We're joined by legendary author Barbara Hambly, whom we met at Legacy Expo: A Star Wars Expanded Universe convention in Burbank (Sept 13–14). After seeing her on a panel hosted by Star Warsologies' Melissa Miller, we couldn't resist inviting her on—what was meant to be a quick chat turned into a full conversation. Barbara shares stories from writing Children of the Jedi, Planet of Twilight, and her beloved short stories in Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina and Tales from Jabba's Palace—and even answers fan-favorite questions about Luke Skywalker's love life.

Update from the FEI eventing meeting with Course designer Jay Hambly S6E2
James Franklin has a problem. So, too, does Kevin Hambly. Franklin is the head football coach at Penn State and Hambly is the volleyball coach at Stanford. While they lead teams in different sports, their issue has its roots in the same source: the greed of those who run college football. Franklin's dilemma is that because the conference the Nittany Lions belong to, the Big Ten, a mostly Midwestern league, took in four schools from the West Coast – Oregon, Washington, UCLA and Southern Cal – he has to go on road trips to the Pacific time zone. Unfortunately for Franklin, the runway at the regional airport in State College, Pennsylvania is 6,701 feet long. While that's 20 times the length of a football field, it's not long enough to accommodate larger planes with higher fuel loads that can make cross-country flights, like the one Penn State had to take recently to go to Los Angeles to play USC. As a result, Franklin's team had to take a two-hour bus ride to Harrisburg to catch said flight and leave a day earlier than usual. Going forward, Franklin would like for the State College airport to extend the length of the runway so his team can jet west without a bus. Meanwhile, Hambly's problem is that because the four schools that bolted from the Pac-12 for the Big Ten, weakened the West Coast league that had been in business for decades, other universities, like Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah, all scattered too to find new athletic homes. As a result, Stanford and Cal, two sterling academic institutions which don't have particularly strong football footprints, also had to scramble to find a league for their teams to play. They ended up in the Atlantic Coast Conference, a league that, at last check, is nowhere near the Pacific Ocean. Hambly's volleyball team, a national championship contender, will travel close to 34,000 miles this year, more than any other fall program in college athletics. Yahoo Sports reports that the 25,000 miles the Cardinal will fly just for ACC games is more than the circumference of the Earth. To his credit, Hambly has taken all of this in stride, quipping that his frequent flier status on United is already Premier One K and could get higher. But this is no laughing matter, not for those who still hold on to the quaint notion of college athletics operating to make students more well rounded, athletically, intellectually and personally. Increasingly, however, the world of intercollegiate athletics continues to more closely resemble prostitution, with heretofore pristine academic institutions putting themselves on the stroll for more football bucks, the only question being the price they're willing to set for their virtue. While grabbing all that gridiron scratch, these schools are putting the less visible programs like soccer, swimming, track and, yes, volleyball and those athletes in jeopardy. And there's no sign that this fever will soon break. Having just expanded the college football playoff field from four to 12, there will likely be nothing to slow further conference realignment, short runways and long volleyball journeys notwithstanding. And that's how I see it for this week. You can reach us via email with your questions and comments at Sports at Large at gmail.com. And follow me on Threads and X at Sports at Large. Salt is a vital commodity. For many centuries it sustained life for Scots as seasoning for a diet dominated by grains (mainly oats), and for preservation of fish and cheese. Sea-salt manufacturing is one of Scotland's oldest industries, dating to the eleventh century if not earlier. Smoke- and steam-emitting panhouses were once a common sight along the country's coastline and are reflected in many of Scotland's placenames. The industry was a high-status activity, with the monarch initially owning salt pans. Salt manufacture was later organised by Scotland's abbeys and then by landowners who had access to the sea and a nearby supply of coal. As salt was an important source of tax revenue for the government, it was often a cause of conflict (and military action) between Scotland and England. The future of the industry – and the price of salt for consumers – was a major issue during negotiations around the Union of 1707. Salt: Scotland's Newest Oldest Industry (Birlinn, 2023) edited by Dr. Christopher Whatley and Dr. Joanna Hambley celebrates both the history and the rebirth of the salt industry in Scotland. Although salt manufacturing declined in the nineteenth century and was wound up in the 1950s, in the second decade of the twenty-first century the trade was revived. Scotland's salt is now a high-prestige, green product that is winning awards and attracting interest across the UK. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose forthcoming book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Keegan Cook, Beth Launiere and Kevin Hambly have been stalwarts in Pac-12 women's volleyball leadership. Keegan departed for Minnesota in December, only to see his former Washington Huskies opt for the Big Ten in 2024. Beth is entering her 34th season at Utah, and will begin her final year in the Pac-12 before the Utes slide over to the Big XII. Kevin's Stanford squad is a National Championship contender, but faces an uncertain future in the Pac-12 or elsewhere. The Sun was created six thousand years ago, two thousand years later it deliberately set Mars alight and it will do the same to the Earth in 2025 unless humanity steps up now to prevent it. Spirit confirmed to me the burning of the Earth, saying, "2025 is the year of evil", "The Earth will burn for four years", "The time of fire should be taken seriously from start to finish", and "The world will be turned to ruins," that "The threat is very serious" and that "Terrible things are going to happen".

Today's Flash Back Friday Episode is from Episode #80, which originally aired on July 27, 2015. This week we're going to be speaking to industry expert, Ann Hambly, who is the founder and CEO of 1st Service Solutions, a national service provider and consultancy firm to the commercial real estate industry that provides advice and solutions for anything ranging from the addition or removal of collateral on an existing CMBS loan to the most complex loan restructure for all loan types. And for those of you who might not know what a CMBS loan is here's a quick definition. A CMBS loan, also known as a commercial mortgage-backed security, is a type of fixed-income security that is collateralized by commercial real estate loans. Typically these loans are for commercial properties such as office buildings, hotels, malls, apartment buildings, factories, etc., but not single-family homes. CMBS make up about 2% of the total U.S. fixed income market. In essence, CMBS are created when a bank takes a group of loans on its books, bundles them together, and sells them in securitized form as a series of bonds. Each series will typically be organized in "tranches" from the senior - or highest-rated, lowest-risk issue - to the highest-risk, lowest-rated issue. The senior issue is first in line to receive principal and interest payments, while the most junior issues will be the first to take a loss if a borrower defaults. Investors choose which issue they invest in based on their desired yield and capacity for risk. Today we're going to speak about how Ann's company can help investors navigate the tricky and often times complex CMBS loan process as well as discuss some of the opportunities that might exist from maturing CMBS loans that were created back during the 2005-2008 real estate run-up and how her company can help you capitalize on some of these "soon-to-be" distressed opportunities. Here are a few things you'll learn in our interview with Ann today: What a CMBS loan is What role 1st service solutions play in the CMBS market and the services they provide to real estate investors How Ann was able to grow her company during one of the worst real estate markets in history The opportunity that exists with the $100+ billion of maturing CMBS loans and how you can go about uncovering those that might be distressed What defeasance means when it comes to CMBS loans The benefits of a CMBS loan and how they typically offer much more attractive terms than conventional commercial loans which can include longer amortization, lower rates, non-recourse vs. recourse bank loans, and 10-year balloons instead of 5 or 7 that you have with commercial loans. The number one marketing strategy that she feels is responsible for the great success her company has experienced and how you can apply this same strategy to your real estate business.
