Episode #138 Features a Rare Triple Play with Major League Baseball Hall of Fame Pitcher, Jim Kaat, Barbecue News Magazine Publisher, Kell Phelps, and Podcaster, Gary Mack Jim Kaat writes in his new autobiography, Good As Gold:  My Eight Decades In Baseball,  "I am one of the few people alive who can truly say that virtually every dollar I have earned as an adult has been because of my involvement in the game of baseball, a game I have loved since 1945 when I was about seven years old."  The eight decades Jim writes about are filled with incredible stories of the many people he has been associated with in his 25 years as a player, his time as a pitching coach, and his many years as a broadcaster.  One such story is how Jim had the chance to be a "bonus baby" but his father knew best and helped Jim make a difficult decision that positively shaped his future.  Jim was a left-handed pitcher for the Washington Senators / Minnesota Twins, Chicago White Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Yankees, and St. Louis Cardinals.  He was a three-time All-Star and a Gold Glove winner for 16 seasons in a row.  He was Pete Rose's chosen pitching coach when Rose became the Cincinnati Reds manager.  Following coaching, he took up residence in various baseball broadcast booths, where he honed his craft and became a multi-Emmy-winning broadcaster.  His career, which is far from over, is culminating with his long-overdue election into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.        Kell Phelps is the publisher of the Barbecue News Magazine and recently acquired the National Barbecue Association (NBBQA).  Kell is someone we should have had on the show a long time ago, and what better way to begin the conversation with an apology for waiting this long to have him on.  It was definitely worth the wait as we discuss his significant role in the barbecue industry.  Have questions on what the NBBQA is and how it might help you?  Kell answers that.  Kell talks all about the wonderful things which being a part of the barbecue community offers.  If you have an interest in barbecue in any form, then you need to subscribe to Barbecue News Magazine.  Kell is an avid Atlanta Braves fan, and we discuss both baseball and barbecue. Gary Mack is the long-time host of the Mets Musings podcast, as well as co-hosting The Baseball Talk Radio Show with Rich Baxter.  He knows baseball very well and like any true baseball fan he is not without his opinions.  The All-Star game is coming up and fan voting has begun.  Join us for a lively discussion on our ballots. We recommend you go to BBQ Buddha, https://bbqbuddha.com/ for rubs and award-winning sauces https://baseballbbq.com for special grilling tools and accessories, and the Pandemic Baseball Book Club, https://www.pbbclub.com  to find many of the wonderful books we have featured as well as some additional swag, and Magnechef https://magnechef.com/ for excellent and unique barbecue gloves. We conclude the show with the song, "Baseball Always Brings You Home" by the musician, Dave Dresser, and the poet, Shel Krakofsky. We truly appreciate our listeners and hope that all of you are staying safe. Robin Roberts (September 30, 1926 – May 6, 2010) was a starting pitcher who pitched primarily for the Philadelphia Phillies (1948–1961). He spent the latter part of his career with the Baltimore Orioles (1962–1965), Houston Astros (1965–66), and Chicago Cubs (1966). He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1976.Roberts was born in Springfield, Illinois, the son of an immigrant Welsh coal miner. Robin arrived in East Lansing, Michigan as part of an Army Air Corps training program. He attended Lanphier High School and after World War II, Roberts returned to Michigan State College to play basketball, not baseball. Roberts led the Spartans' basketball team in field-goal percentage in 1946–1947, was captain of the team during the 1946–1947 and 1949–1950 seasons, and earned three varsity letters in basketball. After his second season playing basketball, Roberts tried out for the Michigan State baseball team, becoming a pitcher because it was the position that coach John Kobs needed most. After playing for Michigan State and spending his second summer playing in Vermont with the Barre–Montpelier Twin City Trojans, he was signed by the Phillies.

Lefty Gomez, Yankees Hall of Fame pitcher, was a treasure

I recently read Jane Leavy's excellent book, Big Fella, about Babe Ruth.  In it, she manages to uncover interesting nuggets about Ruth - especially in his youth - all sandwiched around a nationwide barnstorming trip Ruth and Yankees teammate Lou Gehrig took, following the New York Yankees historic 1927 season. In the book, Leavy mentioned Lefty Gomez, who pitched for the Yankees and Washington Senators and made it into the baseball Hall of Fame.  It got me to thinking about the time I interviewed Gomez, before the 1983 Carolina League All-Star game - which I broadcast - in Hagerstown, MD. Gomez was affable and shared some interesting insights in the interview including: His thoughts on Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak What it was like playing on those great Yankees teams, including what Ruth told him The salaries players were earning in 1983 compared to his era and his current regimen to maintain his health Gomez died nearly 30 years ago in February of 1989.  His interview is one I will always treasure.  I transferred it from a cassette tape and digitized it.  You may hear some warbling, but his insights are well worth any glitches that might be part of the recording.  Enjoy!
