SUMMARY   A lifelong Cavalry Trooper, retired US army Colonel, Chris Kolenda graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1987 and went on to serve in various assignments, including commanding 800 paratroopers in Eastern Afghanistan.   He served as a senior advisor to three of the 4-star generals in Afghanistan and two Secretaries of Defense before transitioning out of service in 2011 to become the Secretary of Defense representative in the peace talks with the Taliban. Chris then returned to Afghanistan as a civilian to support General Dunford as his Senior Advisor.   In 2014 Chris resigned from his government position and began to pursue his business and consulting interest in leadership and organizational management.    Chris continues to operate his successful consulting firm, Strategic Leaders Academy, and shares how his 1700-mile bicycle ride to honor his unit's six paratroopers who lost their lives in Afghanistan led to the founding of the Saber Six Foundation. The honor ride and the foundation are focused on honoring the dead and raising funds for the living. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS   00:01:09– 00:10:39: Retired US Army Colonel, Chris Kolenda shares his military career as a warrior and a diplomat before transitioning out of service to become the Secretary of Defense representative in the peace talks with the Taliban.   00:10:40 – 00:15:19  Chris discusses why he chose to start his own business rather than join a company as an employee after leaving the government and how the sense of purpose one gets from serving in the military is not the same as serving a for-profit company.     00:15:20 – 00:23:29 Chris shares how he prepared for transition and the lack thereof and why he decided to start his own consulting firm in 2014 rather than work for an existing firm.   00:23:30 – 00:33:09. Chris shares his life after the military and how working for himself allows him to do things like his 1700-mile bicycle ride to visit the graves of the six soldiers from his unit that died in 2007 while serving in Afghanistan.  He also discusses the challenges veterans face after leaving the military and why balance is giving time to each priority in your life and being fully present when you do so.         Your Move     Show resources: There is a complete shift in culture when you transition from the military to the corporate world. The focus is no longer on readiness nor even on not losing money —it's always about making money. It makes sense and, is in most ways, obvious. It's the reason companies are in business—to make money. But the cultural shift is enormous. But there is also much more to this Greco-Bactrian metropolis, which reached its height in the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC.In this second part of Tristan's chat with Milinda Hoo, Milinda talks us through the religious and burial structures that have been uncovered at Ai Khanum. Is it possible for humanity to have peace? To not have violent conflict, wars or violence in our homes, schools or online via cyberbullying? As you ponder this question, you might draw on your hopes, experience of human behaviour and possibly what you think is realistic – this is a show about risk and uncertainty after all. Meet our latest guest, Jeremy Gilley. Jeremy is the founder of Peace One Day, a non-profit organisations whose objective is to institutionalise the International Day of Peace (September 21st each year). Jeremy is a documentary film maker, actor and he founded Peace One Day in 1999. Peace One Day is an impressive organisation. In 2001, its efforts were rewarded when the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted the first day of global ceasefire and non-violence – Peace Day. In 2007, Peace One Day Ambassador Jude Law travelled to Afghanistan and met with the government, the UN, non-governmental organisations, paving the way for a day of ceasefire in Eastern Afghanistan. This allowed 10,000 volunteers to administer polio vaccines to 1.4 million children. Peace One Day works with world leaders, major corporations and celebrities like Jude Law and its two other ambassadors Juliet Rylance, and Mike Posner, as well as Sir Michael Caine, Forest Whitaker, Akon, Michelle Rodriguez – the list goes on and on. In a few weeks, on Sept 21st, Peace One Day will celebrate its 20th anniversary. While this conversation certainly covers the organisation Jeremy founded, it is deeper than that. It is a conversation about who we are as human beings – about our darkness, about why cynicism kills and about what we can do about that. It serves as a reminder that violence not only takes place in far flung places but that it also occurs in our homes, schools and communities. Listen with an open mind and heart. And, on September 21st ask yourself “with whom will I make peace?” Show Notes: Peace One Day                 On Twitter                 On Instagram                 On Facebook                 On YouTube Peace One Day's Origin Story Film Jeremy on Twitter Jeremy on Instagram The  Hero's Journey by Joseph Campbell Greta Thunberg The Second Mountain by David Brooks My conversation with Ken Bensinger, author of “Red Card” _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Like what you heard? Carmen Gentile is a journalist who has reported from war zones, embedded with Army units, to get the real story on the ground for the public to learn. In September of 2010 while in Eastern Afghanistan however, his livelihood and passion took a horrific turn when he was hit in the face with an RPG. This all happened as Carmen was capturing stories on the ground, and due to this, the entire ambush was caught on film and is now up on Youtube. As you can imagine after shattering and blinding his right eye, this led to a long and trying recovery process dealing with a lot of physical and emotional pain which he documents in his book, “Blindsided by the Taliban: A Journalist’s Story of War, Trauma, Love, and Loss.” Incredibly, Carmen went right back to work in the Middle East once he was healed despite many thinking he was crazy for it. In this interview we not only discuss Carmen’s story, but what it means to be a journalist working from war zones in this era. Carmen also relays a funny story involving the idol worship of Army generals he’s seen during his time, and in this case, General Patraeus. In addition to his work, Carmen is a motorcycle enthusiast and he’s currently tying this passion with a future story on the ground in Iraq. You’ll hear all about that right here on Episode 415…crank it up! Learn more about your ad-choices at https://news.iheart.com/podcast-advertisers

On September 9, 2010, veteran journalist Carmen Gentile was embedded with the US Forces in Eastern Afghanistan a couple of miles from the Pakistani border. It was the last day of Ramadan and they were talking to some young men on the side of the road when he heard a whooshing noise. Carmen turned around and saw a man 40 yards down the road cradling a rocket-propelled grenade launcher. From the end of the launcher was a beeline of smoke, at the end of which was a conical tip of an ordnance coming right at him. The grenade hit Carmen in the side of the face without detonating. It blinded him in the right eye and fractured the right side of his face. Carmen talks about the experience and the whole ordeal in his book, Blindsided by the Taliban. Love the show?
