The women who loved Picasso shaped his art in surprising ways.--YOUR NEXT EPISODE:Why we can't let go of Never Let Me Go--"We look at paintings to imagine other worlds, other times. They are doors into an alternative, creative way of life."So writes Sue Roe in her latest book, Hidden Portraits: the Untold Story of Six Women Who loved Picasso. And if there was ever an artist who opened the door to an alternative view of the world, surely Picasso qualifies: unorthodox, exhilarating, and experimental, his art broke new ground and made him the most successful artist of the 20th century. But as is so often the case, his work was underpinned by a series of women - remarkable women - whom Picasso loved, and seemingly attempted to control.Sue Roe's book tells their stories in turn, unveiling their extraordinary lives, exploring the impact they had on the artist and he on them.In doing so it reveals, without moralising, some patterns of behaviour by Picasso which one might conclude were, at best, controlling and manipulative. This opens up the fashionable question in 2025: can we appreciate the art while recognising that the artist could be a very unpleasant human being.--BUYHidden Portraits: the Untold Story of Six Women who Loved PicassoREADPicasso's mistreated muses - book review by Sue PrideauxLISTEN AD-FREEDownload the New Statesman app: iOS / AndroidSTAY IN TOUCHGet our best writing every weekend in The Saturday Read email newsletter Hosted on Acast. When the R.M.S. Titanic struck an iceberg in April of 1912, about 250 of the 1300 passengers were from the United States.  While people with well-known names like Strauss, Guggenheim, Astor, and Widener were aboard the ship, it was primarily the women and children who were saved.   Six men and six women of Laurel Hill were among the passengers.  All of the women survived.  It is their stories we tell of in this episode of All Bones Considered: Laurel Hill Stories. I will tell of other oceanic disasters and give you the basic information about the Titanic.   Fellow Laurel Hill Guide Lora Lewis will tell you about Eleanor Elkins Widener Rice and Charlotte Cardeza, two rich and powerful women who became legendary.  Lora will also briefly cover Charlotte's maid Annie Ward, also interred at Laurel Hill West. Young taphophile Savanna Fisher wanted to tell you about her favorite women onboard, Lily Potter and her daughter Olive. I will tell you about Gretchen Longley, who had gone to Europe with two aunts in order to select her wedding wardrobe.  The sinking delayed her marriage by a year.

In this edition of Witch Hunt Victim Stories, Sarah Jack tells the story of Rebecca Nurse, a victim of the Salem Witch Trials, who was hanged on July 19, 1692. The story of Rebecca Nurse is tragic. Born Rebecca Towne in 1621, Rebecca was seventy-one years old when she was arrested, and she had been in bed a week when she was hauled away from home. She languished in chains more than three months before she was brought out for her trial. At first she was acquitted, but then she was convicted. Next, she was reprieved, but then that was revoked and a death warrant was issued. All the while, Rebecca and her family and friends told anyone who would listen that she was innocent. Refusing to confess to something she did not do, Rebecca ultimately lost her life. She is remembered today in multiple memorials, and her legacy lives on through her countless descendants. Shemos Women's Class: This class waspresented on Tuesday, Parshas Shemos, 21Tevet, 5784, January 2, 2024, at Bais Medrash Ohr Chaim in Monsey, NY. Why Moshe? Why was he chosen as the first and greatest Jewish leader, teacher, and prophet? The Torah does not provide an explicit reason. But it does give us a clue. Often people ask me why the Torah focuses so much on men. The question is strange, because in Genesis, almost every important history-changing decision is made by a woman. And in Shemos, it is six women who are responsible for the entire story of the Egyptian Exodus: Shifra, Puah, Yocheved, Miriam, Pharaohs daughter Batya, and Tziporah. These six extraordinary people refused to bow their heads to the inevitable; they are giants in the story of mankind and in the story of the Jewish people. They were also, it seems, the role models who molded, crafted, and mentored Moses; they taught him how to live, how to think, how to act. The three stories the Torah shares about Moses, which made him the man suitable to be the greatest leader ever, are essentially all stories inspired by these women who impacted his life, wholike our mothers, wives and daughters to this very dayhelped him become the person who would change history forever. The class concludes with a life-changing message by Einav Efrat Danino, the mother of Ori, 24, who was taken captive by Hamas on October 7th 2023, may we see his redemption, and the redemption of all the hostages, very soon.

A serial killer is an individual who commits a series of murders, typically targeting multiple victims over a period of time. They often have a psychological compulsion to kill and derive some form of gratification or satisfaction from their actions. Serial killers are distinct from other types of murderers due to the repetitive nature of their crimes and the specific characteristics that define their behavior.Serial killers typically have a cooling-off period between each murder, during which they may experience a decrease in their desire to kill. This period can vary in length, ranging from days to months or even years. Serial killers also tend to exhibit specific patterns or rituals in their killings, such as selecting victims with similar characteristics or using a particular method of killing. Many serial killers have certain personality traits and psychological disorders that contribute to their violent behavior. These traits may include a lack of empathy, a desire for power and control, fantasies involving violence, and a history of childhood abuse or trauma. Some serial killers may also exhibit manipulative or charismatic behaviors, which they use to gain the trust of their victims.Investigating serial killers can be challenging for law enforcement due to the organized and methodical nature of their crimes. They often take steps to avoid detection, such as choosing victims who are less likely to be missed or disposing of bodies in remote locations. Serial killers may also taunt authorities by leaving behind clues or sending letters to the media, heightening the psychological impact of their crimes.Understanding the motives and psychological factors behind serial killing is an ongoing area of study for criminologists, psychologists, and law enforcement agencies.Efforts to profile and identify serial killers have improved over time, aided by advancements in forensic science, psychological analysis, and the sharing of information between law enforcement agencies. This May marks the 20th anniversary of Annika Sorenstam playing the Bank of America Colonial at Colonial Country Club, where she became the first woman in more than 50 years to play with the men on the PGA Tour. That week was highly anticipated, stressful, and loaded with controversy as more than 300 reporters, hundreds of photographers, and thousands of fans flocked to Texas to see her play. The reactions to her inclusion ranged from supportive to hostile, and though she handled herself admirably both on and off the course, it's no surprise that she never did it again. In a way, Sorenstam was playing for the entire LPGA Tour and women's golf in general that week. She wasn't the first. Two women before her, and three after, also took their turn playing with the men, and the story of those women is one of courage, triumph, failure, and a no small amount of sexism. This is the story of the six women in history who teed it up with the men on the PGA Tour.

Six Women of Salem is the first work to use the lives of a select number of representative women as a microcosm to illuminate the larger crisis of the Salem witch trials. By the end of the trials, beyond the twenty who were executed and the five who perished in prison, 207 individuals had been accused, 74 had been "afflicted," 32 had officially accused their fellow neighbors, and 255 ordinary people had been inexorably drawn into that ruinous and murderous vortex, and this doesn't include the religious, judicial, and governmental leaders. All this adds up to what the Rev. Cotton Mather called "a desolation of names."The individuals involved are too often reduced to stock characters and stereotypes when accuracy is sacrificed to indignation. And although the flood of names and detail in the history of an extraordinary event like the Salem witch trials can swamp the individual lives involved, individuals still deserve to be remembered and, in remembering specific lives, modern readers can benefit from such historical intimacy. By examining the lives of six specific women, Marilynne Roach shows readers what it was like to be present throughout this horrific time and how it was impossible to live through it unchanged. For Your Listening Pleasure all the radio shows available on The 'X' Zone Broadcast Network with our compliments, visit - https://www.spreaker.com/user/xzoneradiotv.Our radio shows archives and programming include: A Different Perspective with Kevin Randle; Alien Cosmic Expo Lecture Series; Alien Worlds Radio Show; America's Soul Doctor with Ken Unger; Back in Control Radio Show with Dr. David Hanscom, MD; Connecting with Coincidence with Dr. Bernard Beitman, MD; Dick Tracy; Dimension X; Exploring Tomorrow Radio Show; Flash Gordon; Imagine More Success Radio Show with Syndee Hendricks and Thomas Hydes; Jet Jungle Radio Show; Journey Into Space; Know the Name with Sharon Lynn Wyeth; Lux Radio Theatre - Classic Old Time Radio; Mission Evolution with Gwilda Wiyaka; Paranormal StakeOut with Larry Lawson; Ray Bradbury - Tales Of The Bizarre; Sci Fi Radio Show; Seek Reality with Roberta Grimes; Space Patrol; Stairway to Heaven with Gwilda Wiyaka; The 'X' Zone Radio Show with Rob McConnell; Two Good To Be True with Justina Marsh and Peter Marsh; and many other! That's The ‘X' Zone Broadcast Network Shows and Archives - https://www.spreaker.com/user/xzoneradiotv

Why Bible Study? How is a Bible Study Different from a Devotional? How can we hear from God in our daily lives?   This week, I introduce the Bible Study I wrote and how God birthed this project in my heart. My prayer is that it will help you grow in your own walk with the Lord.   Hey friends, welcome to the Hearing Jesus Podcast.   Do you sometimes doubt if you are truly hearing God's voice or if it's really your own? Do you wonder how you can know the difference?  Do you struggle to feel confident in your relationship with God and what He says in his word?  Do you sometimes feel stagnant or like you hit a wall in your spiritual life?   Hey, I'm your host, Rachael Groll: missionary, author, pastor, and life coach.  And I have been there.  I too was doubting God's voice in my own life.  I too felt insecure about the things I thought God might be calling me to do.  I wanted to make a difference in the world and be obedient to what God was calling me to do, but I wasn't quite sure how to figure out what exactly that was.  I kept telling myself that I was wasting time trying to figure it out or waiting for Him to show me.  Or that I wasn't qualified to do the things I thought He might be telling me to do.   The answer for me was found in the pages of the Bible, as I learned how to understand what it was actually saying.  If you are ready to grow in your faith and to step confidently into the calling God has for you, then join me as we dig deep into God's word so you can learn to live out your faith in your everyday life.   Friend, you are loved, you are cherished, and you are His.   The Hearing Jesus Podcast will encourage and equip you to step into the calling God has for your life, living out your faith in the everyday. Together we will break down walls that keep us from growing spiritually. We will dig deep into our Bibles to understand and connect the Scriptures to our lives. We will boldly obey what God calls us to do, walking through doors that only He can open.   Join me for your weekly dose of faith, honesty, and prayer.   Learn -> https://shehears.org Connect -> rachael@shehears.org Community->Christian Women's Daily Bible Study Group Instagram-> https://www.instagram.com/she_hears/ Missions Support-> https://www.cotni.org/campaigns/rachael-groll FREE 7-Day Devotional: Desires of the Heart -> https://shehears.org/free-7-day-devotional/     Want to go a little deeper?   Purchase the She Hears: Learning to Listen to Jesus Bible Study on my Etsy shop here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/SheHearsShop?ref=profile_header   Also available on Amazon or wherever books are sold.   In this six-week study from the Book of John, Rachael Groll takes you on an in-depth exploration into the lives of six women Jesus knew. Women often deal with feelings of insecurity and unworthiness, yet the lives of these women show that Jesus values us, wants a relationship with us, and can use us to further His kingdom. In her warm, conversational style, Rachael ties together her life experience, knowledge of the Scriptures, and her compassion for women to encourage us and enable us to become the women God has called us to be.   Need to chat one on one? Kate and Maggie Fox were infamous in 19th century America for their ability to speak for the dead through some strange knocking sounds - and they weren't the only women who were making a living from talking to the dead. Other women like Emma Harding and Victoria Woodhull used their abilities as spiritual mediums to raise awareness of the progressive issues of the time like abolition of slavery and equal rights for women. Were the women charlatans or true believers, or simply riding the wave of the latest craze?

Shira talks about burnout affecting not only health care professions, but also teachers, single parents, traders, managers, bankers and entrepreneurs. Knowing it as adrenal fatigue opens up a treasure chest of tools and tips. We finish with an excerpt from Diana Tokaji's book Six Women in a Cell, and Katherine May's book Wintering; a journey into the season of burnout. DHEA, produced by our ovaries and adrenals, is a hormone that improves stress recovery, energy, mood, sleep, immunity and libido. During perimenopause our ovaries stop producing most hormones and adrenals and pituitary take over this function. So what happens when our adrenals are fatigued? You guessed it... Trauma, small and big, also negatively affects our adrenals and therefore increases our likelyhood of burnout. Overcoming Burnout Tools and tips Get tests done- at a functional medical doctor see what causes imbalance, adrenal fatigue tests, microbiome and methylation labs Minimise stress- which areas causes stress- work, family, home, personal. Create a schedule to minimize stress and more rest. REST REST REST. Meditation, Sama-vritti; breathing in and out same ratio of 5 counts 2-5 mins a few times a day. Decrease Inflammation- curcuma, bitter and astringent foods bring down the acidity, caused by excess sweet, sour and salty foods. Leafy greens for HPA. Eat Protein rich foods- adrenals need protein to convert into hormones and healthy endocrine function, relieving anxiety, insomnia and mental fatigue. Healthy Fats- olive oil, coconut oil, ghee and avocados Supplements & Herbs- Zinc, vit D, C, chamomile, ashwagandha, radhiola, liqourice

Protesters and police clashed again last night in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, over the death of Daunte Wright.  It's been just over 100 days since Brexit began in earnest, and British exporters aren't happy with how things are going. Diana Tokaji Part 2 Self-Care during Acute Trauma   1:00 Wrote a book “Six Women in a Cell” of her experience with assault by police. It isn’t a yoga therapy how-to, tells stories of the womens’ experience. Reader and listener share the experience. Story of what it takes to survive. It’s for any survivor and those that work with survivors. 5:20 Diana’s assault occurred three years ago. This time frame has allowed her to start speaking publicly. This and working with clients with similar problems requires a lot of self-care, emotional rebalancing and release. 7:00 Self Care Tips: what restores each of us comes from what we love. Soon after the assault took up boxing – contact, rhythm – really helped. She dances, moves, shares. Recommends that yoga therapists learn re-evaluation counselling where the counsellor is trained to be present, a quality listener to another person. Yoga therapists should be available to each other using this technique. 10:50 Presence is being sware of what the body is asking or trying to do. Learning what it really takes to be present. It is the best gift you can give anybody. In a session, visiting different scenes of Diana’s assault, I knew nobody wanted to hear about the assault, or what I went through. When the therapists described the defeat she saw in me, the dam broke and I talked about it. The yoga therapists held the space while those scenes replayed. 16:03 Diana’s book Six Women in a Cell telling the story of her assault experience is written with only a few edits remaining. Then she will be looking for an agent and publisher. The performance based on the book is another avenue for the story. Perfomance was a carrot for Diana’s  GoFundMe site to fund writing the book. The GoFundMe has been successful in providing funds. (See resources for the finding the site if you would like to donate.) 21:30 The physical aspect in yoga therapy (e.g., mudras) are very helpful. Pull, press, push the hands and the being registers the courage needed in life. Creates a sense of tone; translates to the mental and emotional states. The physical practices are equally important. The Salem Witch Trials continues to captivate us more than three hundred years after the legendary colonial village was swept away by witchcraft hysteria. Over 82,000 tourists travel to Salem, Massachusetts annually, drawn by stories of fictional sorcery and the real-life prosecution of the accused. Too often, the names of the 255 individuals involved—including the nineteen hanged on Gallows Hill—are reduced to stock characters, the reality and intricacies of their lives buried beneath the dramatic details and their legacies smothered by Salem's modern day carnival atmosphere. In Six Women of Salem: The Untold Story of the Accused and Their Accusers in the Salem Witch Trials, historian and author Marilynne K. Roach chronicles the lives of six specific women involved in the witch hunt who represent the accusers, the accused, or both, and uses their unique stories to illuminate the larger crisis of the trials.Six Women of Salem works to reconstruct the events of the trials, bringing to life this representative group of women, and examines the entire experience of the Salem Witch Trials through the eyes of those who lived through the hysteria. Marilynne K. Roach delivers a historically intimate narrative that gives readers a front row seat to this desperate and dangerous time in history. Roach  works as both a historian and illustrator. Her illustrations, how-to articles, and travel pieces have been featured in the Boston Globe. She's lectured to groups ranging in age from kindergarteners to senior citizens, and is the author of the classic The Salem Witch Trials: A Day-by-Day Chronicle of a Community Under Siege. She is a lifelong resident of Watertown, Massachusetts.
