Federal and state support for higher education and university policies has come under attack during the second Trump Administration. And for Indiana University students who are participating in the Civic Leaders program, the political landscape is much different now from when they entered college. Watch: How Trump's college crackdown is raising concerns about academic freedom | PBS News HourUniversities and research institutions have had their funding cut or threatened and what is being taught and who is being enrolled have come under scrutiny. At IU, the state barred the university from providing any state funds to support the prestigious Kinsey Institute, which researches sexual behavior.Even how members of IU's Board of Trustees are selected has changed during their time in college. Previously, three of the nine trustees were selected by alumni voting and six were chosen by the governor. Now, because of an amendment to the state budget, the governor has been given control of all nine seats. The ACLU of Indiana has sued to block the takeover of the board, but IU has already canceled an election next month to fill a vacated seat. It's among a number of lawsuits that have been brought against the state and federal governments this year. Most have been against the Trump executive orders or actions by DOGE, which have affected long-standing departments and agencies. Read more: New lawsuit argues Trump and DOGE's government overhaul is unconstitutional On this week's Noon Edition, we'll discuss how the political and economic landscape has shifted and how college students are planning to tackle an uncertain future. This is part two of our conversation with JP Davis, a social entrepreneur nicknamed "The Pride of Kentucky" and an uber-fundraiser for good causes. JP has agreed to support Kristi's non-profit K9s4COPS and K9s4KIDS, which deploys canines and their handlers to protect schoolchildren, hunt down narcotics and dealers, and combat crime across the US. JP is a gay man who bucks the perception that Louisville is only for straights, describing himself to friends as a "proud, Appalachian homo". He's enjoyed a stellar career which has taken him from White House Intern under George Bush Jr., to assistant to a Conservative member of the UK Parliament, to returning to Louisville to launch his consulting firm, JP Davis Partners. He believes the best politicians see themselves as public servants, and all political dialogue should start "with empathy". He condemns the adversarial nature of today's politics on both sides. But he's optimistic, believing that more people than ever are questioning what they hear, and thinking independently. https://www.linkedin.com/in/kyjpdavis/ https://www.jpdavispartners.com/about00:00 Start00:03 Fat, straight and Republican00:29 Proud, Appalachian homo01:22 "The pros are stepping in now"01:45 "This makes me feel like I have purpose"02:16 "Everybody in DC is gay"02:20 Lunch with GOP Powerhitters02:48 Politicians as good public servants03:28 "Talk issues"04:18 "Talking politics shouldn't be a bloodbath"05:40 "We've evolved beyond black and white issues"06:24 "I meet political people where they are"06:50 "There are bad apples on both sides"07:50 "Leveraging hot issues to divide us"08:30 "Immediate news is too often taken as truth"09:52 "We've got a lot of issues we're not facing"10:15 "I hate Taylor Swift" - "Dude......"10:50 "Donald Trump is our version of Kim Jong Un" 11:45 "People still believe he speaks for us"13:33 "Independent thinking is growing" 15:00 Honk for Jesus15:20 Evangelical church and transitions16:46 Seeing God in Grandmothers and the devil in families17:10 "Love is an action, not a word"17:50 What is a "holler"?18:55 The culture of being "looked down upon"20:12 We all deserve the same respect20:34 How can people be more financially secure? 21:00 Jeff Bezos' profits and the pay of his employees23:45 "A smart person figures out the effects of their actions on future generations"24:38 Lead with Empathy25:30 Kentucky ban on conversion therapy 26:51 Learning, Growing, Evolving, or Liberal Arts Education?
In this episode the Pride of Louisville, Kentucky, JP Davis, offers to support Kristi's non-profits K9s4COPS and K9s4KIDS, which deploy canines and their handlers to protect schoolchildren, hunt down narcotics and dealers, and combat crime across the US. We discuss how law enforcement dogs could help in the horrific school shootings across the country. They already provide protection for thousands of school children every day, and enhance the school communities in which they serve by safeguarding both the mental and physical welfare of the children. As presidential candidate Nikki Haley asked: "Why don't we have this in every school?" Then there are the millions of dollars in drugs Kristi's dogs have helped remove from the streets with their law enforcement handlers throughout the United States.JP is a social entrepreneur, serial mega-fundraiser for important causes, and a gay man who bucks the perception that Louisville is only for straights. He's enjoyed a stellar career which has taken him from White House Intern under George Bush Jr., to assistant to a Conservative member of the UK Parliament, to returning to Louisville to launch his consulting firm, JP Davis Partners, and to his support for both infrastructure organizations and nonprofits. We discuss the challenges of sustaining non-profit organizations in a world of scarcity, from convincing federal and state lawmakers of the merits of the programs, to the challenge of soliciting the smallest of donations to protect our citizens and communities at large. https://www.linkedin.com/in/kyjpdavis/ https://www.jpdavispartners.com/abouthttps://www.whitneystrong.org/storyhttps://www.K9s4cops.orgSTORIES00:00 Start00:13 In Person JP Davis "The Groupie"00:44 "You are Miss Texas" 01:01 "If you don't know what's going on around you, how can you conduct your day?" 01:24 Survival groups: Dr. Pepper, Beckys, Blue Bell Ice Cream, 'Whataburger' power outage map02:25 K9s4COPS 02:48 "It was a robust itinerary"03:25 College football; and name, image, and likeness04:30 Dude Perfect at Texas A&M05:39 JP is a fundraising guru06:09 "Fundraising is not asking for money" 06:29 The Whitney Austin Story (Whitneystrong.org) - mass shooting survivor07:35 The Pulse Nightclub Shooting - a dog could have sniffed the shooter's weapon08:33 "Projects like this give me hope"08:27 "$25-thousand for a dog? “From June 1962 to November 1963 I was involved in a sexual relationship with President Kennedy. For the last 41 years, it is a subject I have not discussed... In sharing details of that night with others, I always get the same reaction about President Kennedy's behavior. At first, the response comes in the form of dismay at the President's sinister intentions... "You must see it, Mimi. You were set up; He was a predator". Then, when I don't agree, the response changes to disappointment... in me. Others take the argument a step further. They are not shy about bringing up the "R" word, Rape, to describe what happened to me. I don't see it that way." - Marion Fay "Mimi" Beardsley Alford, JFK's Mistress and White House InternTrigger Warning: Sensitive Sexual Topics If you have not listened to last week's episode (or you want to leave us a rating and review!), you can do so on:Apple Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/blood-business/id1618657874Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/1iysH9n10Zsu8p0NAnnc1x?si=ddf529802efe4aa2Bonus content on Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/bloodandbusiness/Get ready for some major behind-the-scenes peeks, bonus content, and blooper reels!! Donald Trump seemed furious at Jim Acosta. Jim Acosta also pushed the arm of a White House Intern who was trying to retrieve the microphone from Jim Acosta. Did Donald Trump do the right thing? Was Jim Acosta wrong in the situation? Tucker Carlson was alerted that his home was the target of an Antifa mob who decided to protest Tucker Carlson’s house. Tucker Carlson was not home at the time of the protest but his wife was. Tucker Carlson’s Wife called the cops and hid in a pantry until help arrived. I find this to display to be completely despicable. This has gone to far and I hope that we can pump the brakes on this mob mentality soon! Was the mob right to protest Tucker Carlson’s house? Michelle Dyer wants everyone to think in multiple sources of income. Being a freelancer can be very hard. It’s not like a 9 – 5 where you can have a clear career path and most educational institutions don’t cover the “how to freelance” part of the art training. In a world where you bounce from job to job having multiple sources of income can make a huge difference in how you approach projects. When you’re not as worried about one gig paying all of your bills you have the freedom to take jobs that are more important to you and not just because you need the money. Michelle knows this first hand and from her own experience in the arts created a resource to help actors get side jobs that allow them to continue to act and work on their craft. MEET MICHELLE: (http://www.advanceyourart.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/MichelleDyer.png) In 2002 Michelle Dyer got on a plane to NYC with two suitcases and never looked back. Her eclectic background of performance, White House Intern, and now a full-time businesswoman has made her a natural candidate to inspire others to have a “side hustle” to be smart, pay the bills, and save money while going after their dreams. She created Survival Jobs for Actors when she had just arrived back into town after a gig, and didn’t want to go right back out on the road. After asking around for temp agency recommendations, she thought – there must be a better way [to find a survival job] – and thus Survival Jobs for Actors was born BOOKS: The Automatic Millionaire, Expanded and Updated: A Powerful One-Step Plan to Live and Finish Rich by David Bach (http://amzn.to/2jc4O6J) The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous & Broke Paperback by Suze Orman (http://amzn.to/2ip4z7H) The 9 Steps to Financial Freedom: Practical and Spiritual Steps So You Can Stop Worrying Paperback by Suze Orman (http://amzn.to/2ikWspi) RESOURCES: Bryan Tracy (http://www.briantracy.com/) Bob Proctor (http://www.proctorgallagherinstitute.com/) Jim Rohn (https://www.jimrohn.com/) Vic Johnson (http://www.vicjohnson.com/) http://www.actorsfund.org/ (http://www.actorsfund.org/) http://www.actorsfund.org/services-and-programs/al-hirschfeld-free-health-clinic (http://www.actorsfund.org/services-and-programs/al-hirschfeld-free-health-clinic) CONTACT: http://survivaljobsforactors.com/ (http://survivaljobsforactors.com/) BONUS: This podcast is brought to you by Audible.
