Live from the Lore Bookshop at Shoptalk Spring, Phillip and Brian sit down with friends of the podcast and creative heavyweights Nick Susi and Mai Nguyen of dotdotdash to unpack their latest work with Nike—the groundbreaking AIR Imagination project. Nick and Mai pull back the curtain on what it takes to build immersive, AI-powered brand experiences that actually feel like the brand—and why surprise and delight matter more than ever in a world obsessed with optimization. Plus, hear how they're redefining user experience through experiments like Chromaverse and their take on AI as a “serendipity engine.”This Is What AI Should Feel Like (Chicken Shoes)Key takeaways:Nike's AIR Imagination is a Brand Milestone: AIR Imagination isn't just a product—it's a community design platform that invites fans to co-create with Nike DNA. Powered by AI, it lowers the barrier to creativity while still preserving the integrity of the brand.AI-Driven Remixing Is Reshaping Brand Strategy: This project flips the traditional brand-to-consumer model on its head. Now, it's consumer-to-consumer remixing, with Nike acting as the shared language. It's not just collaboration—it's cultural co-creation at scale.Dot Dot Dash Built AI That Feels Like Nike: Behind the scenes, Dot Dot Dash developed prompt-enhancing tech to ensure every user-generated design still looks and feels like a Nike product—proof that AI doesn't have to compromise brand authenticity.AI as a “Serendipity Engine” Is the Future of Commerce: Instead of treating AI like a tool for hyper-optimization, Dot Dot Dash sees its true power in enabling surprise, delight, and discovery. That ethos runs through everything from Nike to their own experimental tools like Chromaverse.Brands Need to Design with Culture, Not Just for It: As Nick's essay “Culture as a Client” explores, successful brands don't just extract from culture—they build multidirectional ecosystems that create mutual value. Nike's project is a masterclass in getting that balance right.“AIR Imagination is Nike saying, ‘Here's the vault. Remix what we've done—and what each other has done.'” – Nick Susi“Even with all that detail, it still came out a Nike shoe. That's the connection—that's the relationship.” – Mai Nguyen“What AI is really good at is chance, randomness, serendipity... That's what creates emotional experience.” – Nick Susi“We're not invalids. Don't spoon-feed us everything. Help me—but don't take it all away.” – Mai Nguyen“Chat-based ecommerce UIs? Frustrating. Instead, look to gaming or luxury retail for better design references.” – Nick SusiAssociated Links:Order LORE by Future CommerceCheck out Future Commerce on YouTubeCheck out Future Commerce+ for exclusive content and save on merch and printSubscribe to Insiders and The Senses to read more about what we are witnessing in the commerce worldListen to our other episodes of Future CommerceHave any questions or comments about the show? On January 7th, 1904 the Marconi Company sought to establish a universal distress call; proposing, ‘CQD' for emergencies.  Despite its adoption in Britain, other nations had varied distress signals, leading to a lack of international consensus. The second International Radio Telegraphic Conference in Berlin in 1906 came up with ‘SOS' instead. The United States weren't keen on adopting the new standard… until the sinking of the Titanic in 1912 highlighted the need to fall into line. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain what ‘WC' meant; recall the eye-catching way Marconi first demonstrated transatlantic radio waves; and explain how, eventually, Morse Code itself was retired as a method of marine communication by the end of the 20th Century…  This episode first premiered in 2023, for members of

Ride the Painted Pod, Let the Spinning Wheel Cast Much like a child, a podcast has many parents. That is to say, many individuals who act like parents, or that by a version, the podcast is their baby. This week's guest is one of those individuals. Certainly one of PYAG's parents is The Frotcast, and Joining Matt and Vince to break down The Sopranos Season 6b, episode 2, “Stage 5,” is The Frotcast's largest daddy, Brendan. If this were an episode of Friends, it would be called, “The One with Chrissy's Movie Premiere.” Cleaver, the film with many parents, is finally ready for public consumption, and while the graphic violence might strike some as unsettling, it's the possible inspiration for the film's overbearing, selfish, mob boss antagonist that was Tony feeling uncomfortable. As he tells Dr. Melfi, he knows too much about the subconscious now to believe that Chrissy still respects him after seeing Stephen Baldwin's portrayal of him. The episode also features the most British song yet. Stick around to the end to hear it. Leave your review of Cleaver in a five-star review of PYAG on Apple Podcasts. I met Mick Batyske years ago in Barcelona, and I was blown away by his incredible musical talent and entrepreneurial spirit. This guy has DJ'd for some of the biggest names: Cartier, Complex, GQ, Instagram, Jay-Z, LeBron James, Michelle Obama, Miguel, Prince, Spotify, Vanity Fair, and Will Smith. Not only is he one of the most requested DJs, but he is also an investor, speaker, podcaster, and devoted father. But Mick's journey didn't start with hot nightclubs and celebrity schmoozing. "I got my start deejaying in a dorm room in college. I walked in there with two crates of records, two turntables, and a mixer that barely worked and became a DJ. It was my first exercise in rebranding because I was an overweight, hairline-receding nerd in high school. A fat drummer and a marching band kid. Two months later, I was like the coolest student in the dorm." Over time Mick realized he could connect with people he would never usually get the chance to meet. He got the opportunity to build connections with influential people through his music. "I realized I'd much rather be in rooms of people that we can add mutual value outside of the DJ booth versus just, like pretty people drunk at a club." The event and DJ industry got annihilated during the pandemic, so he began to evaluate how to pivot his attention and start to grow different revenue streams. Mick started angel investing and advising startups through his company, The Xavier Co. Mick invests in, and advises a plethora of start-ups including Anchor, BPM Supreme, and Buzzer. Connect with Mick at mick.co or check out his music on SoundCloud. _______ Mick's BIO DJ, speaker, investor and advisor Mick Batyske (p/k/a MICK) has his feet planted at the intersection of culture and entrepreneurship. Inc Magazine referred to MICK as a “combination of Gary Vee and Questlove.” Vogue says he "keeps the dancefloor going all night." Complex has called MICK "the most entrepreneurial deejay." But MICK refers to himself as the father of the coolest 6-year-old in the world: Myles. DJ clients have included Andreessen Horowitz, Cartier, GQ, Instagram, LeBron, Michelle Obama, NBC, Prince, Twitter, Vanity Fair, and Will Smith. His speaking reel includes Alibaba, Cannes Lions, MasterCard and Stanford. MICK's investment portfolio includes Anchor, Backdrop, Buzzer, Dot Dot Dash, and Winc. Via this new venture, The Xavier Co, he is currently advising a plethora of start-ups including Game On and Polinate. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Welcome to episode 99 of The Podunk Polymath Podcast. This week I speak to Ashley Hall about her experience as a social worker, as well as the different types and challenges a member of the profession faces. We then talk about autism. We talk about what autism is; symptoms; causes; as well as controversies and misconceptions surrounding this condition. We also talk about Ashley's personal experiences with her autism; how it affects her life; and the unique challenges autism present. I learned quite a bit, and this episode runs longer than usual because this is a subject I'm really fascinated with. A note about the audio : I forgot to change the setting on the app I use to record these conversations, and thus once again I have 'Barry White Voice'. There were also some connection problems, but I think I managed to edit most of those issues out. It's still a great interview, I think, and I hope you agree. Welcome to another exciting of The Triple Po! First we briefly discuss my vasectomy, both my experience and the aftermath. Let me tell you, this makes for fascinating listening! We talk briefly also about Trump's dumbassery regarding the raid that killed al-Baghdadi, the leader of ISIS, and how it succeeded not BECAUSE of him, but IN SPITE of him, as well as his narcissistic and overblown announcement when it occurred, including classified information that will probably harm our and our allies efforts to capitalize on this killing. And of course we talk about the glorious booing that rained down upon him at Game 5 of the World Series in Washington, DC. His reaction going from a smile to a crestfallen look, on the verge of crying, is a think of pure beauty. Most of our episode though (and probably more oxygen than these douchebags deserve) are those assmonkeys over at Freethought Prophet, mostly regarding their Silverman worship and seeming inability to recognize that platforming that asshole is only further legitimizing him, thus further telegraphing to women that they shouldn't be expected to feel safe regarding powerful White dudes in the 'atheist movement'. Of course, this caused my friend Zach, who is pretty levelheaded, to light into them as only he can, before finally giving up because he has better things to do. Well we don't! And we're petty! This week I have on Rose Marie Pink, President and Executive Director of Launch Pad Nashville, "a volunteer-based initiative striving to provide street free sleep to youth between the ages of 18-24 with a focus on being affirming and welcoming to LGBTQ youth." We talk about the organization's genesis, mission, challenges, and goals. Launch Pad also happens to be the organization I chose for my Facebook Birthday Fundraiser this year. I am really proud to have supported them. They need volunteers, so consider signing up. Of course, they always need money as well, so feel free to donate! I hope y'all learn something from this, because I think it's a great organization. Music by Dot Dot Dash, cdbaby.com/cd/dotdotdash

I am going to issue a content warning for this episode for talking about PTSD, suicide, and some combat violence.  This week I speak to Hyrum and Nate about some of their experiences with combat as well as PTSD, both combat and non-combat related, as well as other conditions that arose from traumatic brain injury. They also talk about the difficulty of re-adjusting to civilian life after combat, as well as the need to find purpose in order to stave off depression, even up to suicidal ideation. They also talk about ways to cope with these issues, though, and how anyone can learn to adjust with therapy, purpose, and a good support system. Finally, they emphasize that PTSD is a condition that can occur from any traumatic situation, not just combat. Thus the argument that somehow people who were never in combat can't experience PTSD is absolutely false, and it is harmful to those who suffer from this condition. Everyone's experiences and illnesses are valid, regardless of the circumstances. I really want to thank Hyrum and Nate for coming on, as I know it wasn't easy to recall these painful experiences. I have great admiration for these men, and I hope their willingness to come forward and talk will give others the courage to do the same. Music by Dot Dot Dash, cdbaby.com/cd/dotdotdash

This week I have on Nathan Dickey for one purpose : To tell me what I should care about philosophy. But first, we discussed the recent death of John McCain and our feelings on it. But then the main topic of philosophy was discussed. We discussed what philosophy is; a brief of history of how it evolved in its current understanding; how there are any good philosophy 'communicators' out there of any great stature to explain things to the layman; and some sources that are trying to do just that, via podcasts and YouTube. It's a fascinating discussion. I don't if he know convinced me or not, but he has definitely given me some things to think about. Perhaps, just perhaps, I will one day give a fuck about philosophy! I flew solo this week as I didn't have a guest. The biggest thing that happened was that I got SIX new patrons! I have to say that I'm truly humbled. They are Nathan Dickey, host of A Leap of Doubt Podcast and Trolling with Logic; my good friend Jeanne Ikerd; long-time listener and quizmaster extraordinaire Susan Turpin; blogger and faithful listener Kim Perkins; one-time guest and my brother from another mother Kevin Watson; and my first $10 patron, Rob Schreck! That means he gets a t-shirt! I thank y'all so much for your support. It really means a lot. The show is me talking about the immigration fiasco occurring on the border, and the evil influence of the Trump administration as well as that modern-day Gestapo ICE. I lay out the whole situation as well as the back story behind it. I then offer up my predictions as to what will happen. Let's just say the picture ain't rosy. I also talk about some stories where Trump lackeys get some karma dished in their direction, which is always welcome news to my mind. I also discovered a new show, Kevin and Benedict, a show of which I recently became a patron. They do two shows, the main one is This Week In News, and then there is This Week In History. They are both great shows, and I encourage you to check them out. Enjoy! Music by Dot Dot Dash, cdbaby.com/cd/dotdotdash

After a three-month hiatus, The Triple Po had returned! I had to take a step back and take care of my mental health, but I'm raring to go again! The format of the show is different now as well. I am going to be doing the show live from the YouTube channel and then releasing the audio as the regular podcast. The schedule is also changing to twice a month. The show will be live on Saturdays at 7 PM Central, unless it conflicts with Atheists at the Pub in which case it will be Friday at 7 PM Central. The podcast will be released by Monday morning after the live show. I talked a bit about the hiatus as well as a friend's experience with sexual assault as well as Pride Month. After some technical difficulties (which is par for the course with these two!), I talked to Amy and Nadya from the Ginger Snaps. We talk about those same issues, but also there's also a lot of great conversation with friends. I want to thank y'all who have stuck around with me through the hiatus as well as the 4 patrons that stayed on. That means a lot, and I appreciate the support. I hope y'all will like the new format. Welcome back to The Podunk Polymath Podcast! This week on the pre-ramble I talk about two upcoming conferences I am attending : NaNoCon and Secular Social Justice. NaNoCon is March 17th in Nashville at Glencliff High School. Tickets are $15 until March 1st and $20 thereafter. I will be on the podcasters panel again this year, so that's even more of an incentive to attend. Secular Social Justice is in Washington, DC at the All Souls Unitarian Church. The cost of that one is $25. I hope to see y'all at one or both conferences! On the palaver I speak with Ingrid from Chicago, a trans woman who has been unhoused in the past and may soon be again. We talk about how she became unhoused, her experiences, her struggles, and her hopes. She is looking at the possibility of being unhoused again in the near future, but I hope things will change and that this will not happen. It is a difficult but important discussion, mostly because it seems that being unhoused is an issue that too many people try ignore, I think mainly because we are told that being unhoused is shameful but also people are afraid that they may be in that situation one day. All in all, things are looking pretty bad for Our Orange Overlord, though I daresay Congressional Republicans will prevent any substantive charges from touching Trump. On the palaver this week, I talk to one of the co-hosts of Brainstorm Podcast, Angela Reddekopp. We have a frank and in-depth discussion about the origins of the #metoo movement, its effects both positive and negative, the backlash, and what we can do as individuals to keep the conversation going, most especially having men talking and doing something to monitor and modify their behavior as well as other men. Welcome to another episode of The Podunk Polymath Podcast. This week is a somber episode, as I discuss the recent death of my grandmother. I briefly recount my memories with her, as well as what the funeral was like. It was a very sad affair, but I think most took some comfort because she had a long, rich life and she was no longer suffering. On the palaver I talk to my friend Brynda Quinn, a clinical psychologist, about grieving as an atheist. She offers special insight because her husband died, and thus is more familiar with the process. We also talk about specific steps we can take to help make the grieving process easier. We also discuss specifically my grandmother and what I can do to deal with her death. The coping techniques we discuss can apply to all those dealing with grief, not just atheists. I hope perhaps that this episode can serve to help people with their own grief, as well as prepare those who have not experienced this sort of situation as of yet for how to deal with grief in the future.
