The Global Impact of US Economic Policies The international economic policies of the United States have shifted dramatically since the inauguration of Donald Trump as president at the end of January. Thus far, the most impactful have been a series of historically large tariff announcements on most countries in the world. Former US Treasury Economist, Brad Setser examines these policy changes and their implications for the US economy, global trade and investment flows, financial markets, and the role of the dollar as the world's reserve currency. He also discusses his work on US corporate tax strategies. Brad Setser is the Whitney Shepardson Senior Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. Mr Setser served as a Senior Advisor to the United States Trade Representative from 2021 to 2022, where he worked on the resolution of a number of trade disputes. He had previously served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for International Economic Analysis in the U.S. Treasury from 2011 to 2015, and as a Director for International Economics on the staff of the National Economic Council and the National Security Council. He has published widely, including co-authoring, with Nouriel Roubini, Bailouts and Bail-ins: Responding to Financial Crises in Emerging Economies, and has contributed to publications such as Foreign Affairs, Finance and Development and Global Governance.

While much focus has been on potential tariff impacts under a Trump administration, Steve highlights the possible benefits of supply-side measures. The conversation also covers the drivers behind the rise in bond yields since the Fed's rate cut and the medium-term outlook for fiscal policy and bonds.-----EXCEPTIONAL RESOURCE: Find Out How to Build a Safer & Better Performing Portfolio using this FREE NEW Portfolio Builder Tool-----Follow Niels on Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube or via the TTU website.IT's TRUE ? – most CIO's read 50+ books each year – get your FREE copy of the Ultimate Guide to the Best Investment Books ever written here. And you can get a free copy of my latest book “Ten Reasons to Add Trend Following to Your Portfolio” here.Learn more about the Trend Barometer here.Send your questions to info@toptradersunplugged.comAnd please share this episode with a like-minded friend and leave an honest Rating & Review on iTunes or Spotify so more people can discover the podcast.Follow Alan on Twitter.Follow Stephen on Twitter.Episode TimeStamps: 02:25 - Introduction to Steve Miran05:53 - Why did Miran write his paper on Activist Treasury Issuance?10:24 - How Quantitative Easing and Exchange Traded Instruments work15:26 - Treasury is not a market timer17:39 - Getting lost in the Fed jargon21:06 - What is driving the increasing yields?24:38 - The refunding - Miran's expectations27:26 - The state of the labour...

The US Treasury's focus on issuing short-term bills to limit price discovery at the back end of the yield curve is keeping interest rates down on longer maturity instruments. In this podcast, IBKR Senior Economist Jose Torres and IBKR Chief Market Strategist Steve Sosnick interview Nouriel Roubini and Stephen Miran to explore the downside of the Treasury as an activist issuer.

As we wind down this year, let us look back and contemplate the past year in terms of economic growth and discuss what's the outlook for the upcoming year. In September 2023, financial well being sentiment found much needed stability, although the Fed held rates and signaled elevated rates for longer, but there are some who predict the US. economic growth will buckle under mounting headwinds early next year with a shallow recession. That's what Nouriel Roubini and others have predicted. Real GDP will grow at about 2. 2 percent and then fall to about 0. 8%. The consumer spending actually held up despite the elevated inflation and high interest rates in the past , couple of months and the growth that seemed to be weakened in the first quarter also bounced back in Q2.  All those are the numbers, but to package all that I have with me on my pod today, Mr. Arvind Mallik. He's the managing partner of KMF Investments which is a pure pay for performance private investment partnership based out of Denton, Texas. KMF seeks a long term capital appreciation by investing in companies whose intrinsic value is significantly higher than the market price. And since its founding in 2008 KMF has found opportunities in the world dominating franchises, hard assets below replacement cost businesses at large, discounts to liquidation value, and firms with beneficial exposure to rising interest rates. The whole concept behind this is retaining value and increasing the value addition as we call it in finance terms. And Mr. Malik has education to back it up with a degree in chemical engineering  and bioengineering from  UC Berkeley, and also has a MS in chemical engineering from MIT.

Business loans, also known as “Commercial and Industrial” lending is shifting as the landscape of the economy pivots. The boys break down what you need to know and what this means for you. They spend some time on the generational differences in the expectation of workers as they dive in to a CNBC article that states “American workers are demanding almost $80,000 a year to take a new job.” In what is arguably the world's worst segue they jump in to the car market and some of the changes the industry is experiencing that are early indicators of strain on the consumer. Chris provides a colorful backstory on the never-ending “beef” between Nouriel Roubini and CZ. Saied awkwardly forces in an unnecessary article on mortgage rates to cap the show and Haroon fumbles the audio, but blames it on the “inter-webs.” We also got a new, spectacular review. One of the world's most well-known economists believes the banking crisis is far from over, and that U.S. authorities are merely buying themselves some time by insisting the banking system is “sound.” Nouriel Roubini, chief executive of consulting firm Roubini Macro Associates, argued on Friday that the financial system will be unable to cope with the sheer scale of private and public debt that has already been amassed, spawning a “trilemma” that will soon trigger another phase of panic. In this episode of The Higher Standard, Chris and Saied examine this news and determine the effect it will have on the economy as a whole. They discuss the news that an inflation gauge that the Federal Reserve follows closely rose slightly less than anticipated in February, providing some hope that interest rate hikes are helping ease price increases.Chris and Saied look at comments from asset management giant BlackRock stating that investors are too confident the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates this year and could pay the price later. They also offer some thoughts on Jim Cramer's assertion that he's still searching for the first sign of a recession, even though it's all anyone seems to be talking about.Join Chris and Saied for this fascinating and informative conversation.Enjoy! What You'll Learn in this Show:Why Moody's expects home prices to decline about 4% both in 2023 and in 2024.The impact of the Federal Reserve's rate increases on banks. Why the Fed is on track to lose 100 billion by the end of the year. Why markets are betting that the Fed will start cutting rates by July. And so much more...Resources:"Key Fed inflation gauge rose 0.3% in February, less than expected" (article from CNBC)"Home prices suddenly jump after several months of declines" (article from CNBC)"Bank Stress, Softer Inflation Just Made Fed's Life Easier" (article from The Wall Street Journal)"BlackRock warns that investors are making a mistake by betting on the Fed to cut rates" (article from CNBC)"‘Dr. Doom' Nouriel Roubini warns economic ‘trilemma' is making a financial crash inevitable" (article from Fortune)"A recession may be coming, but Jim Cramer says he's not seeing the early signs yet" (article from CNBC)

A look at the financial and political windfall the indictment has been for Trump 2:05 NYC is perhaps damaged by Trump's financially-incentivized lockdowns more than any other city, but the crowd doesn't know or care — they hate Trump for nonsense reasons. He draws on decades of economic research as well as his experience accurately predicting, advising on, and observing responses to the 2008 global financial crisis, and he's the author of "Megathreats: Ten Dangerous Trends that Imperil our Future, and How to Survive Them.”

Nouriel Roubini, a.ka. "Dr. Doom," became famous for predicting the 2008 global financial crisis. Now, he is back with another grim forecast, in his new book, "MegaThreats: Ten Dangerous Trends That Imperil Our Future, And How to Survive Them." He and Kara discuss the book, his prediction that we're headed towards a stagflationary debt crisis, and US-China relations. Dr. Roubini also explains why cryptocurrency is fundamentally flawed (in fact, he thinks it's less sophisticated than what the Flinstone's had).  Before the interview, Kara and Nayeema discuss Sheryl Sandberg's new report, “Women in the Workplace,” a joint venture by her organization, Lean In, and McKinsey & Company. And they talk about China's president Xi Jinping — who is leaning into a third term as General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party.
