Transforming Food Waste Into Vegan Leather with Polybion's Axel Gómez-Ortigoza

ClimateBreak

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 14, 2023 1:45

Three Birds with One Stone: Addressing Three Environmental ProblemsPolybion's fabric technology addresses three major environmental problems: livestock, food waste, and plastic by replacing leather and plastic with fabric derived from food waste. Because the leather industry is so large, it helps drive cattle production separately from demand for meat. Deforestation due to industrial agriculture land use (which includes land for cattle and land for the crops cattle eat) contributes significantly to climate change and biodiversity loss; a 2018 study found that about 12.4 million acres of forest — the equivalent of more than five Yellowstone National Parks — are cut down each year to clear land for industrial agriculture. Much of this land is for cattle grazing and feed; cows are ruminants, and require greater amounts of nutrients compared to other animals like pigs and chickens. In addition, cow belching famously emits methane, a very potent greenhouse gas, into the atmosphere. Food waste is not just a waste of food; it also is a waste of resources used to make and transport food such as energy (including non-renewable energy), water, and land. Rotting food in landfills also emits large amounts of methane into the atmosphere. According to the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization, if global food waste were a country, it would have the third-biggest carbon footprint after the US and China. Finally, plastic trash pollution harms wildlife and humans, and plastics contribute greenhouse gas emissions as they break down. Sunlight and heat cause plastic to release methane and ethylene – and at increasing rates as plastic breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces. Polybion's “Celium” is a SolutionA startup called Polybion makes a new kind of leather designed to address these issues. Polybion feeds food waste to bacteria, and this bacteria produces cellulose, the base material for this new leather (what Polybion calls “Celium”). Derived from living matter, cellulose is an organic and biodegradable material, unlike the plastic from which most faux leather is derived. Polybion does not use livestock for its product.  Rather, it puts food waste to use, and can compete as a plastic-free alternative to other faux leather products. Polybion states that Celium is a “...versatile textile with endless design possibilities, it can be customized by color, graining, embossing, and water resistance—all while preserving its exceptional strength”. Celium is further advertised as the next eco-friendly generation of luxury leather: “Due to its biological nature, each piece of Celium™ is unique and distinct as a fingerprint, lending it the hallmark of luxury”.  Whether the marketplace agrees remains to be seen.Who is Axel Gómez-Ortigoza?Axel Gómez-Ortigoza is CEO and CTO of Polybion. He co-founded Polybion with his brother Alexis Gómez-Ortigoza along with Bárbara González-Rolón. Axel was included in MIT Technology Review's “Innovators under 35” in 2018. He is originally from Mexico. Learn More: Polybion Completes Development of World's First Bacterial Cellulose Biomanufacturing FacilityPolybion: The Future of BiomaterialsIs vegan leather worse for the environment than real leather?Food waste creates more greenhouse gases than the airline industry - The Washington Post

At least one in nine of the almost eight billion people who live on earth are undernourished. As the 18th century economist Robert Malthus forecast, we seem on a path where the planet can't produce enough food for the projected 10 billion people who will be alive in 2050. Climate change and wars will only make the global food situation more precarious. Is large scale famine inevitable? David Kaplan, a global leader in the new field of cellular agriculture, doesn't think so. He believes the steaks and fish fillets that he and other scientists are literally growing in their labs can eventually feed a hungry world. What do you think? Brett Thompson, co-founder and CEO of Mzansi Meat, on effective solutions in food systems:“I think there needs to be a bouquet of solutions. I don't think plant-based is the only solution; I don't think unprocessed, regenerative farming, any of those things alone are solutions  - rather I think you need to add a hell of a lot of things to it. And I think cultivated meat adds to that, because there's not one silver bullet. People want to eat meat, and this provides an opportunity… It's about how we innovate and improve that process.”Brett and co-founder Tasneem Karodia started the cultivated meat industry in Africa by establishing the first company of its kind on the continent. They introduce a more efficient, sustainable and ethical means of creating animal protein products, and have started with beef. Their methods contribute to long-term food security for many, and their harm-free, biology-driven approach is already inspiring other companies to venture into production in the region, sparking a needed industry, and a climate-friendly change. Find Brett on Twitter and Instagram: @BrettVThompson Find Mzansi on twitter: @MzansiMeatCo … and on LinkedIn

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: New Harvest, the nonprofit nucleus of cellular agriculture, is in crisis. Emergency town hall on 6/10., published by IshaDatar on June 2, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. As New Harvest approaches 20 years since our founding, we are in a funding crisis. With five months of runway to survive and experts recommending companies extend runway by 18-24 months, we urgently need at least $2 million by July 31 to fulfill our budget for the year and make it through giving season while keeping impact high. I am no longer confident that New Harvest will raise our budgeted total for the year. We have $1,056,228 in the bank and will spend $201,209 every month if we stick to our budgeted expenses. Unless something changes, New Harvest will run out of money October 31, 2022. I am usually very optimistic, coming into this field a decade ago when cultured meat was barely more than science fiction. Optimism and a long game approach has pushed our work forward and enabled New Harvest to literally build the field of cellular agriculture from scratch. But this recent economic downturn has forced our hand. The time has come to shift from a growth mindset to survival mode. Over the next few weeks, I will have to make several challenging decisions about the future of New Harvest. Unfortunately, staff cuts are unavoidable in order to prioritize impact, supporting our research grantees, and extending our runway beyond October. I am hosting an open town hall during our upcoming conference on June 10th at 3:30pm EST to answer questions as best I can and discuss the future of New Harvest. If you can't attend in-person, you can tune in and participate via livestream by registering here. A bit about New Harvest: Like I said, we've literally build the field of cellular agriculture from scratch. New Harvest founded the first companies, funded the first PhDs, laid the groundwork for the National Institute for Cell Ag, and has had our work cited by the world's leading climate scientists in the latest IPCC report. Heck, we coined the term cellular agriculture. I am posting here because after sending out an emergency email yesterday, I received a flood of responses asking: What about OPP? Is New Harvest getting any EA funding? New Harvest's first supporters were EA and our founder, Jason Matheny, continues to be active in the EA world. Despite being recommended by Animal Charity Evaluators as a standout charity and our donor base swinging EA, we haven't seen enough support come through to really sustain us. Here's how you can help: Every dollar counts to make it through Giving Season. You can donate here. Attend our town hall on June 10 at 3:30pm EST (taking place on day two of our upcoming conference in Brooklyn). You can tune in and participate virtually by registering here. If you're interested in making a major gift, get in touch at stephanie.b@new-harvest.org. Send intros and connections. Impact investors far outnumber those willing to philanthropically support an org building the root system and ecosystem that allow companies in the private sector to flourish. If you have suggestions for how to tap into the investment $$ sloshing around in alt protein, get in touch at isha@new-harvest.org. We're on the search for new funders and grant opportunities (ideally grants with quick turnaround that we can apply for with an agile and skeleton team). If you have any leads, please let me know (again: isha@new-harvest.org) I sincerely believe this will be just one short part of the much longer New Harvest story. New Harvest isn't going anywhere, but we have to make rapid and drastic changes to survive. Thanks for listening. Have you ever stopped and thought for a moment about the direction that food production is moving in this country? Of course, most of you will undoubtedly say "no" while proudly proclaiming that you continue to "not consider" how food is being produced in the future either. But that is ok because the Plant Base Riot has your back. We are here to inform you of the almost Orwellian methodology the modern industry is using to grow your meat! That's right, I did say grow..... your.... meat. Cellular agriculture has shoved its way into the food production floor and is beginning to gain notice and momentum. So what is cellular agriculture? Well, I am glad we now have your attention! This food production method seems to fuse sea monkey cultivation, plant biopsies, and the reprogramming of animal stem cells to create a meaty medley within a single petri dish. But, all kidding aside, cellular agriculture produces animal-sourced foods (like milk, meat, eggs, and butter) that can be made without animals. Cellular engineers can replicate these products and other( Faux leather) by using a microbe like yeast or bacteria, stem cells, and growth media from bovine and the essential cellular components from plants. Ultimately, cellular agriculture will ensure that fast food goers will continue to wrap enormous lines around chain drive-throughs worldwide, as the cost of animal faux animal flesh will be cheaper than the real thing in due time. I'm looking in your direction In-and-out Burgar, don't think we have noticed your eternal lines and congestion that often interrupt traffic patterns throughout California. I have never seen so many people so damn eager to accelerate their progression to coronary heart disease than the staunch In and out patron. So what does all this mean? There are so many variables to consider with this never-before-seen food production procedure? For starters, lab-grown and 3D printed beef would give mother earth a long-overdue rest. We have been battering mother nature, our air quality, soil, and water supplies with unsustainable cattle production methods over the past 70 years. So lab-grown meat could be the answer we have been looking for to shut down the cattle, chicken, and pork cartels once and for all, Thus ultimately ending animal suffering while simultaneously reducing carbon footprints. On the other end, how might lab-grown meat impact human health? This product essentially transmits similar tones of issues surrounding genetically modified seeds that have been debated for nearly a decade now. Will cellular agriculture companies share space with other genetic puppet masters like Monsanto? Further, if lab-grown meat can successfully be produced on a monumental scale, will that droop the cost of animal abuse products on supermarket shelves worldwide, making it more accessible, affordable, and desirable. Can you imagine the health implications this new market would have on wellness? Americans are already fighting chronic disease on every conceivable front. We have cancer attacking us in the trenches, diabetes trying to flank us, Cardiovascular disease overhead providing air support for enemy forces, and chronic inflammation perched in the sniper's nest just waiting to pick its perfect shot. Is more meat, cheese, eggs, and mayo, all grown in a petri dish, really the best option in the ailing United States? Lastly, if no animals are harmed in lab-based meat production, how might this impact vegan and vegetarian lifestyles? Can we reenter the wild and eat "meat" once again? Follow the mettlesome trio as they examine the current but limited science surrounding Cellular Agriculture. Join Dan, Brian, and Mike as they peek behind this curtain of secrecy and decode the dietary deceptions to arm listeners with more information concerning their diet and health. “… a lot of the platform technologies do not make sense from a food perspective, and there's just never been a reason to do things a different way. So, for example, cell culture is very expensive and very resource intensive because the medical field doesn't really need those things to be done in a very cost-effective manner - because people, have a high cost thresh hold when it comes to paying for their own healthcare and drugs… But it's totally different when we're thinking about food.” – Natalie Rubio - Natalie Rubio Natalie Rubio recently made history as the first person on the planet to complete a PhD in cellular agriculture, which is the production of animal-sourced foods from cell culture or meat that is grown in a lab without using animals.  Her thesis: Entomoculture: Insect Cell Cultivation for Cellular Agriculture, makes the case for growing meat from insect cells. (Natalie also coined the term "entomoculture.") All of the above is beyond exciting for 8 million reasons, for Natalie and for all of humanity. Every milestone in the world of cellular agriculture, academically or as an industry, is a massive step toward building a food system that is sustainable and humane, a food system that does not involve factory farms, slaughterhouses, cruelty, and suffering.

Yet today the smart phone is owned by an estimate of 1 billion of the population, fits in the palm of your hand and is smarter than we ever thought possible. So, after many years of research and innovation, Cellular Agriculture meat products may not be as farfetched as we think.  We've already solved the problems of CellAg using science, engineering, and production, but it's the power of incorporating the technologies, skills and systems together to catapult it from an expensive lab creation to mass production, stocked on supermarket shelves around the world. In this episode of F&B Sound Bites, we revisit the topic of CellAg with two expert engineers from NZ and the US, teaming up to offer their perspective on the barriers, opportunities and future for CellAg.  Find out just how close CellAg is to becoming an alternative, more sustainable, food source and what you need to be doing today to get ready.

My guest Jim Mellon is an accomplished investor, entrepreneur, author and philanthropist. His most recent book called "Moo's Law" focuses on the investment opportunities in the field of cellular agriculture, which is a production of proteins and materials directly from stem cells.  Jim Mellon co-founded Agronomics to invest in a portfolio of leading companies in this sector, as he is its largest investor. In this conversation, we dig into this new area, we talk about the case for change, the challenges and opportunities, some of the people, and some of the nations that are driving and supporting these forward thinking cell-ag companies. What We Cover:  - How Jim developed his interest in biotech, longevity and cellular agriculture - Why industrial agriculture needs to change and what cell-ag offers to the world - The concepts of Moo's Law and griddle parity  - Which different categories of industry cellular agriculture are disrupting and revolutionising - The current state of cell-ag markets and products, and why Middle Eastern countries are faster to adopt this new industry - What challenges are facing the ramp up of cell-ag - The attractive characteristics of cell-ag companies for investors  - When we can expect cell-ag meat and fish to enter the European and US markets on larger scale Key Learnings and Takeaways:  - Moo's law suggests that as scale increases in the manufacture of foods in laboratory conditions, the efficiency will go up and the price will come down - Food-insecure countries such as Middle Eastern countries which import most of their food, will provide a model for implementing cell-ag for larger markets, such as the UK, EU and USA - The challenges facing cell-ag industry are performance of the stem cell lines on massive scale, using animals to continually provide more stem cells, and the execution of startup companies in this field   Links and Resources Mentioned in This Episode:  - Agronomics https://agronomics.im/  - Juvenescence https://www.juvlabs.com/  - ‘Moo's Law: An Investor's Guide to the New Agrarian Revolution' by Jim Mellon https://mooslawbook.com/  - 'Juvenescence: Investing in the Age of Longevity' by Jim Mellon https://www.amazon.com/Juvenescence-Investing-longevity-Mellon-Jim/dp/0993047815/  - 'Cracking the Code: Understand and Profit from the Biotech Revolution That Will Transform Our Lives and Generate Fortunes' by Jim Mellon https://www.amazon.com/Jim-Mellon/dp/1119963184/  - Blue Nalu https://www.bluenalu.com/  - Ivy Farm Technologies https://www.ivy.farm/  - Mohnish Pabrai: Cloning, Learning from Charlie Munger, 100 Baggers on OutsideVoices https://outsidelens.com/mohnish-pabrai-cloning/ - Joel Greenblatt: The Common Sense of Long-Term Investing on OutsideVoices https://outsidelens.com/joel-greenblatt-the-common-sense-of-long-term-investing/ Connect with Mark Bidwell: - LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/markbidwell/  - Twitter https://twitter.com/markehb

“…because animal advocacy has now escaped advocacy and is entering different types of work, really science-oriented work…  maybe that was all it took in the first place. We just had such limited roles in the traditional sense of animal advocacy before. Because it was so communications driven… And so that's another reason why I'm so proud of how this field has developed is I think we've turned people into animal advocates by creating jobs that let that happen. It's such a special thing to be part of.” Isha Datar Isha Datar is the executive director of New Harvest, the global nonprofit that Isha is executive director of New Harvest, a nonprofit research institute that funds open, public cultured meat research. In 2010 while still an undergrad, Isha wrote a paper called “Possibilities for an in vitro meat production system.” This was among the few papers to ever discuss cultured meat in academic literature and a few years before anyone had tasted the world's first cultivated meat ball. It was the beginning of Isha's quest to establish the field of animal products made without using any animals. Isha has been executive director of New Harvest since 2013. She's also co-founded Muufri (now Perfect Day Foods), where they make milk without cows and Clara Foods, where they make eggs without chicken. In 2015, Isha coined the term "cellular agriculture" — officially creating a category for agriculture products produced from cell cultures rather than whole plants or animals. Cellular agriculture is the future of food and Isha is one of its greatest pioneers.

Cellular agriculture is not a concept you hear about every day - but it soon might be. You've heard about lab grown meat. We can also produce some dairy proteins using genetically modified yeasts. Technological innovation is allowing a wide variety of food products and ingredients to be produced outside of traditional agricultural production. In this episode, Mike has a conversation with Dr. Lenore Newman of the University of the Fraser Valley to get her perspective on what's coming and what it means for food supply and food security.
