Dominance is a buzzword, and often controversial topic, in the dog world. Why?  Well, it has a negative connotation, yet at the same time, dog owners are often told they need to gain dominance over their dog.  What is acceptable? Is gaining Dominance really our goal? Is expecting our place on the hierarchy ladder and our rules and policies to be respected asking too much? This  thought-provoking piece on Dominance is followed by a chat with Sandra Davis, co-owner of The People Smart Academy.  Comparing humans and canines is, again, a controversial topic, yet, as professions, we find it effective (yes, Sandra compares humans to dogs!).  How we express ourselves, read others, teach and coach, and communicate is so important in all we do in life.                                                             Enjoy YOUR Learning JourneySeason 5 is a "Dogology" (kinda like a mixology) of tips, Q and A's, interviews, discussions and a deeper look into the 3 components of UPWARD Dogology all with the goal of increasing awareness and making the world a better place for all animals, including humans! Nikki is not only a certified veterinarian technician, but also a research nut - especially when it comes to canine health and nutrition. She is chalk full of cool advice (the "who knew?" kind of tips and info).  She digs deep in her research and talks with vets and canine nutritionists and then puts it all into an easy to understand "nutshell". There is so much info, especially generic information, on social media it is easy to get misinformed and lead down the wrong path. The Canine Health Nut is here to help guide you in the right direction. As Nikki suggests for health related advice, behavioural advice provided on social media or through "coffee shop conversation" (because "everyone is a dog expert") may not be wrong, but it may not be correlative to your issues or needs, or the personality of your dog. Examples are provided to help you weed through the crap and focus on your goals.Season 5 is a "Dogology" (kinda like a mixology) of tips, Q and A's, interviews, discussions and a deeper look into the 3 components of UPWARD Dogology all with the goal of increasing awareness and making the world a better place for all animals, including humans! Predictions can take some time to come true, but Naresh's was one that was destined to happen. Listen in to Naresh being interviewed on The Entrepreneur Way with Neil Ball back in 2016. The two explore why the digital landscape and why the work from home environment is so successful in today's world. Quotables: "You will never anticipate any of this stuff, I mentioned earlier, you have some great months, you have some terrible months, you just never know. You never know, but it takes a certain type of personality to go through with it and to I guess take that risk." "Online and digital is where business and the economy are heading." "People need to understand that we now live in the 21st century digital economy. Regardless of what your business is - you can be a doctor starting your own practice, you can be an accountant setting up your own tax advising shop or whatever CPA type of company you want to start - but I think having an understanding of the digital marketplace, is the first step in starting your business, because everything is going digital. The way people shop, the way people conduct business, the way people communicate, relationships, currencies, they are going digital, and you need to understand the marketplace, you need to understand the opportunities that are in this digital marketplace, because if you don't, you will be leaving money on the table. So I highly highly recommend that people learn as much as they can about the opportunities that exist in the digital marketplace." "Websites like Upwork.com and Fiverr.com, people who I have met overseas digitally, who I met through message boards and forums... having all these contacts and connections whom I found digitally has really streamlined my business processes. It's cut costs. It's cut the cost of doing business. Its cut the cost of starting a business tremendously, and five years ago, I didn't know any of this stuff at all. It's because the digital economy and the digital market wasn't as developed as it is today." "I believe that if you look at all these successful business people, one common thread that you will notice among almost all of them is they own real estate. They own property. I don't own any property or real estate yet, but its an area that I want to get into. Living is a necessity. Living in shelter is a necessity, so there is always going to be demand for residential real estate. The digital economy is going to disrupt commercial real estate. But having a home to live in, to bathe in, to eat dinner at the table: thats a necessity that is going to stay. You can't digitize that. It's going to stay forever." "I live at home. I work at home. I do everything at home. My meetings are at home. I do podcast interviews on Skype from home. I live on a beach in Tampa Bay, Florida. The beach has WiFi. I do lots of work from here. I write my books from here. There is just an incredible amount of freedom. I make my own schedule. I can sleep in if I want. I can go out at night and come home late if I want as long as I get my work done and am on top of my stuff. That freedom and control I have over the people who work for me, over my businesses: it's really a great feeling." Favorite Books: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. We all know dogs can think and process and that 6 months is a common age for change in behaviours to occur. But why? And how do we address these changes?  More restraints, gimmicks, toys, negative reinforcements?  Nope - we need to harness the cognitive side of the brain, just like we do with children when they turn 4. Are you frustrated by the methods commonly recommended by the experts (and the coffee-shop advice provided on social media)?  Ripping your hair out because you know your dog is good, but he is flipping-you-the-bird? Wondering why your dog loves treats, but still bites or hides or lunges or jumps or has a complete meltdown when another dog goes by your front window (a.k.a. "dog tv")?  You are not alone!  Positive Reinforcement Training is half of Operant Conditioning,, which is scientifically proven effective, so why is it limiting?  Well, the short answer is one-half of a scientifically proven methodology is simply that.... one half. Is including Negative Reinforcement the answer? No! We cannot realistically expect it to address the needs of all dogs with one method. As with people, and in particular with children, we need to adapt the way we parent, or pawrent, to suit their needs and the reason for the behavior.Season 5 is a "Dogology" (kinda like a mixology) of tips, Q and A's, interviews, discussions and a deeper look into the 3 components of UPWARD Dogology all with the goal of increasing awareness and making the world a better place for all animals, including humans!
