Subscriber-only episodeSend us a textWelcome to the most line-stepping, career-defying, rule-dodging episode in Ones Ready history. We're joined by none other than Jonathan Harmon—PJ-turned-CRO, Red Wings rescue mastermind, tactical genius, and part-time aircraft hijacker (allegedly). From failing swim tests and skydiving with squirrels in Florida, to running the Combined Air Operations Center during Operation Red Wings, Harmon proves one thing: you don't need a six-pack or clearance to change the entire course of a war—you just need audacity and a spreadsheet. We're talking real-deal combat rescue, bootstrapping squadrons from zero gear, calling out toxic “quiet professional” culture, and the exact moment where someone looked him in the eye and said: “You're not Adonis. Get out of my team room.”Strap in. This is not a SEAL movie. It's the story of the actual dudes who saved lives, built the system, and then had to figure out how to buy drywall to build their own squadron walls.

In This Episode You Will Hear: • I don't think I could beat Marcus at arm wrestling if I can't pick up a bowling ball. (1:58) • You do realize there's a thing called old man strength? (5:53) • [Rob O'Neil] I have a podcast as well, called “The Operator.” We're called The Operator because if you're doing anything, you're an operator. (6:18) • Having a big man to kick your ass and teach you wind a bobbin; you realize there is skill here. (9:59) • When people quit BUDS, it's not because “this is hard”. [It's because] I'm tired of the broken foot; I'm tire of the shin splints; I'm tire of my dislocated shoulder; I'm tired. 21:20) • In BUDS, one of the biggest problems is eating too much. Like I want 5 cheeseburgers, but we have a 4-mile run afterwards. (26:35) • [Rob] and for everyone that doesn't know, can you explain what a SDV is? [Marcus] Imagine a mini submarine and shrink it down. The difference is that a submarine is dry inside, and the SDV is completely full of water. (37:40) • Listen to Marcus discuss the details of being in an SDV for 8 hours. (38:52) • [Marcus] Talk about ultimate torture - If you have a deep freeze in your garage, fill that sucker full of water, crawl in there and sit down for 8 hours. (38:53) • The first time I got in there, I was terrified. (43:49) • [Marcus] There's stuff that happens to us out there. Sometimes safety gets in the way of it. (58:40) • [After falling down the mountain during Operation Red Wings] I could hear that stream running. I've got to get me water, but I kept thinking I can't drink out of it, because my buddies are in it. (79:27) • If you want to make God laugh, tell Him what your plan is. (90:24) • [Marcus] Bro, when you saw that son of a bitch's face [Osama Bin Laden], what was the first thing you saw? [Rob O'Neal] I saw his nose. He was skinny, wearing white – tall. (93:41) • My nickname was “Nisro” (Navy SEAL Rob O'Neal). When they asked “Who got him?” They go “Nisro,” and they said “Fuck! Were never gonna hear the end of it.” (95:38) Socials: - IG: mchooyah - Host of The Operator Podcast - IG: team_neverquit , marcusluttrell , melanieluttrell , huntero13 - https://www.patreon.com/teamneverquit Sponsors: - Navyfederal.org - GoodRX.com/TNQ - kalshi.com/TNQ - PXG.com/TNQ - joinbilt.com/TNQ - Tonal.com [TNQ] - greenlight.com/TNQ - PDSDebt.com/TNQ - drinkAG1.com/TNQ - ghostbed.com/TNQ [TNQ] - Shadyrays.com [TNQ] - qualialife.com/TNQ [TNQ] - Hims.com/TNQ - Shopify.com/TNQ - Aura.com/TNQ - Moink.com/TNQ - Policygenius.com - TAKELEAN.com [TNQ] - usejoymode.com [TNQ] - Shhtape.com [TNQ] - mackweldon.com/utm_source=streaming&utm_medium=podcast&utm_campaign=podcastlaunch&utm_content=TNQutm_term=TNQ

Ben also shares some of his personal journal notes with the listening audience as well. This is an episode you won't want to miss! In This Episode You Will Hear: • [Michael Murphy] was well respected. He and a couple of officers everybody loved. (15:30) • The physical part [of BUDS] was the hardest for me. I never thought I would quit, but I didn't know if I would make it. I asked the Lord, “If you want me to do this, show me a sign.” And He did. I saw a Trident up in the sky. (18:12) • I wanted to go to SEAL team 4 because of watching all the Vietnam documentaries. (27:06) • They were passing out a paper and everybody had to write down why you joined, and I wrote “Patriotism.” (31:20) • I'll tell you somebody else that doesn't get recognition – divers. (38:49) • I was wanting to go to Afghanistan more so than Iraq just because I was never really interested in the urban-style of combat. (38:49) • Team 10 was really cool. (41:06) • [Danny Dietz] was a good guy from the start. When I first showed up, he always went around without a shirt. He was ripped like Bruce Lee. (43:09) • [Danny Dietz] was always trying to mentor, no matter who they were. • [Melanie] Q: How many people in a bee hut? A: 6 maximum. They were like mini chicken coops. (46:06) • I hated wearing body armor. (48:59) • Excerpt from Ben's “Green Book:” I'm tired of all this so-called professionalism crap. I can't wait to get out – be my own man instead of a peasant in the military. (59:31) • How were we that close to one another when we were only there a couple of months? Just sitting around the fire talking. Welcome to this week's episode of the Team Never Quit podcast. Today, we are honored to host Bill Wagasy, a decorated U.S. Navy SEAL veteran, former Notre Dame football player, and current VP of national sales for Commonwealth Land Title Company. Bill's journey from the gridiron to the battlefield and beyond is nothing short of extraordinary. In college, Bill played as a reserve outside linebacker under Coach Lou Holtz, and harnessed the lasting influence of Coach Holtz's relentless pursuit of excellence. Post-college, Bill pursued a law degree and a master's in dispute resolution from Pepperdine University. However, driven by a deep sense of duty, Bill joined the Navy and became a Navy SEAL, completing four combat tours between 2002 and 2012—three in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. His specialties included lead sniper, lead breacher, JTAC, and lead navigator. After his military career, Bill discusses the transition to civilian life and working with the Gary Sinise Foundation, and the importance of resilience, duty, and honor in his life and career. We are deeply grateful to Bill Wagasy for sharing his powerful story. His unwavering dedication to service and the indomitable spirit he embodies serve as an inspiration to us all. In This Episode You Will Hear: • The first time she [my sister] ever did Boston [marathon] was the year of the bombing. That was the first public event I ever went to when I got out of the SEAL teams. (16:08) • I feel like a wonderful, all-American upbringing. (22:28) • My coach [at Notre Dame] was coach [Lou] Holtz. (27:43) • One of the greatest things I can say about him [Coach Lou Holtz] – He brought an intensity and a passion every single day for five years I was there. He never had an off day. (27:57) • Do what's right. It's not right to find your teammate's wallet before he loses it. (28:52) • The way you show people you care – is if your part of a team, you have to put forth incredible effort and mental focus. Do your best in every single facet, from execution and preparation. (29:17) • Every day, you've gotta bring it. (29:51) • There's nothing that anybody could've ever said to me when I was going through SEAL training that would have the effect of what Coach Holtz said to me. (32:42) • There's a huge jump between having a dream, and having the courage to follow it. (43:57) • While we were in sniper school, that's when Operation Red Wings went down. (69:20) • When they found you [Marcus Luttrell] it was like a miracle, like no one could believe that you were alive. It was bittersweet because we lost everybody else. (81:46) • Our fastest sniper rifle shoots about 3,000 feet per second, and an explosive goes somewhere around 12,000 to 25,000 feet per second. (95:02) • I was in a vehicle rollover where I shattered my right wrist, and had a level 5 shoulder separation on my left side. I was in the hospital for ten days. (103:59) • He (Gary Sinise) truly lived the example of “We can never do enough for our veterans, but we can always do a little bit more.” (131:10) • If you were to ask me what 2 years I would never want to repeat again in my life, it's the 2 years transitioning out of the military into the private sector and starting from scratch at 42 years old. • I had 1 superpower in BUDS and that was taking cold water and just splattering everybody. (156:24)
Every year thousands of people, including me, my family, and some friends, complete the “Murph Challenge”. This workout used to be called the “Memorial Day Murph”. The workout is running one mile, then completing a total of 100 pull ups, 200 push-ups, 300 air squats, then running another mile. To do the full workout, a twenty-pound weight vest or plate carrier should be worn. This workout is one that was regularly completed by Lt. Michael Murphy. Lt. Murphy was a Navy SEAL who was killed in Afghanistan in 2005 during Operation Red Wings. On today's episode, From Surrounded to Savior: How Navy SEAL Lt. Michael Murphy Turned Hope into Action, I'll share the story behind the workout and more importantly how Lt. Murphy used the hope of saving his teammates to formulate a plan and took action to execute it.The Problem: The SEAL mission was compromised when the team was spotted by local nationalsThe Hope: The SEALs can move towards their exfiltration or exit location and make it back to base The Plan: Fight as necessary and escape and evade the larger enemy force The Solution: Bound down the mountain, fight, and call for help Until next time, keep striving, remember the reason for our long Memorial Day weekend and make this an opportunity to kickstart your fitness journey. Stay safe, thank you to all that served and were lost, and Godspeed. Kevin

This week, Marcus Luttrell and former U.S. Air Force PJ and combat rescue officer, Jonathan Harmon, pick up where they left off in their last episode, bringing to the table a deep dive discussion regarding the details of how Jonathan was able to reasonably calculate Marcus' direction and future location during the Operation Red Wings series of events in Afghanistan in June, 2005. Many details of that op are included in today's discussion. It has now been 18 years since Operation Red Wings occurred. NOTE: “PJ” (Air Force Pararescuemen) are the only DOD elite combat forces specifically organized, trained, equipped, and postured to conduct full spectrum Personnel Recovery (PR) to include both conventional and unconventional combat rescue operations. Listen in as Jonathan & Marcus discuss the details of the efforts it took to bring Marcus home as the lone survivor of that operation. In this episode you will hear: • He [Matt Axelson] had made it close to a village and ended up being shot and killed. And then a villager took his body even further away and buried it. (4:27) • The best record we have [of Operation Red Wings] is from Marcus' memory. (5:24) • I think the American public would find it completely fascinating to learn what efforts our government will go to, to bring their people home. (10:24) • What if you had the ability - and we knew there was a television close by - and you're being held in a foreign country. It [a discrete message] could be so much as just a message on the television as simple as a small American flag on the screen. (11:55) • If you can think of the worst day of your entire life, and how despondent you can be - that's every day in captivity. (13:17) • He [Marcus' primary target] - disappeared through an air strike. (18:31) • So I hand my map off, [and proceeds to list his specific findings] and predict where they would end up, and I'm told: “We're going to Afghanistan.” (23:36) • The two [sources of information - the Army's findings and Jonathan's findings] validated one another. So we had a location and we had confirmation. (28:07) • For those that don't know, we stripped that aircraft down. We took nothing that wasn't necessary. (30:00) • I like to call it a recovery – not of remains – but of a person because rescue would imply that we are rescuing you from our friendly forces. That's not necessarily the case. (30:58) • I think the first thing [that should happen to Marcus after his recovery] is that and he needed to get a full blown medical evaluation. (33:27) • Doc Dickens will convince you that you are superman. You're the fullest expression of yourself. (38:32) • If there was a father figure for all of us – it was him [Doc Dickens]. (40:29) • One has to consider the gravity of the circumstances [of Operation Red Wings]. The single most loss of life in the history of the United States Navy SEALS just happened. (42:27) • To be given the clothing of the village elder is a personification of being him himself. (51:10) • [Jonathan telling Marcus] Your adherence to your faith in captivity was unique among all stories I've ever heard. (51:48) • If you pull the John Wayne act [while in enemy captivity], you're gonna get tortured and killed. (53:52) • He [Marcus] rewrote singlehandedly a lot of our resistance posture training because we were fighting a different kind of enemy that we didn't write manuals for. (56:10) • [Marcus] They would laugh at me because I would fall down, and I just kept trying. I would fail all the time. I can't believe they kept me. (60:19) • [Jonathan to Marcus] I have a question to ask you and I want you to think about this. Do you want to continue to operate? Or do you want to be a hero? And he thinks about it and says, “Fuck, man. I wanna operate.” (71:58) • We learned early on that asking permission wasn't gonna work. The very first thing I learned from the SEALS – beg for forgiveness. (87:55)
June 28, 2005 is remembered as one of the biggest losses the SF/SO community has endured. We have seen the portrayal of that battle and the rescue missions in the movie Lone Survivor and in documentaries from the Smithsonian Institute. Hundreds of thousands of people have since found inspiration and displayed high levels of patriotism in honor of the bravery and valor these men displayed. Today, we ask you to get to know the men behind the uniform and join us in keeping their memories alive along with those who knew them best. Say their names to a friend or family member and share their stories with those who may not know. It has been said that when a loved one dies, the family experiences two deaths – once when they leave this earth and again when people forget who they were. Please join us and never forget those who gave all during Operation Red Wings. In this episode, you will hear from: • Laura McGreevy, Surviving Spouse of Lt Michael M. McGreevy, Jr. • Char Westfall, Surviving Spouse of SOC Jacques J. Fontan • Erin Taylor, Surviving Spouse of SO1 Jeffrey S. Murphy • Claudia Suh, Sister to SO2 James E. Suh Note: Not all families were able to participate in the video calls from which this audio was derived. We will always remember them and thank them for their service. Other Soldiers Who Gave All During Operation Red Wings: • CWO3 Corey J. Goodnature • SGT Kip A. Jacoby • LCDR Erik S. Kristensen • SFC Marcus V. Muralles • MSG James W. Ponder, III • MAJ Stephen C. Reich • SFC Michael L. Russell • CWO4 Chris J. Scherkenbach Marcus continues to honor the fallen and asks that you join him never forgetting their bravery and sacrifice. June 28, 2005 – Never Forget.
In this week's Team Never Quit episode, Marcus has a deep dive conversation with U.S. Air Force PJ, and combat rescue officer, Jonathan Harmon. NOTE: “PJ” (Air Force Pararescuemen) are the only DOD elite combat forces specifically organized, trained, equipped, and postured to conduct full spectrum Personnel Recovery (PR) to include both conventional and unconventional combat rescue operations. Jonathan was instrumental in successfully locating Marcus in Afghanistan with the most miniscule of data which facilitated his subsequent rescue. Listen in to Jonathan's fascinating details of all that it takes to bring our soldiers home. In this episode you will hear: • My Aunt was a WASP (Women's Auxiliary Service Pilot). She flew aircraft across the Atlantic, and trained other pilots. They would test and assure that an aircraft was safe to fly. (10:06) • I had absolutely no intention of joining the military. I was into skating & surfboarding. (16:28) • I loved skydiving. I was with my peeps for the first time in my life. (23:23) • [Red ants] get real pissed off when you do 8 counts on top of them. (29:57) • [In Afghanistan rescue missions] you're out there rescuing kids and village elders. You want to let them know that you stand shoulder to shoulder with them. You're not gonna leave ‘em high and dry. (51:09) • It wasn't that I traded a life for a degree, but that how it felt. I promised myself that I would never allow my education get in the way of my job. (65:33) • One of the best things we learned was that one of the best medicines, sometimes, is lead. (70:12) • Most people don't know that 1003 Victor became known as Iraqi Freedom. (75:42) • I had the chance to coordinate about 1,000 rescue missions. Recovery missions as well as rescue missions. (76:05) • Reintegration is the process that returns people with homer, helping them transition back from captivity or isolation, back to their units and families so they can become “value added.” (78:18) • We're seeing Post traumatic stress in epic proportions. (79:26) • As a PJ, we focus on medical – combat medicine. (80:41) • I can't declare a personnel recovery event, because they're not my forces. (91:38) • It's important to know that a report has to come through a channel that is bonafide. (91:47) • [Operation Red Wings - After a series of signals and analysis, I thought] what I feel like is that I've got somebody on the run. And I'm really certain it's an American, because of where they're running and how they're running. And it gave me a confidence factor that I had at least one survivor. [97:34)

"Navy SEAL Down!" Those are words no soldier in battle ever wants to hear. In the case of this week's Team Never Quit guest, Jeff "Spanky" Peterson, the mission he had trained for as an HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopter pilot finally came into play in the mountains of Afghanistan. His mission: to rescue this podcast's host - Navy SEAL 10's Marcus Luttrell (code name: "Spider-Man") - after a dramatic & horrific ending to Operation Red Wings. Listen in to Jeff's detailed description of the events leading up to that harrowing rescue, and learn firsthand the degree of risk taken by U.S. soldiers on a day-in-day-out basis. The average American has no idea of the degree of "badassery" occurring in the theater of war by the U.S military around the world. In this episode you will hear: People call us heroes, but I don't think of it that way. “Pack a three-day bag. You're going up north.” A rocket-propelled grenade brought a Chinook chopper down, killing 16 men. Command picks up a clicking sound on a rescue radio frequency. My crew included a 57-year-old flight engineer, a gunner - a nervous University of Arizona student. My co-pilot was “Skinny”, 40-year-old seasoned by thousands of hours flying a Blackhawk. Are we looking for Americans, survivors, or is this a trap by the Taliban to draw in another chopper and blow it out of the sky? An elderly Afghani man arrives at a small Marine camp, with a note written by Luttrell. We have to fly into hostile Taliban territory to get him out. “It was dark and the weather was bad. It was a black abyss.” Except for the green glow of the rooftop position lights, we were flying black. "It was the Fourth of July out there." “We didn't even know where we were going and which strobe light was the right one. It was just like a flashlight from God.” Within 10 feet from the ground, the rotors kicked up a storm of dust, sending us into a total brownout. I couldn't see the wall, the ground, or the cliff. Both of ‘em were wearing Afghani man jammies. Before taking him aboard, we had to authenticate Marcus by asking him to say his dog's name and his favorite superhero. For the record, the answers are Emma and Spider-Man. When we got back, the only thing I wanted to do was talk to my wife, but we couldn't talk openly. All I could say was "Everything is good, "Everything is really, really good." "We stick our butts on the line to save people." "That's our combat mission.”

Note: The interview in this episode first aired in October of 2021 in Season 1, but it features a new gear spotlight. Don Bentley is a former U.S. Army Apache helicopter pilot who flew QRF in support of Operation Red Wings in Afghanistan. Launching with only a frequency, call sign and last known location of the four-man SEAL reconnaissance element, Don and the QRF flew into harm's way. One helicopter and the 16 warriors aboard would not make it home. This is a powerful conversation with someone who has spent years dealing with the emotional aftermath of that mission and who has learned to channel those feelings into his writing. Following his time in the Army, Don worked for General Electric before once again stepping up to serve as an FBI Special Agent focused on foreign intelligence cases and as an FBI SWAT Team member. Today, Don is the New York Times bestselling author of the Matt Drake series. His latest book in the series, Hostile Intent, released on May 3, 2022. He is also continuing the legacy of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan Jr. series. Zero Hour is on shelves now. You can learn more about Don at donbentleybooks.com and follow him on Twitter @bentleydonb. June 28, 2005. Four Navy SEALs were embedded in the Hindu Kush Mountains of Afghanistan. It was Operation Red Wings. The story of that fateful day has been told on this podcast on a few occasions. First, the perspective of Lt. Col. Jeff "Spanky" Peterson, who flew the PAVE Hawk that rescued the Lone Survivor, Marcus Luttrell. We've also heard from Mike Murphy's dad about his son's final acts, ultimately leading to Mike receiving the Medal of Honor. Today, we're joined by Matt Brady. He flew the Chinook helicopter that embedded those four SEALs, and when they were compromised, he was ready to go back in and get them. We pickup the story from there, on the 17th anniversary of Operation Red Wings. This is PICK UP THE SIX Podcast.
In this episode Brian issues you a 15 week challenge that will change your life. Every Memorial Day I've been committed to doing “The Murph” (https://briancain.com/blog/murph.html) as way to kick off this important day. The workout is in honor of US Navy SEAL Lt. Michael Murphy. I have also included this as part of my Monday morning routine as a way to kickstart my mindset for having a great week from Memorial Day to Labor Day. A 15 week challenge. Lt. Murphy was the officer-in-charge of a four-man SEAL element in support of Operation Red Wings, tasked with finding a key anti-coalition militia commander near Asadabad, Afghanistan. Murphy's men came under fire and Murphy bravely put himself in the line of fire to give his men a chance at survival. One of his team members, Marcus Luttrell, survived and tells the story in his book The Lone Survivor. Lt. Murphy was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor on October 27, 2007. By his undaunted courage, intrepid fighting spirit and inspirational devotion to his men in the face of certain death, Lt. Murphy was able to relay the position of his unit, an act that ultimately led to the rescue of Luttrell and the recovery of the remains of the three who were killed in the battle. This was the worst single-day U.S. Naval Special Warfare death toll since Operation Enduring Freedom began nearly six years ago. It was the single largest loss of life for Naval Special Warfare since World War II. The Naval Special Warfare (NSW) community will forever remember June 28, 2005 and the heroic efforts and sacrifices of these special operations warriors. We hold with reverence the ultimate sacrifice that they made while engaged in a fierce fire fight on the front lines of the global war on terrorism (GWOT). There is a workout named after Lt. Murphy that he would do while deployed. He called it the “Body Armor Workout.” It's now simply referred to as “The Murph” and consists of: 1 mile run 100 pull ups 200 push ups 300 air squats 1 mile run The goal here with this post is to encourage you to take on this workout as part of your Memorial Day routine or as part of your Monday routine. You can chop it up any way you want and take as long as needed to do the workout. No records being set here other than you vs. you and the battle that is uncomfortable consistency, also known as growth. When I first started doing this workout, I would run a mile, go to the office and then throughout the day do sets fo 5 pull ups, 10 push ups and 15 air squats and then finish the day with a mile run. It was never done for time, it was a great breakup of my Monday workday. On May 7th 2020 in honor of Murph's birthday which was May 7, 1976, I put on the stopwatch and got the following time: 1mile run (9:07) 20 sets of 5 pull ups, 10 push ups and 15 body weight squats (20:10) 1 mile run (8:40) Total time of 38:17. I encourage you to do this workout to help kickstart you mindset on serving others and becoming the best version of yourself in the process. This workout is sure to build calluses on your hands and build calluses on your mind by doing a workout in honor of Lt. Murphy that can be modified to fit your personal fitness needs. Brian Cain, MPM, the World's leader in Mental Performance Coaching brings you practical tips, techniques, stories, strategies, meditations and motivations every day that you can use to close the gap from where you are to where you want to be with The Mental Performance Daily Podcast. https://briancain.com/
In this episode, we welcome Robert O'Neill to the show. He is a retired Navy SEAL that deployed more than a dozen times and took part in over 400 missions across four different theaters of war. During his career, he was a member of SEAL Teams TWO, FOUR, and the legendary Development Group, aka DEVGRU, aka SEAL Team SIX. He was part of many well-known missions including the mission to rescue Marcus Lutrell, the Lone Survivor from Operation Red Wings, and the mission that saved Captain Richard Phillips after he was kidnapped by Somali pirates in 2009. Robert is best known for his participation in one of the most famous ops in US Military history called “Neptune's Spear” which took place on May 2nd, 2011 at a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. On that mission, he fired the shots that killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of al-Qaeda that carried out the 9/11 terrorist attacks. After he retired, he wrote a New York Times bestseller about his life and military experience in 2017 called The Operator: Firing the Shots that Killed Osama bin Laden and My Years as a SEAL Team Warrior. He's also the co-author of a new book out this week called The Way Forward: Master Life's Toughest Battles and Create Your Lasting Legacy, with co-author and retired United States Marine and Medal of Honor recipient, Dakota Meyer. In this interview, we discuss the funny story about how he ended up as a SEAL instead of a Marine, how SEALs are selected to become a member of SEAL Team SIX, what he was doing during the mission to save Captain Phillips, all of the information leading up to the bin Laden raid, what it was like killing the leader of al-Qaeda, how that mission changed his relationships with many of his SEAL brothers, what he thinks about the “code of silence” for Special Operators, his personal faith, how he feels about all of the killing he's done, the one killing that haunts him most, and much more. Let's get into it… Episode notes and links HERE Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Plot:-That is an old ass iphone.-Interesting way to start a movie, with the main character seemingly dying.-Really going for the emotional gut punch right off the bat, huh?-The fucking beagle... Sweet letter. Emotional gut punch, binding you to the character.-obviously John Wick has never had a puppy... Don't just leave it on the ground, not in a kennel.-Fitting the guys in the bmw are russian-So he goes to air field just to power slide? we obviously know nothing about him, yet. So what does he do? What happened to the dog during the power sliding?-The russian assholes are back; all for the car? Because they felt disrespected? Fuck those guys for killing the dog.-So John knows exactly where to go to find his car? Who's Vigo? The Carpathian? He did conquer the country of Moldavia.-Hey, look, it's the mayham guy... Guess that's apt for this movie.-Finally getting some back story on John... So he was an assassin. -So they're going to try and kill him before he can come for them... Obviously he's waiting on them.-It's increadable these guys only come for him one at a time... The knife fight was anxiety inducing.-Chat with the sheriff was funny.-What's with the gold coins?-Getting Wicks old friend to try and kill him is low-The pacing of the movie is bumpy. The fighting is fun, but all the other stuff is laboring.-So some werid hotel that everyone knows John and now a Matrix-esque club/bar thing?-How long does it take to drown someone? Always seems too fast in movies.-Interesting music choice in the club fight scene-Being thrown off the balcony, that wouldn've broken something... back, elbow, leg.-Nice phone call to the kid... Everything has a price. -Bourbon John drinks is blantons single barrel malt whisky-Willem Dafoes character is a shitty shot if he misses while John is sleeping. Interesting fight...-Didn't kill the girl assassin; guess there is some honor among assassins. -So he burns all the money... I would've taken a stack or two... Even though it seems he doesn't need it. -The car park gun fight... When he's hit by the car... Again, should've broken something. Concussion at least.-Cool they get to meet face to face, and John explains his anger... Don't really see that happening in most action moivies. Very emotionally driven.-That is ssecond shot willem dafoes character missed on an easy shot... is he trying ot subtly help Wick?-Can't imagine giving up your kid to be killed. ugh... almost feel bad for the guy.-I cant wait to watch this shitty kid get killed for being such an asshole.-Management gave him a dodge challenger/charger? I'd rather have the old camero or mustang.-So Dafoe was really... Da-ally... -Girl assassin still after him, even though the contract was pulled?-Uh-oh, they killed Willem Dafoe.-The girl assassin got hers... But killing her in the crossfire like that... Not too smart. What if one misses.-Its crazy, right when he jumps off the car, is when it starts raining.-Big fight wasn't that big... Few punches and a stab.-Back to the begninning, and he's alive.-So he steals someone elses dog? The end Top Five Trivia of the movie: Marcus Facts about John wick 1 When Kolstad was writing John Wick, he orginally titled the film Scorn then he decided to name his protagonist after his grandfather, John Wick, a businessman who owned Wick Building Systems in Madison, Wisconsin. 2 The Action scenes had to be muted. On location in New York City, Stahelski and Leitch had to exercise caution when it came to staging shootouts and car chases, and not just for safety. Their filming permit didn't allow for blank ammunition, so computer-generated muzzle flashes were often used. 3 Based on how many dynamic action scenes the John Wick movies include, it is pretty obvious that filming them must be somewhat arduous for series star Keanu Reeves. As it turns out, that was especially true for the actor when they filmed the nightclub scene he had the flu at the time and was running a 104° fever. 4 Michael Nyqvist, who played Viggo Tarasov, had to have 80 stitches put in his head after a stunt went wrong while filming. 5: Director Chad Stahelski was Keanu Reeves' stunt double in The Matrix movies The story is loosely inspired by an incident in Texas involving former Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell, who wrote Lone Survivor, about his fireteam's ordeal during Operation Red Wings in Afghanistan in 2005. Luttrell was given a yellow labrador puppy, whom he named DASY, after the members of his fireteam. On April 1, 2009, at about 1:00 a.m., Luttrell was awakened by a gunshot, and saw four men drive away. DASY was dead in his yard from a gunshot wound. He armed himself with two 9mm Beretta pistols and chased the men through four counties in his truck until police apprehended them. They taunted Luttrell, threatened to kill him, and indicated no remorse for their actions. They were later sentenced for animal cruelty. Luttrell stated later, "I spared them, because I've killed enough people already." TOP 5Stephen:1 Breakfast club2 T23 Sandlot4 Back to the Future5 Mail order brides Chris:1. sandlots2. On todays Zero Limits Podcast we talk to Dr Tony Brooks former US Army Ranger with 2nd Ranger Battalion who fought in Afghanistan early in the war and in Ramadi, Iraq. On June 28, 2005, a four-man Navy SEAL reconnaissance team under Operation Red Wings was ambushed in northeastern Afghanistan. A quick reaction force was dispatched. Turbine 33, carrying eight Navy SEALs and eight members of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade―careening the dual rotor Chinook toward the rugged peak of Sawtalo Sar. The result was the single deadliest incident in Special Operations history at the time there were no survivors. The mission soon turned to the recovery of a Seal Team better knows as The Lone Survivor, Marcus Luttrell in the mountains of Afghanistan. Tony has written a first-hand account "Leave no man behind" of the daring recovery of Turbine 33 and the subsequent search for the remaining compromised Navy SEAL recon team. Let's GO!
Don Bentley read his first Tom Clancy novel when he was 13 years old. This Army Veteran is now writing for the “Tom Clancy universe” with his first novel achieving best seller status. Both Don's grandfather and father served in the military. He was awarded an Army ROTC scholarship to Ohio State University and went on to fly Apache gunships. Don flew as part of the Quick Reaction Force on Operation Red Wings. Following his Army career, Don briefly tried the corporate world but found he wasn't quite ready for the cubicle life. He joined the FBI, serving on the Dallas office SWAT team. He then accepted an offer from some Army friends who founded a company that developed technologies for the special operations community. Don started his first novel in high school and his teacher told him he shouldn't give up on that dream. Enrolling in the Seton Hill writing popular fiction master's program proved to be a defining moment in his career. A contact he made at the Thrillerfest Conference told him “not this book but go home and write a better book.” Don took her suggestion and it became his first book sale. Don Bentley was finding success with his Matt Drake series when he was approached to join the Tom Clancy team to write “Target Acquired”, the latest novel in their Jack Ryan Jr. series. He says the closest equivalent would be a science fiction writer being asked to write the next Star Wars book. We also discuss Don's perspective on the withdrawal from Afghanistan and his opinion piece published in the National Review “Afghanistan – Was It Worth It?” While he believes our initial entry into Afghanistan was justified, he also emphasizes that democracy is not something that can be imposed and exported. “By God, if we would have just summoned the national will to do that, executing a noncombatant evacuation operation in Afghanistan is far from an unsurmountable task.” TAKEAWAY: “If you discount the 17 years and three books that didn't sell, I am an overnight success!”
UPCOMING EVENT on November 11th (Veterans Day): If you'd like to attend a Q&A session on November 11th with Combat Story's Ryan Fugit, please fill out this form (https://tinyurl.com/552ewmu5). Today we hear Part I of the Combat Story of Ray McPadden, a former Army Infantry Officer who survived four deployments that included leading troops in one of the most dangerous valleys of Afghanistan with the 10th Mountain Division and as a Ground Force Commander in the Ranger Battalion. Listeners really appreciate our interviews with Special Operators and it's easy to see why. Many listeners have asked to hear a few more stores from the conventional side of the house. Today's episode focuses entirely on the conventional side of Ray's career and fighting that his Battalion Commander at the time promised would be harder than anything he would go on to do in the Rangers. Ray's experience in the Pech and Korangal Valleys will be eye opening to many who had no idea forces were fighting in this unforgiving terrain and in these isolated conditions. Many have seen Restrepo and the Hornet's Nest and can appreciate just how difficult that fighting was. Ray and his men fought to build the positions and fortifications that would later become the backdrop of those movies and books. We use Ray's own fantastic book - We March at Midnight - as a guide to walk through the first half of his career and will pick up in part two with his time in the Special Ops community. I hope you enjoy this first of two Combat Stories and his fight in what was known as the “Valley of Death” as much as I did. Today we hear the Combat Story of Tony Brooks, a former Army Ranger with 2nd Ranger Battalion who fought in Afghanistan early in the war and in Ramadi, Iraq. Tony's first mission was significant, being tasked with the recovery of downed chinook helicopter, Turbine 33 and The Lone Survivor, Marcus Luttrell in the mountains of Afghanistan. His book, Leave No Man Behind, is all about this experience as the primary search and rescue element that catalogues the mission from hitting the ground, recovering bodies, and hunting for every last man to bring them home. In this episode, we also touch on the impact of a legendary man, soldier, Ranger, and American - Pat Tillman - who had a tremendous influence on Tony (and myself for that matter). After the military, Tony went on to become a licensed chiropractor. He married the woman he refers to in the book as ‘the Unicorn' who he met as a private while stationed at Fort Lewis. I hope you enjoy his Combat Story, and the mission to bring everyone home, as much as I did. #rangers #specialoperations #operationredwings #veteran #veterans #combatstory #tonybrooks #2ndrangerbattalion #rangerbatt #rltw Find Tony Online: Book Leave No Man Behind https://www.amazon.com/Leave-Man-Behind-Unrelenting-Afghanistan/dp/1635767350 Website https://www.drtonybrooksauthor.com/ Instagram @drtonybrooks https://www.instagram.com/drtonybrooks/ Facebook Dr Tony Brooks https://www.facebook.com/DrTonyBrooks/ Find Ryan Online: Follow on Instagram @combat_stories https://www.instagram.com/combatstory Follow on Facebook @combatstoryofficial https://fb.me/combatstoryofficial Send us messages at https://m.me/combatstoryofficial Email ryan@combatstory.com Learn more about Ryan www.combatstory.com/aboutus Intro Song: Sport Rock from Audio Jungle Show Notes 0:00 - Intro 0:53 - Guest bio 1:40 - Interview begins 2:06 - Pat Tillman - One of the greatest Americans of our generation 10:35 - Finding Purpose 13:19 - Why go to the Rangers? 17:00 - The Unicorn and the long play 20:00 - Parents played it neutral 23:50 - First time in Afghanistan 30:33 - Context for Operation Red Wings 37:15 - How did you feel going into your first mission? 40:07 - Fast roping onto target 49:25 - First objective - get to the crash site 58:20 - Recovering body parts 59:22 - Finding a wedding ring that meant so much more 1:06:27 - Next mission post-crash site recovery 1:13:50 - A screech you've never heard before 1:17:06 - Next mission is BDA 1:24:04 - My first experience of war was “sh*@” 1:26:28 - Finding Marcus Luttrell 1:32:13 - How close was the movie scenery (Lone Survivor) to reality 1:39:14 - Hilarious story of one of those “guys” in the unit 1:46:15 - What did you carry with you into combat? 1:47:31 - Would you go back and do it all again? 1:48:30 - How does Tony think about recent events in Afghanistan? 1:50:45 - Listener comments

Today we hear the Combat Story of Mike Hayes, a retired Navy SEAL Team and Special Operations Task Force Commander who fought in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo, and Bosnia over a 20 year career. His time in uniform brought to key points in U.S. military and diplomatic history, including intersections with Operation Red Wings, the Mersk Somali pirate kidnapping, and an international treaty negotiation with Russia. While in the Navy, Mike was one of the very few selected as a White House fellow, where he served under both Republican and Democrat administrations and as the Director for Defense Policy and Strategy at the National Security Council. Since leaving the military, Mike has gone on to senior roles at Bridgewater Associates, Cognizant, and VM Ware. Leave No Man Left Behind is a way of life in the Military, but we often don't hear the stories of those actions to rescue people behind enemy lines. Dr. Tony Brooks talks about the story to search for Marcus Luttrell who was featured in the Mark Walberg movie Lone Survivor in Afghanistan. We quickly dive into being a dad and how a lot like getting a satellite map before starting a mission the terrain is always different and has unforeseen challenges. And how this is so relatable to fatherhood and how the terrain of being a dad is different for everyone and always unpredictable. After enlisting in the U.S. Army in 2003 at the age of 21, Dr. Tony Brooks attended and graduated from Infantry and Airborne school followed by the four-week Ranger Indoctrination program, officially checking in to the 2nd Ranger Battalion in Fort Lewis, Washington `, in September 2004. He deployed to eastern Afghanistan in April 2005, based at Bagram Airfield. His first mission was Operation Red Wings II. Tony subsequently deployed to the Ramadi region of Iraq in 2006-07. He is now owner/operator of chiropractic clinics in Washington and Texas. He was featured on a Discovery Science channel episode of Black Files: Declassified and a Smithsonian Air and Space article as a subject matter expert on Operation Red Wings and is also featured in the Backbone docuseries. Tony and his wife Heidi have two children and are currently on their way to Montgomery, TX. Army Ranger Tony Brooks talks about why he joined, Ranger training and the reality of a recovery operation and secondary rescue efforts for Navy Seal Marcus Luttrell. On June 28, 2005, a four-man Navy SEAL reconnaissance team under Operation Red Wings was ambushed in northeastern Afghanistan.. The result was the single deadliest incident in Special Operations history at the time. Commanders called on the largest element of US Special Forces, the 75th Ranger Regiment. The rescue mission: Operation Red Wings II. Author Dr.Tony Brooks gives a first-hand account of the daring recovery of Turbine 33 and the subsequent search for the remaining compromised Navy SEAL recon team―one of whom was Marcus Luttrell, the lone survivor. The Rangers were up against lack of intel, treacherous terrain, violent weather, and an enemy that was raised to fight. Tony Brooks lived by the axiom, “Leave No Man Behind.” He is the first to tell the story other books and films have omitted, one of overcoming overwhelming odds to accomplish a mission: to bring every American soldier home. Tony talks with host Jim Fausone and paints a vivid picture of Army Ranger training and the strain of the mission.
Welcome back to the show! Today we are very excited to be joined alongside Dr. Tony Brooks. After enlisting into the US Army in 2003 at the age of 21, Tony attended and graduated infantry and airborne school followed by the four week Ranger Indoctrination Program (RIP) officially checking into the 2nd Ranger Battalion in Fort Lewis, Washington in September of 2004. He deployed to Eastern Afghanistan in April 2005 based on Bagram Airfield, his first mission was Operation Red Wings II. Tony subsequently deployed to the Ramadi region of Iraq from 2006 to 2007. He is now owner and operator of a chiropractic clinic and creator of Objective Healthy, a healthy lifestyle social venture to improve the health of veterans. He was featured on a Discovery science channel episode of Black Files Declassified in a Smithsonian air and space article as a subject matter expert on Operation Red Wings and is also featured in the Backbone Docuseries. Check out Tony's book, Leave No Man Behind to find out more about the heroic rescue mission known as Operation Red Wings II. This mission was designed and focused on sending in teams of Army Ranger's to locate and rescue Marcus Luttrell and his fallen men which became a Hollywood movie known as "Lone Survivor."
Zach has been a close friend of mine since the day we met. He is one of the kindest souls I have ever known. I look up to Zach, (metaphorically) because of his unconquerable spirit and uncompromising will to do things right. When I attended his retirement ceremony on June 25, 2021 (yes that is the memorial date of Operation Red Wings) all of my beliefs of who my friend is was validated by his teammates speaking of him in his presentation. Zach has defied the odds, he has come out on top after a long successful 20 plus year career in the SEAL teams. He has fought in the Global War on Terror, was one in one of the first SEAL platoons to invade Iraq, has successfully completed a white SOF rubber duck combat jump and on top of all of this has successfully retired from the teams still married to his Bride and kept his family intact. This episode is special to me because we recorded it one year ago. The reason we did it this way is that we planned on recording the second part a full year later. Stay tuned for the follow up episode.
EVENT: If you'd like to attend a Q&A session with Combat Story's Ryan Fugit, please fill out this form. Today we hear the Combat Story of Jon Macaskill, a retired Navy SEAL Commander turned mindfulness and meditation teacher. He spent a career in the Navy's Special Warfare and military Joint Special Operations communities and served in Iraq, Afghanistan, off the coast of Somalia, and in Panama. One story that Jon shares in this episode and which shows the burdens and gut wrenching aspects of combat, was his association with Operation Red Wings, which many will recall from the book and movie Lone Survivor. Jon is a Naval Academy graduate, holds a Master's degree from the Naval Postgraduate School, and, since retiring, runs a consulting business that brings mindfulness and meditation to high performing teams to aid in dealing with stress, anxiety, and depression, all while increasing focus, creativity, and productivity. He shares the benefits and opportunities both on the show and on his own podcast, called Men Talking Mindfulness, which, as Jon described it, is what happens when you combine a Navy SEAL and modern day Hippie! 28 June 2005: Operation Red Wings Today, we revisit Episode 2 with Lt. Col. Jeff "Spanky" Peterson (https://www.pickupthesix.com/post/podcast-2-lt-col-jeff-spanky-peterson-operation-red-wings) and Episode 25 with Dan Murphy, Lt. Michael Murphy's father (https://www.pickupthesix.com/post/podcast-25-dan-murphy-his-hero-son-murph-the-protector-1), and we pay tribute to the 19 warriors who made the ultimate sacrifice during Operation Red Wings. We went back and edited their interviews together to hear about heroes, and the mission to rescue the Lone Survivor Marcus Luttrell.
This week on Vill House Podcast we talk about Memorial Day and "Murph", the workout that is well known around the fitness community and usually done on Memorial Day. "Murph" is a workout dedicated to Medal of Honor recipient Lt Michael Murphy, a US Navy SEAL who died in Afghanistan during Operation Red Wings. The events of Operation Red Wings are documented in the book Lone Survivor written by Marcus Luttrell. We also touched a bit on our deployment experience and other Hero workouts dedicated to the men and women that paid the ultimate price. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Plot:Divers being pulled out of the water, asked questions. We watch men training, probably to become seals. Men working together, needing medical help, trainers training, some guys ringing the bell and leaving. Finally they're shown graduating, stating how they're brothers singing silent night. Based on a true story. A helicopter flies over a large basin, Mark Wahlbergs Marcus Luttrell bloody and being worked on. The black hawk lands at an air base, with a voice over about survival and pushing ourselves into dark corners. He speaks of fights as they work to revive him and a quick cut to three days earlier. Barracks living is shown, pictures, drawings, family, siblings, a picture of Ron Burgandy. Michael gets an email about a wedding present, a horse, so he goes to Luttrell for advice. After making sure the rest of the squad is up, a morning run. Axelson is messaging a woman, as the others run. Murphy wins by one second, a discussion of punishment and they decide to shave Dietzs head. Shane is anxious to go on an op. They're briefing about getting their targets, Shah, and waypoints named after beers. It flashes back and forth between briefing and the Afghans taking a man they think they helped Americans, and behead him. They finish the briefing with a lot of moving parts. The team is eating as Deitz tries to get help choosing a color with his wife/girlfriend. Patton enters into newbie intro: and does a hilarious dance routine. As they vote to push him through, he has to recite a SEAL shanty, as they are also shown preparing for the op. As he finishes, they're in the choppers heading towards the op. S: -Right off the bat... I love the camaraderie with these guys. The whole head shaving thing, the back and forth, "You are Mike Murphy"... Thats history. Legend even.-I like pacing of the story, already. It pulls you in, makes you feel part of the fun side and the "military" side.-Love the SEAL shanty The SEALS deploy down the rope and take positons. They confirm comms check, and move out from Budweiser. They hit Miller. Corona. Heineken. They're on a mountaintop, setting position, and their last way point, malt liquor. As they settle in, their AC130 cover departs. They move to phase 2 of the op, move to another positon to dig in and see the village better. They settle in and ID their target. Rick James, Bitch. Though they don't have comms, Deitz is to fall back and make it work, they're too exposed to take the shot where they were. Luttrell and Murphy discuss the Arabic horse, again. Axe is taking photos, drawing of the village. They rest. As they rest, Deitz hears a bells, and goats moving near them. It wakes the others. Then the shepherds appear and move though them... eventually they step on Luttrell. They come out and take them. They find a radio on one of them. They don't have coms and they're struggling on what to do. They decide to use an unsecured-satellite phone as Murphy calls it a cursed OP. Patton answers the phone, and asks for the skipper, so he goes to get him. But they lose the connection before they can speak. Murphy suggest 3 options, let them go, tie them up and go, eliminate them. They argue that if they let them go, Shah will leave too, but Luttrell doesn't want to kill them. Axe argues that Shah killed 20 marines last week, and its their job to stop him. They argue and Murphy finally comes up with a plan that the OP is compromised, they're going to release them and head up the mountain to get comms. They release them, and one kids starts heading down in a hurry, they start to move to the mountain top. As they move, Luttrell keeps looking back. The boy is shown quickly moving down the mountain, while the SEALS are shown slowly climbing up. They get to a false summit, and still can't get comms. Axe tells them this is a bad spot. Kristensen calls his commanding officer, but doesn't receive help. Axe sees movement, and you can start to hear voices. They shoulder and search, but nothing concrete. Murphy goes too recon, and sees about 20 dudes on the ridge above him. Goes back and tells Axe he's about to get contacted. They prepare for a fight. Luttrell sees the first one, and takes the shot. S:-Just their ragged breathing makes me nervous.-They seem to have a lot of low/angled shots... keeps it grounded/real.-I like the use of slow motion showing them going up the mountain and the kid running down. Luttrell sees the first one, and takes the shot. They're engaged, and move through the woods, taking down targets. Deitzs is shot in the hand, then Axe in the shoulder. One jumps on Axe, who he fights off, and kills. The taliban opens up with a belt fed gun, right as Luttrell says left is good, it's not, they push right and stay low. Axe moves and is hit in the leg, Lutrell is hit in the back/butt area. They're taking random bullets, foot, arm, they keep falling back. They jump off a cliff and violently roll down a hill as they're spot was hit with an RPG. They gather themselves, and check themselves. Murphy is shot in the foot, Deitz takes another to the shoulder. Deitz falls and Luttrell drags him. They recoup in some rocks, Luttrell shoves mud in Deitz leg. Murphy packs mud in his stomach. Deitz starts to lose it. The taliban move in and they move down more and jump off another cliff, and another violent roll down, but Luttrell dropped Deitz above. He's shown staring at Shah. They discuss how they can get Deitz, and how they can take the taliban on flat ground. The locals are going though all of Deitzs pockets, curiously. The remaining SEALS resolve to go back up and get him. One of the taliban pulls the colors swatch Deitz was looking at earlier, crumples it and throws it away. Murphy says he's going to make the satellite call, and motions towards a wide open rock, which Luttrell protests against. Murphy gives Luttrell his extra mags, they talk, and he tells him he's never out of the fight. He starts to move right to the rock as Axe and Luttrell cover him. Murphy makes it to the rock, bullets flying around him, and he calls the base for air support. He's peppered with bullets as Deitz looks at the crumbled paper, Murphy stands and is shot in the back several times, and falls. Deitz stares at the paper and his eyes shut, Murphy slumps. S:-Why doesn't Deitz have a silencer?-They're getting hit with 7.62 think it would do a bit more damage compared to their 556.-Jesus, the terror these guys must've felt, just trying to survive.-The tumbles down the mountains. All the sounds of the bullets whizzing and hitting off stuff, no wonder they were nominated for an academy award. Should've won. Damn.-My god, the way they just go over Deitz... picking through his stuff.-My God that was fucking emotional As the other team is about to head to help, they're grounded since there aren't apaches for cover. Axe and Luttrell regroup, and they discuss their situation. The attack continues. Kristensen in the chinook hears the apaches aren't coming and ask the pilots to get them on the ground. Axe and Luttrell are separated, but they see the chinooks and scream in happiness. Patton is about to be the first one out and he's overjoyed... When an RPG is launched, and hits the chinook, and it crashes. The second one pulls out without deploying help under heavy fire. They watch it leave and sink. Axe takes two more shots, is wheezing, and can't stand. He's surrounded and only has his pistol. He crawls to a tree, shooting until it locks back, he breathes a few final breaths, and watches a taliban shoot at him, until one gets him in the head. His head drops, then drops his pistol. Luttrell is looking for Axe, and tumbles down the mountain. He hides as the apaches check the area, but since they see no movement, and they are low on fuel, they head back to base. It fades to a sunset as Luttrell realizes he's on his own. He comes to, and starts to self asses. He pushes a compound fracture back into his shin. He then gets up and starts to walk. He finally comes across a creek and dives in. He comes up and there are men watching him, he threatens them with a grenade, but they seems friendly. When they hear shouting coming from the hills, the man gestures to help him. They pull him out and carry him to a village. Everyone is staring. In the house, the man shows him on a map where they are, while another man seems angry and is shouting. Luttrell pulls the grenade again, asking if he's taliban, they arguing back and forth. The second man leaves, and Lutrell gives him a map to take to the American base. A man sets out on foot. Men are going through the forrest looking for him; they arrive in the village and find Luttrell. They start to drag him to the same log used to cut a mans head off earlier...As he raises the machete to cut his head off, a gun fires and it's the man that helped aiming at the taliban. He says the American is his guest, and for them to leave. He asks if he will die for an American? Threatening him. He threatens they'll all be slaughtered, as the villagers with AKs watch them leave. He asks the boy for a knife, but the boy brings a goose. The man gets it for him. He uses it to get the shrapnel out of his leg, then passing out. They clean and clothe him. -I realize some of this is dramatized. BUT, my God. Just the unwillingness to give up.-Walking with a compound fracture to your shin... That's got to be impossible, right?-Again, the fear of being brought to that village, no one speaks english.-My god, recognizing that log and the blood on it...-Talk about tough as fuck, taking out that shrapnel with just the knife? The villagers are milling about and seem nervous. The taliban is showing in the woods gearing up, and the villagers wait. They wake him, bring him some water and food. As they talk, the attack begins, the room exploding. Luttrells letter has arrived to the base, and they send the calvary. Luttrell and the friend move, and they're separated, they find Luttrell, and the friend finds one of the leaders, struggles with him, and shoots him. Luttrell is getting beat, and choked, then the boy brings him the knife, which he uses to kill the guy. As the taliban begins to enter the town, the apaches, and AC130s show up, and drive them back. Ground forces move in, red smoke is popped, and they blackhawk lands. They search building to building, they find him and confirm it's him, and take him out. He wants the friend to come, but they don't let him. He thanks them, hugs the boy, and they go. We're basically back to the beginning of the movie, the voice over mentions multiple gunshot wounds. Wahlberg voice overs about brave men fighting and dying, building a reputation he has to uphold. But he died up on that mountain. That a part of him will be on that mountain that died with his brothers. But that part survived, and that no matter what, you're never out of the fight. His heartbeat starts, and it fades to black. Today we hear the combat story of Patrick Moltrup, a former Marine, Soldier, CIA, and Special Operator who served as a Navy Special Warfare Combatant-Craft Crewmen (or SWCC). Patrick served 25 years in the military, much of it in the Special Operations community. Patrick is one of the very few who has been a part of the Marines, the Army National Guard, Navy, and CIA. He spent most of his time with the Marines and SWCC where he worked on all kinds of boats from RHiBs to Mark Vs. As a side note, I was once picked up on these boats and, to this day, these rides remain some of the most fun I ever had, particularly the times at night (it actually reminded me of flying a Kiowa low level with the doors off)! Patrick was also a Navy Corpsman (medic) and attached to various units, including Gold Squadron, one of the assault forces SEAL Team Six, which we hear about in this episode. After leaving the military, Patrick collaborated with Jason Lilley, another former special ops warrior, to create Savage Actual, a YouTube channel and brand where Patrick and Jason discuss games, gear, and the military. They're now working on a video game themselves, have been sponsored by a craft brewing company, and more. I hope you enjoy Patrick's combat story as much as I did. Char Fontan Westfall joined The Protectors to discuss growing up in a Navy family, the sudden loss of her husband, finding the right help after loss, her faith, and a ton of other topics. About the book: A BEAUTIFUL TRAGEDY: A NAVY SEAL WIDOW'S PERMISSION TO GRIEVE AND A PRESCRIPTION FOR HOPE. On June 28, 2005, nineteen U.S. service members perished in the mountains of Afghanistan. The author's husband, Navy SEAL Jacques Fontan, was one of those killed. The mission, Operation Red Wings, has become one of the most well-known operations in contemporary warfare. Only one survivor lived to tell the harrowing story, resulting in books, speeches, and a blockbuster movie, Lone Survivor. Perhaps more importantly, the mission created much-needed public awareness and curiosity about the realities of war and survival. But there have been no books, speeches, or movies written about the other survivors: the women and children whose lives changed forever that summer day. While each widow and family processed the tragedy differently, Char became absorbed in anger and bitterness. Coping with grief was unfamiliar and scary to her. She hated God, whom she had trusted all her life, and blamed Him for losing her husband in such a violent manner. Before she knew it, she was on the front lines of a battle to regain her own life. When all seemed lost, the kindness and persistence of a neighbor brought renewed hope and restoration to her horribly broken heart in a surprising and refreshing way.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/theprotectors)
Once again, we step outside the bounds of the typical HAZARD GROUND guest to tell Char Fontan Westfall's story. Char is the wife of the late Navy SEAL, Jacques Fontan. Jacques was killed while attempting to rescue survivors of Operation Red Wings, the ill-fated reconnaissance mission in June 2005 in Afghanistan, that left one lone survivor. Char talks about receiving the news of her husband's death, and the long, difficult road she's traveled dealing with the pain, anger, and grief of losing a spouse in such a tragic way. Although not easy, she's handled it with grace and strength, and inspiringly found new hope in an unfamiliar world. Hear her and Jacques's story on this latest episode of HAZARD GROUND! Veteran's PATH enables returning veterans to rediscover meaning, purpose, and joy in their lives through mindfulness, meditation, and a safe community. Jon stepped into the Spotlight in this VeteranCrowd podcast episode. Operation Red Wings Jon Macaskill was serving in the Teams in Afghanistan in June of 2005 when Operation Red Wings was conceived and under way. June 28, 2005 turned out to be the one of the darkest days in the history of the Navy SEAL teams. Operation Red Wings, informally referred to as the Battle of Abbas Ghar was a combined / joint military operation during the War in Afghanistan in the Pech District of Afghanistan's Kunar Province, on the slopes of a mountain named Sawtalo Sar. As we spoke on this podcast, I recognized the immense impact this event had upon Jon - it was telegraphed in his appearance. Jon shared with me the pain of this event, his close ties to the SEALs lost that day, and the survivor guilt that he and many others carried home. He also shared his journey to recovery, and the discoveries he made along that way. Veteran's Path Now recently retired, Jon is relocating with his young family to Colorado Springs, and launching a new drive for veterans to help them recover through techniques that helped him - including meditation and mindfulness. Rather than pursue some of the “shiny things' offered transitioning special operations veterans, Jon sought to find his passion. It became clear to Jon he must help others as he had been helped himself. Jon decided to found a non-profit to teach these things, but luckily one already existed. As he searched, Jon found Veteran' PATH, a non-profit founded by two women in Berkeley, CA in 2008. Originally called “Honoring the Path of the Warrior,” this company had been introducing veterans to the life-changing and life-saving benefits of mindfulness and mediation. Jon walked me through the impact on his life and: Physiological changes to the brain How 100,000 years of evolution is hard to change, but needs to How military training for stress develops one way and meditation another How 200,000 transitioning veterans need this training every year to find their path and their “new tribe” Veteran's Path is kicking off a new program, supported by social media and delivered online this week in concert with eMindful. Accelerated by the Corona Virus, these online programs augment many of the services Veteran's PATH provided face to face in the past. What an incredible story of resilience Char has to share today. Her husband, Jacques Fontan, was one of nineteen servicemen killed when the helicopter he was in was shot down during Operation Red Wings in Afghanistan (from which the film Lone Survivor is based.) As a result, she has written a book, A Beautiful Tragedy, in which she speaks openly about the anger and bitterness that experience birthed, and her battle to regain her life, to heal within, and to serve others in the process.
U.S. Navy SEAL, Robert O'Neill served in more than 400 missions including the mission to save Captain Phillips during the Alabama hijacking, and Operation Red Wings in which O'Neill helped save Marcus Luttrell. Most notably, Robert O'Neill is known for killing Osama Bin Laden during operation Neptune Spear. Today we have a true american hero on the podcast. Robert comes on the podcasts and brings way more than just a story about killing one of the most evil men in history, he also brings some amazing insight about teamwork, and mindset. Robert walks us through Hell week and how he made it through the intense training to become a SEAL. and he even gives some draft advice for his favorite team, The Washington Redskins.
Before "Lone Survivor" - the story of Operation Red Wings as told by Marcus Luttrell, the only SEAL to survive that operation - there was ODA 525. Assigned a special reconnaissance mission inside Iraq on the eve of the Desert Storm ground war, the Green Berets of ODA 525 faced a moral dilemma of magnificent proportions when their hide site was discovered by local children. Poor intel on the hide site location put the men of ODA 525 in a populated area of the desert, where they would face overwhelming odds if discovered. CW2 Chad Balwanz, commander of 525 tells the story of how he and his men decided not to kill the Iraqi children who stumbled upon their hide site, only to take their chances fighting off a numerically superior force. This is one of the most impactful stories to come out of the Gulf War, and Balwanz tells it like it happened yesterday. Hear his amazing firsthand account of ODA 525 and the small team of Green Berets who took on Saddam's forces deep behind enemy lines, on this latest edition of HAZARD GROUND! Daniel Bell is back to dive deeper into his experience as a US Army Special Operations Combat Medic (160th SOAR/Night Stalkers). This time around, he unpacks the events of June 28th, 2005 in detail from his perspective – a day that now lives in infamy as 19 special operations servicemen lost their lives during Operation Red Wings (depicted in the book and film, Lone Survivor). As someone who experienced that tragic event in a deeply personal way, Daniel carried bitterness and anger in his heart towards all of those he deemed responsible. But over time, he would come to learn how to forgive – by receiving unfathomable forgiveness for himself from a gracious God. They discuss the film’s brutal depiction of conflict, whether this is biography or hagiography, before swerving off for an examination of Mark Wahlberg’s musical career. And, as always, there’s a review of the film’s exploding helicopter action which features a unique chopper fireball. Episode 72. Show notes Director: Peter Berg Cast: Mark Wahlberg, Ben Foster, Eric Bana, Emile Hirsch Plot: Biographical war drama, based on the eponymous 2007 non-fiction book by Marcus Luttrell. This week is all about MURPH. We are publishing early because we know a lot of people will be doing the workout on Monday. We get into the weeds with MURPH. Some of the myths, how to prepare and executing the workout. If you are doing MURPH this weekend or anytime definitely check this one out. Who better to give MURPH advice than from the guy who did it every saturday for a year?? LT. Michael P. Murphy (SEAL) was the officer-in-charge of a four-man SEAL element in support of Operation Red Wings, tasked with finding a key anti-coalition militia commander near Asadabad, Afghanistan. A fierce gun battle ensued on the steep face of the mountain between the SEALs and a much larger enemy force. Moving away from the protective mountain rocks, he knowingly exposed himself to increased enemy gunfire to radio his position to SOF Quick Reaction Forces. Though injured, LT. Murphy fought on, allowing one member of his team (Marcus Luttrell) to escape, before he was killed. For his selfless actions, LT. Michael Murphy was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor on October 27, 2007. We honor his sacrifice and memory though The Murph Workout.

GRP 82-Today marks the 12th anniversary of Operation Red Wings with what was at the time the worst loss of life for American forces in Afghanistan, and the worse loss of life for Naval Special Warfare in their storied history. Back on the podcast is retired U.S. Navy SEAL and New York Times bestselling author Kevin Lacz. Kevin is trained as Corpsman (Medic) and a Sniper. This places Kevin and those like him on opposite ends of the spectrum of combat arms in taking life on the battlefield and saving it. Chantel Taylor the co-host of the show served as a Combat Medic in the British Army. During a tour in southern Afghanistan, a convoy she was traveling in was ambushed. In the ensuing battle, Chantel became the first British woman in history to kill an enemy in close quarters. We talked about the psychology of killing in combat which Kevin touched on in his book. Below is an excerpt from the podcast: Kevin Lacz: I read "On Killing" prior to my first deployment. It made a mark in the back of mind. At the end of that first deployment, I was like ok I fall in that 2 percent crowd that can conduct business and keep going without the psychological and physiological changes that are experienced by most. In most memoirs, you won't read about how killing effects you. Most people just write about being a tough guy, but there hasn't been much of a psychological approach of having gone through combat and how it affects you. How you sleep at night. It's important to read about how you put your feet in front of you as you walk down the street, but also what you're thinking when you're about to squeeze the trigger and you have someone in the crosshairs. Also then 10, 20, 30 seconds, 10 mins, or even 3 years later how you react to that situation. That's what drives people to dig deeper and read more. Recorded earlier - 7/11/16 In this episode of The Willie Robertson Podcast, Willie and Johnny D are joined by Willie's good friend Marcus Luttrell, a former United States Navy SEAL who received the Navy Cross and Purple Heart for his actions in Afghanistan during Operation Red Wings. You might recognize his name from the movie Lone Survivor, a film based on the operation and his experiences with SEAL Team 10. In the podcast Marcus tells us about his strange eating habits, why his faith is important to him, and how he was a "late bloomer". Marcus also gives his thoughts on gun control following the recent mass shooting in Orlando.
GRP 46-First and foremost I want to send my deepest condolence's to the family of FDNY Battalion Chief Michael J. Fahy who was killed in the Bronx, New York today. Chief Fahy died responding to a reported gas leak from a house which subsequently exploded killing the Battalion Chief and wounding several others. He served for 17 years and was considered to be a rising star within the Fire Department. At the end of the episode, I added some audio as a small tribute. On for this episode is retired 3/75 Army Ranger Medic, and author Leo Jenkins. Leo served with Ranger Battalion for several deployments and played a role in the rescue and recovery effort of the fallen SEALs from the ill-fated Operation Red Wings. We discuss Leo's current lifestyle as a modern day nomad who travels from country to country mixing it up with the locals. It's a lifestyle and way of thinking Leo's embraced that really helped him deal with his post-military struggles. We discuss his involvement with a unique organization called The Team 5 Foundation which deploys to high-risk locations globally teaching medicine and treating the local population. Leo recently deployed with Team 5 and we discuss what that was like. Below is an excerpt from the episode. John: One of the pictures you took, to me was an iconic image showing Rangers taking IV fluid in a rush to find the missing SEALs from Operation Red Wings. You guys were on your movement moving through harsh terrain in very hot weather. Leo Jennings: I think I started lines on five, or six of our guys during those four days. These aren't guys coming off the couch. These are guys who maintain a very high level of fitness. Dudes were taking IV's but quitting was not an option. Guys really sucked it up because they knew that fellow U.S service members were out there in harm's way. Even if it was to recover their bodies those guys from those units will walk until their feet are bloody nubs. Let's keep this going until all of these Americans are recovered. Never shall I leave a fallen comrade to fall into the hands of the enemy. That's the most important thing. If you're a little bit hot or tired you suck that up and drive on.

Lone Survivor - Blu-ray Review 4.8 Stars (out of 5) - Rated R Synopsis Based on the failed mission "Operation Red Wings" which tasked four members of SEAL Team 10 on June 28, 2005 to kill Taliban leader Ahmad Shah. Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, Ben Foster, Emile Hirsch, Alexander Ludwig, Eric Bana Director: Peter Berg Blu-ray Release Date: June 3, 2014 Subtitles: English, Spanish Rating Overall rating weighted as follows: Audio 40%, Video 40%, Special Features 20%, Movie - its just our opinion so take it with a grain of salt Audio 5.0 Stars (out of 5) Dolby and DTS Demo Discs used as basis for comparison ● Subwoofer - 5.0 Stars ● Dialog - 5.0 Stars ● Surround Effects - 5.0 Stars ● Dynamic Range - 5.0 Stars English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1, DVS 2.0, Spanish: DTS Digital Surround 5.1 The surround effects are amazing, bullets whizz by your head, helicopter blades whip around the room, and debris fly in all directions. Sometimes they perform so well I couldn't tell if an airplane was flying outside or if it was the movie. Every once in a while it was hard to make out lines of dialog, especially if it was over the radio. The subwoofer gets a lot of action with sounds of gunshots, helicopter engines, and of course exploding grenades and RPGs. Movie - 4.0 Stars (out of 5) Review Lone Survivor is a gritty realistic movie based on real life action heroes in the Navy Seals. The movie does a great job of showing team brotherhood and the banter between them is entertaining and engaging. The tension and action feel real because you actually care about the characters and you know what you are seeing really happened. Just to prove how real the action is, several times during the movie my wife screamed, "No" at the TV. The movie has one of the best firefights I have ever scene on film. Not only did it sound amazing, but it was directed in a manner that made you feel like you were there. Overall, the movie is action packed and heartbreaking, but it's a good monument to the tough men who fought in "Operation Red Wings".
Based on the failed mission "Operation Red Wings" which tasked four members of SEAL Team 10 on June 28, 2005 to kill Taliban leader Ahmad Shah.
