Send us a textWelcome back, peasants. In this spicy no-ads-needed episode, the Ones Ready crew tears into the mind-numbing chaos that is the DoD's budgeting incompetence. From canceled bonuses to SkillBridge chaos and the eternal mystery of why military uniforms fit nobody, this is your front-row seat to the clown show that is Pentagon-level “planning.”Also? If you thought complaining about gear was just a “female” issue, strap in. We're about to tell you why literally everyone from PJs to SEALs has been modifying crap for decades—and no, it's not the patriarchy, it's just government contracts. Plus, the AC-130 gets its flowers, JC's got Overwatch, and somehow we talk about dental X-rays and slings made from Pelican hooks.
Send us a textIn today's Daily Drop, Peaches wades through 20+ pages of Pentagon memos so you don't have to—and the headlines are as wild as you'd expect. From the DoD accelerating AI and electronic warfare for SOF teams (because robot war is here), to the Pentagon trying to fire every transgender troop in 30 days (seriously), it's another day in America's defense soap opera. Also: the Space Force is debating whether orbital refueling is even worth it, even though it sounds like the coolest sci-fi thing ever; the B-52 radar upgrade blows past budget (shocker); and the Air Force finally admits the CV-22 Osprey might never hit full capability again (gasp). And yes, the crew debates which generation would actually win in an all-out war cage match—Gen X or the Greatest Generation?
Send us a textIn today's cerebral Daily Ops Brief, Peaches breaks down the Defense Department's latest dumpster fire: whether to park Space Command's shiny new paradigm shift in Colorado or Alabama. Also, some genius of the Military Industrial Complex just texted the entire Internet our plans for Houthi rebels. Throw in DEI purges, child care collapse, and a disgraced AFSOC leader, and you've got a government that's firing on no cylinders. We cover real estate speculation, government hiring freezes that move slower than molasses in formation, and why Canada's aircraft shopping spree might be a Costco mistake.
Subscriber-only episodeSend us a textIn this absolute banger of an episode, Peaches and Trent casually disassemble the military-industrial complex, parenting guilt, British censorship, and how not to run a drone program… all while planning t-shirt logistics and surviving haunted Airbnbs. It's like sitting in on a leadership meeting, a roast, and an existential crisis—all at the same time.We kick things off with crop dusters—no, not the fart kind, the literal aircraft AFSOC spent $2 billion on instead of investing in drone tech that actually works at elevation. Then we spiral into public affairs drama (hi PAO
Send us a textWelcome to your daily dose of unfiltered chaos, where Peaches breaks down the news like a sledgehammer breaks through PR-approved nonsense. This ain't your polished AFN brief—this is the real rundown, straight from the Ones Ready bunker. Spoiler: if you love taxpayer-funded crop dusters, British police overreach, or beard policies held together by ETP duct tape—you're in for a treat. From the Panama Canal to Star Wars-era missile defense, the DEI purge of Maya Angelou, and the ongoing saga of “Fat Tony” Bauerfein, Peaches' on one today. We're talking about $2B aircraft that couldn't win a dogfight with a Pelican, the kind of “malicious compliance” that gets classics deleted from Navy libraries, and how shadow banning is the new way to say “you're winning.”

In the next episode of our new Academic Arsenal series – focused on NPS students' defense-relevant research – host Eric Czaja speaks with two U.S. Air Force senior pilots in the defense analysis program whose examination of amphibious aircraft could offer an innovative solution to logistics challenges in the Indo-Pacific. Trident Room Podcast host U.S. Army Maj. Eric Czaja has a conversation with NPS Department of Defense Analysis students U.S. Air Force Maj. Bobby Strain and U.S. Air Force Maj. Tim Marti. This episode was recorded on August 31, 2024. Maj. Bobby Strain is a U.S. Air Force senior pilot with more than 2,450 flying hours in the C-5M and KC-135R/T. A 2011 ROTC graduate of the Colorado School of Mines, he has flown missions worldwide, including combat missions in support of Operations Enduring Freedom, Resolute Support, Inherent Resolve, and Freedom's Sentinel. Maj. Tim Marti is also a U.S. Air Force senior pilot with more than 2,000 hours flying the U-28 and other various AFSOC aircraft, including combat missions in Operation Inherent Resolve. Together, Strain and Marti have authored a joint thesis entitled “Airpower Beyond the Runway: Amphibious Aircraft to Enhance Agility in INDOPACOM.” Their thesis explores how seaplanes, specifically amphibious aircraft, can support the U.S. Joint Force while also creating challenges for adversaries in the Indo-Pacific. The study explores the limitations of current assets and the advantages of utilizing seaplanes in two fictional scenarios. Utilizing a mixed methods qualitative/quantitative approach to compare seaplanes against various platforms – including aircraft, ships, boats, and submarines – the study showcases the seaplane's unique advantages due to its speed, range, and access to remote locations. The study concludes with a series of recommendations for the DOD to inform decision-makers of the potential for investment in amphibious aircraft, and suggests courses of action to validate the requirement. ----------------- The Trident Room Podcast is brought to you by the Naval Postgraduate School Alumni Association and the Naval Postgraduate School Foundation. www.npsfoundation.org For comments, suggestions, and critiques, please email us at TridentRoomPodcastHost@nps.edu, and find us online at nps.edu/tridentroompodcast. We did a contracting episode a few weeks ago where we aired out a few grievances mostly focused on how strength and conditioning coaches in contracted roles with the military are treated. In that conversation we acknowledged that we have limited experience with contracting, and we were open to having an expert come on and set the record straight. As it happens, this week's guest is exactly the kind of expert we were looking for. Chris Larkin is LMR Technical Group CEO and Cofounder and his background covers enlisted and officer service in Air Force Special Warfare and extensive involvement in military human performance in multiple different roles. Chris spent 28 years total in the Air Force as an enlisted Combat Controller and Special Tactics Officer, starting to advocate for military human performance initiatives even before commissioning. He served as the first Squadron Commander at the Special Tactics Training Squadron and helped establish the Combat Athlete Program (which pre-dated SOCOM POTFF) working with AF Research Lab and USAFA Human Performance Lab. He had HPO specific facilities built at the STTS and 23 Special Tactics Squadron – some of the first built in the DoD and even ran one of the first ever Human Performance Symposiums (bringing in industry, academia, and other military units to help solve HPO problems). He wrote his thesis at the Joint Advanced Warfighting School (JAWS) on “Combat Fitness a Concept Vital to National Defense” and was an Operational Squadron commander when POTFF came to AFSOC and even deployed HPO staff into Afghanistan to expedite the recovery process. His credentials include a bachelors in Exercise Science, Master Fitness Trainer, ACSM Exercise Leader, and USA Triathlon Coach. He's also an accomplished athlete in his own right. He ran Division 1 Cross Country and Southwest Texas State University. He has represented the Air Force in downhill skiing, triathlon, pentathlon, and Ironman - including 3 Ironman finishes. And he has 3,000 parachute jumps – including numerous demonstrations at events including NFL, MLB, NASCAR.

Recently the Commander of AFSOC, Air Force Special Operations Command, sent a letter to his chain of command asking for the combat dive school and qualification to be removed from the Air Force Special Warfare pipeline. Episode Summary: In Episode 132 of the Aerospace Advantage, Humans Are More Important Than Hardware: SOF Truth #1, John “Slick” Baum chats with longtime AFSOC pilot Col Sarah Brehm, veteran defense leader Mr. Jim “Hondo” Geurts, and AFSOC Special Tactics Officer Lt Col Steve Cooper about the United States Special Operations Command's core values, what they call SOF Truths. These tenets have defined the culture of SOCOM since 1987, which means they've connected special operators across different service components for generations—and this includes Air Force Special Operations. The first SOF Truth declares that “humans are more important than hardware.” However, given that technology permeates today's battlefields more than ever, what does this really mean? To this point, how does the Department of Defense emphasize the importance of our human capital when the budget is geared toward the procurement of new hardware? We also explore how this ideal applies to the broader conventional force. Welcome to the Do Hard Things Podcast with your host Jay Tiegs, Are you ready to amplify and improve your life? Then you are in the right place. On this podcast we have unfiltered conversation with inspiring people who take on challenges and share with us, the wisdom from their journey. We talk about how doing hard things adequately enable all of us to deal with life's struggles and challenges and ultimately improve the quality of our lives. In this episode, we talk about finding direction with Andrew Beattie from Azimuth X. Andrew Beattie is an Air Force veteran (AFSOC), Air Traffic Controller, and founder of Azimuth X, a leadership and management training and coaching company. Over the years, he struggled with working for and listening to experiences of bad organizational leadership and management. Andrew enrolled in countless courses and read countless books to learn more about the respective fields. Eventually, at 18, he had his first management position and started to gain experience. Combining what he learned, his experiences, and finding great mentors, he could piece together the reasons, so many people were having these bad experiences with leaders/managers. It boiled down to two main things: Lack of training and what courses were taught. Andrew's mission is to move people in the right direction on their leadership and management journeys through proper instruction of time-tested methods, building structure, and continuing education. On this episode of the Ones Ready podcast, the team sits down with retired Combat Control Legend Chief Mike Lampe. So, you wanna live the life? I'm hearing "be a PJ" - what an honor to sit down with Mr. Aaron Love to learn about his tenure as a PJ in the USAF. This episode was a lot of fun, learning about what drove him down the military path, what connected him to the PJ world, the motivation behind it, as well as a brief look into the life. Lieutenant-Colonel Rob Marshall is a United States Air Force pilot who has spent much of his career in the Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC). The command's units are composed of highly trained, rapidly deployable airmen who are equipped with specialized aircraft to conduct special operations missions around the globe. In this episode the Colonel shares his memories of flying the MC-130P Combat Shadow, an aircraft that he calls the "Jeep of the Sky". You'll hear about standard Air Force training, and how AFSOC trains, which is amongst the most demanding in the military. You'll hear examples of how the AFSOC community excels in special tactics like flying low and dirty, often with little or no support. The Colonel speaks about some of the harrowing experiences he's had in various parts of the world, both in joint combined exercises and in combat. Please share, like and follow us, because you won't want to miss any future episodes, especially when the Colonel will share his experiences of flying the AFSOC CV-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft.Thank you LtCol Marshall for sharing your story with us!Go Bold!
Sgts. Janiqua Robinson and Sara Voigt interview AFSOC commander and special operations lifer Lt. Gen. James Slife to discuss new technologies, capabilities and priorities as the United States shifts focus from decades of conflict in Afghanistan, Iraq and the War on Terror to countering peer adversaries; Russia and China.
In this episode, the commander of Air Force Special Operations Command, the CODEMANDOS, a 3-D printing guru and the director of the HSU Innovation Institute tell us about the current projects and accomplishments Airmen on the road to accelerate change.
Started this week with the ongoing drama between Russia and Ukraine, with Russian hackers taking over Ukraine government websites. Then it was more AFSOC fallout over the female trainee, Tonga volcano eruption, Iraq US embassy rocket attack, the ridiculous voting non-issue, Bronx fire kills 17, and a former ballet dancer in the UK on cocaine pleasures self at an intersection in London. Music: Bernard Lavilliers/"Traffic"
Irregular warfare is executed across all domains. In the air, the responsibility for IW falls to Air Force Special Operations Command. Today, the command stands at an inflection point in which it must prepare to compete against great powers while continuing the fight against violent extremist organizations. How must AFSOC change in order to meet divergent demands for specialized airpower? This episode featured a conversation with two guests who address that question: Lt. Gen. James C. Slife, commander of AFSOC, and Dr. Richard Norton, a retired Air Force officer and adjunct professor at the Joint Special Operations University. The first podcast of 2022 started with the news I helped spread this week of an AFSCO whistleblower memo alleging wildly favorable treatment to a female officer combat control candidate and the chaos it has unleashed within the Special Tactics community. Then it was the India temple stampede, the North Korean defector who changed his mind, a new product to help premature ejaculation, old man falls to his death in a volcano, and an old guy in Korea killed an employee by jamming a 70cm stick into his rectum. Music: Daggers/"We Came As Romans"
On this episode of the Ones Ready podcast we sit down with the Air Force Special Operations Command Senior Enlisted Leader, Command Chief Corey Olson. Chief Olson has spent over thirty years in the USAF and most of it in Special Operations. He is a loadmaster by trade, but has experience at every echelon within AFSOC. During our sit down he talks about where AFSOC has been and where it will be in the future, he hits at changes coming to AFSW, but since it's in its infancy stages doesn't go too far into it, and then just raps with the guys about AFSOC stuff. Dr Lim from SKRATCH LABS talks about overtraining. This is an insidious syndrome from doing too much and not recovering enough. It is complex, can take 2-4 weeks to recover from, and is all too common. Avoiding overtraining along with reducing injuries from training is one of the reasons we need coaches, very few people can coach themselves when training hard and operating harder! Although they barely knew each other, when Scott Light heard that fellow air commando Brian Kimber needed a kidney, he answered the call. CCM Greg Smith and SGM Matt Parrish talk with Scott and Brian about what it's like to find out you have a disease that won't just end your career but could end your life, and how discovering a donor match would lead to a new lease on life for both of them.
The unbelievable story of how one rescue attempt made this group of Air Force and Army Special Operations feel like they made a difference. In 2001 there was an assassination attempt against then acting President of Afghanistan, President Karzai. His PSD (Personal Security Detail) were U.S. Navy SEALS. One of the SEALS was shot in the head – and this is the real-life story of the rescue – Told by retired (AFSOC, Air Force Special Operations Command) helicopter pilot Bryan Martyn. Bryan Martyn was the Mission Commander. This short clip represents the power, courage and professionalism of our United States Military and AFSOC. The ability to change missions at a moment's notice and execute the flying and rescue aspect of this mission speaks to the training and expertise of members of this unit. Health can be defined in many ways, but generally refers to the balance between mind, body, and emotions. If one of these is out of order, that means that, firstly, you are not totally healthy, and secondly you are not completely happy. Resilient people always seek to offer the best version of themselves in every aspect of their life, so you will need to be healthy, strong, and fulfilled to reach this version of yourself. Keep in mind that emotional and physical resilience gives you strength, mental and physical strength makes you healthy, mental, and emotional resilience makes you feel happy and fulfilled. To have a healthy mind we must keep in mind and practice these things: Clear your mind. This refers to freeing it from one thought after another. For this, Jairek recommends doing breathing exercises and taking a bath with cold water. Sit for three minutes in the shower. Open the tap and let the water run over you, with this is guaranteed to leave your mind free of all thoughts. Calm your mind and keep it focused. Many times we are in a work meeting or playing with our children and our mind has a whole hurricane inside it, thinking of thousands of things at the same time, which causes us to lose focus. Jairek invites you to apply these exercises: ➤ To calm your mind: Inhale for 4 seconds and exhale for 4 seconds, inhale again for 4 seconds and exhale for 4 seconds. Practice it for 3 to 5 minutes. ➤ To maintain focus: Inhale for 4 seconds, but this time exhales for 2 seconds, inhale again for 4 seconds, and exhale for 2 seconds. Practice it for 3 to 5 minutes. These are the tools that Jairek Robbins leaves us in this episode. Jairek Robbins, performance coach and motivational speaker, graduated from the University of San Diego. Has been coaching business owners, teams, and individuals for over a decade to achieve world-class results in work and life through his personal Coaching. Jairek has delivered training and speeches to millions of people worldwide, speaking to businesses and organizations including, Ameriprise Financial, Harvard University, Leadership Conference, United States Air Force, AFSOC, Century 21, BMW, United States Marine Corps, etc. Founder of the Jairek Robbins Companies and later started Rapid Results Retreat, wrote a book entitled: Live It: Achieve Success by Living with Purpose. If you want to achieve a stronger and healthier mind, stay until the end of this podcast that is undoubtedly an explosion of greatness and, remembers: Learn it, Live it, Give it - Jairek Robbins. In this episode, we explore: 1) How to maintain the best version of you. 2) The 3 elements of a healthy mind 3) How to clear and focus your mind. 4) How to get your second mountain. Hey listeners, welcome back! As you all know, America has been in one of the longest wars in our history. Since 911, we’ve had over 2.5 million service members in those conflicts in the Middle East with many soldiers returning home with devastating injuries. The signature wound of war has been dubbed PTSD but many have come home with traumatic brain injuries which in the long term has been a critical issue with servicemembers reintegrating back into civilian life. Are you a spouse or caregiver of a veteran who requires assistance but feel as though you need support too? Well we gotcha covered...today’s guest is Dan Arnold with Operation Family Caregiver which helps the families of returning service members and veterans by teaching them the skills they need to manage their challenges as they adjust to their “new Normal”. Guest Daniel Arnold married with four children. He is a 22 1/2-year Air Force Veteran from June 1984 – Jan 2007, retired in 2007 at the rank of MSgt, then after that for the next 10 years hw was a Military spouse following his wife around until she retired in 2017. Currently he works at Veterans One Stop Center, as a Military Family Caregiver Coach, where he works directly with Caregivers to our Veterans, to ensure that Military Family Caregivers are taking care of themselves so they can provide the best possible care for our Veterans. During his time in the service he was given a substantial amount of medical training as an enlisted member. He obtained my emergency medical certifications at the Basic, Intermediate, and Paramedic levels. He was trained as an Independent Duty Medical Technician, and as a Special Operation Forces Medical Element he was lucky enough to attend medical training at the Special Operation Combat Medic (SOCM) course at Fort Bragg. He was also trained as an Independent Duty Medical Technician. He deployed to OEF/OIF multiple times and have completed numerous Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) specific missions in Bosnia, Africa, South America, and Southwest Asia. At the end of his military career he was the ASFOC Career Field Manager for Enlisted Medical personnel, Senior AFSOC Medic, and represented AFSOC and the Air Force in developing the Tactical Combat Casualty Care training criteria for Special Operation Medics. During his time as a Military Spouse he was lucky enough to continue serving by working as a Military Educational Specialist while stationed overseas. He started working at The Veteran One-stop of WNY where he completed training as a Military Caregiver Coach in May 2018, through the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving. Currently they partner with the Rosalyn Carter Institute and he serves our Military Veteran Caregivers here in Buffalo and the Northeastern United States. He also helps run a Veteran Peer support program through the PFC Joseph P Dwyer Program at the Veterans One-stop Center of WNY.
Began this week with an overview of the US states beginning to reopen, and talk a bit about NY still undercounting nursing home deaths. Plus the Taliban reaches new heights in barbarism in slaying mothers and newborn babies, the absurdity of AFSOC saying they'll move away from physical performance in assessing candidates, NFL players accused of armed robbery, and a guy in Australia is trying to blackmail his ex by posting video of her having sex with his dog. Today the Pulse team sits down with a few members from the POTFF team and discuss some things we should keep in mind while staying indoors. The POTFF program is a Special Operations Command initiative, executed throughout Air Force Special Operations Command, focusing on enhancing resiliency skills of Air Commandos and their families. During his 22 years of active-duty service as a bioenvironmental engineer, he served as an Air Staff officer, element chief, flight and squadron commander, executive officer, Air Force Fellow and MAJCOM staff officer. He has held numerous positions including: installation Crisis Action Team director, installation radiation safety officer; consultant to wing Emergency Operation Centers; consultant for environmental, safety and occupational health committees and MAJCOM/installation readiness/force protection/threat working groups; and functional consultant to the Air Force Surgeon General, AMC, AFSOC and Seventh Air Force Surgeon General. Share a story: SrA Littrell and his willingness to volunteer to stay longer in Kuwait. That is when I knew you were always going to be successful in life because you were willing to sacrifice for your fellow airmen. Great assignment – Each one afforded me the chance to work with some amazing people across all of the services. The greatest lesson learned was the importance of service to others (servant leadership). If you genuinely care for your fellow soldier, sailor, airman, marine or coastie, then you will gain the trust and respect of others and your unit will benefit from everyone's success. When you are willing to sacrifice for others, then we will know that you are attempting to make the best decision for your organization. In the end, you will walk away from your military service with very few regrets.
