Here's this week's Left of Lansing "Monday Musing" for August 26, 2024. "Florida" Mike Rogers is hoping to become Michigan's next U.S. Senator after leaving our state for years to rake-in loads of cash in defense contractor lobbying. Meanwhile, Democratic candidate, Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin who worked in military intelligence and then joined Congress to help improve the lives of Michiganders and the rest of the country. Slotkin said at last week's Democratic Party Convention that America leads, and she's proving it by fighting for people. However, like his Dear Leader Trump, "Florida" Mike has made a career of using government to help himself while making it harder for government to help the rest of us. Let's help Elissa Slotkin defeat "Florida" Mike Rogers this November by donating to her campaign! Not only that, but "Florida" Mike's got some unseemly Michiganders helping his campaign, including the vile and ignorant Meshawn Maddock. Let's help Sarah-May Seward defeat Maddock's husband, Matt Maddock, in the 51st State House District this November by donating to her campaign! Radio Free Flint Podcast: Wayne Kramer of MC5 Wayne Kramer is an American guitarist, singer, songwriter, producer, and film and television composer. He was co-founder of the Detroit rock group MC5, and Rolling Stone named him one of the top 100 guitarists of all time. Wayne was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. The MC5 recorded and performed the song "Kick Out the Jams" which became an anthem for the protest movement of the 1960's. Along with that, came a passion for rock and roll, social and economic justice. The MC5 emerged as an iconic American rock band that was in the vanguard of the social and cultural revolution of the 1960's. The lyrics to "Kick Out the Jams" were controversial and required the band to shape the song for the audience or face arrest or being banned from the airwaves. Wayne Kramer's band performed at a counter-protest at the 1968 Democratic Party Convention. The police moved in and assaulted many in the crowd when the performance was over. The actions by the Chicago Police Department have been called a police "riot" by historians and those charged with reviewing the police misconduct. The MC5 performed at Sherwood Forest in Davison, Michigan. The bands' performance there was halted by the Davison Township Police. They didn't like the lyrics to the song Kick Out The Jams! There is more connection to Davison, the MC5 was managed by Davison native, John Sinclair. Sinclair was a radical (for the times) leftist who organized the White Panther Party to complement the Black Panther Party of the late 1960's and 70's. That activity earned Sinclair and band members of the MC5 the scrutiny of the FBI and the US Justice Department. Jailed for possession of marijuana, Sinclair, became an international cause celeb for those who thought his punishment was too harsh for mere possession of pot and for those who sought to legalize the weed. After the demise of his band, the MC5, Wayne Kramer fell into alcoholism and drug abuse. Eventually he was prosecuted for a drug offense and sentenced to a federal prison. After his release Kramer returned to his work as a musician. Eventually Wayne found a substance-free lifestyle. Wayne heads the American chapter of Jail Door Guitars, "an independent initiative which he founded that aims to provide instruments to those who are using music as a means of achieving the rehabilitation of prison inmates. Wayne Kramer has written a memoir, The Hard Stuff: Dope, Crime, the Mc5, and My Life of Impossibilities. You can follow Wayne Kramer at his Official Facebook Page #mc50 #waynekramer #kickoutthejams #jaildoorguitars The intro music heard on this podcast "Flint City Blues" was provided with permission by Matt McDermaid, the Axxe Man of Flint, Michigan. Penny Hess, Chair of African People's Solidarity Committee and Jesse Nevel, Chair of Uhuru Solidarity Movement discuss the Democratic Party Convention, the vice presidential candidacy of Kamala Harris and the crisis of imperialism.
It’s official. The ticket is Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. The task now is to get rid of the acute condition of Trump, so we get rid of the chronic conditions of market fundamentalism, white supremacy, and sexism. The Democratic Party Convention has come and gone. Looks like the Lincoln Project’s efforts to convince establishment Democrats to lean to the right have had an impact. I’m not sure the Republican Convention will have as many Republicans as the Democrats did. The DNC quietly dropped the demand to end fossil fuel subsidies from its platform. And they did that as California is being overrun by climate change-induced wildfires for the second year in a row, as a new report shows record glacial melting in Greenland, and as Iowa farmers are just digging out after being ravaged by a devastating Derecho storm. QAnon candidates like Marjorie Taylor Green in Georgia are winning. Let the insanity begin. Steve Bannon is arrested for allegedly defrauding hundreds of thousands of donors through his “We Build the Wall” fundraising campaign. Bannon, along with three others raised more than $25 million, about a million dollars went right into Bannon’s pockets. Perhaps the best part of this story is that he was arrested with the help of the US Postal Service Inspection Service. Stamp that shit. Not only is Trump trying to throw a wrench in the work of the US Postal Service, but a review by David Sirota’s newsletter, TMI, shows that Trump’s political appointments to the USPS have been steering contracts to big dollar Trump donors, like Wayne Hoovestol who owns the anti-union Eagle Express Lines. That was Jim Cox, head of the House Labor and Industry Committee, that you heard at the top of the podcast. He, like the House Republicans, don’t think it’s government’s responsibility to take care of their citizens during a pandemic As some public schools, colleges, and universities spit in the face of science and open up for face-to-face classes, we are already seeing spikes in coronavirus cases. North Carolina State does an about-face and sends students back home after a cluster of cases. That follows UNC-Chapel Hill’s abrupt shift to all online classes after an almost immediate outbreak as students arrived on campus. Over 130 students tested positive during the first week on campus and students are still struggling to leave. Notre Dame has more than 300 cases with several members of the football team testing positive. Now the university shifted to all online classes until at least September 2. Michigan State put the kibosh on its hybrid learning plans after seeing the outbreaks at universities across the country. The University of Connecticut evicted multiple students from dorms after they held a large dorm party with no masks or social distancing. So far, UConn has placed 25 students in quarantine after they came in contact with several students who tested positive for COVID-19. We could go on and on. The New York Times is trying to keep track of the total number of cases at higher ed institutions as it looks like they are becoming COVID-19 hotspots. Kutztown University faculty members and students don plague doctor masks to protest the administration’s reopening plans. The silent protest took place in front of KU President Kenneth Hawkinson’s taxpayer-funded house as students began to move into their dorms. As next week’s start of classes draws near, the university administration has to dramatically rework its “plan” as reality has shown their original plans as a bunch of happy talk and smoke and mirrors. But no worries. KU’s Provost sent out a one-sentence update yesterday saying simply, “Kindness can change someone’s day.” See, everything is fine. Syracuse and UConn blame students. KU’s University Senate President plays class politics and gives the administration a pass. What’s happening at Free Will Brewing. Raging Chicken studio gets an upgrade.
A few thoughts after hearing The Rising played at this year's Democratic Party Convention
Real Deal Reports (19 August 2020) with Mike Bara in Seattle and Kristen Meagan in Traverse City. The Democratic Party Convention moves forward as a "sad telethon". Fairly astonishing how many involved in RussiaGate are being featured here, where photos of Bill Clinton with one of Jeffrey Epstein's "girls" appeared the day before he spoke. The Democrats seem to have no sense of shame, where there are signs that Black Americans have grown weary of being taken for granted by the party and are increasingly likely to move to support Donald Trump in sufficient numbers to guarantee that the Democrats cannot win. New documentaries are exposing the CV scam and the diabolical agenda behind it, which ought to be of concern to every American. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/realdealmedia/support

Today on our Sojourner Truth weekly roundtable, reactions to Kamala Harris as Biden's vice presidential pick. Trump's continued attacks on the post office and mail in voting and he revisits the birtherism strategy he used against President Barack Obama, this time against Harris. The Democratic Party Convention begins on Monday, August 17th. The convention takes place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but most of it will be held virtually. Does the party platform represent the change protesters on the street have been demanding or is it just more of the same? Are progressive democrats, represented in the Sanders/Warren/AOC camp, being sidelined? Also, access to university to Black students yet again under attack as Trumps justice department claims that Yale University discriminates against white and Asian students. Despite U.S. deaths from COVID-19 on the rise, Donald Trump continues to pressure all schools to reopen. On the international front, a sea change in the Middle East as Israel and the United Arab Emirates strike a U.S.-brokered deal that Palestinians say stab them in the back. Tensions between the U.S. and China as well as the U.S. and Iran continue to rise. Our panelists are Laura Carlsen, Jackie Goldberg and Dr. Gerald Horne.

Episode 133: I just returned from the great city of San Francisco which hosted the state Democratic Party Convention. And in my audio bag are most of the speeches of the Democratic presidential candidates who gave their pitches to the delegates—California, with a much earlier primary than usual, will potentially have a decisive say about who will be the eventual Democratic nominee. This week, Elizabeth Warren starts off a mini-series of the speeches, which I will bring to you in the coming weeks. Warren gave, in my opinion, the sharpest, most focused, clear policy and philosophical speech of them all. Then, Tefere Gebre, the executive vice president of the AFL-CIO, joins me for a deep discussion about worker uprisings, the racism of trade and tariffs and internal politics inside the Federation that have targeted him. And I wrap up with my favorite topic, taxes. Jessica Schieder, a federal tax policy fellow at the Institute for Taxation and Economic Policy, walks us through some new ideas to help moderate- and low-income people. -- Jonathan Tasini Follow me on Twitter @jonathantasini Sign up for The Working Life Podcast at: www.workinglife.org Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/jonathan.tasini.3
Have the values of honesty and truthfulness lost importance with President Donald Trump in the White House? To try to answer these questions, PolitiFact California reporter Chris Nichols talked with half a dozen delegates at last weekend’s state Democratic Party Convention in San Francisco. Delegates were asked about the importance of those values in their choice of candidates. Since the stage has been set by Trump — who has had some struggles with the truth — the question is: do people feel that the truth has been degraded? Some said we live in a “post-fact” world. A place where ‘truthiness’ from our politicians is good enough. That word, “truthiness,” was coined by Stephen Colbert, host of CBS’ “The Late Show.”

As the flailing Hillary Clinton camp steps-up its attacks on Bernie Sanders, her poll numbers continue to drop—and for the first time, have her losing to Donald Trump in a general election. On the cusp of the Democratic Party Convention, millions of Sanders' supporters are wondering what to do other than vote for a 'lesser of two evils.' To gain some insight, Abby Martin interviews Kshama Sawant, an open socialist who just won re-election to Seattle's city council—who also ran an insurgent campaign against the party establishment—about her advice to the Sanders' movement, and how struggles like the Fight for 15 can keep advancing regardless of the presidency. Donald Trump making headline news over what is described as his criticism and insult toward the father of Humayun Khan, a Muslim Army Captain killed in Iraq in 2004, by a suicide bomber. The father, Khizr Khan at the Democratic Party Convention said Trump has "sacrificed nothing and no one" and offered to lend Donald Trump his copy of the U.S. Constitution. Trump's response on ABC TV was "I think I've made lots of sacrifices. I work very, very hard" and raised millions for military veterans. Trump also questioned why Mrs. Khan didn't speak, saying "maybe she wasn't allowed to have anything to say, you tell me." See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Is Trump a racist appealing to white voters and building his campaign on racism and fear? Or is he nothing of the sort? Are you a Donald Trump supporter and do you believe you are accused of being a racist because you support him? - Marlene Hope retired from the Calgary Police Service in August of 2015 as a Detective. Prior to that rank she had been a Sergeant and a 26 year veteran of the CPS. For the first time anywhere, Marlene Hope joins Roy to declare the Calgary Police Service as a "broken" entity where bullying, intimidation and fear are a daily reality. Guests: Marlene Hope, retired Detective, Calgary Police Service, and Patricia Ferris, psychologist in Calgary - The NDP government filed a "bizarre" lawsuit this week against power companies, including utilities which are owned, or partly owned by the cities of Calgary and Edmonton in order to stop the companies from backing out of power contracts which have been made less profitable by Alberta's increased carbon costs (taxes, closing of coal powered power generation). The lawsuit names the province's own regulatory agency, the Alberta Utilities Commission for "unlawfully" agreeing in 2000 to terms which allow termination of so-called Power Purchase Arrangements "if a change in law renders the PPA unprofitable, or more unprofitable." Basically, the NDP government is suing its own agency and power companies for reacting to provincial regulations which drive up the price of power and reduce profits. Boy, will I ruffle some feathers with this one! Well, that’s fine: I have never been either politically correct, or a moderate “flip-flopper” like so many… I watched the Democratic Party Convention for awhile last night, and it was… horrendous. There was NO American flag, but a Syrian one and rainbow flags all in evidence. It turns out that the Dems have abandoned actual working people, and have become a party of privileged elites, with welfare and illegal immigrant votes to prop it all up. I waited and waited to hear what Bernie Sanders would say, since he had been conned by Hillary and the rest of the elite, ruling democrats to believe that he and his supporters had a chance at getting the presidential nomination. I waited, and all the rest of us waited, and waited… the elite Dems purposely waited until about 11 PM central time to put him on, and so I, and all the rest of Paleo People (not to mention the stoned Bernie supporters and all people who actually had to go to work the next day) were asleep in their beds! (Inclined, hopefully!) As Bernie started to speak, his Robin Hood-hatted supporters, once he caved in and supported evil Hillary, booed during his whole lackluster, cookie-cutter speech! On a repeat the next day, even I was “feeling the Bern”, a little. The Betrayed Bern of his supporters, that is- it appears, once again, that Socialism and Communism, those kissing cousins, are all about power and perks for the elite- with some crumbs thrown to the supporters. That is the bottom line- no “shining city on a hill”, that is classic conservatism my friends. Today, as I mowed my acreage in 90 degree heat, I listened to Rush Limbaugh wax eloquent on the whole thing: Bottom line? Here is the platform of the New Democrat, Obama and Hillary party: Black Lives Matter, New Black Panthers, Occupy Wall Street, stripping God from their party platform, transgender bathroom advocates, anti-police, pro-death panels, baby butchers! I know, it sounds extreme, doesn’t it? But- doesn’t it also ring completely true?? Everyday, pretty much, there is a new Islamic fundamentalist Terrorist attack, killing innocents in the West, both the US and Western Europe. We have a terrible NON-President Obama who will not even name the enemy! His successor, Hillary Clinton, is just as evil, and will up the ante on the Obama agenda, if elected. She has already betrayed us, giving up our secrets to Russians, Chinese, and other enemies of America. She should be in jail! If we all lived in small tribes, as in the Ancestral lifestyle, Hillary would have been banished from the tribe long ago. Character reveals itself quickly in tribal settings… That is all I will say politically, although I could go on and on and on- I’m sure you could too! The thing I’m tr
There was a great deal of talk about the “low protester turnout” problem at the GOP Convention last week. Many people in the media and on the ground in Cleveland expressed dismay at the ratio of media to actual protesters. It is true that certain times at Public Square resembled a summer camp for media trainees, everyone clamoring for access an argument between a geriatric “Bikers for Trump” delegate and a People’s Resistance spokesman or an anti-fascist and a “Jesus hates everything” enthusiast. Months ago I was at a Donald Trump rally in San Diego and witnessed some intensely wrought protests and counter-protests which repeatedly devolved into violence. By and large, Cleveland was not that. Certain members of the media expressed private dismay at the “lack of action” - the relative tranquility seemed welcome to everyone on a personal level but could prove challenging on a professional one. “If it bleeds it leads” is alive and well. There was little to no bleeding at the GOP Convention. There was intense conversation and argument and protest. There was back and forth. There was democracy, but it didn’t get to fists. This is good progress. Which leads us to the first day of the Democratic Party Convention in Philadelphia. We just arrived in Philly an hour ago and downtown is packed. There are traffic jams everywhere you look. There is a vastly smaller police presence here as compared to Cleveland, where it was customary to look to your right and see a dozen cops waiting in riot gear across from two dozen of their counterparts on the same street. There are small protests going on each corner. The obligatory “Jesus loves you but wants you to suffer” guys have been reduced to a small sideshow on a block far away from the main stem. We spoke to a Bernie delegate from Arizona named Kelly Thornton (Listen to her speak at www.soundcloud.com/liveontapepod/). She recounted the story of shouting down Debbie Wasserman-Schultz at the Florida delegation breakfast this morning. Judging by her tone and level of anger towards the Hillary Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee, there is a severe rift in Philadelphia. If the 40% of the Democratic party which voted for Bernie is intent on continuing to demonstrate their dissatisfaction, this is not going to be a love fest. The first sign I saw said, “Hillary FOr Prison, 2016” and that theme has continued to be visible. The Debbie Wasserman-Schulz question is animating much of the anger. So much for unity and a Convention which would contrast Democratic Party professionalism against the amateur hour of the GOP in Cleveland. Here’s hoping it doesn’t come to fists.
