Understanding the Importance of Financial ManagementIn a recent episode of "The Thoughtful Entrepreneur Show," host Josh sat down with Tom Griffiths, the founder and CEO of Synergy CFO Solutions, to delve into the critical role of financial management in small businesses. Tom's expertise in helping business owners understand their numbers, improve profits, and manage cash flow is invaluable for anyone looking to achieve long-term business success. This blog post will break down the key insights from their conversation, offering actionable advice and detailed explanations to guide you in optimizing your financial performance. Many business owners gauge their success by looking at their bank account balances or growth metrics. However, Tom Griffiths emphasizes that these indicators can be misleading. A healthy bank balance does not necessarily mean a business is profitable or has a stable cash flow. Tom suggests that businesses generating $1 to $4 million in revenue are typically ready for the level of financial guidance a fractional CFO can provide. This is the stage where financial complexity increases, and professional expertise becomes crucial. Evaluate your current financial management practices and identify gaps. If you find that financial tasks are becoming overwhelming or you're not making informed decisions, it might be time to bring in a fractional CFO.Synergy CFO Solutions offers a range of free resources on their website, including a cash flow forecast, webinars, and a report on the 16 drivers of revenue, profit, and cash flow. These resources are designed to help business owners gain clarity on their financial situation and make informed decisions. Take advantage of the free cash flow forecast tool to get a better understanding of your cash flow situation. Participate in webinars to learn from experts and gain new insights into financial management. Due to his financial background following the first eight years of his career in banking, he can look at a business and spot the underlying reasons why a business is not profitable and has poor cash flow. He understand both sides of a business (the financial side and the business ownership side). More importantly, he know how to fix it so that the business can grow and become more profitable.About Synergy CFO Solutions:Helps small business owners have a growing and more profitable business so they can achieve their personal and professional goals. The goal is simple: to help clients go from feeling overwhelmed, stressed about the finances, wondering "where did all the money go", to feeling confident, knowing that they're running their business like a CEO, with the numbers driving sound decision making. Done through a unique yet simple process, taking on the role of ‘financial guide', meeting the business owner on a regular basis. The process identifies the key drivers of the business, which are then used to help make decisions to grow profit and cash flow, in turn allowing the owner to achieve their goals.Apply to be a Guest on The Thoughtful Entrepreneur: https://go.upmyinfluence.com/podcast-guestLinks Mentioned in this Episode:Want to learn more? Hi friends, we're on hiatus for the fall. To tide you over, we're putting up some favorite episodes from our archives. Enjoy! ---- [originally aired February 17, 2021] Guess what folks: we are celebrating a birthday this week. That's right, Many Minds has reached the ripe age of one year old. Not sure how old that is in podcast years, exactly, but it's definitely a landmark that we're proud of. Please no gifts, but, as always, you're encouraged to share the show with a friend, write a review, or give us a shout out on social. To help mark this milestone we've got a great episode for you. My guest is the writer, Brian Christian. Brian is a visiting scholar at the University of California Berkeley and the author of three widely acclaimed books: The Most Human Human, published in 2011; Algorithms To Live By, co-authored with Tom Griffiths and published in 2016; and most recently, The Alignment Problem. It was published this past fall and it's the focus of our conversation in this episode. The alignment problem, put simply, is the problem of building artificial intelligences—machine learning systems, for instance—that do what we want them to do, that both reflect and further our values. This is harder to do than you might think, and it's more important than ever. As Brian and I discuss, machine learning is becoming increasingly pervasive in everyday life—though it's sometimes invisible. It's working in the background every time we snap a photo or hop on Facebook. Companies are using it to sift resumes; courts are using it to make parole decisions. We are already trusting these systems with a bunch of important tasks, in other words. And as we rely on them in more and more domains, the alignment problem will only become that much more pressing. In the course of laying out this problem, Brian's book also offers a captivating history of machine learning and AI. Since their very beginnings, these fields have been formed through interaction with philosophy, psychology, mathematics, and neuroscience. Brian traces these interactions in fascinating detail—and brings them right up to the present moment. As he describes, machine learning today is not only informed by the latest advances in the cognitive sciences, it's also propelling those advances. This is a wide-ranging and illuminating conversation folks. And, if I may say so, it's also an important one. Brian makes a compelling case, I think, that the alignment problem is one of the defining issues of our age. And he writes about it—and talks about it here—with such clarity and insight. I hope you enjoy this one. And, if you do, be sure to check out Brian's book. Happy birthday to us—and on to my conversation with Brian Christian. Enjoy! A transcript of this show is available here. The science fiction fantasy of machine consciousness is swiftly moving towards becoming a reality. In 2021 a Google engineer was fired after publicly claiming the LaMDA chatbot he'd been testing was sentient, and last year the chief scientist of the company behind ChatGPT tweeted that some of most cutting-edge AI networks might be "slightly conscious". So what would it mean for humans if AI technology became conscious? And how would we even know they were? Computer scientist Brian Christian is the author of The Alignment Problem, Algorithms to Live By (with Tom Griffiths), and The Most Human Human. He is part of the AI Policy and Governance Working Group at the Institute for Advanced Study.

This week Elon Musk and Apple's co founder Steve Wosniak were among signatories to an open letter calling for a six-month pause in the training of systems more powerful than GPT-4. They're part of a growing chorus worried that the unchecked speed of AI development could result in unintended harm. Computer scientist and author Brian Christian writes about one of the fundamental problems of AI development in his book The Alignment Problem: how do we ensure machine learning systems represent the best human values rather than magnify the worst? Christian is also the bestselling author of Algorithms to Live By (with Tom Griffiths), and The Most Human Human. He holds degrees in philosophy, computer science, and poetry and is a visiting scholar at the University of California, Berkeley. The Rational Use of Cognitive ResourcesPsychologists and computer scientists have very different views of the mind. Psychologists tell us that humans are error-prone, using simple heuristics that result in systematic biases. Computer scientists view human intelligence as aspirational, trying to capture it in artificial intelligence systems. How can we reconcile these two perspectives? In this talk, I will argue that we can do so by reconsidering how we think about rational action. Psychologists have long used the standard of rationality from economics, which focuses on choosing the best action without considering the computational difficulty of that choice. By using a standard of rationality inspired by computer science, in which the quality of the outcome trades off with the amount of computation involved, we obtain new models of human behavior that can help us understand the cognitive strategies that people adopt. I will present examples of this approach in the context of human decision-making and planning, including complex planning problems such as the game of chess.

In today's episode, we're speaking with Tom Griffiths, CEO & Co-Founder of Hone, a live learning platform that has raised over $50 Million in funding. Here are the most interesting points from our conversation: Pivot to Success: The transition from Hub Dub to Fanduel demonstrated the power of data-driven pivots, leading to a new category in daily fantasy sports. Creating a New Category: Tom's experience with Fanduel taught him the importance of being one step removed from an existing category to facilitate understanding and adoption. Navigating Legal Challenges: Facing regulatory scrutiny and legal challenges helped refine and solidify Fanduel's position in the market. Leveraging Customer Stories: Using customer testimonials and feedback as a powerful tool to highlight Hone's unique value proposition in the competitive corporate training space. CEO Transition: The shift from CPO to CEO involves embracing broader decision-making responsibilities and being the company's face to drive vision and growth. Higher Purpose: Tom finds a deeper fulfillment in Hone's mission, impacting both professional and personal development for learners through transformational live classes.
Chris Wallace, from the Faculty of Business, Government, and Law at the University of Canberra, reflects on federal politics in 2022, after the last sitting of federal parliament came to a close. Chris discusses the passing of legislation on the federal anti-corruption body (NACC) and the Secure Jobs, Better Pay Bill, plus the censure of former PM Scott Morrison after the release of the Bell report into his secret Ministries arrangement. Professor Brendan Crabb AC, Director and CEO of the Burnet Institute, speaks directly and in-depth about the scientific reality of COVID-19 for everyone in Australia right now. Now in our fourth wave this year and with cases in the past week estimated at between 500,000 to 1 million (5 to 10 times the reported cases), what are the consequences of the unmitigated spread of COVID-19? What makes COVID truly exceptional? How do we stop transmission, and what are the risks of repeated infection? With a federal inquiry into Long COVID underway, Brendan explains the most up to date scientific thinking behind the causes and effects of Long COVID and what patients need the most – to be believed and understood. As COVID is not just a respiratory condition, but an "inflammatory disease of your blood vessels," Brendan explains what kinds of post-COVID complications are possible for some, like stroke, diabetes, pulmonary embolism (PE), and heart attack. All this and more is discussed in a nuanced and wide-ranging interview. Geelong Gallery Director Jason Smith speaks about their latest exhibition, Mandy Martin – A Persistent Vision. An Australian environmental and feminist artist, the late Mandy Martin is considered "a landscape artist of national stature" – Tom Griffiths. Jason discusses the range of works on display, including the late artist's video collaboration with Alexander Boynes and composer-musician Tristen Parr, called Luminous Relic (2017). It's a panoramic piece that combines traditional oil painting with video projection and a music composition.

There are approximately 560 marinas in the UK. Historically marinas have been operated by private individuals and many still are, but as private equity have taken an interest in the sector, we have started to see the emergence of a two-tier market. The first was when Premier Marinas were sold by Blackrock to Welcome Trust in 2015, followed by British Waterways (now known as Aquavista) to Lloyds Capital in 2018 and who have most recently added Castle Marinas to their portfolio in 2021. As with holiday parks the stable income stream derived from mooring fees is what has attracted them to the sector making them good investments, and with a third of marina operators reporting occupancy levels at 100% in 2020 with less than a quarter having an occupancy rate of lower than 85%, the sector has proven incredibly resilient through the Covid disruption.Join Guy Ruddle and sector specialists: Ian Simpson, head of the leisure and trade related team; Kay Griffiths, associate director in the leisure and trade related team; and, Tom Griffiths, associate in the leisure and trade related team as they discuss how the marina market has evolved over the years, where investment activity is coming from, can occupancy levels be sustained and what opportunities there are in the market.

Brian Christian probably has a better handle of the human aspects of artificial intelligence than any other writer today. He recently published The Alignment Problem, his third book on this theme. His first was The Most Human Human, an exploration of what AI can tell us about what makes us human, and his second was Algorithms to Live By (co-authored with cognitive scientist Tom Griffiths), an exploration of what AI can tell us about how to be better humans. Brian's latest installment explores how humans can make better AI. That is, better not in the algorithmic sense, but in the societal sense. At any rate, I loved talking to him. We have lots of overlapping interests, as my academic training has mostly been in computational cognitive science and my interests mostly skewing towards the more humanistic aspects of it. Brian also has an MFA in poetry. Which I think is super badass. (Part 2 to follow at an undisclosed point in the future...)
Brian Christian is the author of The Most Human Human, which was named a Wall Street Journal bestseller, a New York Times Editors’ Choice, and a New Yorker favorite book of the year. He is the author, with Tom Griffiths, of Algorithms to Live By, a #1 Audible bestseller, Amazon best science book of the year and MIT Technology Review best book of the year. And his newest book is The Alignment Problem: Machine Learning and Human Values. AI has been a very hot topic of discussion among business leaders over the past few decades, and there are varying degrees of worry. Today Brian is sharing his view on AI and machine learning and whether we should be worried or not. He also explains why everyone should get to know more about AI, even if you aren’t in a technical role. In this episode of the podcast we explore: The history of AI and machine learning How questions from Elon Musk pushed Brian to write his book, The Alignment Problem What is supervised learning vs. reinforcement learning in regards to AI Potential problems we should look out for when it comes to AI What is an algorithm and what goes into creating one Advice for people who want to be more aware of this realm
The ABM Conversations Podcast - for B2B marketing professionals
In this episode, Tom Griffiths, CRO at TalkAItive, joins us to share his insights on how to leverage NLP and sentiment analysis in improving the relevance of your product with your customers and target audience. He talks about: --> What is sentiment analysis and how it works? --> How do we use AI to analyze the context of something and more importantly to understand the momentum behind conversations? --> Does collecting feedback using a bot really help? Does it motivate people to really share what they feel, in comparison to talking to a real person on the phone or a zoom call for that matter? --> Can NLP be useful in a workplace environment to understand the real workplace issues like sexual harassment, which is usually hard to prove? and a lot more...
Algorithms to Live By from authors Ben Christian and Tom Griffiths, looks at how to apply computer algorithms, such as caching, sorting, or scheduling to your everyday life. In this episode, Kyle and Mark attempt to wrap their heads around the proposed algorithms. Find out what they thought and more in this episode of The Productivity Lab.
Julia chats with the authors of Algorithms to Live By, about how to apply key algorithms from computer science to our real life problems. For example, deciding which apartment to rent, planning your career, and prioritizing your projects. In the process, they discuss the assumptions that underlie those algorithms (and what to do about the fact that those assumptions are inevitably violated by the messy real world), and why procrastination might actually be the right algorithm for the wrong problem. Sped up the speakers by ['1.11', '1.2', '1.0']
You've probably heard about cognitive biases -- the systematic errors human brains make when we try to reason or make decisions. But what if our biases are actually a sign of rationality? This episode features Tom Griffiths, professor of cognitive science at University of California, Berkeley and the director of the Computational Cognitive Science lab. Tom makes the case for why our built-in reasoning strategies might be optimal after all. Sped up the speakers by ['1.14', '1.0']
If you ever struggle to make decisions, here's a talk for you. Cognitive scientist Tom Griffiths shows how we can apply the logic of computers to untangle tricky human problems, sharing three practical strategies for making better decisions -- on everything from finding a home to choosing which restaurant to go to tonight. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
There's been a lot of negative press lately about algorithms (Facebook, Snapchat, the prison system). But this week we're exploring ways that mathematical and scientific algorithms can actually help improve how we live. Brian Christian co-wrote the book "Algorithms to Live By" with his friend, Tom Griffiths, a psychology and cognitive science professor at UC Berkeley. Brian is all about the intersection of technology and humanity, and figuring out how to use data to help people optimize their lives. In their book, Brian and Tom offer really practical applications for scientific principles, which we'll get to in a minute. But first, here's the catch: There's no formula for perfection. Even if you apply these algorithms to your life, things will go wrong. But by trying out these algorithms, you can statistically give it your best shot. In part one of this two-part series about practical applications for algorithms, Brian tells Manoush about six small changes anyone can try. 1. Temporal Locality This algorithm posits that the paper you're most likely to use next, is the last one you touched. So that pile of papers on your desk? You have a scientific reason to never organize them. The most relevant stuff will rise to the top. 2. The Search/Sort Trade-off If you tag and file your emails, you might be wasting your time. Weigh the amount of time you spend organizing against the amount of time it takes to use the good ol' search function. 3. Computational Kindness The next time you try to plan a meeting, skip the classic line, "I'm totally free." Brian calls this "Passing the computational buck." Instead, ask a binary question like "Are you free for dinner at 5 p.m. on Thursday?" It may go against the rules of etiquette, but setting a specific window for availability should be more efficient. 4. Cache Miss There's a fundamental trade-off between size and speed. The more we know — the more data we collect in our minds — the more likely we are to have a brain fart. 5. The Explore/Exploit Trade-off The more experiences you have, the less likely it is that something will blow your mind. That's why Manoush has such fond memories from a Squeeze concert she went to in ninth grade. It may not have actually been that incredible, but she had less to compare it to. 6. Radix Sort You might be compelled to sort your kid's Legos (or yours, this is a judgement-free zone) by color. But radix sort says efficiency trumps aesthetic. Try sorting by size instead. Click the "Listen" button above to hear Brian and Manoush talk all about how to use these algorithms to live a better life. And when you're done, check out part 2 of the series where Manoush tests some of them out.
