In this episode of 'Do I Like It', Prateek Lidhoo talks about the Kiran Rao directed 'Laapataa Ladies', starring Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, and Sparsh Shrivastava. Prateek dives deep into the screenplay of the film, and tries to break down what decisions led to this film working over other 'small-town' films, which don't generate as much excitement as their starting premise. From nuanced character development to a meticulous approach of setups and payoffs, 'Laapataa Ladies' is a masterclass in cinematic writing.
Is Biryani anti-Hindu? Should vegetarians be forced to eat chicken? Did Ram actually eat meat? I never thought a film would ever take me on that trail of thought. In this episode of ‘Do I Like It', let's talk about Nayanthara's Tamil film ‘Annapoorani' and the controversy that made Zee Studios and Netflix take the film down days after its online release. The film sparked controversy and faced strong criticism from right-wing groups and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), which argued that it offended the religious sensitivities of Hindus and promoted ‘love jihad'. Let us dig deep into some scenes from the film, and try to understand if they warranted any criticism in the first place.
Yes! It's that time of the year when I bombard the internet with my spiciest opinions, my hot takes, and some views that'll set the comments section on fire. Looking back at 2023, I had some vastly different takes when compared to what I saw on the internet. Takes where I was like, “Did I even watch the same film as everyone else?” So, let's go ahead and talk about them.

Would my review be different if I was not a man? Should artists always take a moralistic stance while creating complex characters or conflicts? Can you learn good things from a bad film? Am I a closet Sandeep Reddy Vanga stan? These are some questions that came to mind after watching Ranbir Kapoor and Rashmika Mandanna's Animal, directed, written, and edited by Sandeep Reddy Vanga. In this episode of Do I Like It, Prateek talks about what he liked, what he did not like, and why you should not like this revenge saga! Watch till the end.

Or do remakes just not work? Tune into this episode of Do I Like It to find out.
A few months ago I watched a film, that still hasn't left me. In this episode of Do I Like It, let's talk about ‘Dhuin', Anchal Mishra's short film. This Maithili film, streaming on MUBI, follows the journey of a theatre actor, Pankaj (played by Abhinav Jha), who treads on the blurred lines of enthusiasm and exhaustion. The film is set in a lockdown Darbhanga, where financial woes make the protagonist choose between his passion and duties. Even as heavy mist engulfs rural Bihar, the sensitive portrayal of Dhuin's characters cannot remain hidden. Listen till the end!
In this episode of Do I Like It, Prateek talks about Munawar Faruqui's debut hip-hop album 'Madari'. The album features a solid tracklist with beats by industry stalwarts like Sez on the Beat and Karan Kanchan. Or will it be just another cookie-cutter, pop-rap project? Listen till the end to find out.

In this episode of Do I Like It, I want to talk about a song that's close to my heart because of two reasons: 1: I love Kashmiri music, and 2: I love wedding music. And Kya Karie Korimol by Alif, Noor Mohammad, and Aashima Mahajan is the perfect blend of the two. The rendition of Alif's original song talks about a wedding, where all the father is worried about is whether there is enough food to feed everyone. On the other hand, the daughter's mind is racing about the changes that are about to come in her life. Tune in for my full review.
In this episode of Do I Like It, I talk about Yungsta's album, 'Meen'. It was executive produced by Sez on the Beat and released on his label 'The MVMNT'. With a star-studded feature list of Calm, Frappe Ash, Ikka, Raga, and many more, Meen marks Yungsta's entry into mainstream desi hip-hop. The album has a coherent soundscape and a consistent subject matter about an artist, a fish coming out of the proverbial water. Yungi takes us through his journey of introspection. While not all tracks were created equally on this album, there wasn't anything that I particularly didn't like. Tune in to full episode to find out my full review.
In this episode of Do I Like It, let us talk about Irrfan Khan. On 29 April 2020, Irrfan left us after a long battle with cancer. This episode aims to celebrate his legacy by discussing five of his best acting performances. But I won't be talking about obvious picks like The Namesake, The Lunchbox, Paan Singh Tomar, etc. I want to mention some hidden gems from his filmography which don't usually get talked about when we mention his acting but definitely deserve to be mentioned. Stay tuned and let us know your favourite performances by Irrfan.
In this episode of Do I Like It, I talk about Naezy's latest Eid offering, 'Apocalypse'. After struggling with his music and his faith for years, Naezy seems to have lost the Top 5 Desi Hip Hop artists' spot that he once held. Will this project help him retain his lost glory? Can Naezy keep up with DHH superstars like Divine and Emiway? And should the music of struggling artists be limited to beats and rhymes, tune in to find out!
On this episode of Do I Like It, we review the new Barbie trailer starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. While the trailer really entrenches into the history of Barbie, there are some major Easter eggs referencing ‘The Wizard of Oz', '2001: A Space Oddyssy', and more. Is that a hint as to the plot of the film? There's only one way to find out! While Greta Gerwig (or META Gerwig) does her magic, don't forget to tune into the full review to hear more!
On this episode of Do I Like It, we review Photo, directed by Utsav Gonwar, which was just premiered at the Bengaluru International Film Festival. This Kannada film is pathbreaking in terms of its cinematography; the director portrays his story in terms of political consciousness and not political correctness. The movie starts with the story of a young son, excited to visit his father in Bengaluru, but slowly morphs into the story of a father hoping to return to his village amidst the lockdown and their collective journey home. The narrative shift is smooth and does not cause any narrative jerks. Overall, photo is a beautiful amalgamation of several representations whether it be gender, class or societal.
In this episode of Do I Like It, we review Joyland - a film by Saim Sadiq- which has recently become a global symbol of Pakistani cinematography. While the movie pushes the boundaries by depicting a love story between a transgender woman and a cisgender man, it also shows the orthodox reality of the misogyny faced by women in general. Overall, Joyland is the most joyous cinematic experience of recent times and worthy of all the adulation it's received. Tune in for the full review!
In this episode of Do I Like It, I review Anubhav Sinha's latest - Bheed. Bheed not only packs a powerhouse of talented actors, but a story that directly reflects the reality of many. As always, Sinha takes up real life news incidents and fictionalises them to showcase the depth of the issue surrounding his movie. In this case, he does justice to the horrific reality of workers who were trying to migrate during the Covid-19 Pandemic. Although, I have some reservations about a few artistic decisions, overall, Bheed is definitely a must watch. Tune in for the full review.
In this episode of Do I Like It, we review Zwigato, and no, this is not a new food delivery app; instead a portrayal of the life of a gig worker directed by Nandita Das. Das does an excellent job by using the medium of a food delivery worker to display multiple disparities and prejudices in society regarding gender, caste, and income. At the same time, it's refreshing to see Kapil Sharma, a celebrated Indian comic, take on the serious role of a father struggling to make ends meet. Overall, the film moves you and reminds you of the trials and tribulations in the life of a delivery driver, who is more than often overlooked as a rightful member of our society. Tune in for the full review!
In this episode of Do I Like It, I discuss the impact of Aamir Khan on Bollywood, focusing on both the positive and negative aspects of his contributions. While his films like 3 Idiots and Taare Zameen Par received critical acclaim for addressing pressing social issues, his performances in movies like Ghajini and Mela were heavily criticized. Aamir's perfectionism and control over his films have been both a blessing and a curse, leading to delays in production and increased costs. While there are varying perspectives on whether he is the best or worst thing to happen to Bollywood, there is no denying his influence on Indian cinema. Tune in and listen till the end.
On this episode of Do I Like It, I review KR$NA's latest EP called Time Will Tell. The project is produced by Karachi-based producers Jokhay and Umair and features vocals from Talha Anjum and Talha Yunus, members of the Pakistani duo Young Stunners. The production is a good attempt at proving how well cross-country collaborations can do for the growth of art. Moreover, KR$NA delivers a well-packaged and neatly wrapped present, but perfection can also be a flaw; ultimately, how are we human without our humanity? To know more, tune in to the episode.
In this episode of Do I Like It, I talk about Emojis Vol. 1 by Fotty Seven. Fotty Seven, who is a Gurgaon based rapper, attempted to display the 5 stages of grief with his latest project, and partially succeeded. While the rapper's personal strength lies in his one-liners, is it enough to justify a full project? Can Fotty Seven shed the baggage of his previous bangers like 'Haan Bhai' and 'Galat Launde', and come up with a new sound? Will he be forever stuck in the 'Tere bhai ka naam kya hai' style of rap? Tune in to find out!
Holi has been a staple in Bollywood films. From Sholay to Darr, to Balam Pichkari in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, the festival of colors is used to talk about themes of love, celebration, and families coming together, keeping aside caste and class barriers. But if you go a layer deeper, questions of consent, tradition, and boundaries begin to arise. In this episode of Do I Like It, I talk about what this festival represents, and why the conversation around Holi needs a close inspection. Tune in!
I'm not crazy about Daniel Fernandes, but I have always appreciated him as a very sharp guy; a keen observer of society. I loved his podcast ‘You Started It' (not the online zoom call version, the OG, Cuckoo Club version). Daniel Fernandes dropped his special 'Alive & Vaccinated' on his YouTube channel, to be viewed for free on a ‘pay as you like' model. This special boasts of having 'smart jokes'. But do these smart jokes actually make you laugh? And why do I think Danny should leave standup comedy? Listen in to find out.
February is the month of love. And love in Indian cinema comes in various shades. Sometimes, it is a story of two destined lovers and their struggle against the realities of the world. Sometimes, it's a simple boy meets girl romantic comedy. And sometimes, it's a tragedy of two people whose love could never find fulfillment. Whatever form these films take, they help us understand love through different lenses and appreciate all the ways it manifests in our lives. So, in this episode of Do I Like It, I talk about some of my favorite rom-com, tragedies, political, feel-good, and bitter-sweet love stories.
Faraaz, directed by Mehta and written by Ritesh Shah, Kashyap Kapoor, and Raghav Raj Kakker, tells the story of the 2016 attack on the Holey Artisan Bakery in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Tune into this episode of Do I Like It, where Somya Lakhani tells us about the film, its politics, and how it treats the 'Good Muslim vs. Bad Muslim' debate.
Anubhav Singh Bassi has been a fan-favorite comedian, especially in school and college groups with his few YouTube videos. 'Bas Kar Bassi' is his much-anticipated full-length special, which has been in the works for some time. So the question is clear, was he able to hold his ground as a comedian with enough substance to entertain his audience for over an hour and a half? To find out, tune into this episode of Do I Like It?
While the world was watching Shah Rukh Khan's action-packed entertainer 'Pathaan', I took the theater not taken and watched Gandhi Godse - Ek Yudh. The film marks the comeback of filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi after almost a decade. He reimagines an India where Mahatma Gandhi survives the assassination attempt by Nathuram Godse, and they both meet each other in prison and debate everything from Ahimsa to The Gita, and a 'Hindu Rashtra'. In this episode of Do I Like It, I'll tell you my thoughts about the film.
From the directors of B, C-Movies from the 90s. Cinema Marte Dum Tak takes you behind the scenes at the making of their films, starring J Neelam, Dilip Gulati, Vinod Talwar, and Kishan Shah. This documentary series talks about the parallel line of cinema running beside mainstream Bollywood in the 80s and 90s. The popularity of these films in the Era had certain factors, one of them being sexual scenes that made these films popular. Tune in to Pratikshya's review to find out, if these films were masterful, or misogynistic.
I woke up to the news of Naatu Naatu winning a Golden Globe for best Original Song. As MM Keeravani, the music director of RRR walked up to pick his award, the auditorium erupted to the anthem. He has been working in films since 1990, but its a pity that he still remains a lesser-known figure in the Indian Music Industry. But actually, many of our favourite Hindi songs were composed by MM Keeravani. So, in this episode of Do I Like It, let's take a look at some tunes he's responsible for.
2022 is coming to an end, and everyone is sharing their top 10 lists with you. So I thought, why should I stop. This year I saw a bunch of films and shows, and in this episode of Do I Like It, I will tell you my picks for the 5 most underrated films (and shows) of the year. Now, before I begin, I have the following criteria for calling a film underrated: 1. I should have liked the film, duh! 2. If I ask a general film viewer, I can be sure that they wouldn't have watched the film/show. There needs to be an element of discovery in this list. So, super-well-known films like RRR, Kantara and Brahmāstra are disqualified. So are sleeper hits like Love Today and Darlings. Now, let's jump right in.
Anurag Kashyap and Amit Trivedi together? Now that's a duo that has given us some of the most unforgettable, revolutionary Bollywood music. In the first season of TVF's hit web show, the gang had to fight their inner demons, sacrifice family, relationships, etc. But now, they're in the ruthless world of startups. They have 24 employees to take care of. And this is what I feel is Season 2's biggest strength. Just like their app Pragati.AI, the writers pivoted at the right time to make a feel-good show more mature, realistic, and murky. In this episode of Do I Like It, Prateek Lidhoo reviews the second season of TVF Pitchers, starring Naveen Kasturia, Arunabh Kumar, and Abhay Mahajan.
Govinda Naam Mera, starring Vicky Kaushal, Kiara Advani and Bhumi Pednekar, is a typical Bollywood comedy. It has the tropes, the multiple plot lines, the comedy of errors and to top it all - a murder mystery. But does that mean it works? To find out, tune into this review by Pratikshya Mishra on Do I Like It?
We've seen him do comedy, we've seen him do social dramas, and some thrillers like Andhadhun too. But, how does he fare in An Action Hero as an action hero? Right from the first scene, Prince registers that it is not here to take any heavily opinionated stands, but rather just explore the absurdities and the silliness of a British-Indian couple's love story. In this episode of Do I Like It, Soundarya tells us if she felt the quirkiness of Sivakarthikeyan's Prince. Tune in!
Following massive demand, Rishab Shetty's Kantara is getting re-released pan-India in multiple languages. Here's my review of the film. As an atheist, I really like films about God and belief in the supernatural. I might not personally believe in it, but I really love the passion that some people have for their 'creator'. It's almost as if, for that small duration, I can sense this connection to a higher power. It's a magical feeling when done right. And boy did this film do it right. In this episode of Do I Like It, I tell you if I liked Rishab Shetty's Kantara. Spoiler Alert: I REALLY LOVED IT!
Recently, filmmaker Vetrimaaran questioned the depiction of Raja Raja Cholan as a "Hindu king." It soon lead to a controversy with some sections, especially politicians and public figures close to the Bharatiya Janata Party, calling the emperor a Hindu. Others, including actor and politician Kamal Haasan, actor-politician Karunas, filmmaker-turned-politician Seeman, and Congress MP S Jothimani, called him a Shaivite Dravidian ruler. In this episode of Do I Like It, Soundarya tells us what she thinks of the film ten days after its release. She also spoke to spoke to historians to set the record straight.

I watched Ratchan, the Tamil dubbed version of Nagarjuna's Telugu film The Ghost. In many ways, the film feels like a hybrid of two Tamil movies that released recently — Kamal Haasan's Vikram and Thalapathy Vijay's Beast. The Ghost borrows some good and many bad moments from the two films. But, in the end, Do I Like It? Tune in to find out.
Olivia Wilde's Don't Worry Darling had been creating buzz long before its promotions even begun. I'm a sucker for biopics. There's just something about watching an iconic real story come to life on screen. Also, I love stories of broken people. Naturally, Andrew Dominick's Blonde was on my watchlist for sure. From Ana de Armas' performance as Marilyn Monroe, the portrayal of Norma Jeane to the filmography, there is a lot to look at. So, Do I Like It? Tune in to find out!
Pushkar-Gayathri's Vikram Vedha is inspired by the Indian folklore Baital Pachisi.
