We've been teasing it for months but it's finally here: Our 12th anniversary episode of doing Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast! This episode — our last before embarking on a shortish hiatus — is double-hosted, featuring Marc Hershon and Tyson Saner. We talk about the shows' origins, its evolution during the Age of Soundcasting, and a number of the personalities we've met along the way. One of those personalities joins us as our Special Guest for this 12th year blowout and that's friend of Succotash and friend in real life, Travis Clark! He jumped into this madness the same time we did and, as part of that vaunted fraternity, weighs in with his own observations and opinions. In the style of our earliest days' shows, this installment is a bit longer than our fare these days, clocking in at about an hour and 15 minutes. Can you feel it, listener? I can. I can feel it. The warm, sultry breeze of our impending Succotash hiatus is gently wafting around the next bend in our feed. I'm your every-other-weekly-host Marc Hershon and welcome to Episode 352, which I'm calling “Last Clips Before Hiatus” because, well, it's our second-to-last episode before we take a break BUT the last one in which we'll be featuring clips. I'll tell you more about what our LAST show before jump the tracks is going to be like toward this end of this blog entry but, for now, let's share this time together as just another in the long lines of Succotash episodes where we feature clips from other comedy soundcasts across the internet.   Before I get to what I have in store for you, let's recall what Epi351, Tyson Saner's final solo hosting episode before the break, was like last week. His was the first episode to officially enter our 12th year of soundcasting. We started in April of 2011 so Tyson got the glory and the honor of being the first of us to break the tape on year 12 with “The Penultimate Pre-Hiatus Show”, which featured clips from comedy soundcasts Holidays After Dark, What Went Wrong, and Bit Weird But Fair Enough (I Guess). Tyson wrapped up that episode with a very sincere thanks and farewell for now and I think you'll get a great deal out of listening to that installment of the show.   As for me, I'm intending to go out with this show as it was originally conceived: By featuring a collection of clips from soundcasts that we've not featured before. Sure, we've occasionally dipped back into the same pool now and again to feature some faves – but our overall design and intent has been to bring you what's fresh and new, at least our ears and quite possibly yours. Bearing that in mind, I have clips from Literally with Rob Lowe, a new sitcom soundcast called Popcorn For Dinner, and a show from across the Pond in England – a well-regarded standby there called Always Be Comedy. Since this will be our last opportunity to do so for awhile, I'm going to feature an audio essay from comedian and friend of the show Dan St. Paul, from his Slices blog, entitled “Slave to the Machines”.   This lovely cavalcade of clippage is brought to you, as always, by Henderson's Pants and their new Bottoms Up Cargo Pants, a recent introduction designed by our own announcer, Bill Heywatt, for that discriminating boozehound on the go.   As I said, toward the end of this episode I let you know what's in store for the final-final episode next week, as well as a few wrap-up thoughts from my brain and my heart as we hit our 12th year anniversary.   CLIPS   Literally with Rob Lowe Is there more of a consummate celebrity in the entertainment world today than Rob Lowe? He's an actor who has created an indelible brand for and of himself, he's never really had any controversy around him, and he's basically a Hollywood homegrown talent who's been around since he was a kid. A few yeas ago he started popping up as a guest on a number of soundcasts and it wasn't long until he pulled the cloak off of Literally, the show he hosts every week, mostly talking to friends that he pulls right out of his own cell phone. He recently talk with Levar Burton, famous for playing Geordi LaForge on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Before that, he broke through as Kunta Kinte, a young slave on the Roots miniseries. And he talks a bit about both those experiences in this clip.   Popcorn For Dinner This next entry is brand new. It's only been out for about 8 or 9 weeks at this point, which means its first season is coming to a close and you can binge it. Because it's one of the first full-on soundcast situation comedies that I've heard. Popcorn for Dinner is, first of all, produced by one of my favorite production outfits on the planet, which is Kelly&Kelly out of Vancouver, Canada. We've featured other shows from them before, including This Sounds Serious and Dexter Guff is Smarter Than You. This new offering is largely written and created by comedian Maddy Kelly – no relation to Pat Kelly or Chris Kelly, who ARE related, but maybe it helps to have them set a show up if your last name IS Kelly. It features former Nickelodean star Ciara Bravo as the narrator, and stars Maddy Kelly, Charlie Foster, Jillian Ebanks and Ben Fawcett as four friends in their early 20s as they try to make it on their own, despite the fact that none of them know what that looks like...at all. It's got all the tropes that make classic sitcoms identifiable including a laugh track. It's meta, it's corny, it's funny and – after I listened to the first three episodes, I was pretty much hooked. The clip I have for you is from Episode 6 and I picked the very opening of the show so you can easily pick up on the vibe – they have the opening teaser scene, the set-up for the episode and your get to hear what the main characters each sound like.     Always Be Comedy I'm not sure how long Always Be Comedy has been cranking out episode in Britain but, given their list of guests, it's been going awhile. Hosted by comics James Gill and Tim Lewis, they invite other comedians in to chat and to curate their dream gig – o talk about all the elements that they would bring together to make a dynamite boffo show. This clip doesn't quite get to that part of the hosts' chat with guest, England comedy legend Stewart Lee, which is well worth strapping in for given his experience. Instead, Stewart waxes on a bit about some of his contemporary veteran comedians.   Dan St. Paul: Slave to the Machines Which brings us to the end of our featured clips this week and right up to the doorstep of comedian and friend of the show Dan St. Paul. He's been writing these humorous essays for his “Slices” blog on Substack for a while now, and I had him record a few and then added some music and effects to them. That was impetus enough for Dan to turn to his pal Jimmy Goings and really get into producing them. Here's his latest, entitled “Slave to the Machines”.   That is going to do it for this final solo episode before our Succotash hiatus begins. As I teased at the top of the show, I can let you know that next week, for our 12th Anniversary Show, Tyson Saner and I will be joining forces to celebrate the blessed event. Joining us will be longtime friend of the show who we first met in Episode 36 back in the Fall of 2012, Travis Clark. We'll look back and reminisce not just about Succotash but also about soundcasting and how far it come since we first fired up the mics in 2011. That's next week, in this very same feed, so don't miss it!   As for me, I am sometime startled to wake up and discover this Succotash thing has been going as long as it has. I've made a lot of friends, literally around the globe, through the network of soundcasters out there. I think one of the things that we'll do as we sail into our 12th year is that I may just have to stop beating the drum to call these things soundcasts instead of podcasts. We gave it a valiant effort. I don't think anyone would deny us that. We'll see.   I have to thank Joe Paulino, first and foremost, which helped me breathe life into this concept through the auspices of Studio P, his “home of the hit” in Sausalito, California. And for introducing us to Bill Heywatt, our erstwhile and often tanked booth announcer. Scott Carvey, one of Dana Carvey's brothers, created our theme music from me sending him a jazz tune I liked and doing his own interpretation of the concept so we could have some music free and clear. Kenny Durgis is our booth assistant who, frankly doesn't do much more than complain but we gotta acknowledge the little guy.   More than anyone connected to the show, my heartfelt and deep gratitude goes to Tyson Saner, who went from contributing a few odd clips now and again to becoming the show's Associate Producer to full-blown host, slipping into the Big Chair for several years while it stepped into the background as Executive Producer and got to take a big breather.   I would be remiss if I didn't thank my wife, the lovely and talented Debra Hershon. While she's never spent a moment hanging around this show, if not for her support and giving me the space to create and shave time off of our personal time – sometimes on while on vacation and sometimes even urging me to head to LA or shows in San Francisco so I could get interviews and such, this show certainly wouldn't have happened.   Finally, of course, there's you. Saluton, estas mi, Tyson Saner, and I welcome you heartily to this 351st episode of Succotash, The Comedy Soundcast Soundcast, which just so happens to be the second-to-last episode of Succotash before our 12-year anniverary special, which will then be swiftly followed by a well-deserved hiatus. If you are a 1st time listener, this show typically features clips from other soundcasts from around the world and has for almost 12 years. Last week in Episode #350, show creator and executive producer Marc Hershon brought you a "Chats" episode that featured conversation with, and fascinating stories from Shane Elliot of the sketch comedy group from North Hollywood called Fries On The Side that Mr. Hershon had also been involved with. It's a fascinating and funny chat that you should check out at your earliest convenience. In this, the last episode I'm producing before our aforementioned hiatus, I have brought you some clips to listen to from the soundcasts Holidays After Dark, What Went Wrong, and Bit Weird But Fair Enough (I Guess).  I'll be rounding out the show with 2 clips from the Strange Times Show, the hosts of which just celebrated 10 of their own years in soundcasting. The episode clipped for this purpose is #462, titled "Ten Bloody Years". Many soundcasters sent in their congratulations in audio form, so I've decided to include the one I sent, and the one Marc sent. Those will be played at various points in this program. I'm even throwing in a classic Henderson's Pants ad into this episode just for kicks. It's one of the oldest ones I think…If the numerical system it came with is to be believed.  Well, the show wasn't going to finish writing or producing itself, so I had to get into it. The clip I've selected is from somewhere in the middle. Enjoy.  What Went Wrong From Sad Boom Media, What Went Wrong covers Hollywood's most notoriously disastrous movie productions, digging into the behind-the-scenes insanity of everything from massive flops to record breaking blockbusters. The clip is from their episode of April 3rd, 2023: "Gone With The Wind". Vivien Leigh, Clark Gable, and Hattie McDaniel may star in 1939's Gone With the Wind, but this was David O. Selznick's dumpster fire. Join hosts Chris Winterbauer and Lizzie Bassett as they break down a truly disastrous production featuring 15+ writers, 3+ directors, an amphetamine-fueled producer, and racism galore - both onscreen and off. Bit Weird but Fair Enough (I Guess)From Down Under, under The Angry Chimp banner, host Stuart Buckland and guests look at some of the weird stuff going on in this crazy, crazy world. Our clip, from way back on the 1st of February, 2021, is from a show entitled "God or Demon?" And it features not one but two Friends of Succotash. In addition to Mr. Buckland, his guest this episode was British expat in South Korea Samantha Pett, joining Stu to examine weirdness surrounding cats, exams, toast and processed meat. (Sam was formerly a co-host of The Strange Times Show for a not-insubstantial amount of episodes, and a podcaster in her own right with programs such as The Kimchi Chronicles and Anarchy Audi". Keeping with the theme of including Strange Times Show content in this episode, and also wanting to feature Mr. Buckland's relatively recently established soundcast, I was pleased to be able to get both of them in one episode. And there it went…my last solo episode of Succotash before our hiatus. What an amazing ride this has been. It's really hard to wrap my head around the passage of time it seems. I don't mean to say that I don't know what it is, although I don't know what it is more than someone who studies that sort of thing might. Or might claim to…That's what people who study that sort of thing say, right?  "I know what time is..", in casual conversation. Or perhaps sitting by themselves in the middle of a café, working through what they imagine a conversation of that nature would be like, ultimately culminating in an unscheduled "outside voice" moment.  No, I don't mean to say that I don't know what it is…although I don't. It happens, I witness it, it continues to happen, and I attempt to fill it with variety and relative happiness…and music. I can't forget the music. Coming up next, and also LAST for…uh, well…let's just say that I'm not specifically sure how long it will be before we reemerge with something…But my understanding is that that is the plan…there's one of those "that that"'s again. Is that a peculiarity of the English language?  I suppose I could look it up, but I'm not going to do that right now. I'm going to be working on other things in the meantime, and you will be able to find those things over at www.tysonsaner.com as well as an archive full of  stuff I've already done as of this recording. We're clocking in at #349 this week and the duties of finding soundcast clips falls on me. Did you happen to hear last week's episode titled "A Spring Bouquet of Clips" ? It was Epi348 and it featured a trio of clips from the soundcasts FOGO, Tell Me About It, and The Best Show. In addition, that episode featured another drop-in from comedian Dan St. Paul with a selection from his "Slices" blog, and that one was called “The Thai That Unbinds”. It was a fun episode, and I invite you to check it out at your earliest convenience. (I almost forgot to mention that episode was hosted by Marc Hershon, who is the show creator, and executive producer. We've been sharing hosting hosting duties on a more-or-less every-other-weekly basis since episode #201 from May 5th, 2020. That episode was the first episode of the Succotash Shut-In" period of this soundcast, AND the first episode back from our first hiatus, which lasted all of about 2 weeks. I bring up the hiatus in case you hadn't heard episode #348 yet, because it was, in fact, announced at the end of that episode, that Succotash is going on another hiatus soon. Made up of talented comedians, songwriters, and frequent celebrity guests, the Story Pirates inspire kids to create, bringing laughter to kids and grownups of all ages with hilarious sketches, catchy original songs from all genres, and interviews with the creative geniuses behind the stories… kids! Our clip is from just last week  - March 23rd, 2023 - called "Oh Rats!" And today's new story, hosted by Lee Overtree and Benjamin Salka and dreamed up by a 7-year-old from New Jersey named Alexandra, explores the never-ending real estate struggles between mice and humans. So there you go, kids… or people who have them who also listen to podcasts… or at least WERE/ARE listening to THIS one… This is the end portion of the episode, where we make our goodbyes and I go off to record the vocal performance you are hearing now, after which I will edit everything that you have heard so far together… and that pretty much sums up the process of what came together as the episode you are nearly done with. I don't depend on my own wits and taste when it comes to trying to find out about everything available in the expanding soundcastiverse. I read reviews. I skim “20 Best Comedy Soundcasts This Year!” lists (although they NEVER use the Soundcast word.) And I get email from PR people. One PR “regular” is Kathryn Musilek from Shark Party Media. And she's been telling me for a while to check out the FOGO: Fear Of Going Outside soundcast. So I finally did. And it's terrific! Hosted by Ivy Le, “the most reluctant host ever”, according to the press release. It goes on: “Most nature shows are hosted by reckless white men, but avid indoorswoman Ivy Le is an Asian mom with severe allergies.” I listened to the first couple episodes and it was intriguing to hear the exploits of Ivy as she really wants to try to embrace the great outdoors. In the second season, she's really pretty much looking at her comfort zone in the rearview mirror. In Epi5 of the new season, with the help of Jesse Griffiths, a renowned chef/hunter, Ivy sets out to butcher an entire hog! Tell Me About ItSuccotash listeners have run across Adal Rifai, the host of this next new show, called Tell Me About It, a couple times. First back in 2015 when we clipped Hello from the Magic Tavern in Epi113, where he plays Chunt the Changeling. And again at the end of 2022, in Epi334 when we snipped Hey Riddle Riddle, in which Adal is the co-host. His new show, Tell Me About It, is couched as a game show, with Adal playing himself as an eccentric billionaire who challenges his guests to talk about, argue about and, eventually, defend a topic or thing they love dearly to try to climb the Most Interesting thing scoreboard against previous and future guests. The questions are absurd-ish, the scoring even more so, none of it made any easier because of Eric Silver, Adal's butler, who tries to keep things running smoothly. In our clip, the guest is friend of Succotash and one of the creators of San Francisco Sketchfest Janet Varney, who you may know from Avatar: The Legend of Korra, and her own soundcast, The JV Club. She's onboard to shove her interests in minatures up that scoreboard but first, she has to help host Adal understand what miniatures even are…  The Best ShowI'm not sure how, in 12 years of doing this show, we missed clipping the Best Show with Tom Sharpling. It's not obscure by any means — it was originally a terrestrial radio show — plus I've heard of it for years, and have heard Tom Sharpling on other soundcasts. He's big friends with Marc Maron, too. I guess what finally grabbed me was tht he managed to get an interview with Matt Berry, who I am a huge fan of, and you probably are, too. He's a British comic and actor, and he's a regular on the TV series version of What We Do In The Shadows. ‘Nuff said? In this snippet of their convo, Matt talks about having to decide between pursuing music or comedy…or did he? Slices: The Thai That BindsI played one of these essays in my recent Epi346, from comedian Dan St. Paul's Substack “Slices” blog. He's back with a tale of his first foray going after a Thai massage. Plus, they ask "At the beginning is Jim Carrey basically playing Ace Ventura?" And Paul reveals his theory that maybe Walter Sparrow's dog bite gave him rabies. Is Paul right? Crack the code! Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum This soundcast has been featured once before, back in the end of February 2019, in Episode 188, which Marc hosted in my stead while I was quite busy navigating life with my at-the-time newborn son Jareth. (This was back when the episodes typically featured 6 clips each and were not guaranteed to post with the regularity that they have been since around April of 2020 with our Succotash Shut-In phase of this program.)  In case you hadn't heard that episode, or don't know of Inside of You, the show description reads: "I'm Michael Rosenbaum, I've spent the better part of the last two decades in and out of film and television - mostly known for playing the bald dude on the show Smallville. Our clips hails from September 6th of last year, and features guest Wil Wheaton (Stand By Me, Star Trek: TNG, Big Bang Theory), who shares his brave story of coming to grips with the trauma of his childhood, breaking the cycle so it doesn't carry on to future generations, and understanding that part of his healing process may lead to a lifetime split from his family. Nooner Really what can be said about Nooner Podcast that hasn't already been? The show started with Dan Etheridge and Marty Yu hosting from Kevin Smith's living room way back in 2011 with their 1st guest Martin Starr. (It's a soundcast that is ALMOST as old as Succotash itself!) Since it started, the show has had some lineup changes whose personalities include, but are not limited to, Stephen Kruger, Bill Watterson, Emily O'Hara (or O'Hare?  I don't know and it is extremely difficult to find information about her, but I did not hallucinate her…) Giselle Nett, John Pirruccello, Cassandra Cardenes, and John Sylvain. These are the most frequent co-hosts. Other folks who co-hosted more than once — and may I remind you that I am going from memory — include Scott Marvel Cassidy and Vivian Martinez.   I have been listening to and contributing to the show in some way or another since the beginning, including music and live #tumblr ing which becomes harder to explain as time goes by. They are a nice group of people who have been very morally and creatively supportive of me over the years, so featuring them occasionally in place of perhaps a soundcast that I've never heard before seems reasonable to me. With that in mind, this clip is from the end of January this year, Ep: "Babylon Is the Worst First Date". Hosts Marty and John talk nonsense, but just fast forward to hear the funny MIRP, Cassandra, talk about why weddings are bullshit and why Babylon is like disappointing sex. And that brings us more-or-less neatly to the end of this episode of "Succotash". I do hope you found something interesting and/or enjoyable in the last half hour or so of content. It's Oscar day as I write this, and will likely be Oscar night as I am recording this. I'm rooting for "Everything, Everywhere, All at Once" to win best picture. It's been nominated for 11 Oscars, and I hope they win nearly all of them. I say "Nearly" because one of the categories they've been nominated for is "Best Song", and although I'm sure that the Son Lux/Mitski/David Byrne song "This is a life" from E2A2O is perfectly fine, "Naatu Naatu" from "RRR" is also nominated, and that song is AWESOME. To be fair, I haven't listened to "This is a life" that closely…certainly not to the degree that I've heard "Naatu Naatu"…(sigh)…ok, I will be right back, I'm going to give the E2A2O song a closer listen. (pause)  Ok, I have listened to it closely. I absolutely grok it.…But I still really want "Naatu Naatu" to win. At the very least, I hope to enjoy seeing the Oscar performance of "Naatu Naatu" later on YouTube. Assuming that there is an Oscar performance of "Naatu Naatu" planned…and why wouldn't there be?  As I mentioned before, it is AWESOME.   And so are you, for listening. Usually in a funny way but sometimes she can dig into the topic at hand and real. I clipped a recent episode where she had two guests on, and whose main claim to fame is that they are Chelsea's sisters, Shoshanna and Simone. In this clip they talk about how sister Simone went from working in the healthcare industry to becoming a free-range ear piercer. Two Vegan IdiotsThe title of the next show we clipped tells you pretty much all you need to know. Two Vegan Idiots is a soundcast features a pair of British comedians, Carl Donnelly and Julian Deane, usually interviewing a comedian guest each episode. Or, as the show description reads, “Carl tries to interview them while Julian tries to get them cancelled.” The vegan angle is true – they're both meatless eaters, and tend to get a lot of ink from the vegan press – but it's not the focus for their shows, since a lot of their guests seem to be omnivores. Their Epi186 featured returning guest Eleanor Conway, and this snippet has them into the topics of orgasms and also doing interviews on the street, which Eleanor famously does on British television.  The JTrain PodcastJared Freid is a New York-based comedian whose acts focuses a lot on dating and relationships. His soundcast, The JTrain Podcast, shares a similar focus, where he and his comedian guests answer listener emails and get into conversation about the dating life and other things, too. Our clip hails from last month and an episode entitled “Would You Expose A Cheater?” with guest Ashley Hamilton, co-host of the Celebrity Memoirs soundcast, which is what they're kicking around in this clip.  Slices: Rebel Without A PhoneThat's it for our clips this episode but we've got a treat in store. Regular listeners to this show may remember that I featured several comedy blog-pieces-turned-audio-musings from comedian and friend of the show Dan St. Paul. Yes, this is Episode 345, which means that the last episode that dropped into our stream was episode 344 and THAT episode was also a Chats episode, hosted by show creator and executive producer Marc Hershon, with whom I share hosting duties with on an every-other-weekly basis. In Epi344, Mr. Hershon's guest was Josh Gilliland of The Legal Geeks soundcast, which, on their main webpage over at TheLegalGeeks.com is described as "The Legal Geeks, Jessica Mederson and Joshua Gilliland, are proud to be attorneys and geeks. High Low with EmRataThe show practically introduces itself, when you read its description online: "Hi, I'm EmRata, aka Emily Ratajkowski. Maybe you know me from my work as an actress or model, or maybe you've read my bestselling book, "My Body". I'm interested in marrying everything high and low brow by talking pop culture and happenings that may seem frivolous in a way that raises big questions. On this podcast, I'll be talking everything from politics, philosophy, and feminism to sex, TikTok and relationships." Our clip hails from just a week ago, on February 6, 2023, and features guest Amber Rose, who - according to show notes - rose to prominence through several high profile relationships with famous rappers, but she has a whole lot more to say than gossip and rehash their history. On the show they discuss how she has reclaimed the labels “slut” and “bitch” through her event "Slut Walk", how she's raising her sons to respect women, classism, feminism and racism, and what she wants to see happen with men (and women!) when it comes to fighting misogyny. And that's where the clips run out, so welcome to the end of this week's episode. Hey, did you hear that a chunk of the sun "came off"? No, really…it did something like that. I only read the news about it today, and the source was a day old, so…we're still here as of one day later. This episode will have posted about three days from now if the usual set of circumstances has occurred and, the following week, Marc will be back with Episode #344 which I believe will be a "Chats" episode with guest Josh Gilliland, if I remember what was said in Epi342 correctly. Y'know…between pandemics and natural disasters happening in this lifetime, at this point in time, I could really use a hug. CLIPS Monster PartyLet's get this Succotash party started with what I was just talking about a moment ago – the Monster Party soundcast! The four gents behind this show came up with this idea when they were crashing in a hotel at the San Diego Comic Con a number of years ago. As they partied and got increasingly blotto, their discussion turned into a loud argument about what monster or sci-fi or superhero or action movie, TV show, or comic book was better than the others. Realizing this was a nerd idea sure to get them laid, the fab foursome — Matt Weinhold, Shawn Sheridan, Larry Strothe, and James Gonis — kicked off their show. I've had the pleasure of being a guest a number of times and just last week was the latest. Their topic: Superhero Obscura. Namely, digging up some of the most forgotten and unknown comic book heroes ever to don a cape. Since I was the guest of honor, I sliced out a snippet where I talked about the mysterious and forgotten…Captain Marvel! No, not that one. The other one. No, no, the OTHER one. Never mind. You'll see… Hollywood GoldAt a couple dozen episodes under her belts, the host of the Hollywood Gold soundcast, Daniela Taplin Lundberg — a movie producer in her own right — interviews other producers and filmmakers to help us look under the hood of some of the films we know and love. I grabbed a clip from an episode that dropped last month where she focued on the movie The Big Sick, written by Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, which was a fantastic, kind-of-surprise hit six years ago. SIX years ago? Yes. 2017. Crazy. Anyway, she caught up with her old friend and the director of the movie, Michael Showalter, to deep dive into how this movie got made. The clippage is about some of the casting of the film and the process of getting it down in the funny, touching, sweet style that he did. Extra NuggetsEven as the soundcast ocean continues to fill with thousands upon thousands of shows, I'm amazed at how inventive so many soundcast creators have gotten at finding that little niche, that undiscovered nugget – if you will – of a subject or fodder for a new soundcast. Nugget is exactly the right word for this next clip, which comes from a relatively new show.  So new, in fact, that they only have about a dozen episodes dropped at this point, going back to October of last year. The hosts are Dan Rubenstein and Adam Amin. Dan's one of the brains behind the Solid Verbal Media soundcast network, and Adam is a sports announcer with Fox Sports. The hook to their show Extra Nuggets is to take categories from old Jeopardy shows and challenge each other to answer them. But it goes beyond trivia. They only tackle a couple of categories an episode because every answer leads into some extra nuggets of information behind the topic. On a recent drop, one topic was “Historic Planes”. See how much of this stuff you know… The DownsideOur final clip for this episode takes a kind of cynical look at the world around us. Or at least around host Gianmarco Soresi. He's a comedian and a “lifelong cynic”, according to the show's description and it seems when he brings in a guest who's not a stranger to cynicism, like the amazing droll Todd Barry, the level of cynicism goes up exponentially. Here the guys are talking about when Todd started out doing standup back in Miami. Tyson Saner will be here in this same feed next week with Episode 343 and some entertainments for you. Joining him is co-host Ethan Dettenmaier, our old friend from Combat Radio. Our clip is from Episode #52 from January 16th, 2023, and features an interview with Claudia Christian (Babylon 5). And that brings Episode 341 almost completely to a close. I do hope you'll find something enjoyable in what I brought to you. It is my goal to provide at least 3 clips for the show I do every 2 weeks and sometimes it is surprisingly difficult to be in the mood to listen to folks I've never heard speak before. Sometimes, I just want to listen to one of my favorite soundcasts and that does become a bit of a tradeoff as far as time is concerned. Also, sometimes I am not in the mood for comedy. Funny thing, that. I love comedy and comedians, but burnout is real. All in all, I do think that listening to various strangers have conversations over the years has essentially made me a better listener. There's not enough space in my brain at the moment to remember if I have pointed that "better listener" thing out on the show before but…if I have…I can only apologize and say that it's just a true thing. I've had a lot of practice listening. Or does it? Anyway, it's a great show, uncovering stuff in history most of us probably don't know anything about. As part of his uncovering the story, Ed talked to both Broderick and the director, John Badham. And after the season was mostly over, he recently dropped a bonus episode featuring his chats with the two Wargamers. We have a sample of his convo with Matthew… The Retrospectors: This Day in HistoryThis is a daily show, as evidenced by the title, but each episode only runs about 10 minutes. So it's either a great kickoff to your other soundcasts or a nice palate cleanser between shows. Hosted by Olly Mann, Rebecca Messina, and Arion McNicoll, each episode is packed full of fascinating tidbits about something in particular that occurred that particular day in the past, as well as many of the trappings that surrounded it. Our clip comes from an episode that dropped last Friday called “Rink-O-Mania!” and rips the cover off the invention and introduction of the first roller skates… The Worst Idea of All TimeI'm reasonably certain that you had to have heard of the next soundcast we're featuring. Hailing from New Zealand, TWIOAT quickly got notoriety when it popped onto the scene in 2014. That's because the two hosts, Guy Montgomery and Tim Batt, centered the whole freshman year of the show by watching and reviewing the Adam Sandler movie Grown Ups 2. Once a week. Every week. For an entire year. Then they went on to do the same thing with Sex and The City 2, Sex and The City, We Are Your Friends, and the Emmanuelle franchise of softcore porn films. Their latest challenge? The Fast and Furious franchise. The franchise. In reverse order. While they still mostly go it alone – who else would want this crazy duty – they occasionally bring in people that are fascinated by their ordeal. Just last week, they dredged through the details of F9, as the 9th installment is lovingly known, with none other than comedian, actor, and soundcast host, performer, producer, and all-time most frequent guest Paul F. Tompkins. In our clip, Paul starts to explain the plot of the film as if he had to pitch it to a crowd of people fleeing a burning theater. Unpopular OpinionComedian and writer Adam Tod Brown and co-host Jeff bring you Unpopular Opinion every week. It's often relevant news and pop culture-related topics, of which the guys often have contrary perspectives. Back a few weeks ago, in December, they dropped an episode entitled “The Ballad of P22”, which was the designation of an storied and infamous mountain lion roaming the Los Angeles environs. They talk about P22's history and recent demise, some news stories about the Los Angeles city council, Dungeons and Dragons as therapy and the saga of Burnt Toast, which was the name of a cat that, well, just may have killed an alligator. Listen up… That's it for the clips this week but now is the time to get yourself ready for our next week's show, Episode 339, because it is Tyson Saner's ONE HUNDREDTH SHOW! I'm not sure what he's got in store but man, am I glad we have him. Our selected snippet is from November 17th, 2022, an episode netitled "Boldly Going Where No Hedgehog's Gone Before in Sonic Frontiers", and in this clip is the end of the conversation about the game "Somerville", which leads into a conversation about the game "Pentiment" on Xbox Game Pass. The Viral Podcast I read that hosts Chelcie Lynn and Paige Ginn are comedians — not therapists — but they have a soundcast which is pretty much the same thing. We sample that in this clip from Epi60 from earlier this month, when the hosts talked about terrible roommates, human tables, goals, salt baths, self help, jokes, would-you-rathers, Oh Do Me, and much more! And that brings us more or less neatly to the end portion of Epi335. Jordan Klepper Fingers the ConspiracyOne of the best forces for pseudo-journalism goodness has got to be Jordan Klepper, who's been a fixture on Comedy Central's The Daily Show for years. He's got a six-episode limited-run soundcast under the Comedy Central banner called Jordan Klepper Fingers The Conspiracy, where he digs deep into some of the wildest MAGA theories he's heard and, according to the show's description, “traces their origins with journalists, experts, and anyone who might have a lead on when JFK Jr. is coming back. The soundcast offers an opportunity to better understand some of the most extravagant stories Americans tell themselves.” In Epi5 of the series, Jordan wades deep into the history and mystery that is “Hunter Biden's Laptop.” We have a sample… Hey Riddle RiddleI'll be the first to admit this, but some soundcasts get past me. Maybe I'm not paying attention or maybe it's because there are a couple hundred THOUSAND of them out there now. But I'm really ashamed to ‘fess up to missing Hey Riddle Riddle, mainly because it's hosted by a trio of improv and sketch performers and those are MY people. Adal Rifai, Erin Keif, and John Patrick Coan are Chicago-based and they've been doing Hey Riddle Riddle for at least 4 years now. Out of the Headgum Studios, their homesite only has shows through their 4th anniversary show, which dropped this past August 27th. But there are still fresh installments coming out, available on Apple Podcasts, etc. What is Hey Riddle Riddle, for those of you who are like me and in the dark? Their show's description on Apple Podcasts reads, “Riddles! Puzzles! WhoDunnits! The Salty Language PodcastIf you've been a listener to this soundcast for any appreciable length of time, you know that both Tyson and I do have our favorites out there in Soundcastland. So we occasionally show them a bit more love than some of the other shows we feature. Tyson just played a bit last episode from our chum Davian Dent from England. I often talk with Jabs AKA Jason McNamara in Australia. And other folks like Hunter Block from Anti Social Show, Ethan Dettenmeier of Combat Radio, Ed Wallick from the hiatus'ed Don't Quit Your Daycast, and Travis Clark from, originally, Tiny Odd Conversations. A few shows retweet OUR tweets religiously – like The Jock Doc Podcast and I Shake My Head with Lisa and Sam. So I want to do them a solid and recognize their place in our Soundcast Society, too, which is why we're featuring a clip from a recent installment of The Salty Language Podcast. Hosted by Tony and Bryan, this show has been around probably as long as Succotash. Sluggin' out the episodes one after the other. The show's simple description on their homesite reads, “A soundcast about pop culture, living life, and anything else in our tiny brains.” This clip is about one of the guys having made it to his first in-person medical checkup since COVID started. Man ThinkersIt's hard to tell if the attitude of the hardcore male chauvinist is on the run or just biding its time. I'd like to think that kind of backwards attitude that men have towards women is being eclipsed by something more forward-thinking. Whatever the case, it's a way of thinking that soundcasters are having fun ripping on in a variety of ways. One of those is an iHeart Radio production, a show called Man Thinkers, featuring George Collins and Dan Finklestein. Here is how the show is described over on Apple Podcasts: “Man Thinkers is a podcast where the facts...are up for debate. For decades, the lamestream media has prevented real men from sharing their knowledge. On Man Thinkers, there are no degrees and no rules. The hosts aren't impressed by run-of-the-mill ‘experts.' CLIPS My Dad Wrote A PornoOne of the most unique soundcasts when it debuted back in 2015 had to be My Dad Wrote A Porno. Jamie Morton discovered that his father, writing under the nom de plume “Rocky Flintstone”, had written a pornographic novel call Belinda Blinked. Reading it aloud to his friends James Cooper and Alice Levine proved to be too hilarious to keep to themselves so they turned the experience into a soundcast. I actually chatted with the trio back in our Episode 141, which you can check out on our SuccotashShow.com homesite. I wanted to revisit the show because they have recently announced that My Dad Wrote A Porno will be closing down next month. Maybe it's because they're tired of it, or maybe Rocky won't stop writing porn – he's up to his 6th book in the Belinda Blinked saga. This clip is from their “Best of Book 6” episode, where they get into some of Belinda's best bits, so to speak. Ghosted!There is certainly no shortage of soundcasts dealing with the paramormal out there. Many of them lean into comedy because, otherwise, I guess we'd just be scared shitless all the time. Take, for instance, the clip we have from Ghosted! With Roz Hernandez. Specifically from an episode that dropped earlier this month, where Roz' guest was comedian Matt Braunger. In this part of the show, they listened to a couple of EVPs, or “electronic voice phenomena”. If you don't know what those are, Roz explains at the top of the clips. And even with Roz and Matt joking about what they're hearing, you might want to sleep with your light on from now on… Judith Lucy: Overwhelmed & LivingI was turned onto this next Australian-based soundcast from our friend “Jabs”, or Jason McNamara as it says on his birth certificate, host of The DHead Factor, which is currently on the longest hiatus ever, as well as Boganwood. The soundcast is Judith Lucy: Overwhelmed & Living, and Jabs says Judith Lucy has “very dry but hilarious Australian humor”. The show description on Apple Podcasts reads: “After lockdown Judith is still asking the big questions. Between baking and wondering if she had a drinking problem, Judith wondered how happy we'd been in our old lives and why 'back to normal' is not a good idea for us or the planet. She's out to change her life and yours.” In our clip, she decides to make some changes in her home to save money and to benefit the environment. She invites Brett Hedger, the greenhouse programs officer for the City of Port Phillip, over to see just how bad her place is. It's…not good. The Midnight Snack One of the first Succotash listener-slash-supporters-slash-soundcasters out there to start using the term soundcast  for their own show was Dave In The Cave. That's the only name I ever called him (although I do know his name is actually Dave Howard…), and he had a show called Taco Tuesdays. That show ended up, eventually, in the soundcast graveyard – which is a segment we should maybe bring back. After a few years off my radar, Dave In The Cave popped back on when he responded to one of our Succotash tweets last week. It turns out he has a soundcast called The Midnight Snack but he's kind of off the reservation in terms of where the show is distributed. I'm only finding it on Soundcloud, which is a fine place to be – you can find us there, too, of course. The show has an amazing cast of wacky characters who seem to appear only in bumpers between some cool original music. We have a sample from his latest episode 98… That's it. At one point, Dak and Moshe started comparing the sizes of their RVs. As men do. DorkNation (High School Sucked)I'm a little confused by our next offering, which is back in the U of A. I first thought the soundcast was called High School Sucked, hosted by Jane Stanton and Darcy Michael. But the most recent three episodes are called DorkNation – one word: Dorknation – and the “About” section on the website says “Jane Stanton hosts new guests each week to dish some dirt on High School. Were they best years of our lives? Does it actually get better? Join us with a new guest each week as we attempt relive the "glory" days.” And then the first episode of “DorkNation has both hosts kicking off what they're calling “High School Sucked.” This episode, the first of three DorkNation shows – maybe more are coming, I'm not sure – feature just ordinary folks waxing on about how miserable high school was. This clip features a guest named Haylyn talking about how her best friend, who started out as her worst enemy, managed to get through it all. Callan's KicksLet's head over to Ireland now for a clip from a soundcast called Callan's Kicks, featuring Oliver Callan, who is a comedian, a voice actor, and an impressionist. He's been doing his soundcast almost as long as we have, having started back 10 years ago in 2012. And his “kicks”, are a reference to the satirical shots he takes on the show at a variety of public figures, mostly through audio sketches where he does the voice of whomever he's sniping at. In case you missed last week's Epi325 of the show, hosted by my unparalleled every-OTHER-weekly co-host Tyson Saner, it was an fantastical half-hour that included a triple shot sampling of soundcasts — in a show entitled “They Can't All Be Comedy" — from the likes of Word In Your Ear, Going Deep, and Bubble. And see, that first one on the list – Word In Your Ear – that's a music-oriented soundcast. Because, although we tout ourselves as “THE Comedy Soundcast Soundcast”, sometimes we let ourselves stray from the format because that's what we do. If that pisses you off, you can go listen to…oh, that's right. There is no other Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. So enjoy! As I was saying, my special guest this week is none other that Dana Carvey. You know him from his year on NBC's Saturday Night Live, the short-lived-but-amazing The Dana Carvey Show, Garth from Wayne's World, The Master of Disguise, comedy specials, and from here – Succotash – where's he's been a recurring special guest since we first started in 2011. Heck, he was our very first guest back in Episode THREE. In our chat I say that he last visited us a couple of years ago but, in reality, it was just back in February of this year. And now he's back! And for a special reason. Last time he was on he was talking about the soundcast he'd started with fellow SNL alumnus David Spade called Fly On The Wall. Where they interview guests who were either part of the SNL cast or crew, or else were hosts, or musical guests. It's been doing REALLY well and they're not only going to do another season of those shows but there might even be a spin-off companion show to that. But, not satisfied with slicing off that corner of SoundcastLand, Dana is working with his sons, Dex and Tom, and their friend Julian, to create a scripted comedy soundcast. It's called The Weird Place, and it's a Looney Tunes tweak of a kind of Twilight Zone concept and it's going to be dropping very soon. On Halloween day, to be exact. We talk all about it. He co-hosts the show with Jessica Mederson but she was traveling the week I was asked to be an “expert witness” along with a bunch of other legal eagles, including Gregory Pang and a cast of their regulars. The show's entitled “Review of The She-Hulk: Attorney-at-Law – Episode 5” and, because my day job finds me in the world of branding, trademarks, and other such intellectual property, or “IP”, Josh invited me along to ring on some of the trademark issues that the Jessica Walters character (played by Tatiana Maslany) has to tangle with in that episode. Namely, She-Hulk gets sued for trademark infringement over the use of the She-Hulk name by one of her enemies. Backstory on The Legal Geeks soundcast: These real lawyers, headed up by Josh and Jessica, sound off on legal issues faced by fictional characters – everything from the MCU to the Star Wars Universe. Not just on the soundcast, but they show up to places like ComicCon in San Diego and run mock trials based on situations that crop up in these TV shows, movies, comic books, and so forth. Each episode, they invite a guest into what they term their “magical restaurant” to choose their favorite starter (that's an appetizer to us Yanks), main course, side dish, dessert, and drink. It's all just a glorious excuse to deep dive into heady – and sometimes silly – convo with their guests. A recent episode featured the fantastic, amazing, and England's national treasure Richard E. Grant. This clip goes form the silly to the sublime, as Richard slides into how his late wife's last wish fueled his recently released memoir, A Pocketful of Happiness. PornomedyLast show off the bench today is only so because of alphabetization. It's a new soundcast, just a few episodes in, entitled Pornomedy. It's hosted by a good friend of Succotash, Monica Hamburg, who has not only had a couple of soundcasts over the past bunch of years that we've been on, but was our special guest co-host WAY back on Episode 64 in July of 2013, almost 10 years ago. She sent in this clip of Pornomedy, along with a note from which I quote the following: “Hi Marc: I hope you are doing well! So... I started a new podcast recently. "Pornomedy" which explores the weird world of free porn sites: Absurd porn comments (as though any aren't!), terrible titles, baffling tags - and more. This time, hilarious Baltimore comedian Mike Moran joins me. We speak of "The Chair" (i.e. It-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named) - as well as a porn commenter with maximum game, the right time to rent a truck for your porn film - and much more! This is only the 3rd episode of this new podcast (though it's on the feed with all the other shows I've done) but I like it. I hope you will too! I really liked hearing this interview. I chose a clip from the very beginning of it because I do love a big, detailed introduction and when an interview has the amount of warmth that this one clearly does. Chatabix This was recommended to me by none other than Davian Dent of Strange Times Podcast (longtime friend of Succotash and frequently clipped.) What's the show about? Basically, comedians David Earl & Joe Gillingham chat drivel and nonsense. A shambolic Breakfast Show with Special Guests and regular contributors. The clip we have dropped on September 12th, 2022, featuring guest Doug Stanhope. Wow, it seems like only a few minutes ago I was writing the intro to the show and now this bit at the end needs writing as well. Isn't that the way of things? I do hope you found something enjoyable in the program tonight…I say "tonight" for a couple of reasons, one is that it is actually night when I am recording this part, and the other is because, more often that not, I used to say that regardless of what time of day it was when I recorded…and now I still do. When I say “we”, that's not the royal “we”, I'm referring to myself and my kindly, well-versed co-host Tyson Saner. I actually reviewed the show back in 2017 for the then-Splitsider.com and a quote from my review is STILL up on their homesite at MyNeighborsAreDead.com, where I wrote, “I wish I'd thought of that!” And I do. The brainfever of Adam Peacock, MNAD chats up the lesser known characters from scary movies. He's had a lot of comics and others pop in to voice the horror movie side characters, but recently Patton Oswalt (who I SWEAR I will get in front of the Succotash mics one of these days) was on as truck dispatcher Frank Ludd and his take on one of his company's hapless drivers, Ed, who made the mistake of stopping to pick up a “hippie chick” as he put it, and barely escaped with his life. Our clip covers how part of it went down… Sarah Halstead's Drinking During Business Hours Normally Tyson and I come across the soundcasts we clip pretty much the same way you and people you know might: We scan the scads and scads of shows that are out there and we see what captures our fancy about one show or another. Sometimes it's a familiar name or face, occasionally it's shows that share a similar theme, and often it's a bit of a crap shoot. There are plenty that I've listened to that I just end up not finding a viable clip. Or the sound quality's off. Or whatever. In the case of this next clip, however, it was a comedian buddy of mine, Rich Chassler, and the surprise announcement via his socials that he had proposed to comedian Sarah Halstead. That's when I learned that in addition to soon becoming the future Mrs. Chassler – I don't know if she's actually changing her name – that she's also the host of Sarah Halstead's Drinking During Business Hours. Her usual M.O. on the show is to crack open a bottle of vino and kick back with what she called a ‘diverse line of creatives about their fife's journey, passions, and what might lead them to drink during business hours.” In this case, after having taken a couple week off from dropping new episodes, Sarah is back this week for Episode 47 and her guest is the future Mister Halstead…Rich Chassler. The Doug Stanhope PodcastWe're going to revisit another show and this one we haven't clipped since 2013. It's The Doug Stanhope Show with the titular Doug Stanhope. Truly an original comedy voice, Doug also take a great interest in the folks he talks to and recently for his 499th episode back in August he invited comedian Kristine Levine into his studio, affectionately called the The Funhouse, in Bisbee, Arizona. Entitled “Kristine's Wad of Gum is Cancer”, they get into her bout with and upcoming operation for stomach cancer. Our clip is from early in the show, when Kristine talks about her wait problem and other issues. (There's a GoFundMe for Kristine. I mean, I used to listen to a LOT of music before discovering soundcasts because I also make music occasionally but that's not the same kind of listening, really. There have to be other people that spend as much, or possibly even more, of their time listening to people have conversations that they cannot participate in in real time as I do. I wonder what percentage of listeners of soundcasts experience them the way I have for easily 13 years? Anybody know of any ongoing studies? Seriously, I really want to know. I need to know if I should do less of it in case there is any sort of detrimental effect on my brain as a result. Maybe it's fine. Maybe, in the most general sense, our brains can take it. As time went on, the soundcast proliferated in a way that is still quite surprising at times. More's the merrier, more for show creator and executive producer Marc Hershon and myself to choose to listen to, take snippets from, and ultimately present a few of them to you, the listener. I am grateful for a great many things of late. I am grateful for the friends and family that I both have had and, through the recent nuptials of my brother, I now have. Or…I also have…now… Something like that. It was an amazing time seeing many people I had not for 20-30 years perhaps. It was amazing food and the ceremony was both very moving and succinct. I'm grateful that my parents were able to attend a marriage of their child, in their lifetime. I'm grateful for the furiously expanding amount of perspective that time and life has brung, and is bringing to me. I can even say that I am grateful for the soundcast as a format. I don't know if any of my assorted audio content post-2002 would have even existed as it does had it not been for the soundcast. Much of it does directly because of the soundcast and because of other soundcasters sharing it with their listeners over the last significant portion of my life so far. This is Episode, or “Epi” number 318 and I'm Marc Hershon, your guide for this week's tour of comedy soundcast clips. Not to be confused with your host for last week's installment, Epi317. That would be Mr. Tyson Saner, a grand fellow in his own right. He presented a trio of soundcast clippage under the title “Reach Out and Clip Someone”. Those shows included The Greatest Song Ever Sung (Poorly), Mom Can't Cook!, and The Co-Founder. If you somehow missed the show last week, it's still hanging around wherever you get your soundcasts. Places like Apple and/or Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Soundcloud, Amazon Music, iHeart Radio, Audible and, after a long break while we were boycotting them for their programming decisions, Succotash is back on Spotify, baby! But that was then, this is now, so let me tell you what I have in store for you. Of all the comedy sub-genres – crime, movie reviews, TV show rewatches, the paranormal, etc. – one that has gotten very little play on this show over the years has been sports/comedy or comedy/sports. Not for a lack of content – there are thousands of soundcasts with a sports bent to them. The truth is that I'm just not much of a sports fan. Any sports. And although some of my favorite funny people host or are featured guests on these shows, when I've tried to listen I pretty much don't know the details that they get into around whatever the sport happens to be. To be totally transparent, no one has ever written in or called the Succotash and Runaway Truck Ramp Hotline at 1-818-921-7212 to request clips from sports-based soundcasts. Nor have any of those shows sent in their own clips to our direct Hightail upload site, at hightail.com/u/Succotash. So have I been remiss? Sure. I understand from some friends of Succotash who have been guests on both our shows that the title isn't so much about boxing as it is about being enclosed in a studio with a former pro boxer and a lot of herb being partaken of with very little ventilation. Back in July Mike had Bill Maher as his guest and they tore it up about religion, Black Lives Matter, police brutality, and Marilyn Monroe. (Who's coming at poor Marilyn Monroe after all these years? That would be Bill, of course…) SportsfeldHere's a clip where I am totally out of my depth. This is from Sportsfeld – “a sports podcast about nothing”, according to the show's description on Apple Podcasts – and I think the hosts, Andrew Zuber and Jake Goldsbie are talking about soccer. Pretty sure. But the series in Canada they're talking about was happening concurrently with a baseball series AND a hockey series. For this clip I purposefully left off whatever set-up there was, just to see if you're as lost as I am… The Grade CricketerThis next clip may be a bit out of reach for listeners who are even die hard sports fans in North America. The show The Grade Cricketer and it's about – you guessed it – cricket. To start with, I'd never heard of the term “grade cricket” and had to look it up. Here's the definition on Wikipedia: “Grade cricket, also known as Premier Cricket is the name of the senior inter-club or district cricket competitions in each of the Australian states and territories.” There were originally three hosts of the show, all cricket writers in Australia: Sam Perry, Dave Edwards, and Ian Higgins. These lads have even written books about the topic, although I was sad to hear that Dave went his own way in 2020 to focus on other things. Anyway, I could barely understand what they're saying, let alone what their cricket references are about. So I reached out to an one of our oldest friends of the soundcasts: Jabs (Jason McNamara) of the old DHead Factor soundcast down in Canberra, Australia to give me his thoughts on The Grade Cricketer. Thanks, Jabs! View from The Cheap SeatsOur final clip is from a show by a couple of guys I've met peripherally, years ago, at the Los Angeles Podcast Festival. We've featured them before from the great soundcast they do along with Daniel Van Kirk called Dumb People Town. I'm talking about the Sklar Brothers, Randy and Jason. These guys are totally into sports and they get to let it shine nowadays in their other soundcast called View from the Cheap Seats. In this clip they're talking about MVPs and champinoships and other things I don't get, along with their guest – another friend of Succotash – the great Wayne Federman. That's going to do it for our sports clip-related show. If you're a sports fan I hope I didn't ruin it for you, but I just don't get it. Or them. I'm a nerd, and a dweeb, and I prefer a good game of Dungeons & Dragons to watching the Super Bowl. But I recognize the importance of sports in our international zeitgeist so please enjoy. The title of their show comes from the premise that the mom character in the film is usually unable to cook, and this is considered richly comic. Our featured clip comes from their recently released premier episode "Smart House", from July 18th of this year. (The plot of this epic tale is that a young boy wins an intelligent house of the future, which starts off by stealing some of his blood, and then things go downhill from there.) The clip takes from the hosts' discussion of the capabilities of the "Smart House". The Co-Founder Starring Sunita Mani and Alexandra Shipp, two young start-up founders, both women of color, are on the brink of losing their company; a fate they narrowly avoid thanks to a hairbrained scheme to have their neighborhood barista— a white dude, of course— pretend to be the third founder in order to raise money. But when the barista reveals he has a scheme of his own to keep the company in his clutches, hijinks and hilarity ensue. The Co-Founder is a Realm production, starring Sunita Mani and Alexandra Shipp, and written by Alexis Wilkinson, Alexa Wejko, and Mimi Mondal. Which brings us neatly to the end of the show that I put together for you, the listener. Following so far? Well, here's what happened. I was traveling for business. Not Succotash business but my day-job business, and I was clipping soundcasts while I was on the road. Listening to shows on planes, editing them in my hotel room,a nd trying to get it all together. Then I got “Delta shitty hand” – our keen-eared listener heard what I did there – and I had a flight cancel on the last leg before home. Not just before home, but before I could return to the Nerd Nest and my precious soundcasting equipment. Short story long, I couldn't get ‘er done in time to make it worth dropping for that week. It was going to be a show devoted to comedy sports soundcasts so I had to shelve that for a future show. Jeremiah wonders…is a weekly podcast where Jeremiah Watkins interviews guests with some of his favorite original characters and impressions. You never know who's going to call in! We clipped from back in May of this year (this year being 2022, if you happen to have been time traveling…), Episode 231 with guest Nigel Ng (AKA Uncle Roger) …and that pretty much brings us to the end of the episode for this week. Sometimes it is difficult to believe that it has been 11 years since this show started, and within that time the format known as the "podcast" has experienced a huge surge in growth and…perhaps a stagnation, a decline, a resurgence…you know, I don't really know if the last bits of that are true. I'm calling this episode “Let's All Go to the Movies” because I'm selected a quartet of comedy-oriented movie review shows. In the past we've featured soundcasts like How Did This Get Made? and the Film Threat soundcast with friend-of-the-show Chris Gore. I ventured out into the Soundcastiverse and found shows we haven't featured yet, which means you'll be hearing snippets from But Is It Good?, Forever Movie Boys, Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong, and They're Just Movies. In addition, we're brought to you this week by Henderson's Pants wildly appropriate Hooray 4 Hollywood Slacks. Plus, we get back into sharing your social media handles when I dip into the TweetSack a little later in the show. CLIPS  They're Just MoviesI'm going to start with a soundcast called They're Just Movies because they did a review recently of Lightyear, that Buzz Lightyear movie which I haven't seen yet. This soundcast is hosted by a “small group of nerds” as they call themselves, which includes Riley Murdock, David Gauthier, and James Strieb. Their collective reviews around the film featuring a different flavor of Buzz Lightyear than we've seen featured in the Toy Story movies are little light on the kudos, yet they don't out and out trash the film – to put a positive spin on their take, they start out talking about what they liked about it. Forever Movie Boys A trio of Australian guys host the Forever Movie Boys soundcast. The funny things is that there are three of them BUT the logo for their show only features two caricatures. Although there IS a kernel of popcorn hovering between the two, so maybe that's the third guy? And, as is often the case since we started doing Succotash 11 and a half years ago, no trace of any names for the hosts. At least not on the web. Maybe they mention it during the show but I missed it. Anyway, in advance eof them wanting to catch the new Elvis movie by Baz Luhrman, they treated themselves to a bit of a culty classic the week before it opened: Bubba Ho-Tep. It seems like they didn't quite dig it… But Is It GoodOur third movie review related comedy soundcast is called But Is It Good” – no question mark in that title, if you were wondering – and its hosting by Hunter Callahan and Zack Olson. We're just going to pop back a couple of weeks when the hosts welcomed guest Robert Clough in to discuss Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the way-too-long anticipated sequel to the second Ghostbusters movie. They all kind of dug it but there were some issues… Rotten Tomatoes is WrongWhen you're gambling it's usually a good idea to cover your bets. I get the feeling that's what's going on with our last review for a show called Rotten Tomatoes is Wrong. That's because it's a soundcast that's also produced in conjunction WITH Rotten Tomatoes. According to the show's description , hosts Jacqueline Coley and Mark Ellis “go deep and settle the score with some of the most beloved – and despised – movies and TV shows ever made.” Helping them tackle an overview of all six Jurassic Park movies is actor Andrew Guy. We have reached the end of our designated time together for this week. Tyson Saner returns next week in this very same feed to bring you Succotash episode 314. Cozying up with their famous friends, your favorite couple provide a funny, revealing, and very candid look into their relationship and life at large. In some episodes, they'll even kick the guest out of bed and get extra personal in what some have called the most searing and rawly sexual conversations ever to burn their way through a voice recorder. (Note: There has not been an episode of In Bed with Nick and Megan released since the "Season 1 Finale" dropped on September 13th, 2020.) Old habits die hard, right? I can't seem to drop an episode on time these days! What is this, the third show that I've hosted in a row to drop a day or more late? Ridiculous. BUT I have an excuse. Okay, I've had an excuse every time but THIS time it's real-er. Firstly, as our announcer Bill Heywatt will tell you, I AM Marc Hershon, the OG host for Succotash, The Comedy Soundcast Soundcast, and you've gotten hold of Episode 311. My excuse? I've been moving. Not just down the street, or down the block, or across town. My lovely wife, Debra, and I have uprooted from Sausalito, California – right across the bay from San Francisco, if you're unfamiliar – and headed for the hills. The Sierra foothills, that is, in Grass Valley, CA. That's a good 3-hour drive from the Bay Area, or SIX hours if you're making the trip in an electric car with a 100-mile range. Anyway, just moved in last Friday so “Studio N”, my Nerd Nook, had to be disassembled, boxed up, and re-assembled in our new place. It's been a journey, friend. Average daily temperature is in the upper 90s to low 100s. And just a couple days ago, a wildfire broke out about 14 miles away with smoke I could clearly see through the Studio N window billowing up. So enough of my excuses. Or mangle, as the case usually is. The hosts, Peter, Michael, and Rhiannon look at the reasoning behind SCOTUS' issues, using their dark humor to reveal the high court's biases, as the About section of their homesite tells us. Spoiler Alert: The clip I've selected doesn't really have a whiff of their trademarked humor in it as if comes from their recent Emergency Episode: Roe Is Overturned. I didn't want to play anything funny because I don't think the matter is funny and neither do they. Romance Road Test It's always fun and interesting when one soundcast begats another. And now the long-running By The Book soundcast, hosted by Kristen Meinzer and Jolenta Greenberg, have had a baby soundcast, entitled Romance Road Test! Kristen and Jolenta are also co-authors of the book How to Be Fine: What We Learned from Living by the Rules of 50 Self-Help Books. After years of experimenting on themselves with every self-help technique under the sun, they're leveling up and putting their own long-term romantic relationships on the line. Over 16 episodes, Kristen and Jolenta and their partners will test out popular recommendations for reigniting romantic connections. Everything from grooming each other—to sex every day for a week. Audiences will listen in and learn about what actually brings them closer…and what makes them want to run screaming away from each other. In this clip from their debut episode, they set up the idea of re-creating your very first date with your partner…if you can remember back that far. (You can get the first episode of Romance Road Test in their By The Book soundcast feed BUT the remainder of the episodes are exclusively available on Audible.com or through the Audible app.) Crazy TownFor our next clip this episode, it's off to Crazy Town, a soundcast hosted by Asher Miller, Rob Dietz, and Jason Bradford. This motley trio from the Post Carbon Institute uses their show to try to keep it together while diving in to maddening issues like climate change, runaway capitalism, and widespread social delusionism. I clipped their episode from early June entitled, “Throwing Superman Through a Cigarette Truck: The Insidious Manipulation of Advertising”. Our snippet has the hosts getting into the annoying practice in movies known as “product placement.” Prop CultureI am still trying to wrap my head around the concept for our lat featured show, entitled Prop Culture, which is another brand new soundcast. First of all, it's not to be confused with a Disney+ show of the same name, hosted by Dan Lanigan, who is a movie prop collector. The Prop Culture we're clipping is hosted by 3 NFTs characters Loot Bag #2020, Quirkies #307, and Quirkies #1988. It seems to only be available on iHeart Radio, or was – the more I look for it, the more it seems to be leaking out into other distribution channels. I'm not sure who's doing the three voices. I do find it interesting that the show description on iHeart Radio ends with: “Prop Culture. We bet you'll hate it.” See what you think with this snippet from their first episode, “The Pickleball Murders”. Penn's Sunday SchoolHosted by magician and comedian Penn Jillette – you know, from Penn & Teller – along with Michael Goudeau and Matt Donnelly kick around the news of the week. And YOU can be part of the confab, because this is a live show that kicks off at high noon on Sundays Las Vegas time on Twitch TV, which they then punt into a podcast by Monday morning. Our clip is from very recently – June 11th, 2022 – and features guest Robert “Bob” Corn-Revere, their resident 1st Amendment attorney who gets into free speech and pornography and whether the founding fathers of the USA got into that stuff. Penny For Your ThoughtsLast but not least is our clip from soundcast Penny for Your Thoughts. Hosted by comedian Jake Penny and a rotating cavalcade of co-hosts, we look to the beginning of this month of June, 2022, and fellow comedian Emmanuel Lewis. The guys talk about performing comedy and, in this clip, thinking back to the early days of starting out and figuring it out. The show notes on Buzzsprout says it all: “Real laid back zoom podcasting just talking comedy and old stories.” That's going to do it for me for now. This is Episode 307 BUT, due to me being WAY too crazy this past week – my wife and I are in the process of purchasing a home and also trying to work and do soundcast reviews AND draw a weekly editorial cartoon and… Well, you can empathize that I was just too slammed to snip some fresh clips this week. So we're going to do a good old fashioned throwback or, as they used to call them, rerun from 8 years ago this month. That's right! June 12th, 2014 was the drop date for Epi88, and I'm going to tell you more about it in just a moment. But first, if you missed LAST week's Epi306, served up by my esteemed alternating co-host Tyson Saner, then you missed “Clips from Friends of the Show”, wherein he featured snippets from The JV Club with Janet Varney, The Writers Panel and The Boogie Monster. Eight years ago or so it was an episode entitled “Sippin' Clips” and I was crowing about having won a 1st place award from the California Newspaper Publishers Award for my editorial cartoons in the Half Moon Bay Review. First time ever! And in the episode from yesteryear you're about to hear, I featured WAY more clips than we do now – and Tyson Saner, who had only recently been dubbed Associate Producer of this program, furnished a bunch of those clips. They came from some shows that are still around and some shows that have…well, gone on permanent hiatus. Some of the hosts of those shows may have gone away as well. In particular, Gilbert Gottfried, as we featured a clip from his very first episode of Gilbert Gottfried's Amazing Colossal Podcast. In addition to that we clipped from John Dredge's Nothing To Do With Anything Show, The Jockularity Show, Geeks with Wives & Capes, The Crunch Time Show, What A Pair of Trousers, Old Enough to Know Better, Like I'm An Idiot, and, finally, The Picnic Time Podcast. There are also not one but two segments of A Burst o' Durst, and – of course – a Henderson's Pants commercial. Could I have picked a clunkier way to say that? … Perhaps so. It's hard to say. It is, however, VERY easy to say "thank you for listening" so I'll do that now. Although the episode I'm clipping dropped on May 28th, 2020 with guests Kaitlin Huwe & Stephanie Erb, I'd be remiss to mention this soundcast published what looks to be their 500th episode in late April…which is a pretty tremendous milestone, so I would like to extend a belated "Congratulations!" to them. Janet is an old friend of Succotash, with her show being first clipped way back in Episode 23, and then again in Episode 115. In addition, she chatted with my co-host Marc Hershon in between those appearances, in Epi97 during his visit to one of the Los Angeles Podcast Festivals. In this installment, Janet welcomes both Kaitlin and Stephanie (Therapy With Pami) for a chat about growing up in one place vs. moving all over, and all the things that come with both. Top hats! The Writers PanelThe definitive insider's guide to our current golden age of television, Ben Blacker's The Writers Panel is an ever expanding anthology of live convention panels and intimate in-studio interviews with the writers, producers, and show runners responsible for all the shows you can't stop watching. I clipped a sample from the October 6th, 2020 show, featuring a panel interview with Mary Laws (Monsterland), Brannon Braga (Books of Blood), & Matt Morgan (Helstrom), with Mr. Blacker serving as the host. (Ben was the co-creator of the long-running Thrilling Adventure Hour, and was a special guest back in the Dawn of Succotash for Episode 37.) The Boogie MonsterOur final clip of the episode is The Boogie Monster, hosted by comedians Kyle Kinane and Dave Stone, mainly talking about ghosts and barbecue and maybe interviewing people and maybe having had a few drinks before they started recording. (While these gents are not exactly old friends of the show, we have featured clips from The Boogie Monster twice previously, in Episodes 181 and 225.) This clip is from their May 10th, 2022 show, "Live from Humboldt County". Kyle and Dave are live from Savage Henry Comedy Club in beautiful Humboldt County, California. They get into some Squatch talk with local wizard, Dr. Foxmeat, and Robert Leiterman and Rowdy Kelly of The Bluff Creek Project. And that brings us neatly to the end portion of this program. Soundcasting has become such a huge part of the world of entertainment in the last 11 years since "Succotash" began… it's really fascinating to me, right now, in this moment. It's a legitimate cultural phenomenon that shows no signs of ceasing to be a thing…and why would it? I wonder what- if any - long-term societal effects of this format will be on the generations of listeners and content providers? Will the world survive long enough to look back on this period of time with any sort of nostalgic fondness? … Well, I suppose that remains to be seen.
