Relevant Radio is all about "bringing Christ to the world through the media," and that includes reaching those in prison. The Big News? Relevant Radio has teamed up with Edovo, a nonprofit that provides digital education tools in prisons, to make Catholic content accessible to over 1,100 correctional facilities across the U.S. Here’s how it works: Inmates can access Relevant Radio’s content: like Fr. Rocky’s Eucharistic Encounters and The Saints Podcast, right on secure tablets provided through Edovo. In just one month, 25,000 sessions of Relevant Radio content were accessed by inmates. Though federal prisons aren’t on board yet, there’s hope this outreach will expand even further. Why does this matter? Because everyone deserves a shot at grace, even those who’ve lost their freedom. Patrick reminds us of Matthew 25: “I was in prison, and you visited me.” Prison can be a dark, isolating place, and yet, God’s light can still break through the bars. Patrick shares a heart-touching letter from Michael, an inmate in New Jersey, who listens to Relevant Radio daily. Michael prays the Chaplet of Divine Mercy with Drew Mariani and joins in the Family Rosary Across America every evening. He even sent a handmade Christmas card to the team (with some seriously impressive cursive handwriting; Patrick was impressed!). Michael’s words say it all: “Relevant Radio has changed my life.” He and many others are finding community, hope, and a deeper relationship with Christ... right from their cells. So, next time you tune into Relevant Radio, say a prayer for those listening in the loneliest of places. Because God’s mercy knows no walls.

Drew Mariani explores topic many of us can't resist—sugar. Do you have a sweet tooth? Drew does too! He says that fasting has helped, though. Now, even dark chocolate tastes sweet to him! Is Sugar Really That Bad? Drew brings on Dr. Sean O'Mara, an expert in health and wellness, to clear up the confusion. Be sure to check out the full hour! Dr. O'Mara explains that while we have different types of sugars—like sucrose, glucose, and fructose—they're all processed differently in our bodies. The big takeaway? Sugar itself isn't the enemy. It becomes a problem for people with a compromised microbiome, often due to being overweight or having a sluggish metabolism. Dr. O'Mara's advice for those folks: "Run from sugar!" Why Some People Stay Slim Notice that those skinny pasta-loving Italians don't seem to struggle with the same issues? The secret? A healthier microbiome and a lifestyle filled with walking and fresh, less-processed foods. It's different in Rome! Healthier Eating Habits Dr. O'Mara suggests avoiding not just sugar but also processed carbs. Instead, he recommends focusing on healthy fats and proteins. He also points out that most modern fruits have been modified to be sweeter, which isn't ideal for our health. His tip? Go for wild fruits that are less sweet and more nutritious. Innovations in Sugar Consumption There's also some fascinating research out there. Dr. O'Mara mentions Harvard's work with nanotechnology to encase sugar molecules, potentially turning them into fiber in the gut. This could be a real game-changer for those struggling with sugar's negative effects. Dr. O'Mara's Personal Journey Dr. O'Mara admits that he used to struggle with being overweight. It wasn't the end of his story, though. He now enjoys a diet free of sugar and carbs. He feels so much joy, from sugar cravings and healthier than ever. You can conquer your sugar addiction too! Don't worry! The Big Takeaway: Mind Your Microbiome In the end, Dr. O'Mara's message is clear: Sugar isn't universally bad, but if your microbiome is compromised, it can be a big problem. Switching to a diet low in sugar and processed carbs, while focusing on healthy fats and proteins, can make a world of difference. If you're struggling with a sweet tooth or looking to improve your health, Dr. O'Mara's insights offer practical steps to reclaim your well-being. Whether you love sugar or are trying to cut back, today's podcast episode gives plenty of food for thought!

What music do you listen to? What songs do you turn to when you're stressed or feel alone? Are you looking for something that's good for the soul and the mind? Drew Mariani had a great conversation with Dr. Jennifer Donaldson about how classical music can work wonders on our brains. Feelings and Brain Boost: Classical music isn't just pretty to listen to; it also hits you emotionally and gets your brain working. Studies show it can seriously boost your brainpower. The Mozart Effect: Ever heard of the Mozart Effect? Listening to Mozart can give your IQ a temporary lift. Researchers at the University of California found that people who listened to Mozart scored 10 points higher on IQ tests compared to those who listened to other relaxing music. Gray Matter Magic: Musicians who play classical music have brains that age better! MRI scans show their gray matter stays stable, while the rest of us might see a 20% drop as we get older. Feel-Good Chemicals: Classical music helps your brain release endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin, making you feel good, relaxed, and even helps with pain and sleep. Old School Wisdom: Turns out, medieval folks already knew music was awesome for your mind and soul. They believed beautiful music reflects the goodness of reality, touching both emotions and intellect, and helps us thrive. Catholic Beauty: According to St. Thomas Aquinas, beauty involves proportion, clarity, and integrity. These elements are baked into classical music and align perfectly with Catholic values like truth, goodness, and beauty. Gregorian Chant: Drew and Dr. Donaldson also talked about how Gregorian chant is like a supercharger for prayer. It's basically sung prayer that helps you connect deeply with God. Music in Schools: Dr. Donaldson stressed that music and arts in schools are crucial. They help kids grow emotionally and intellectually, setting them up for a virtuous and happy life. Relaxation and Virtue: For Catholics, Dr. Donaldson believes that downtime should be about enjoying art forms that might be a bit challenging but still very rewarding. Bottom Line: Classical music is not just entertainment; it's a powerful tool for boosting brain function, emotional well-being, and spiritual growth. Whether it's Mozart, Gregorian chant, or sacred polyphony, adding beautiful music to your life can make everything better.
Are you ready to have a grace-filled Lent? What will you plan to offer up or sacrifice? What extra prayers will you add? Drew Mariani dives deep into the heart of Lent with Fr. Matthew Spencer, revealing secrets to make this season truly transformative. Here's the lowdown: Lent: Not Just Another Season: Drew kicks things off by reminding you that Lent isn't just any time of the year—it's a divine invitation to embrace God's strong grace. Cardinal Raymond Burke calls it a time of "strong grace", and boy, does he hit the nail on the head! This is your golden ticket to deepening your faith through the sacraments, prayer, and acts of charity. Ready to reboot your spiritual life? Think of Lent as your spiritual New Year! The Pitfalls of Autopilot Catholicism: Fr. Matthew Spencer jumps in with a personal confession: after 45 Lents, he's realized that going through the motions just doesn't cut it. Ever found yourself recycling last year's sacrifices? ("Goodbye, candy; see you next year!") Fr. Spencer challenges us to break free from the routine and engage with Lent with full intentionality. Let's tap into that strong grace Drew mentioned and make each Lenten sacrifice count! A Life-Changing Pause: Fr. Spencer's Turning Point: Fr. Spencer shares a heart-stopping moment from his past—a life-threatening brain injury that led him to discover the power of prayer and the Memorare. This brush with death wasn't just a wakeup call; it was a divine nudge towards the priesthood and a deeper relationship with God. Through suffering and recovery, Fr. Spencer found his true calling. Talk about finding a silver lining in the darkest clouds! Suffering: A Hidden Grace?: Drew and Fr. Spencer don't shy away from the tough stuff. Suffering—nobody wants it, but it's a powerful conduit for grace. St. Faustina and countless saints have shown us that embracing our crosses can transform us to be more like Christ. This Lent, let's not waste our sufferings. Instead, let's unite them with Christ's sacrifice on the cross. Got pain? Offer it up and watch your spiritual life flourish! The Holy Family: Our Suffering Role Models: Fr. Spencer points to the Holy Family as our ultimate guide in navigating suffering with grace. Mary and Joseph endured heartache and trials with unwavering faith. Their journey reminds us to bear our burdens patiently, discern God's message in our trials, and surrender to His divine plan. So, what's the game plan, team? Are we going to "dial it in" or dive headfirst into this season of strong grace? Let's make this Lent a time of intentional living, deep prayer, and transformative suffering, all while keeping our eyes fixed on the glory of the Resurrection. And hey, let's not forget to keep Fr. Spencer and his mission in our prayers. Let's roll up our sleeves and make this Lent one for the books!
If you've ever lost a child, you know the unimaginable pain and heartbreak that's hard to put into words. Drew Mariani visits with Elizabeth Simutis, who shares her heart-wrenching journey of healing after the stillbirth of her son, Edward Thomas Simutis. Twenty years ago, Elizabeth and her husband faced every parent's worst nightmare: the loss of their child, Edward, before he could take his first breath. Out of this profound sorrow emerged a mission of love—Ted's Diaper Drive. Elizabeth's initiative to collect diapers in memory of Edward and other babies lost too soon serves as a poignant reminder of the lives they were meant to live. This act of kindness has evolved into a movement, offering comfort to grieving families and encouraging open dialogue about loss, healing, and hope. Elizabeth's journey from despair to advocacy highlights the strength found in faith and the healing power of action. She emphasizes the importance of acknowledging the life and loss of unborn and stillborn children, advocating for a societal shift towards embracing and supporting families through their grief. Through her journey, including guidance from priests and the solace of the Eucharist, Elizabeth discovered the transformative power of giving back, turning her personal tragedy into a source of hope for others. The conversation also touches on the broader context of loss, including the pain experienced by women who have undergone abortions, echoing the universal need for compassion, understanding, and forgiveness. If you've also encountered this grief, you're encouraged to find your own path to healing, whether through creating, sharing, or simply being present to one another's pain. Elizabeth's message is clear: love and life are gifts to be cherished, honored, and remembered, no matter how brief their presence. Ted's Diaper Drive continues to be a testament to the enduring bond between a mother and her child, a symbol of hope that guides others through their darkest times towards a future where every life, no matter how small, is celebrated and mourned with dignity and love. It's a call to all of us to embrace our losses, support one another, and find meaningful ways to honor the lives that have touched ours, however briefly.

Was the Star of Bethlehem just a made-up story or was it a real historical event? If it was, what could have caused it? A divine miracle? What do you think? Drew Mariani begins by debunking the idea that the star was a mere literary device, affirming the Gospels as historical accounts of real events, including this celestial marvel. He rejects the notion that it was concocted for storytelling or theological illustration.
Did you know that participation in Freemasonry is grave sin? Why is this? Drew Mariani and Fr. Mark Baron don't hold back from sharing the truth with you. If you have been a Freemason or know someone in your family who is/was, there's something you can do to break the grip in your own life. The Vatican's stance is unambiguous: Catholics cannot simultaneously be good adherents of their faith and members of Masonic lodges. This directive traces back to a 1983 declaration, emphasizing that such dual membership results in a state of grave sin. Drew Mariani reveals that while lower levels of Freemasonry might appear harmless, the higher echelons harbor practices and beliefs that starkly contrast with Christian teachings. Freemasonry, Drew explains, transcends and opposes Christianity. It views itself as a unifier of the world, a role that belongs solely to Jesus Christ. This perspective leads to a fundamental clash between the Church and Masonry. The history of Freemasonry is also explained. Originating from medieval construction guilds, it evolved into a speculative organization promoting a naturalistic religion, rejecting supernatural revelation. This ideology naturally conflicted with the Catholic Church's doctrines. A critical aspect discussed is Freemasonry's use of symbols, many rooted in ancient Egyptian religion and occult practices. This aspect introduces a spiritual danger, aligning Freemasonry with diabolical influences. A personal story from Father Barron gives you a poignant touch. He recounts his experiences related to a family history of Freemasonry, describing a liberating spiritual deliverance following a specific prayer. This prayer, aimed at descendants of Freemasons, is suggested as a powerful tool for breaking generational curses and spiritual bonds linked to Masonic oaths. Listeners are encouraged to seek out this "Prayer of Deliverance for Descendants of Freemasons" and recite it, especially if they have Masonic ties in their family history. This act, according to Father Barron, could bring significant spiritual relief and freedom.

If you've seen "The Exorcist," you may wonder what's factual and what's Hollywood sensationalism. You may get scared when it comes to this topic. What's the truth amidst all the noise? Drew Mariani and guest Adam Blai discuss the topic of exorcisms within the Catholic Church. They touch upon several key points: The Reality of the Demonic: The Church acknowledges the existence of the demonic and the need to confront it. Adam Blai works in the Chancery and the Tribunal for the Diocese of Pittsburgh, and they discuss the unique authority of the Catholic Church in dealing with exorcisms. The Authority of the Church: Blai emphasizes the importance of having the authority of the Catholic Church behind exorcism efforts. He compares it to a citizen's arrest, explaining that attempting an exorcism without proper authority and support from the Church can be risky and ineffective. Distinguishing Between Mental Illness and Possession: They discuss the challenge of distinguishing between mental illness and possession. Blai explains that while temptation and influence from demons can be normal, possession involves specific signs that cannot be explained by medical or psychological conditions. The Role of Holy Objects: Demons perceive blessed and holy objects as painful. They can identify such objects and react to them negatively, which helps in the diagnosis of possession. Addressing Addiction and Spiritual Affliction: Blai discusses the link between addiction, particularly to pornography, and potential spiritual affliction. He suggests that while it can be difficult to determine the exact cause, a combination of psychological and spiritual factors may be at play. Possession at a Young Age: Blai explains that in theory, someone could be possessed from birth if their parents consecrated them to the demonic. However, he notes that possession typically becomes active when a person reaches an age where they can make choices about sin. Receiving the Eucharist: Possessed individuals often flee the church before receiving the Eucharist, as they cannot tolerate the presence of holy things during Mass. The episode provides insights into the Catholic Church's approach to exorcism, the importance of proper authority, and the complexity of discerning possession from other conditions. Adam Blai also mentions his book "The History of Exorcism," which is available online and in major bookstores.

Do you know much about the Shroud of Turin? Are you a believer or a skeptic? Has the Shroud helped you to fall in love with the Lord even more? Drew Mariani and guest Dr. Gilbert Lavoie discuss the mysterious piece of cloth believed by many to be the burial cloth of Jesus Christ. Dr. Lavoie's initial encounter with the Shroud was skeptical, but after studying it more deeply and examining aspects like blood marks and anatomical details, he found evidence supporting its authenticity. His book, "The Shroud of Jesus and the Sign John Ingeniously Concealed," explores his findings. A few discussion points: The Shroud of Turin is a piece of cloth that wrapped the body of Jesus Christ after his crucifixion. It has undergone extensive medical examinations and scientific studies, making it one of the most studied artifacts from antiquity. This conversation mentions various historical and archaeological artifacts, highlighting that the Shroud's level of study and controversy surpasses them all. The Catholic Church does not have an official stance on the Shroud's authenticity, but it has been venerated by the faithful. Many popes have visited the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Turin, where the Shroud is housed. Scientific research on the Shroud has been ongoing since the mid-1800s. The Shroud's photographic image turned out to be a negative, revealing more details. The image appears as if it were made by light somehow interacting with the cloth's fibers. Notable features of the Shroud include scorch-like marks that barely penetrate the surface of the fibers, human blood with type AB positive found on the cloth, pollen from the region of Judea where Jesus lived, and more. Check out the entire hour! The Shroud of Turin & the Upright Man - Relevant Radio
Bishop Robert Barron said that the faith has been watered down and that people aren't getting answers to their tough questions. So many are walking away from the Church that Jesus founded and this is a tragedy! Drew Mariani discusses this with Msgr. Charles Pope, and they agree that clear, direct, and solid teaching is what's needed to bring people back. In this confused culture we're living in, Catholics need priests and teachers who will not sanitize the truth for fear of offending. You can read Msgr. Pope's blog here!

Kirk wants those who have experienced discrimination due to their religious beliefs to join with like-minded individuals and organizations. He emphasizes the importance of standing up for one's principles and taking action to safeguard their values and the future of the nation.
Drew Mariani discusses the upcoming National Eucharistic Congress (NEC) in Indianapolis, focusing on the need for a Eucharistic revival within the Church. Dr. Scott Hahn shares his thoughts on the significance of the NEC and its connection to the new evangelization initiated by Pope Saint John Paul II 40 years ago. Dr. Hahn explains the Emmaus event as a powerful illustration of the Eucharist's importance. He describes how Jesus, after His resurrection, walks with two disciples on the road to Emmaus without revealing His identity until later when He breaks bread with them. This moment becomes the paradigm for the worship of the new covenant. Dr. Hahn emphasizes the need to cultivate Eucharistic amazement and to recognize the true significance of the Eucharist as the resurrected Lord's body, blood, soul, and divinity.
