA for LGBT and minorities? Do people in rural areas feel comfortable living the lives they wish? David continues to fight for inclusiveness and discusses one excellent project in Irish schools that just might be a game changer. And on a personal level, what else is left for a referee when they've reffed the biggest game of them all? Is there a referee's union? And do referees watch matches or other referees?
Is it safe to be gay while playing sport? Do you feel sporting organisations are doing enough to enable their gay members to come out? It comes as Gay Premiere League footballer revealed he’s too scared to come out and begged League chiefs for help in an open letter to the Irish Sun. There are currently no openly gay players in the Premiere League, despite the organisation’s inclusivity policy. There have been openly gay GAA and Rugby players, but why is the biggest football league in the world so different? David has been a great friend of the GAA in Europe and continues to support refereeing initiatives in our region. And as we mention at the top of the show, sure he's almost from Louth so we can let him away with being from Meath!

The displays at the Tiagarra Cultural Centre and Museum (https://tiagarra.weebly.com/) in Devonport, Tasmania, Australia were built in 1976 (https://tiagarra.weebly.com/tiagarra-opening-and-timeline-1975---1979.html) by non-indigenous citizens and scientists without consulting Aboriginal Tasmanians. David Gough (http://www.utas.edu.au/community/naidoc/community-bio-david-gough), chairperson of the Six Rivers Aboriginal Corporation, (https://www.facebook.com/groups/434417366698696/) remembers visiting the museum when he was younger and seeing his own culture presented as extinct (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aboriginal_Tasmanians). Today, Gough is the manager of Tiagarra. When he took over, one of the first things he did was put masking tape over the inappropriate and incorrect descriptions and write in the correct information. As Gough explains, racist language covered up and written over by the very people it describes is the perfect metaphor for what Tiagarra was in the past and what it is going to be in the future. On this episode, Gough and fellow Six Rivers Aboriginal Corporation board member Sammy Howard give a special tour of the museum, describe using the museum to educate members of their community and the wider public, and discuss the future of Tiagarra (https://duckduckgo.com/?q=Tiagarra+Mersey+Bluff&t=h_&ia=web). This month on Museum Archipelago, we’re taking you to Tasmania (https://www.museumarchipelago.com/tags/tasmania).
