Ted Rubin is a social marketing strategist, international speaker, business advisor, and author. Known for his ability to make personal connections with people, Ted coined the term Return on Relationship™ (ROR) — proposing authentic relationships create value for both parties. His book, Return on Relationship, is based on this premise and presents practical, real-world ideas to help businesses maximize their potential using community-focused internet resources.  Ted is also a strategic advisor, investor, and board member for multiple entities in various industries, including Evergreen Trading, The Coupon Bureau, Impactica, Spaceback, and SheSpeaks Inc. In this episode… eCommerce brands are quickly losing customer interest due to impersonal marketing strategies. With numerous companies selling similar products and services, novel approaches are sparse, making it challenging to distinguish between competitors. Amidst competing brands, how can you personalize your marketing efforts to entice and retain customers?   Mass emails are a leading marketing strategy for many brands because of their convenience. Lack of personalization, however, does little to convince a consumer they are valued. Ted Rubin implores brand marketers to invest in strategies that cultivate a mutually beneficial relationship. Gathering intel on customer preferences and prioritizing their worth will garner appreciation and loyalty — improving a business' reputation. On this episode of the Up Arrow Podcast, William Harris welcomes Ted Rubin, strategic relationship advisor, to discuss how e-commerce enterprises can boost their brand and reputation by valuing return on relationships. Ted's marketing career provides perspective on maintaining a social media presence and strategies for personalizing the customer experience. He also urges e-commerce businesses to reevaluate the efficacy of their email marketing habits and shift to an omnipresent marketing mindset.

The most amazing connections come from some of the least expected opportunities we experience in life. Just like the unlikely heroes we read about in stories and mythology, the impossible becomes possible.  Such was the random comment I made one day to my friend Ted Rubin (Season 8, Episode 5), as he shared some of his musings about a ski vacation he was having with a friend he met by chance some thirty years earlier on Instagram. These two friends were clearly having a blast and I was enjoying the snippets of check-ins being posted by Ted about their ski trip together. One of these posts caught my attention, specifically when Ted recorded a video coming down into the lodge to find his friend. He said something like, "There's Ben, snuggled away in the corner, thinking and writing again."  There was something about the intensity of his friend sitting there in the corner in that video that really caught my attention. It was as if he spoke to me at that moment. So, of course, I asked what he was writing to which Ted replied, "Who knows but with Ben, it's sure to be interesting. You'd like Ben, he's a deep thinker." Ted was right. I not only like Ben Dennis, but I have become fascinated with how this man thinks, tells a story and looks at the world and his place in it. He has a calming, almost meditative spirit about him that washes over you. I found myself wishing our conversation could go on forever because he just has a way that inspires me. I know if you listen to this whole podcast, he will do the same for you as well. A little more about Ben: Ben is a mythologist and writer cultivating an ongoing life-long love of story, myth, and psychology. He is passionately involved in ritual, rites of passage, psychodrama, and storytelling. His mythic interests include Greek mythology, Native American story, European Fairy tales, and Hindu epic literature. He has a wide variety of experience having worked in diverse fields such as commercial fishing, construction, and Investment Banking, and a veteran of the U. S. Air Force. Ben is a retired 28-year veteran Fire Fighter in Seattle where he served as a member of the Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) team. Ben has been adjunct faculty at Antioch University Seattle and holds his PhD in Mythological Studies with an Emphasis in Depth Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute. Ben has participated in and led a variety of workshops and conferences. He has assisted and taught at the Minnesota Men's Conference as a featured Storyteller since 2013. He has also been a featured storyteller and teacher with Veteran's groups dedicated to addressing “the emotional, moral, and spiritual wounds of veterans, their families and communities.” Over the past 20-years Ben has facilitated rites of passage events for young men, mentored in the workplace and in his community, and offers storytelling and drum making classes. “With a life-long fascination in literature, myth, and story I recognize that teaching is a vital part of individual growth, community support, resiliency, and understanding the community we live in. I believe it is crucial to engage the imagination in startling and fresh ways. We each have survived and thrived countless generations through oral tradition, self-reliance, dedication to community, and the archetypal desire to share what we have learned with future generations. My intention is to learn and teach in whatever way I am able.”

We discuss how today's buyers' habits are evolving and the brands that are evolving with them are the ones developing relationships and removing friction from their transactions.  This trend is just as important to B2B Sales as it is to retail brand marketing.  Brands that empower their employees to build their own brands through social media create ambassadors and extend their reach and ability to build relationships with their customers.  Each day customers and employees leave brands and employers who take them for granted and still people question the ROI of culture.     For more content like this, Join the National Association of Sales Professionals for Free Today! The Metaverse has been on the top of minds and conversations of most people in the marketing space in the last few months. Ever since Mark Zuckerberg and Meta, ne' Facebook, went all-in on VR to inflate stock prices because they had Oculus headsets to sell now, this seemingly new virtual world as a consumer and business reality has produced an explosion. Unfortunately, the explosion as been one of consultants and experts and specialty agencies telling brands and influencers that if they're not in the Metaverse, they're yesterday's news.  Well, slow your roll there, though leader wannabes. The Metaverse is neat, but it's not for everybody or every brand. And there's still a lot of gap closing that needs to happen between consumer engagement there and brands solving the problem of how to drive that engagement.  Last month I dedicated most of my monthly email newsletter to sharing my honest thoughts on the Metaverse and how brands, consumers and influencers can use it. The piece was so well received one of my fellow thinkers in the space, Ted Rubin, used my rant as his email newsletter last week. It was the first newsletter in a long time that earned more than a couple of replies from subscribers, too. More than a dozen people reached out to say how excited they were to read it and how refreshing it was to have a realistic perspective on this new world to chew on.  Today on Winfluence, I'm going to share much of that piece with you. I've put it through the filter of it being used as a podcast script and tried to underline the influencer marketing implications a bit, so it's a little different than the original.   But I'm going to give you my honest opinion of the Metaverse and how we can and should prioritize its use in today's commentary. Simplify Your Sales meetings. Lisa Thal is an Author, Speaker, and Business Coach. She wrote the book "Three Word Meetings."  Lisa coaches leaders on simplifying sales and business meetings with fun and interesting 3-word  topics to get your sales team motivated and inspired.  She has over 34 years of marketing, sales, and leadership experience.   Episode 120, The story behind walking 10,000 steps a day and how you can apply the same principal to your business.   I was at work and saw a co-worker walking by my office. I said hello, how are you? She replied, getting my 10,000 steps in today. Then the next day, I played golf and asked Anne whom I playing with you riding or walking? Anne said, let's walk the course; I need to get my 10,000 steps in today.    Well, my curiosity got the best of me, and I had to find out the story or who invented the term 10,000 steps? I am guessing many of you listening can relate to finding a way to hit that magical number. Or those over-achievers are listening who find a way to exceed 10,000 steps!    The premise behind walking 10,000 steps is to focus on a goal to achieve each day.   So who invented the term 10,000 steps?   The 10,000 steps a day target seems to have come about from a trade name pedometer sold in 1965 by Yamasa Clock in Japan. The device was called "Manpo-key," which translates to "10,000 steps meter".    It was a marketing tool for the device; you got to love great marketing! Fifty-six years later, it appears to become a way of life for many. It's even included in daily activity targets by popular smartwatches, like Fitbit, Garmin, or Apple watches.   Research has since investigated the 10,000 steps a day target. The fact that study has shown this step target improves heart health, mental health, and even lowers diabetes risk, may, to some extent, explain why we have stuck with this arbitrary number.   But while some research has shown health benefits at 10,000 steps, research from Harvard Medical School has shown that, on average, approximately 4,400 steps a day is enough to lower the risk of death and improve your overall health.    So what do the 10,000 steps have to do with your business? It sets a daily goal for you.    What steps and how many do you need to take to ensure you have a productive day—a day that you are mentally engaged and feel good about your efforts. Build momentum and consistency for your business.   I was thinking about how we could apply the same principal to our business. Most people don't walk the 10,000 steps at one time. They break it up throughout the entire day. What if you did the same. Break your day into four focuses: 8am-10am;     10 am-Noon: 2pm-4pm and 4pm-5pm.   Here are a few steps you can take to stay focused on each day!   Beginning of your day. Set Priorities for your day! To some people, just showing up every day is a success! It's crucial that you take a few minutes to establish the main priorities in your day.    But it is vital that you set your expectations for yourself.   Here are some good questions to ask yourself when setting your priorities:   *What would I need to accomplish today to make it a great day? Set an appointment with a new client? Convert a pending account? Renew a contract from a current client?   *How can I maximize my time today to have a productive day? Limit my distractions so I can focus on prospecting and growing my current accounts?   Taking a few minutes to clarify your priorities will significantly help you plan a prosperous day because you will know exactly where you should spend your time.   Do it every day! Drink Coffee - yes- but also Prospecting! If you want to succeed in business or sales, you'll need to get good at prospecting and lead generation. Unless people are calling you, it's our job to create those opportunities. Make sure you schedule your prospecting time at a time during the day when you are most productive. Create focused time to do this and block out the distractions. Review at the end of your day how many prospects you connected.    Keep track of your day. A successful day starts with knowing where your time and energy are going.  Do you know where your time goes every day? Are you aware of how you're spending your time? Could you be busy deleting emails, getting lost on social channels like Facebook and Tik Tok? Are the activities your doing walking you closer to a conversion? By tracking your day, you will realize which activities are helping you be more productive throughout the day.   Separate your sales calls from prospecting time There is a difference! It is essential to spend time doing both. I recommend looking at your calendar each day. Do you have prospecting time scheduled, as I shared earlier? How many sales calls have you set for the day? Making sure you spend part of your day selling or providing solutions to your client's issues.       Follow up with a couple of people every day. Return on Relationship like my friend Ted Rubin says. Some of the most successful people always maintain relationships and cultivate new ones with potential clients and past clients.   How do you end your day? One of the things that successful people have in common is how they end the day. Celebrate the wins and make adjustments to your next day!   Start each day by understanding your goals, and have a clear plan for how you'll accomplish them. Our happiness and fulfillment are all about stepping toward progress every day!   If you think someone could benefit from this episode, share it, rate it, or subscribe for Free at Itunes or Spotify, so you don't miss out on the next three-word podcast.   Learn more about how to Simply Your sales meetings using 3-word topics at http://www.threewordmeetings.com .

Lisa Thal is an Author, Speaker, and Business Coach.  Simplify Your Sales meetings. She wrote the book "Three Word Meetings."  Lisa coaches leaders on simplifying sales and business meetings with fun and interesting 3-word  topics to get your sales team motivated and inspired.  She has over 34 years of marketing, sales, and leadership experience.   In episode 108 - Learn Seven tips to Spark Your Sales!   How's your year going? If you're on track or crushing your budgets and quotas, Congratulations. If your falling short, then you may find this podcast helpful. You may be looking for something to help Spark your Sales.    Here are seven tips you can do to Spark your sales.    Add More Value. Think about the products and services you buy? I have a feeling that it's not always about price. Instead, the product/service that adds more value to your life. Most clients buy from those that add or show value in working with them. Your clients are no different.   Your clients see value in many different ways. A product might save them time, create more revenue, improve their operation, build employee morale and engagement. But ultimately, customers will only purchase a product that they think will benefit them. In the end, the person that earns the business does these three words: Adds More Value! What solutions can you provide to your prospect or client?   A great question to ask to add value would be the following. "Our research has shown that the industry/market has been going in an upward/downward direction over the past days/weeks/months." Again, this shows you've done your homework and share something of real value with your client.   Learn to Listen. More than two-thirds of clients agree: listening to their needs is essential to create a positive sales experience. So all you have to do is ask better questions and listen. Learn about your prospect's business. Spark their interest by asking your client about their industry, trends, what they're doing to stay ahead, and even why they got into that industry. If you show interest in your prospect's business, they'll feel influential and respected. You will earn their trust. Everyone likes to talk about themselves; all you have to do is ask them.   Keep Building Trust. Think about this static, only 3% of buyers trust sales reps. Talk about no Spark! This trust deficit is one of the biggest problems facing salespeople. No matter how well you explain the value of your product or recommend a specific solution if your prospects don't believe you… you're facing an uphill battle.   But fortunately, there is a way to develop that trust by consistently demonstrating expertise. Sharing that knowledge with your prospects shows that you understand the industry and empathize with their challenges.   A great question to build trust would be the following. "My experience in this field shows that the market is improving/getting better/more profitable, so my recommendation is to invest in product x." You will earn the trusted advisor position and helps the prospect trust your opinions and create more opportunities for themselves.   Be A Resource. Stay focused on how you can help your client. Stay focused on understanding what your customer needs and provide them with solutions. Share industry trends and how to help improve their sales and operation. Or share the following statement: "Like most of our clients, no doubt you must be experiencing an upturn/downturn/increase/decrease in xxx part of your business." Using the phrase 'Like most of our clients' says that you will share some valuable market information, pique their interest in hearing more.   Persistence pays off. I read an article from Hubspot that shared some great stats on how staying persistent can pay off to you.     It takes an average of 18 calls actually to connect with a buyer. Only 24% of sales emails are opened, which means 76% don't get opened. I would recommend calling and starting a conversation. 80% of sales require five follow-up calls. 44% of salespeople give up after one follow-up call.   Selling is all about relationships. How do you keep the spark alive? Ted Rubin – who wrote the book Return on Relationship, understands this principle. The word "Relate" is in the word Relationship. The more relatable you are to your clients, the better opportunity you have to work with them. When you spend your time having conversations with your clients about how you can help them, you will gain their trust and have a better chance of being referred to other businesses.    Share Success Stories Clients want to work with companies that have a proven track record. The best way to do this is to share similar companies' stories to highlight the success that they could have with your product- since they'll want the same success. If you have a past success that's in the same industry, mention that to them. They'll be more interested because a competitor has had success with your product.    A great statement story to share could be the following. "The key influencers in our industry see an upturn/downturn in the near future, so my suggestion would be that fill in the blank."   To spark your sales, you need to spark a conversation! Become that trusted advisor by listening, more value, become a resource, become more relatable, and keep sharing your successes!   Happy 4th of July and to a road of Financial Freedom!     If you think someone could benefit from this episode, share it, rate it, or subscribe for Free at Itunes or Spotify, so you don't miss out on the next three-word podcast.   Learn more about how to Simply Your sales meetings using 3-word topics at http://www.threewordmeetings.com .

When deciding on how to spend marketing dollars, what is more important: return on investment or return on relationship? According to social media guru, Ted Rubin, building relationships can do more for your business than just spending money on ads or social media marketing or email marketing. In this week's episode, Ted shares how having the "marketing first, sales second" mentality led him to build an audience for a little know cosmetic company called "elf". Using social media, customers could share what they liked about the product, thereby helping to grow the business. By featuring user generated videos, Ted created a community for the company and extended the reach of "elf"s website. Referrals were growing and so were sales. Even the guys concerned about the bottomline wanted to know more about this concept of "Return on Relationship". When Ted left the company just two and a half years later, ‘elf’s revenue had grown by a factor of 10!Ted is a big advocate of blogging, but he urges listeners to get their own turf. Posting on social media is great, but you want to have your own space. Ted shares his own reluctance to start blogging, and how embracing it can help you build your relationships while protecting your brand."It's not just about ROI. Of course, it isn't the end game. But right now, as we're building community, as we're building relationships, as we're building an audience, it's about return on relationship." ~ Ted Rubinhttps://tedrubin.comJoin our Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/usabizparty

Welcome to Episode 19 of The Art of Humanity, where we explore creativity + consciousness to allow you and your business to evolve. In Episode 19, Jessica Ann talks with Ted Rubin. {Like what you hear? Leave a review on iTunes!} Many people in the social media world know Ted for his enthusiastic, energetic and undeniably personal connection to people. Ted is the most followed CMO on Twitter, according to Social Media Marketing Magazine; one of the most interesting CMOs on Twitter, according to Say Media, #13 on Forbes Top 50 Social Media Power Influencers, and number #2 on the Leadtail list of Top 25 People Most Mentioned by digital marketers. ROR is the basis of his philosophy...it's all about relationships! His book, Return on Relationship, was released in 2013, and How to Look People in the Eye Digitally in 2015.  In this interview, Jessica Ann and Ted Rubin talk about:  His background with Seth Godin, starting back in 1997 (He sent Seth Godin a resume!) And the critical error that he made at the beginning of his career.  His work with E.L.F. cosmetics in 2008 at the early stage of social and how he built a brand using ingenuity without a marketing budget. (6:00) I speak my mind. I say what I think. I tell people that they have to get back to something that is near and dear to your heart: their humanity. It's about building relationships and being good to people. It's about how connecting with people in a real way will benefit your business.  (9:15) I got to listen and learn from Seth Godin. A lot of what I got from Return on Relationship came from Seth's Permission Marketing...about bypassing the agencies whenever you can and talking directly to the people you want to do business with.  Agencies provide a great function but Seth's point was: instead (10:45) A network gives you reach but communities give you power...Networks allow you to connect with various people but communities care.  (11:33) This evolution to me has been like a God-send. Not only am I a community builder but now I have all of these platforms to build communities that enable and empower me. But I also love to interact and meet with people. I'm obsessed with interacting with people. If you're going to make responsive part of your personal brand, be prepared for when your following grows and you have to be responsive for what you care about. And for me, the beauty or the difficulty of it is not something I built into my brand...it's a part of who I am.  (13:00) His definition of community in today's digital age.  (17:46) It's not about the platform it's about the people.  (22:00) This is how you separate yourself, and that you do care about humanity. When you pass people in the street, smile at them! A brand is what a business or a person does...a reputation is what people remember and share.  It's less of a problem than an opportunity. If you're with someone, put the phone down and look at someone. This isn't so much about humanity (although that has a lot to do with it). It's about showing people how important they are to you.  (26:30) He tells a true story that not a lot of people know.  You will feel better if you treat people better. You will feel better if you default to happy. You will feel better if you stop before you go off on someone. Take a breath and smile :)  (32:18) I'm not a big persona guy. And what I've learned is that it's very hard to maintain a persona. In other words, if I didn't really believe in what I do, it would be hard to keep it up. It would be hard to fight the naysayers.  (33:30) The hilarious study that was done on Millennials about the reason that the consumption of cereal is going down is because Millennials are too lazy to clean the dishes from eating cereal. Here is the study in The Washington Post. Like what you hear? Leave a review in iTunes!
