Meaningful relationships are mutual. Balanced with give and take, equal influence between partners, and a vibrant dance of loving responsiveness and caring attention.Marriage and Family Therapist and professor Dr. Jessica ChenFeng is calling us toward a more justice-oriented approach to relationships and to mental health and well-being, She invites us to open-hearted and empathic perspective taking, and seeking an integrated wholeness that incorporates all of who we are—highlighting the gift of mutuality in our most intimate relationships in marriage and family life.In this conversation with Jessica ChenFeng, we discuss:The importance of integrated and whole experience of ourselves—allowing racial, gender, and cultural identities to weave together in our sense of vocation and contribution to the worldThe importance of mutuality in relationships—but particularly in marriage and family systems. The ways emotional power flows in a relationship and impacts marriage and family dynamicsThe difference between partners focusing on meeting their individual needs and caring for the health of an intimate relationshipAnd she offers a guided practical exercise to help us lovingly notice and accept our inner experience with a heart open to justice, vulnerability, and the reminder that we are beloved in the eyes of God.Episode Highlights"Systems of power harm everyone—and to live life to the full, we have to see each other fully.""I believe our move toward life to the full requires us to see the world through a third-order lens: not just family systems, but the racial, gender, and societal systems they exist within.""Mutuality means not just expressing our needs but being willing to be changed by the needs of others.""If we're not attuned to the pleasant sensations in our bodies, we miss the invitations to thrive.""Cultural norms are not God-given realities; they are social constructs we are invited to discern and transform.""Knowledge without authentic relationship keeps us from truly seeing the embodied experiences of others."Helpful Links and ResourcesCheck out the programs in Marriage & Family Therapy at Fuller School of Psychology www.fuller.edu/school-of-psychology/Fuller Asian American Center aac.fuller.edu/Socio-Emotional Relationship Therapy (SERT) OverviewCircle of Care Model ExplainedPositive Psychology and EmotionsJeanne Tsai's Research on Culture and EmotionAsian American Values Scale ReferenceRace and Trauma ResourcesJeanne Tsai's research on culture and emotion – Stanford SPARQJohn and Julie Gottman Relationship ResearchAsian American Values Scale – Paniagua & Yamada (Academic resource)Show NotesJessica ChenFeng shares her "yes and" identity as a second-generation Taiwanese American grounded in both math and creativity. How earthy aesthetics and connection to nature shape Jessica's professional and personal flourishing. The integration of Christian faith with clinical work at Fuller Seminary."Seeing systems of systems" — why thriving requires understanding how race, gender, and cultural forces shape individuals and families.Introduction to socio-emotional relationship therapy (SERT) and the value of mutuality in relationships.Defining mutuality: mutual attunement, mutual influence, mutual vulnerability, and mutual relational responsibility."Mutuality asks: Are both people tending to the relationship itself?"Practical signs of mutual and non-mutual relationships, including emotional attunement and willingness to be influenced. The importance of humility and relational awareness in building mutual relationships. The Circle of Care model: cultivating healthy relational dynamics through attunement and responsiveness.Discerning relational power dynamics in marriages, friendships, and work relationships."Thriving is an open heart, even on a stressful day."How emotional self-control in Asian American cultures is often rooted in relational ethics, not personal repression. The risk and gift of navigating cross-generational emotional communication in immigrant families.Differentiated selfhood: balancing authenticity with cultural respect in relational dynamics.Race, culture, and relational healing: why systems of privilege harm everyone."Love your neighbor as yourself" as an ethic for mutual flourishing across racial and cultural difference.Building trust by leaning into discomfort and courageous conversations. The need for embodied encounters with real people beyond theories of race and difference.Mindfulness practice: Jessica leads a guided exercise in attuning to pleasant sensations in the body. The transformational power of positive emotions and embodiment for creativity and resilience. The relational impact of systemic racialization and why "colorblindness" fails to honor real lived experience.Final reflections: How knowing who we are through systemic and relational lenses allows deeper thriving.Pam King's Key TakeawaysEach of us in the human family is a beloved child of God—and we need to continue to shape society to reflect this foundational truth. The path to meaning and fulfillment in a relationship starts with noticing and acknowledging the flow of emotional power, and its destination is mutuality and humilityThriving means incorporating all of who we are—our heritage and histories especially—into our love of ourselves, our love of others, and love of God.Our intimate relationships need care and attention as a third reality beyond our selves and our partners. And finally, thriving means opening our hearts each day, connecting our inner and relational realities, and learning to love patiently the multitudes we all contain.About Jessica ChenFengDr. Jessica ChenFeng is Associate Professor at the School of Psychology & Marriage and Family Therapy at Fuller Seminary, and is also Director of the Asian American Well-being Collaboratory at Fuller's Asian American Center. Dr. Hannah Spier, a psychiatrist from Zurich, Switzerland, calls herself an "anti-feminist psychiatrist.” We delve into the complexities of women's mental health, particularly how feminist ideologies can lead to feelings of inadequacy and burnout. Hannah shares her insights from years of treating women who often find themselves stuck in therapy, grappling with anxiety and unfulfilled desires, particularly around relationships and motherhood. We explore the concept of dating with intention, emphasizing the importance for women of knowing what we want while we still retain the advantages of youth. Hannah discusses the common patterns she sees in her patients, such as the pressure to achieve academically while neglecting emotional needs, which can lead to a cycle of anxiety and dissatisfaction. We also touch on the societal expectations placed on women and how these can create a disconnect between their true desires and their life choices.Throughout our conversation, we challenge the notion of self-esteem and discuss the role of gratitude in overcoming resentment. Hannah argues that understanding the realities of both women's and men's experiences can help shift perspectives and foster healthier relationships. This episode aims to provoke thought about the choices women make and the societal narratives that shape those choices, ultimately encouraging listeners to reflect on their own paths and desires.Hannah Spier is a Norwegian-born medical doctor trained in Psychiatry in Norway and Switzerland, with a degree in Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy from the University of Zurich. Now based in Zurich with her husband and three children, she launched the Psychobabble publication and podcast in October 2022 to challenge postmodern influences and champion traditional values in the mental health field.YouTube: @psychobabblewithspierPsychobabble Substack 00:00 Start[00:01:27] Anti-feminist psychiatrist explained.[00:07:26] Biological clock and priorities shift.[00:11:08] Success redefined for mothers.[00:14:06] Choices and leverage for women.[00:20:18] Biological realities of women's choices.[00:25:46] Antidote to resentment is gratitude.[00:30:00] Narcissism and self-perception.[00:34:48] Resentment in motherhood and relationships.[00:36:10] Women's relationship goals and challenges.[00:43:34] Choosing the right partner.[00:48:05] Evolutionary psychology and motherhood.[00:52:17] Dating with intention.[00:54:23] Postmodernism's impact on self-improvement.[01:02:27] Expecting more from ourselves.[01:03:21] Flaws in psychiatric treatment.[01:10:06] Maternal instincts and self-care.[01:15:36] Lies of feminism.[01:16:43] Vulnerability and relationship dynamics.[01:22:01] Confusion between love and passion.[01:28:06] Healing from domestic violence.[01:30:14] Maternal instincts and nurturing energy.ROGD REPAIR Course + Community gives concerned parents instant access to over 120 lessons providing the psychological insights and communication tools you need to get through to your kid. Have you heard of a Feminist Therapist? In this week's episode I am joined by Vania, a Feminist Therapist and expert in her field in helping people heal from gender-based violence, abuse, and related trauma. From a young age, Vania has always had a strong awareness and passion for gender equality. Through her own life experiences and experience working with many abused women shelters around Toronto and overseas led her to focus on her area of expertise into becoming a Feminist Therapist. Vania shares further aspects of what Feminist Therapy is and how it differs, involving somatic-based therapy which intentionally uses knowledge from the body and our own nervous system, and feminist narrative therapy which looks at your life stories and how they have shaped the way you think and act. Vania predominantly works with women and new parents in assisting them on the journey into parenthood focusing on healing trauma, breaking those ancestral cycles and generational patterns. I absolutely loved this chat with Vania, which is extremely raw and thought-provoking, it may get you thinking back to your teenage years…it certainly did me! Happy New Year. I really hope this year is less hard, that it doesn’t feel as heavy, that we get a handle on the pandemic and that we can truly change systems of oppression that are not working for us and the world. There’s a lot to look at there. My guest this episode is Lauren Reid, PhD. Dr. Reid is an Assistant Professor of Counseling and coordinates the multicultural curriculum for the Graduate Program in Counseling at Arcadia University in Pennsylvania. She also conducts research on multicultural training and counselors' development. Dr. Reid is a licensed psychologist; her private practice specializes in working with biracial/multiracial people and women of color. This conversation centered around her research and work with biracial clients but dovetailed into topics like decolonizing therapy, disrupting systems of oppression and white supremacy, motherhood, and even President Obama. In this episode, Dr Rebekah Shallcross and I tackle some big questions – what is the antidote to the oppression of womxn, what is a true ‘choice' vs what we do because of hitting upon the barriers set up by white heteronormative patriarchy, and how does the pressure of the patriarchy impact womxn's mental health? Although a tough topic, we also bring some light and humour to this, considering how to break the 'good girl' narrative through allowing ourselves the permission to be non-productive and rest. Dr Rebekah Shallcross, or Bekah, is a qualified Clinical Psychologist, Researcher and Feminist. In 2020, she founded The Feminist Therapy Centre (FTC) which aims to offer an alternative to main stream mental health practice that is often based from the viewpoints of a white, male, heteronormative majority that dominates the highest positions of power within society, including the field of psychology. Through her work, Bekah uses a Feminist Therapy theoretical perspective that aims to liberate and empower those engaging with the service at both a personal and social level, both within and outside the therapy setting. 3:45 Why feminism and psychology? 7:35 The antidote to oppression is recognising it 8:05 Internalised patriarchy 9:12 Why the white heteronormative patriarchy is a problem for everyone 10:45 Patriarchy is even bad for men 13:25 Can choice exist when oppression creates so many barriers? 13:55 True choice comes without expectations 14:41 How flexible is flexible working? 18:08 The pressures modern women face 19:23 Structural inequalities in parental leave 20:20 A solution to the problems of shared parental leave 21:15 Becoming the default parent - 'shefault' 25:55 How the coronavirus pandemic has affected women 28:37 Why women shouldn't need to teach feminism to men 32:20 Avoiding the emotional labour of education 36:05 You don't always have to be productive 41:29 Bekah's takeaway for you Bekah recommended Bear Hebert and Dr. Sarah Coxon during our conversation. Do you ever feel you are just “therapizing” your clients to try and “be OK” with a bad system? Often when caseloads are high we can get stuck in a role of treating the individual when the mental health professional within us knows that the individual is not the real problem. We are talking systems of oppression like patriarchy, racism, anti LGBTQ+ prejudice. In this episode Dr Rebekah Shallcross tells us how her work with the Feminist Therapy Centre aims to create social change through psychology. Listen in for inspiration and a call to action! Full show notes and links available at psychologists.drrosie.co.uk Interview Highlights Bekah's Passion for Feminist Psychology Personally, as a relatively new mother, the systems I was working in no longer were working for me – I was stuck on a band, no permanent contracts – working more than my hours for the benefit of others – not really making the difference that I wanted to see in the world. So I left and I am now knee deep in birthing the Feminist Therapy Centre which aims to be an alternative the mainstream psychology which centres white, male, heteronormative standpoint. It aims to take account of systems of oppression and how this is really fucking up peoples mental health. And it aims to bring that into the consciousness of people I work with who often times have so internalised patriarchal narratives that they are now oppressing themselves. If you don't mind talking personally, I think it would really help to illustrate the point, how did patriarchy show up in your life? o At points my weight has been unhealthy low o I had a nose job at the age 25 o I got married because that's what you do at 27 – and the feeling of stuckness without know what was ‘wrong' left me with very poor mental health - divorced by the time I was 32 o I have used alcohol as very unhelpful ways of coping o I'm queer, I'm bisexual and I never let myself be that because for me, being brought up in a religious household, heteronormative ideals were presented as the only way to have a normal life o I haven't followed my dreams and desires because I just thought they were for other people, I thought they might upset other or I didn't think I was good enough Really starting this business is also a way of liberating myself from limiting beliefs about what is and isn't possible for me The people that have supported the feminist therapy centre Business coaching! The wonderful Lucy Sheridan and Tessa Clarke The powerhouse who is Emma Svanberg @mumologist whom I work with as part of the psychology collective along with other amazing psychologists Having a partner who is like – yep! Go for it! Who trusts in my ability to make this work Two action steps for psychologists and therapists Read about feminist therapy – it is intersectional in its nature and lots of things we already do – such as fully informed consent originates from the feminist therapy its just not acknowledge as its now just so much part of mainstream psychology. Make sure you are reading widely – look at your bookshelf – are all you books by white men? If so – why? Make sure you are ready women authors, trans authors, black authors, brown authors, queer authors, differently abled authors both psychologists and not! People who aren't academic (again so white and male) also have important things to say – so think about who are listening to and who you assume has knowledge worth listening to – and then question those assumptions Then put it into practice – ask your clients about the systems that oppress them – how has it affected them Socials Insta: @dr_rebekah_shallcross Website: www.thefeministtherapycentre.co.uk @mamafeminologist Links Join the 5 day blogging Challenge Ever stared at a blank screen watching the cursor blink at you mockingly? The Modern Therapist's Survival Guide with Curt Widhalm and Katie Vernoy
Is Therapy an Opiate of the Masses? Curt and Katie chat about how therapy can collude with the status quo and has historically failed to serve marginalized populations. We talk about the risks of therapy that doesn’t honor the context and systems within which people and families operate. We look at how therapists can create complacence and obedience if not careful. It’s time to reimagine therapy and what it means to be a therapist. To support you as a whole person and a therapist, your hosts, Curt Widhalm and Katie Vernoy talk about how to approach the role of therapist in the modern age. In this episode we talk about: Criticisms of therapy as an opiate of the masses Does therapy reinforce the status quo? “Normal” as a culture bound concept Feminist Therapy, Liberation Psychology, Decolonized Therapy The history of pathologizing or demonizing LGBTQ+ Therapy as a white construct Bias in MMPI and re-norming How bias toward “normal” permeates clinical work How therapists reinforce systems norms, encouraging placating the system First, Second, and Third Order change – Individual within family within the systems within which the family operates Individual versus collective change The challenge of assessing and treating within the complex overlay of systems The limitations of evidence-based treatments The vision of acceptance of diversity Therapist training gaps The Seven-Eyed Model of Supervision Impacts for case conceptualization Looking at clients as agents of change, as impacted by their context Validating experiences, increasing resilience and capacity, empowering client to make larger changes Suggesting coping skills without diminishing systemic impacts Therapy as a bandaid “As therapists, we can do a really good job of moving people to complacence if we’re not careful.” – Katie Helping individuals to heal, then moving to “now that” The requirement for therapists to be advocates for change within their communities Our Generous Sponsor: Brighter Vision Hey Modern Therapists! In this episode, we playfully explore the territory of embodiment and creativity with Karen Wallace, M.Ed. BCATR. We speak about trauma, creativity, play, making things, and so much more. This conversation was so personally enriching for me! Karen has a wealth of knowledge and experience in working with people of diverse backgrounds and ages. She’s written a gorgeous book called “There is No Need To Talk About This: Poetic Inquiry from the Art Therapy Studio.” Many of her poems are simply stunning and she reads several during our conversation. In her private practice, Karen draws on a wide variety of theories to create an integrative approach. She is client-centered and uses techniques and theories which 'fit' the client. She is a practicing artist and combines theories in a very creative way in her practice to facilitate clients' journeys through change. She embodies a wealth of education and experience. Some of the tools she uses in her work are sand tray, all forms of art making, Focusing, Narrative Therapy, Feminist Therapy, journal and creative writing, movement, Somatic Experiencing techniques, stress reduction techniques, EMDR, meditation techniques and play therapy. She and her husband, Patrick Lewis, have just finished their new book called: Trauma-Informed Teaching through Play, Art, Narrative. The Spiral Dance has been continuously in print for thirty years and revised twice; in 1999 HarperSanFrancisco published the Twentieth Anniversary Edition. Truth or Dare: Encounters with Power, Authority, and Mystery won the Media Alliance Meritorious Achievement Award for nonfiction in 1988. Starhawk’s first novel, The Fifth Sacred Thing, won the Lambda award for best Gay and Lesbian Science Fiction in 1994. Many of Starhawk’s political essays were collected into her book Webs of Power: Notes from the Global Uprising, which won a 2003 Nautilus Award from the trade association NAPRA. Her first picture book for children, The Last Wild Witch, earned a silver Nautilus from NAPRA in 2010. Starhawk is one of the prominent leaders in the revival of earth-based spirituality and Goddess religion. She is a cofounder of Reclaiming, an activist branch of modern Pagan religion, and continues to work in close collaboration with the Reclaiming community. Her archives are maintained at the Graduate Theological Union Library in Berkeley, California. In the late ’80s, she consulted on and co-wrote the popular trio of films known as the Women’s Spirituality Series, directed by Donna Read Cooper for the National Film Board of Canada: Goddess Remembered, The Burning Times, and Full Circle. The trilogy was in the top ten of sales and rentals for the Film Board for over a decade.Starhawk and Donna Read Cooper formed their film company, Belili Productions, to make documentaries on women and the earth. Their first release was Signs Out of Time (2004), a documentary on the life of archaeologist Marija Gimbutas, the scholar who made major discoveries about the Goddess cultures of Old Europe. Starhawk and Donna’s second documentary, Permaculture: The Growing Edge, was released in 2010. Starhawk has also made several short documentaries which can be found on YouTube: The Spiral Dance Ritual, Reclaiming’s Spiral Dance: Three Decades of Magic, and Permaculture Principles at Work, with nearly 200,000 views. Starhawk is a veteran of progressive movements, from anti-war to anti-nukes, and is deeply committed to bringing the techniques and creative power of spirituality to political activism. She is a founder of Earth Activist Trainings (EAT), teaching permaculture design grounded in spirit and with a focus on organizing and activism. Together with Charles Williams and others, she co-teaches EAT courses in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. She also champions ‘social permaculture’: the application of permaculture principles to social organizations, policy, and strategy. Since its first course in May of 2001, Earth Activist Trainings has graduated over 1000 students who now shepherd projects that range from community power-down strategies in Iowa City to water catchment programs in Bolivia, from inner city gardens in San Francisco to programs in the West Bank of Palestine. Starhawk’s tapes and CDs include “Wicca for Beginners” (2002), “Wiccan Rituals and Blessings” (2003), and a four-CD set “Earth Magic” (2006), all produced by Sounds True. She holds a B.A. in Fine Arts from U.C.L.A. In 1973, as a graduate student in Film at U.C.L.A, Starhawk won the prestigious Samuel Goldwyn Creative Writing Award. She received an M.A. in Psychology with a concentration in Feminist Therapy from Antioch University West in 1982. She has taught in many Bay Area colleges and universities, including John F. Kennedy University, Antioch West, the Institute of Culture and Creation Spirituality at Holy Names College, and Wisdom University. She is presently adjunct faculty at the California Institute of Integral Studies.Starhawk travels internationally, lecturing and teaching permaculture, earth-based spirituality and ritual, and the skills of activism. She lives part-time in San Francisco, in a collective house with her partner and friends. But much of her time is spent on Golden Rabbit Ranch in Western Sonoma County, where together with land manager Charles Williams she is developing a model of carbon-sequestering ranching, incorporating holistic management rotational grazing with sheep and goats, restorative forestry, food forests and perennial systems.
