Welcome to Hot Topics! Host Gabrielle Crichlow and guest Dr. George Maurer engage in a deep exploration of critical race theory (CRT), examining its foundations and implications in the context of education and systemic racism. Dr. Maurer presents a bold viewpoint, claiming that CRT serves as a Marxist ideology that seeks to dismantle Western societal structures, including capitalism and the nuclear family. He expresses concerns about the "psychology of shame" that CRT may impose in educational settings, arguing that it fosters division among students of different races. Dr. Maurer warns that CRT is often disguised as "ethnic studies," leading to its controversial implementation in schools.Contrastingly, he advocates for teaching history in a factual and age-appropriate manner, focusing on the complexities of slavery and racism without promoting feelings of shame. Dr. Maurer stresses the need to empower marginalized students with pride and self-confidence rather than a narrative that suggests the system is inherently rigged against them. The conversation also addresses significant societal issues such as the achievement gap, police brutality, and mass incarceration, with Dr. Maurer calling for a more nuanced and evidence-based discussion. This episode encapsulates the polarized debates surrounding race, education, and social justice, encouraging listeners to consider various perspectives on these critical topics.Who is Dr. George Maurer?Dr. Maurer is an award-winning broadcast journalist with more than 35 years of experience. Former CIA Director and United States Secretary of Defense Robert Gates joins One Decision's Christina Ruffini and former MI6 Chief Sir Richard Dearlove to discuss global security challenges facing the West and its allies. Gates describes the challenges as "more perilous than we've probably faced since World War II." They also discuss what's at stake for the Taiwanese, Russia's strategy in Ukraine, Iran's brittle regime, far-right populism in Europe, and whether America should build an Iron Dome. Plus, Sir Richard shares an anecdote from former UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
President Joe Biden made a surprising admission at the Democratic National Convention last night. No, it wasn't his declaration that selecting Kamala Harris was “the best decision” he ever made. After all, that fits a party-line that implausibly describes her as “the most qualified person to be president.” Biden acknowledged, however, that he had made “a lot of mistakes.” That's not exactly news. For example, former Obama Secretary of Defense Robert Gates famously observed that Biden's been wrong on “nearly every major foreign policy and national security issue over the past four decades.” But a new impeachment report from three House committees documents that Joe Biden and his family decided to accept at least $27 million dollars from foreign governments, including Chinese intelligence. Ignoring the betrayal of our country can only encourage others aligned with the CCP to do it, too. This is Frank Gaffney.
Critical Race Theory In Our Schools Dr. George Maurer part 2Critical Race Theory, or commonly referred to as CRT, has been in the news a lot recently. One thing is certain, CRT has totally infiltrated our education system… When confronted, education leaders will deny it is impacting education – and in a lot of cases, they blatantly say it is not being taught at all… As a parent or grandparent who is trying to find out about what IS being taught on Critical Race Theory, it's almost impossible to find the information you are looking for. Why? Because the powers that be do not want you to understand what it is. It takes someone who knows how to navigate those dangerous waters to be able to go in, find out what's happening and then come back and report on it. That is what our guest today has accomplished. Dr. George Maurer is an award-winning broadcast journalist with more than 35 years of experience. He's a retired Air Force Master Sergeant who deployed to Iraq during the Global War on Terrorism. He also served overseas in Japan, Korea, the Portuguese Azores, and Alaska. For his final assignment, he served in the Pentagon Press Briefing Room alongside all major news organizations. He's interviewed top defense officials such as Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Michael Mullen as well as rock stars like Sammy Hagar and Pat Benatar. During his career, he covered a wide range of major events such as the first military tribunals of enemy combatants at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and the Super Bowl. He is also the author of an expose' book titled, “Critical Race Theory in Your School.” In this book, he provides YOU, the average parent or grandparent, vital information to identify IF CRT is being taught and what you can do about it! Amen! In this book, he provides you some “key words” to be watching out for and how you can then use that information to your advantage. To share some great insights into exposing CRT and what you can do to fight it in your school district, help me welcome to the program, Dr. George Maurer. This is part two to a great conversation with Dr. Geroge Maurer! One section of your book jumped out at me that I'd like to share. You were discussing an interview you watched with a Dr. Cardona on a television program called, “The View.” On this show he was asked, point blank, if CRT was being taught at any grade level in the public school and he answered “no.” He was then asked if it was being taught “anywhere.” You said as he answered the question “NO” he broke the gaze with the host and was looking down and to the left. You picked up on that as being deceptive. As a retired police officer, I've had the opportunity to take several interrogation classes and have conducted numerous interrogations at one level or another over my time in law enforcement. I can definitely say, if someone is “trying to remember” something… they will usually look “up and to the right.” And, if they are trying to deceive or avoid the question, you were correct in your assumption that they will look, “down and to the left.” This is NOT 100% accurate… in law enforcement, we call it a “clue” they may not be telling the truth… and it keys us into an area that we need to ask more probing questions, etc. In your book, “Critical Race Theory in Your School,” you discuss this is not a new tactic but actually started with Rush Limbaugh and Lars Larson radio shows where these talking points would be called in by liberal operatives. Explain that information for us… Some school districts will say they are not teaching CRT, but

Dr. Maurer, thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to join us today. I do appreciate it. First question I always start with is this… other than that brief information I just shared, can you tell us in your own words, “Who is Dr. George Maurer?” How did you get involved with this CRT stuff in the beginning? What was the spark that started all of this, with the book and everything? You share about CRT in the classroom, did you also see it in the military? How did this get started? I know it had to come from the politicians and the teachers unions, but WHY? A listener emails Michael about their son who in 2016 thought Donald Trump wasn't conservative enough. He comes home after graduating this year and has turned into a Communist. The parents want to know what books they should read or give to him that might help them discuss issues with him; or, that might even change his mind. We get a plethora of suggestions.Joe Biden vindicates for Secretary of Defense Robert Gates' statement that Joe Biden has been wrong on every single foreign policy issue for the past four decades.
In this episode of The More Freedom Foundation Podcast, your hosts Rob and Ruairi continue to rip apart an outrageous article by former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, recently published in Foreign Affairs. Gates argues for a more assertive stance against China and Russia, advocating increased military spending and a return to a Cold War-era bipartisan approach. Join us as we scrutinize Gates' arguments and offer a critical analysis of his viewpoints. We'll break down the article's key assertions, shedding light on the potential pitfalls and consequences of such an aggressive strategy. Does Gates' call for a more confrontational approach truly serve the best interests of the United States, or does it risk escalating tensions with the world's major powers? As we explore the nuances of this complex issue, we question whether Gates' assessment of Xi Jinping's and Vladimir Putin's leadership and ambitions accurately reflects the current global landscape. We'll challenge his views and offer a more balanced perspective, one that takes into account the complexities of international relations in the 21st century. Patreon Website Books Twitter TikTok

As of March 2022, Johnson also hosts a classic R&B radio show on FM public radio station WBGO, 88.3FM, based in Newark, NJ. As Secretary of Homeland Security, Johnson was the head of the third largest cabinet department of the U.S. government, consisting of 230,000 personnel and 22 components, including TSA, Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Services, U.S Citizenship and Immigration Services, the Coast Guard, the Secret Service, and FEMA. Johnson's responsibilities as Secretary included counterterrorism, cybersecurity, aviation security, border security, port security, maritime security, protection of our national leaders, the detection of chemical, biological and nuclear threats to the homeland, and response to natural disasters. In three years as Secretary of DHS, Johnson is credited with management reform of the Department, which brought about a more centralized approach to decision-making in the areas of budgets, acquisition and overall policy. Johnson also raised employee morale across the Department, reflected in the September 2016 Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey. As General Counsel of the Department of Defense, Johnson is credited with being the legal architect for the U.S. military's counterterrorism efforts in the Obama Administration. In 2010, Johnson co-authored the report that paved the way for the repeal of the Don't Ask, Don't Tell by Congress later that year. In his book Duty, former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates wrote that Johnson "proved to be the finest lawyer I ever worked with in government - a straightforward, plain-speaking man of great integrity, with common sense to burn and a good sense of humor." According to published reports, Johnson provided the opinion that was the legal basis for U.S. special forces to enter Pakistan to kill Osama bin Laden on May 1, 2011. Johnson is a 2022 recipient of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, a 2021 recipient of the American Lawyer's Lifetime Achievement Award, as “an American statesman [who] has devoted his career to the public interest,” and a 2018 recipient of the Ronald Reagan Peace Through Strength Award, presented at the Reagan Presidential Library, for “contribut[ing] greatly to the defense of our nation,” and “guiding us through turbulent times with courage and wisdom.” In 2020 the Chief Judge of New York State asked Johnson to conduct a comprehensive review of equal justice in the New York State courts. On October 1, 2020 Johnson issued a public report with his findings and recommendations, all of which the Chief Judge has committed to adopting. Johnson has debated at both the Cambridge and Oxford Unions in England, and in November 2019 was conferred honorary life membership in the Cambridge Union. Johnson is a graduate of Morehouse College (1979) and Columbia Law School (1982) and the recipient of 13 honorary degrees. Johnson married “the girl next-door,” literally, Dr. Susan DiMarco, in 1994. Susan is a retired dentist, a volunteer at the southern border and in numerous other activities, and, at the request of the U.S. Navy, is the sponsor of the Virginia-class submarine USS NEW JERSEY (SSN-796). In February 2023, Johnson and his family history were profiled on an episode of PBS' Finding Your Roots. For Jazz fans, tune into “All Things Soul with Jeh Johnson", once a month on Saturdays from 8 – 10 am on WBGO 88.3 FM. On this episode, Secretary Johnson shares his one way ticket to Birmingham, Alabama on May 20, 1961, to resume the Freedom Rides, and highlights the role they had in the US Civil Rights Movement. During the course of our conversation, he also covers his family history as unearthed by Henry Louis Gates on Finding Your Roots, how he approached managing the Department of Homeland Security, concerns about cybersecurity and AI and his love for classic R&B which he features on his radio show.

Washington Post columnist David Ignatius speaks with the 22nd U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and Stefanie Tompkins, the director of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) on strategies to galvanize a new generation of public servants and instill a “start-up” kind of enthusiasm.
Retired four-star general Stanley A. McChrystal has lived a life associated with the deadly risks of combat. He was once called “one of America's greatest warriors” by Secretary of Defense Robert Gates. From his first day at West Point, to his years in Afghanistan, to his efforts helping business leaders navigate a global pandemic, McChrystal has seen how individuals and organizations fail to mitigate risk. Why? Because they focus on the probability of something happening instead of the interface by which it can be managed. He is a transformational leader with a remarkable record of achievement. General McChrystal is widely praised for launching a revolution in warfare by leading a comprehensive counter-terrorism organization that fused intelligence and operations, redefining the way military and government agencies interact. In this episode, General McChrystal shares lessons learned over the course of his extensive career and shares leadership nuggets of wisdom. He is the author of the bestselling leadership books, My Share of the Task, Team of Teams, Leaders, and his latest book Risk: A User's Guide which we dive into today. In Risk: A User's Guide, General McChrystal offers a battle-tested system for detecting and responding to risk. Instead of defining risk as a force to predict, McChrystal and coauthor Anna Butrico show that there are in fact ten dimensions of control we can adjust at any given time. By closely monitoring these controls, we can maintain a healthy Risk Immune System that allows us to effectively anticipate, identify, analyze, and act upon the ever-present possibility that things will not go as planned. For most leaders, failure is not a matter of life or death. But for some, making life-or-death decisions is part of the job. What can high-risk decision-making teach us about the more ordinary and conventional risk leaders assume every day? What roles do preparation and instinct play in this process? How can leaders become better at conquering a fear of failure in order to make hard decisions? In this episode, Host Gautam Mukunda speaks about risk and high-stake decision-making with two remarkable individuals who have spent their lives doing the impossible in the face of enormous danger. General Stan McChrystal is a retired four-star general, former Head of Joint Special Operations Command in Afghanistan, and the founder and CEO of the McCrystal Group. Alex Honnold is a professional adventure rock climber, who is known for his free solo ascents, most notably El Capitán as documented in the movie Free Solo. “The more often you encounter the unexpected, the more comfortable you feel with the unexpected in general. You can prepare as much as you can, but you kind of know that some random thing is always going to go sideways, but then the more often that you encounter those kinds of sideways challenges and manage them… I think you build some confidence to just know that when a situation arises you'll figure it out quickly” — Alex Honnold “Nothing helps innovation like necessity.” — General Stan McChrystal Follow @GMukunda on Twitter or email us at WorldReimagined@nasdaq.com Books Referenced: Alone on the Wall, by Alex Honnold Risk: A User's Guide by Stanley A. Tetlock The Right Stuff by Tom Wolfe Guest Info: Alex Honnold is a professional rock climber whose audacious free-solo ascents of America's biggest cliffs have made him one of the most recognized and followed climbers in the world. A gifted but hard-working athlete, Honnold is distinguished for his uncanny ability to control his fear while scaling cliffs of dizzying heights without a rope to protect him if he falls. His humble, self-effacing attitude toward such extreme risk has earned him the nickname Alex “No Big Deal” Honnold. This Sacramento, California-native's most celebrated achievements include the first and only free-solos of the Moonlight Buttress (5.12d, 1,200 feet) in Zion National Park, Utah, and the Northwest Face (5.12a) of Half Dome (2,200 feet), Yosemite, California. In 2012 he achieved Yosemite's first “Triple Solo”: climbing, in succession, the National Park's three largest faces — Mt. Watkins, Half Dome, and El Capitan — alone, and in under 24 hours. In 2017 Alex completed the first and only free-solo of El Capitan's “Freerider” route (5.13a, 3,000 feet), a historic accomplishment that has been hailed by many as one of the greatest sporting achievements of our time. The story of this feat was told in the Academy Award-winning documentary, FREE SOLO. Whether climbing with a rope or without, Honnold believes climbing is a fantastic vehicle for adventure, an opportunity to seek out those high-test moments with uncertain outcomes in which you're forced to push through to survive. Though Honnold often downplays his achievements, his rope-less climbs have attracted the attention of a broad and stunned audience. He has been profiled by 60 Minutes and the New York Times, featured on the cover of National Geographic, appeared in international television commercials, and starred in numerous adventure films including the Emmy-nominated “Alone on the Wall.” He is the founder of the Honnold Foundation, an environmental non-profit. In this week's Reagan Forum podcast we go back to June 21, 2021 for our virtual conversation with former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates. Robert Gates is an American intelligence analyst, and university president who served as the 22nd United States secretary of defense from 2006 to 2011. He was originally appointed by President George W. Bush and was retained for service by President Barack Obama. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a Second Lieutenant from 1967-1969. Secretary Gates joins us today for a conversation on the paperback release of his latest book, Exercise of Power: American Failures, Successes, and a New Path Forward in the Post-Cold War World.
This week, A'ndre and Ryan speak with Anja Manuel, former diplomat and advisor on emerging markets, about the rise of India and China in a conversation largely based on her critically acclaimed 2016 book, This Brave New World: India, China, and the United States. Anja contextualizes the conversation by discussing how India and China's 'glorious distant past' coupled with a more recent history of foreign exploitation has shaped each country's self-perception in the 21st century. Anja provides an updated assessment on whether an optimistic path for cooperation between the United States and China exists, and whether the U.S. is underestimating India. We then dig into the key challenges facing each country, while providing a template for how and why the U.S. might want to involve itself in issues such as income disparities, corruption, demographic shifts, climate change, and anti-democratic trends. Anja also talks China's Belt and Road Initiative and whether India has a comprehensive global economic strategy. We conclude the wide-ranging conversation with a key question: does the international order and the global rules have to be changed to accommodate India and China's rise?Anja currently serves as a principal of Rice, Hadley, Gates & Manuel LLC, a strategic consulting firm that helps US companies navigate international markets, which she co-founded with former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, former National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley and former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates.
The former Secretary of Defense for Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama has strong opinions on the United States' place in the world. That America has been an exceptional power in the years following the end of the Cold War is of little doubt. With the fall of the Soviet Union, the United States stood alone in its power to influence global events. Yet, in recent years that power appears to have waned some as adventurism abroad and partisan gridlock at home have tarnished the country's global reputation and tested the trust of its allies. China, meanwhile, has emerged as an economic force that is coalescing power while building allyships of its own through the Belt and Road Initiative. For this week's episode of the Crosscut Talks podcast, former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates discusses what the rise of China means for American exceptionalism and how the country might best navigate the new global terrain. --- Credits Host: Mark Baumgarten Event producers: Jake Newman, Andrea O'Meara Engineers: Chi Lee, Resti Bagcal, Viktoria Ralph

She was also the United States Undersecretary of Defense for Policy from 2009-2012 under President Obama, where she served as a principal advisor to Secretaries of Defense Robert Gates and Leon Panetta. At the time of her confirmation, Michèle was the highest-ranking female official in the Pentagon. “We can't afford to divorce ourselves from the world.” While isolationism has its merits, we should be using our presence to shape the direction of the world, instead of enacting large-scale regime change. We need a core set of principles as it relates to countries like Russia and China. Smart or smarter engagement is the way forward, not lack of engagement. What region worries Michèle the most? The Asia Pacific and Indo Pacific. This area will have the greatest impact on our economy, as our prominence as their primary security partner clashes with China's position as the primary trading partner. ————————————————————————— To learn more about this episode, including podcast transcripts and show notes, visit *salt.org/talks* ( http://salt.org/talks ) Moderated by Anthony Scaramucci.

Alston & Julius Ramsay are two brothers and a writer/director duo. The Ramsay brothers made their feature debut with Midnighters, a high octane indie thriller released by IFC Midnight in 2017. Their most recent feature is The Current Occupant is the latest entry in Blumhouse's Into the Dark series on Hulu. For the uninitiated, Into the Dark is a Black Mirror-like series of self-contained feature horror films produced by Blumhouse where each episode thematically represents a different holiday. The Current Occupant was themed around Independence Day and tells the story of a man committed to an asylum who believes himself to be the president of the United States. The Current Occupant is a fascinating and highly entertaining institutional horror thriller and is available on HULU today! The Ramsays have a varied and fascinating background: Alston, was a former speechwriter for multiple prominent political figures like Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, General David Petraeus, and Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson. While Julius edited for multiple TV shows including Battlestar Galactica and has directed for Blumhouse's The Purge TV series and multiple episodes of The Walking Dead. The Ramsays were a whole bunch of fun to talk to and their latest feature, The Current Occupant, is now streaming on HULU. Here are some key takeaways from this conversation Julius & Alston Ramsay: Move forward as if. Alston mentioned a golden production tactic someone gave him which was to put a hypothetical date on the calendar for principle photography and simply move forward as if that's when you will begin shooting. When making independent movies, there are so many variables, so many that most directors get overwhelmed and feel the need for everything to be figured out before they can even begin principle photography. What few people tell you is that the best way to do this is to work the other way around. Come up with your ideal date, and then back all of your production plans into it. There's real brilliance to this idea, because it not only psychologically orients you towards shooting, which is very powerful in and of itself, but this tactic makes your project sound more real to the producers you're pitching because you have an actual date. So pick a date and mark it on your calendar - even if you have to reschedule, it will be a starting point that can give you the momentum you need. There's horror all around you, take notice. Alston spent a lot of time working in politics as a speechwriter, and because of that, brought a breadth of perspective and experience into The Current Occupant. His work history gave the movie an authenticity because it was partially based on his personal experiences which is where some very rich horror concepts can come from. If you're an aspiring filmmaker who has a non-film related day job, take heart because the idea for your movie might be right in front of you. Waiting tables? It's been a while since there was a good restaurant horror movie. Working in an office? Take a look at Belko Experiment, American Psycho, Mayhem, and technically Cabin in the Woods. Don't discount your current experiences as time wasted if you're not making movies yet - dig deep into these experiences because they just may have the germ of a great horror concept in them. Collaborate with a sibling, or someone like a sibling. I have spoken to multiple filmmaking duos and they are often childhood friends or siblings. When picking collaborators, it's critical to remember that you will inevitably get into conflict, therefore, having a strong rapport, and the capacity to fight and rapidly recover is mission critical. Where it may not always be realistic to pick a sibling to make a movie with, as Alston said, pick someone who you would want in your foxhole, because making a movie is going to war. Therefore, it's important to be on board with someone who will have your back when the going gets tough, because it inevitably does throughout the course of indie filmmaking. So pick your production partners accordingly because when the chips are down you'll need someone who cares. ----- Produced by Simpler Media
Hugh Hewitt invites Former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates to share about his new book "Exercise of Power: American Failures, Successes, and a New Path Forward in the Post-Cold War World."
Former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates says that America overuses (and often MIS-uses) the military to achieve its strategic goals while neglecting other (and often better) non-military options. He discusses how Congress and the last 5 Presidents have allowed many of those non-military instruments of power to wither and die in the three decades after the Cold War. He suggests that the United States needs to be "less monastic and more Madison Avenue" in how we talk about the good we do around the world and that Presidents need to make an effort to convince the the American people to take a broader, more longterm view of what is in the US national interest. He criticizes President Trump’s threat to use regular military forces to squelch Black Lives Matter protests and explains that a heavy-handed approach to peaceful protesters may be a gift to authoritarian regimes around the world. Plus Robert Gates says it may be time for the US to focus on more realistic goals with North Korea, he elaborates on the sometimes mischievous nature of the National Security Council, and he weighs in on whether he believes President Trump's claims that his former National Security Advisor John Bolton is a "traitor" and "liar." United States Marine General; Former U.S. Secretary of Defense In response to the Coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak, this program took place and was recorded live via video conference, for an online audience only, and was live-streamed from The Commonwealth Club of California in San Francisco on June 23rd, 2020.
Since the end of the Cold War, the global perception of the United States has progressively morphed from dominant international leader to disorganized entity. Robert Gates, defense secretary under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, asserts that this transformation is the result of the failure of political leaders to understand the complexity of American power, its expansiveness, and its limitations. Sec. Gates makes a clear case that the successful exercise of power is not limited to military action, but should encompass other facets, including diplomacy, economics, strategic communications, intelligence, technology, ideology and cyber. It should also require learning—and abiding by—the lessons of the past, and avoiding the misuse of power. Join Sec. Gates and former Secretary of Defense James Mattis as they discuss the future of U.S. national security. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

You might not see the connection between biophilic design and national security, but today's guest outlines how communities like Serenbe are imperative in our global defense strategy. We're excited for you to hear Monica Olsen and Steve Nygren's conversation with Colonel Mark "Puck" Mykleby. Puck talks about meeting Phyllis Bleiweis and coming to Serenbe, where he bonded with Steve Nygren over biophilia and pushed for the establishment of the Biophilic Institute. Puck also talks about the economics of sustainability and how his company, Long Haul Capital Group, is putting dollars toward propelling walkable communities. As he says, our smart growth at home can become our smart power abroad.Definitions, People, & Organizations MentionedSerenbe Fellows https://www.serenbeinstitute.com/fellowsPhyllis Bleiweis https://www.linkedin.com/in/phyllis-bleiweis-296a5713/Congress for New Urbanism https://www.cnu.orgSpecial Operations Command at the Joint Chiefs of StaffAdmiral Michael Glenn Mullen https://www.jcs.mil/About/The-Joint-Staff/Chairman/Admiral-Michael-Glenn-Mullen/Captain Wayne Porter - The National Strategic NarrativeCongresswoman Jane Harman https://www.wilsoncenter.org/person/jane-harmanNational Security Act of 1947 https://history.state.gov/milestones/1945-1952/national-security-actDepartment of DefenseCIAGeorge Frost KennanBiophilic InstituteAlexis de Tocqueville https://www.britannica.com/biography/Alexis-de-TocquevilleThe New Grand StrategyCharles Darwin's Survival of the FittestPresident Barack ObamaSecretary of State Hillary ClintonSecretary of Defense Robert Gates https://www.defense.gov/Our-Story/Biographies/Biography/Article/602797/ The New America Foundation https://www.newamerica.orgCase Western Reserve University https://case.eduThe New Grand Strategy https://thenewgrandstrategy.comAdam Smith (supply/demand principles)Long Haul Capital GroupOregon Museum of Science & Industry https://omsi.edu"Fintech" definitionWater in Flint, MichiganRodale Institute's SE Research CenterChildren & Nature NetworkDavid W. Michèle Flournoy is the former Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, the seventh-ranking official in the U.S. Department of Defense, and in that role served as a principal advisor to U.S. Secretaries of Defense Robert Gates and Leon Panetta from February 2009 to February 2012. Shew is currently the Co-Founder and Managing Partner of WestExec Advisors. On the show, Michèle discusses speaking truth to power, the importance of service in leadership, and what’s currently at stake right now. She shares her experience of co-leading President Obama’s transition team at the Defense Department. She also discusses her experience as the principal advisor to the Secretary of Defense in the formulation of national security and defense policy, the role think-tanks play, and guidance for the next generation of leaders. Key Takeaways [5:35] Great leaders know they don’t know it all. They listen to people around them for other ideas and ways to make things better. [7:40] Some of the most rocky transitions in office have been between Presidents of the same party. Michèle discusses the respectful and thoughtful manner in which President Obama’s team transitioned, and how it set the tone for the whole environment. [9:46] Often times in a bureaucracy what holds us back is a perverse incentive structure, risk aversion, and resistance to change or innovation. Michèle found when she focused on a Human Capital strategy that invests in people, it translated into incredible improvements in performance. [12:17] Leaders must be able to identify where the zero defects approach is needed, and where we can experiment and afford risk. [16:29] Though progress has been made, Michèle would like to see Defense and National Security represent the statistics of America in terms of gender and ethnic representation. [18:36] The Think Tank world is an important place for leaders to be developed and trained, and also for those who need a space to reflect and create new ideas before they go back to public service. [21:00] Michèle was asked by Former Defense Secretary James Mattis to be his Deputy Secretary of Defense. She turned it down because she was concerned she was not aligned with the current administration. [23:51] When making big decisions, stay grounded in your principals and values. [26:02] Michèle shares an example regarding the Bin Laden raid of speaking truth to power, and that it is a sign of intelligence to be able to change your mind after careful consideration. [31:45] Michèle would love for there to be an expectation of service in any form for the younger generation. It is up to senior leaders to create more avenues and an expectation of service. [33:07] Service is a bond of commonality that we should be nurturing in the country. [38:28] Each of us has an opportunity to move forward and create positive journeys if we are willing to do the hard work. Quotable Quotes “Listening is the highest form of respect.” “Did I have to work extra hard to make sure that women had opportunities to mid management and senior levels? Yes.” “Being grounded in your values and having certain principles that guide you is very important.” “It’s imperative a leader hears dissent and a different point of view.” “What’s at stake is who we are as a country.” Twitter Maxwell Airforce Base Duty: Memoirs of a Secretary at War TLP 053: Special Forces Resourcefulness Parallels the Spirit of American Entrepreneurialism TLP 101: General Stanley McChrystal on What Connects Us Spirit of America The Mission Continues West Exec

William Moulton Marston, a scholar from Tufts and Columbia universities, the inventor of Polygraph (lie detector) technology stepped out of academia and into the world of pop culture in the October 1941 edition of All Star Comics. Marston was a sort of Alter Ego to the marketing genius of Stan Lee who fascinated boys across America with heroes like Captain America, the X-Men, Hulk, and Iron Man. Marston feared that comic books were becoming too violent with their, “blood curdling masculinity”. So to curb the descent to depravity Marston conceptualized a new character - Wonder Woman. This woman would be stronger than her male counterparts, from an Amazon Island was uninhabited and uninfluenced by men. She would even employee Marston’s polygraph technology with her golden lasso of truth. Wonder Woman became an icon of the feminist movement throughout the 50’s and 60’s. Not surprisingly, Wonder Woman re-emmerged last year to become the highest grossing superhero origin film of all time. What is happening in our culture to create an environment for Marston’s Diana to re-emmerge? Perhaps at no time since the 60’s has there been more bewilderment and confusion over the role of women in our culture. ILLUSTRATION: The “Boy Scouts of America” have been caught in the quagmire of this cultural confusion. The concept of scouting began in 1907, when Robert Baden-Powell formed the organization as an avenue for the development of “muscular Christianity” among boys. In the mid 1900’s Boy Scout organizations around the world began to move away from distinctly Christian lingo in it’s handbooks in preference of a more broadly Deistic language. In 2005 accommodations were made for those who were Muslim, Wiccan, and others according to the Times of London “Scouting is available to all faiths and, therefore, must take account of the different religious obligations of its members,” according to new scouting guidelines. In 2015 the role of openly gay scouts and scout masters came into question. As former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates announced to the National Meeting of B.S.A., “we must deal with the world as it is, not as we might wish it to be.” Recently, the B.S.A. dropped the word, “Boy” from it’s branding - opting for the more gender neutral, “Scouts” and opening the door for girls and to participate in the organization. ILLUSTRATION: The #metoo movement has radiated through Hollywood annihilating producers and movie stars in it’s wake. News icons like Matt Laurer and Tom Brokaw were not immune, now Politicians are feeling the effect. ILLUSTRATION: Churches aren’t immune either. Just this week - a coalition of Southern Baptist women released a open letter to the trustees of Southeastern Seminary regarding sermon excerpts taken from that institutions President Dr. Paige Patterson. Someone had uncovered statements he made some sermons, some over 14 years ago and compiled them to create a narrative that seems indefensible. IN THIS IS THE CULTURE to which we desperately need a new and better Wonder Woman. That is what God gives us in Proverbs. Before introducing us to her - Solomon Introduces a couple of other women to which we may compare and contrast Pro. 31. The Foolish Woman Proverbs 14:1 (NASB95) 1 The wise woman builds her house, But the foolish tears it down with her own hands. The Hebrew Word for Foolish Means- Thick, dull and sluggish or lazy to the things of God. She is bent on destruction. She tears down her home with her own hands. Notice what marks the life of a foolish woman. The Foolish Woman is Boisterous Proverbs 9:13 13 The woman of folly is boisterous, What does it mean to be boisterous? Constant commotion and turbulence. It literally means to murmur in the heart. Or to murmur under one’s breath. It was for murmuring in the dessert that God ended the life of his own people. Paul wrote the Church at Phillipi and warned them to do all things without murmuring or complaining. God didn’t tolerate it in His people and you shouldn’t tolerate it in yourself. This girl finds the pattern of her life to be one of chaos. She is the quintessential drama queen. Never learning how to lead a quite life in all godliness. Beware Parents; the boisterous, murmuring daughter will one day be what God calls the foolish woman. She will take that same foolishness into her job, her family, your grandkids will be raised by that kind of a mother. Not only is she boisterous… The Foolish Woman is Naïve Pro. 9:13b She is naive and knows nothing. Now that doesn’t mean that she literally knows nothing.. she knows how to tie her shoes, she knows how to work a cell phone, But this is speaking of a girl or a woman who is void of weighty knowledge. Someone said, There are no lighthouses in the harbor of her soul. She finds herself regularly thrown against the rocks of turbulence. She does not think deeply She does not examine carefully. We have said in this series - the Wise Woman can zoom out and see how decisions effect many people over a long range of time… but the foolish woman only sees the immediate effect of her decisions, what is right in front of her. As a result she is a victim of the person, the philosophy, the theology with the greatest emotional sway. It’s not to be that way among you ladies, you are to know those things that are worth dying for, and thereby those things that are worth living for. You learn to discriminate between that which is of temporal value and that which is of eternal value. Learn the difference between the sacred and the common. The foolish woman is boisterous, she is naïve… The Contentious Woman Proverbs 19:13 13 b. the contentions of a wife are a constant dripping. The Word Contentious Means – One given to strife, one easily angered, never content and never satisfied. This girl will argue for the sake of arguing. Invariably the outcome is misery for those around her. THOUGHT - I’ve met gals like this before and I thought to myself , I’m glad I’m not married to her. But someone is. ILLUSTRATION; During the Korean War, the Koreans would take our POW's, isolate them in a room and they would let water drip because they knew that 24 hours a day. Constant dripping could break them down emotionally, and breaking them emotionally, they could get anything they wanted to out of them. God's Word says a quarrelsome daughter is that kind of a thing. A constant dripping. Living with a contentious woman is like getting nibbled to death by a Chihuahua. Chuck Swindoll said, It is my observation that all things being equal contentious mothers raise contentious daughters. Compare and Contrast the Foolish and Contentious Woman to… 3. The Excellent Woman We are all very familiar with Prov. 31, but you may not know that in the Hebrew it was written in the form of an Acrostic, working it’s way through the Hebrew Alphabet verse by verse. This is a clue that it was written to be memorized and taught to the youth of Israel. Also, notice it’s from the Mother of Lemuel… that is significant you and need to remember it. Proverbs 31:10–31 (ESV) 10 An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels. This wise mom is creating a challenge for her son. She knows something about male psychology. Men love a challenge, and men love competition. They prefer the elusive, the rare, the valuable. The wise mother of Lemuel peeks his interest in her description of her preferred daughter in law by talking about her rarity. 11 The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain. 12 She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life. One of the great needs in a man’s life is certainty. Lemuel’s mom is saying - you can trust this woman. Notice also the scope of her, “doing good” to her husband - all the days of her life. That means as a high school student, before she ever meets her husband - she is doing him good. How? Perhaps she prays for him, perhaps she prepares for him, and no doubt she stays pure for him. 13 She seeks wool and flax, and works with willing hands. 14 She is like the ships of the merchant; she brings her food from afar. 15 She rises while it is yet night and provides food for her household and portions for her maidens. Do you see what that is saying... notice she has maidens... that is she has employees. Now the maidens are supposed to rise while it’s still dark and feed her. But she’s taking care of them. If your concept of a Godly Woman is an uneducated, un-engaged woman, staying home barefoot and pregnant, cleaning house all day - YOU NEED TO READ PROVERBS. This woman has a staff. This woman generates a profit. Notice she’s also engaged in real estate and a winery… 16 She considers a field and buys it; with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard. This woman knows the real estate market, she’s able to discern when to buy and when to sell. She’s an “IMPROVER” she buys a field - the field becomes more fruitful. No doubt she adds value to her friends, her employees, her family as well. One of the ways you know you’ve found this sort of woman - look around her. Things around her are getting better. An excellent woman is like an antidote against the perpetual decline of things in this sin cursed world. 17 She dresses herself with strength and makes her arms strong. This woman is marked by confidence and strength. She is a strong lady both internally and externally. 18 She perceives that her merchandise is profitable. Her lamp does not go out at night. This is not to say that she never sleeps, although it may seem that way for many of your women. This is a Hebrew quoloquialism that means in effect, “The sun never sets on her work”. If I said, “the sun never sets on the ministry of FBC... I am saying, we have work all around the world... even while you sleep, your dollars are funding ministry. This woman’s life is that way. She’s making a difference not just in her family, but beyond her family to the world. She’s not only working hard, she’s working smart. 19 She puts her hands to the distaff, and her hands hold the spindle. She is personally engaged in the production of her enterprise. She oversees from the 30,000 ft level and the 3ft level. She’s working. 20 She opens her hand to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy. This woman realizes that God has blessed her, but she is not blessed simply to enjoy life - but she is blessed to be a blessing. She is engaged in philanthropy. She’s working to help those less fortunate than herself. 21 She is not afraid of snow for her household, for all her household are clothed in scarlet. 22 She makes bed coverings for herself; her clothing is fine linen and purple. This speaks of the fact that she knows that the needs of household are met even when Murphy comes to visit. Murphys law - anything that can go wrong will go wrong. But she knows that her family is safe, because she has planned ahead. 23 Her husband is known in the gates when he sits among the elders of the land. Now this verse has a couple of implications. This woman didn’t settle for just any old man. She married a true Godly leader. Her man is known in the gates. But another way to look at it is this - because of HER influence, the husband has grown, he’s changed, he’s arisen as a leader over time. 24 She makes linen garments and sells them; she delivers sashes to the merchant. She delivers sashes to the merchants, not to the buyer… think of it - she is at the Wholesale level of the fashion industry. When I read this I thought of Sara Blakely, the Founder and Inventor of Spanx was born in Clearwater, FL. She became the first female billionaire to join the Gates-Buffett Giving Pledge and the youngest woman in the world to earn 1 billion dollars on her own. 25 Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. One commentator said, “If honor be your clothing, the suit will last a lifetime; but if clothing be your honor, it will soon be worn threadbare” Notice also, she laughs at the future - she is not given over to worry and fret. She confidently looks at tomorrow and laughs… not smiles… laughs….that is the essence of confidence. 26 She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. This woman isn’t an accident - she understands how her decisions have led to a favorable outcome and she is willing to share her information. She teaches others. 27 She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. She is a household executive. Now remember, she has servants. But she doesn’t delegate everything to others, she is hands on. 28 Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: 29 “Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.” 30 Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Notice that the fear of God is NOT a deficit that hinders her from accomplishment. Rather, it is the source of the strength that allows her to go further and accomplish more. 31 Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates. THIS WOMAN: Is not foolish - she sees the big picture and proceeds accordingly. She doesn’t have time to be boisterous. She’s experienced too much to be naive. She would she be contentious? She and her husband are both working in the same direction. Some of you read this chapter and find it very discouraging. Perhaps you feel that you are so far from the mark that she sets. Perhaps you messed up, you’ve sinned, perhaps you made some huge mistakes. Well let me tell you something that might encourage you. The best scholarship suggests that Lemuel referenced in this passage is actually the mother’s pet name for Solomon. If that’s true and she is Solomon’s mother… what do we know about Solomon’s mom? Her name was Bathsheba.

For the first time in eight years, we are watching a new team take over the national security infrastructure. Now is a good time to review, "Who is who in the zoo" and what exactly they do. In the alphabet soup of organizations, how do the NSC, NSA, CIA, DOD, DIA, DHS and DNI all work together - and in competition - to enhance national security? Though everyone likes to bash bureaucracies, they are important and are only as good as those who populate and lead them. Our guest for the full hour to help us navigate the swamp the "blob" lives in will be Loren DeJonge Schulman.Lauren is the Deputy Director of Studies and the Leon E. Panetta Senior Fellow at the Center for a New American Security. She most recently served as the Senior Advisor to National Security Advisor Susan Rice. Before returning to the White House in 2013, she was Chief of Staff to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs. She served as Director for Defense Policy on the National Security Council staff from 2011–2012 and prior to that as a special assistant to Secretary of Defense Robert Gates. Abraham Lincoln, Nelson Mandela, Steve Jobs, Oprah Winfrey – some of the greatest leaders of all time. But what makes each of these individuals such a remarkable leader? And how do we define great leadership? We may be apt to hold on to the traditional notion that leadership is defined by rank and order. But your position or title alone does not qualify you as a veritable leader. Think about it, how many CEOs are there in the world that hold a position of great power, but have a nominal impact on their employees? How many managers aren’t even respected by those that they manage? Even brilliant and innovative individuals can stumble when it comes to finding their voice. Because leadership is not defined by a position, nor it is even defined by intellectual prowess or natural talent – leadership is the skill of influence, something that you can use to impact the thoughts, feelings, emotions and actions of others. And it is the most important skill that anyone of us can master. Yet as important as leadership is, in today’s world, it’s a rarity. And that’s not because there is a scarcity of natural born leaders. In fact, leadership can be cultivated. Many of us suppose it’s an innate talent, but anyone can become a leader in something that they decide to become masterful in. You could be the leader in your business, the leader in your class, the leader in your own family. You could even decide to become the leader of your own life. There are different types and different styles of leadership. But real leadership starts with the capacity to discipline your disappointment. Because along any journey worth taking, you are going to encounter obstacles, and odds are, you are going to fail. But if you can find a way to connect to yourself, and connect to others, and if you can find a way to break through those challenges, you can become a true leader. And when you strive to serve the greater good – something greater than yourself – that’s when you can become a truly great leader. Tony and Mary Buckheit recently sat down with General Stanley McChrystal and Chris Fussell to discuss what great leadership looks like today and how to cultivate an infrastructure for success in any organization. General Stanley A. McChrystal has been called “one of America’s greatest warriors” by Secretary of Defense Robert Gates. A retired four-star general, he is the former commander of U.S. and International Security Assistance Forces (ISAF) Afghanistan and the former commander of the premier military counter-terrorism force, Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC). He is best known for developing and implementing the current counter-insurgency strategy in Afghanistan, and for creating a comprehensive counter-terrorism organization that revolutionized the interagency operating culture. General McChrystal now serves as a senior fellow at Yale University’s Jackson Institute for Global Affairs where he teaches a course on Leadership in Operation. And he co-founded the McChrystal Group in January of 2011 where he is currently a partner. McChrystal Group’s mission is to deliver innovative leadership solutions to American businesses to help them transform and succeed in challenging and dynamic environments. Chris Fussell is a former Navy SEAL Officer, where he spent 15 years leading SEAL elements in combat zones around the globe. He served as Aide-de-Camp to Lieutenant General McChrystal during McChrystal’s final year commanding JSOC, becoming an integral part of the team that made the Special Operation’s transformation into a successful, agile network possible. Fussell is also a partner at the McChrystal Group, where he leads the McChrystal Group Leadership Institute, where he brings his Special Operations experience and his expertise in leadership development to organizations of all sizes. In addition to being a New York Times bestselling author, he regularly does media interviews, gives keynotes speeches, and speaks to business leaders at roundtables and panels. In this episode of the podcast, you will hear Tony, General McChrystal and Chris delve into the reasons that leadership no longer comes from a command and control model, but from creating relationship-based change throughout the entire organization and by empowering every single person that is part of your business. And they examine the importance of building trust, remaining flexible, practicing empathy, and creating a culture of shared consciousness. By breaking out of the traditional sense of leadership, business owners can create a more cohesive and more powerful team that is not only more unified, but more efficient, and ultimately, more effective.
Farewell to President Obama My wife and I were talking this past weekend about our daughter’s birthday coming up when it suddenly dawned on me that the Obama Presidency is coming to an end. “Hard to believe” I told my wife… “It feels like late January already”… “Yes, time flies when we are having fun” she remarked. At some point I became nostalgic of the Obama years. So much happened in our lives during the past eight years, with news about the President seemingly always in the background. I was reminded of all the criticism and sharp questions I heard. The political opposition seemed to blame just about everything on the President, and students of metaphysics seemed concerned about the changes to what makes America great. I thought of recording a few comments and sending to students only. Then it occurred to me to make some notes first, and eventually the video was born. These remarks are not intended as a rigorous historical account of events or of conditions in Europe before America was established, but the general tone of the video is largely correct. The message I wanted to convey to students was one of forgiveness, which is based on refraining from judgment, and gratitude, which are both keys to happiness. Here are the notes in case you prefer to read them. The video can be seen here: https://youtu.be/jnac4XGpRQE Because of our position as a therapist and professor people often ask our opinion on a number of topics, such as in this case, president Obama and his Presidency We do not think it would be appropriate to judge the President, or any of his decisions really, because we are not aware of all of the information and details available to the President when each decision was made We often feel that others make mistakes or do bad things; but when we take the time to examine all the information available to that person at the time the decision was made, we are often surprised to discover, even if only within the privacy of our minds, that, given the exact same scenario, we would not have been as effective as the person we so eagerly judged I admire Secretary of Defense Robert Gates not only for his many accomplishments but also for the person he is. To me Secretary Gates comes across as a highly effective professional with a conscience and a heart. Secretary Gates provides a unique insight into the Obama presidency and the person of the President himself in his book Duty. Reading Duty I was sensitized by the feeling that President Obama is a good man, who means well, and does want what he honestly feels is best for the country It is within human nature to inquire into what is best for the country, and disagreements are inevitable. One angle seldom explored is whether the country as whole is serving the spiritual purpose for which it was founded The notion that the United States and all other countries exist for a spiritual purpose surprises some folks, but a country is nothing more than a venue through which a group of souls can evolve spiritually. Over time, countries that no longer fulfill the evolutionary needs of the souls therein incarnated cease to exist, and indeed new countries flourish in their places There are many ways of understanding the purpose for which the United States of America was founded, but we can begin by asking what most people refer to when they speak of the Great American Experiment Considerer what life was like in Europe in the 16th, 17th and 18th Had you not been born to royalty, would you have had a chance to even learn to read? Would you have had your most basic needs, such as food and shelter met? Had you been killed in the streets, would anyone have cared? Would your life have mattered? What chances would your babies have had of surviving past the first year? Would you have participated at all in the organization of your community? Before the United States existed, and for most of human history, there were two classes of people: royalty and peasants. While those born into royalty often squandered wealth and lived in extreme luxury, peasants lived on the edge of physical survival. But this exaggerated difference in economic status was not the problem that the Great American Experiment attempts to solve. You see, royalty produced nothing; peasants grew, transported and prepared food. Peasants built, cleaned, operated and maintained the lavish palaces for royalty to enjoy. In essence, peasants produced and royalty managed. This social structure survived for millennia, and still survives in some areas, because one idea permeated all of society: that God himself had ordained monarchies to rule over people who could not rule themselves. Even if it had been true that people just could not rule themselves at some point in time, requiring a ruling class to control their lives, over time this arrangement became abusive. Now one class had become lazy and confortable, literally over the backs of the many. So now, management, government, no longer had to do with the will of the people, with what was good for the people, instead now royalty’s main concern was its preservation and the prevention of revolts, which result when people think and desire to grow Historians tell us that the main reason every attempt to colonize America before Jamestown and Plymouth Rock failed miserably was because “rulers” would come from Europe intending to manage the few people they could bring, but simply refused to work. That was the prevailing attitude at the time this great American experiment was being launched The need to work, and differences in economic status between royalty and peasantry were not the propelling forces behind the American ideal: the ability to control our destiny was what fueled the Revolution and has defined the American Spirit since the beginning… in other words: freedom In order to potentiate a group of people, known as Americans, into freedom, the freedom to pursue their happiness, a government was established. This government began not by outlining people’s duties towards the state but instead outlining the limits of government intrusion into people’s lives. Truly a government for the people by the people. A land where a middle class is not only possible but actually has the opportunity to evolve It is true that a reasonably high standard of living is needed for spiritual growth, since there is nothing spiritual about misery. Furthermore, as Dr. Abraham Maslow eloquently explained, people need their basic needs met before they can really work on their self-actualization, their spiritual growth. So America was created to be a land where basic needs could be met in less than one third of one’s day, leaving a day for the Lord. This requires a good economy and certainly hard work from all. Affluence and the ability to generate wealth is what make America the land of opportunity, but opportunity for what? In Dr. Maslow’s terms, opportunity for self-actualization; opportunity for spiritual inquiry and growth; opportunity to design and pursue one’s own destiny and happiness. The opportunity to generate enough to be able to share with those in need Considering that how we treat one another is the best gage of spiritual growth, we can use levels of social, racial, political and economic tension as a measure of the nation’s fulfillment of the purpose for which it was founded If war, famine and suffering are decreasing, the country is fulfilling its purpose. If the people feel that they are growing, if the people feel that they are achieving more, becoming more, and most importantly, giving more, then for sure the country is fulfilling its mission. On the other hand sometimes a nation needs changes in circumstances in order to appreciate its own merits. Never before the idea of a government by the people for the people had been proposed or attempted. A government by the people for the people gives us the best opportunity to pursue our happiness, our self-actualization, our spiritual ideals As President Kennedy famously said, let’s not ask what our country can do for us; let’s ask what we can do for our country. Let us not ask what presidents can do for us; let us ask what we can do for ourselves, for our families and for one another. Let us not ask whether a departing president has been good or bad; let us thank that person for his service and sacrifices. Let us rejoice in the fact that we are all part of the Greatest Experiment in history; we have the opportunity to assemble, to communicate, to learn from one another. We have the opportunity to explore our own nature, and develop our own destiny. We have the opportunity to pursue our happiness, and we have the ability to be generous with others. We are Americans yes, but we are human beings, all created equal, all on this Earth to live love and learn. God bless us all
The Hillary Clinton email controversy began in March 2015, when it became publicly known that Hillary Clinton, during her tenure as United States Secretary of State, had exclusively used her family's private email server for official communications, rather than official State Department email accounts maintained on federal servers. Those official communications included thousands of emails that would later be marked classified by the State Department. Debate continues as to the propriety and legality of various aspects of Secretary Clinton's arrangement. Some experts, officials, and members of Congress have contended that her use of private messaging system software, a private server, and her deletion of nearly 32,000 emails that she and her lawyer regarded as private, violated State Department protocols and procedures, as well as federal laws and regulations governing recordkeeping. In response, Clinton has said that her use of personal email was in compliance with federal laws and State Department regulations, and that former secretaries of state had also maintained personal email accounts. Nearly 2,100 emails on the server have been retroactively marked as classified by the State Department. They were not marked as classified at the time they were sent. This includes 65 emails deemed "Secret" and 22 deemed "Top Secret". Government policy, reiterated in the non-disclosure agreement signed by Clinton as part of gaining her security clearance, is that sensitive information should be considered and handled as classified even if not marked as such. After allegations were raised that some of the emails in question fell into this category, a probe was initiated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) regarding how classified information was handled on the Clinton server. The controversy continues against the backdrop of Clinton's 2016 presidential election campaign and hearings held by the United States House Select Committee on Benghazi. In 2008, before Hillary Clinton became Secretary of State, Justin Cooper, a longtime aide to Clinton's husband, former President Bill Clinton, managed the system. Cooper had no security clearance or expertise in computer security.[36] Later, Bryan Pagliano, the former IT director for Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign, was hired to maintain their private email server while Clinton was Secretary of State.[37][38] Pagliano had invoked the Fifth Amendment during congressional questioning about Clinton's server. In early 2016, he was granted immunity by the Department of Justice in exchange for cooperation with prosecutors.[39][40] A Clinton spokesman said her campaign was "pleased" Pagliano was now cooperating with prosecutors.[41] As of May 2016, the State Department remained unable to locate most of Pagliano's work-related emails from the period when he was employed by that department under Secretary Clinton.[42] Security experts such as Chris Soghoian believe that emails to and from Clinton may have been at risk of hacking and foreign surveillance.[43] Marc Maiffret, a cybersecurity expert, said that the server had "amateur hour" vulnerabilities.[44] For the first two months after Clinton was appointed Secretary of State and began accessing mail on the server through her Blackberry, transmissions to and from the server were apparently not encrypted. On March 29, 2009 a â??digital certificate" was obtained which would have permitted HTTPS encryption.[1] Former Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency Michael T. Flynn,[45] former United States Secretary of Defense Robert Gates,[46][47] and former deputy director of the Central Intelligence Agency Michael Morell[48][49] have said that it is likely that foreign governments were able to access the information on Clinton's server. Michael Hayden, former Director of the National Security Agency, Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence, and Director of the Central Intelligence Agency said "I would lose all respect for a whole bunch of foreign intelligence agencies if they weren't sitting back, paging through the emails." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hillary... Some people argue that the global balance of power is shifting away from the North Atlantic and toward the Asia-Pacific as countries such as India and China gain economic, military, and political influence. India and China may appear to be developing new international systems – for example, through the AIIB – that could threaten the post-war order developed by the United States and Western Europe. However, long-simmering tensions between India and China make it clear that they do not form a united bloc, and present an opportunity for the United States to play a role in re-shaping the balance of power throughout the world. Given the considerable differences arising between New Delhi and Beijing, and the fact that each country confronts enormous domestic issues including poverty, corruption, and environmental degradation on a huge scale, how can the United States manage its relationships with the two rising Asian powers? For the third installment of our 50th Anniversary series, China and the World, Ms. Anja Manuel, author of This Brave New World: India, China and the United States, described the Sino-Indian relationship and the role the United States may play in creating a new balance of power with both India and China. Moderated by National Committee President Stephen Orlins, the program was held on May 9, 2016 in New York City. Anja Manuel is co-founder and partner, along with former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, former National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley and former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, of RiceHadleyGates LLC, a strategic consulting firm. Anja Manuel is also a lecturer in the International Policy Studies Program at Stanford University where she designed and teaches a course on U.S. foreign policy in Asia. From 2005 to 2007, Anja Manuel served as special assistant to Under-Secretary for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns at the U.S. Department of State. In this role, Ms. Manuel was responsible for South Asia policy, Congressional outreach and legal matters. She was part of the negotiating team for the U.S.-India civilian nuclear accord, helped to secure passage of the accord in the U.S. Congress, and was deeply involved in developing U.S. policy toward Afghanistan and Pakistan.
This week’s episode focuses on US foreign policy and national security. The United States is currently facing many foreign policy and national security challenges: ISIS continues to threaten security and regional stability, the Syrian civil war looks no closer to resolution and is now creating a refugee crisis that extends well into the European Union; and the United States’ nascent nuclear deal with Iran still faces many hurdles. Amidst all of this, the candidates are gearing up for the US presidential election next year. World Affairs' CEO Jane Wales sat down with former US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates to get his take on this complex situation. After speaking with Secretary Gates, she continued the discussion of US foreign policy and national security with Michele Flournoy, co-founder and CEO of the Center for a New American Security.
