Abstract: The menstrual cycle is known to influence the behaviour. The neuronal bases of this phenomenon are poorly understood. We hypothesized that hormones, might affect the large-scale organization of the brain functional networks and that, in turn, such changes might have behavioural correlates in terms of the affective state. To test our hypothesis, we took advantage of magnetoencephalography to investigate brain topology in early follicular, ovulatory and luteal phases, in twenty-four naturally-cycling women without signs of anxiety and/or depression. We show that in the alpha band the betweenness centrality (BC) of the right posterior cingulate gyrus (PCG) during the ovulatory phase is increased and the rise is predicted by the levels of estradiol. We also demonstrate that the increase in the BC is related to improved subjective well-being that, in turn, is correlated to the estradiol levels. The increased topological centrality of the PCG during the ovulatory phase could have implications in reproductive psychology. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info

Francesco Formisano shares how as a man in his 30s discovered the challenge, joy, and rewards of hunting. He was a wildlife photographer and veterinarian who was never involved on hunting until he found the intimacy with wild places and animals and was illuminated by the hunt. He soon realized the benefits of harvesting his own meat which led to a healthier lifestyle. As his life has been changed by hunting, his relationships went from, “Hi, how are you?” to, “When can we get back in the mountains and share a campfire?”

KGNU's Claudia Cragg speaks here with Ron Formisano about his new book, '' and what he sees as the permanent political class has emerged on a scale unprecedented in America's history. Formisano discusses what he sees as the self-dealing, nepotism, and corruption which contribute to rising inequality. Its reach, he says, extends from the governing elite throughout nongovernmental institutions. Aside from constituting an oligarchy of prestige and power it enables, he says, the creation of "an aristocracy of massive inherited wealth that is accumulating immense political power." In a muckraking tour de force reminiscent of Lincoln Steffens, Upton Sinclair, and C. Wright Mills, #AmericanOligarchy demonstrates the way the corrupt culture of the permanent political class extends down to the state and local level. Ron Formisano breaks down the ways this class creates economic inequality and how its own endemic corruption infects our entire society. Formisano delves into the work of not just politicians but lobbyists, consultants, appointed bureaucrats, pollsters, celebrity journalists, behind-the-scenes billionaires, and others. Their shameless pursuit of wealth and self-aggrandizement, often at taxpayer expense, rewards channeling the flow of income and wealth to elites. That inequality in turn has choked off social mobility and made a joke of meritocracy. As Formisano shows, these forces respond to the oligarchy’s power and compete to bask in the presence of the .01 percent. They also exacerbate the dangerous instability of an American democracy divided between extreme wealth and extreme poverty.
For Beyond 50's "Political" talks, listen to an interview with Ron Formisano. He is William T. Bryan Chair of American History and professor emeritus at University of Kentucky. Since the 1970s, government policies have contributed to the flow of wealth to the upper most income strata, i.e. the 1%. The United States now is more a plutocracy than a democracy. You'll learn about how this infrastructure of inequality, both open and hidden, obstructs the great majority of Americans from pursuing happiness, living healthy lives, and exercising basic rights. Formisano offers data-driven insight into the fallacy of widespread opportunity, the fate of the middle class, and the mechanisms that perpetuate income disparity. Dr Formisano talks to ecancertv at SABCS 2015 about the critical interaction between the estrogen receptor (ER) and amplification of the fibroblast growth factor receptor 1 (FGFR1) gene in endocrine resistant breast cancer. In the interview, Dr Formisano explains how targeting the FGFR1 gene in combination with anti-estrogen therapy may abrogate resistance and is worthy of further clinical investigation. Specifically he describes the findings of a study in which whole exome sequencing was used to evaluate tumour biopsies taken from 130 women with an operable ER-positive/HER2-negative breast cancer who had received endocrine treatment with an aromatase inhibitor for 10 to 21 days before surgery.
The growing gap between the most affluent Americans and the rest of society is changing the country into one defined—more than almost any other developed nation—by exceptional inequality of income, wealth, and opportunity. This book reveals that an infrastructure of inequality, both open and hidden, obstructs the great majority in pursuing happiness, living healthy lives, and exercising basic rights. A government dominated by finance, corporate interests, and the wealthy has undermined democracy, stunted social mobility, and changed the character of the nation. In this tough-minded dissection of the gulf between the super-rich and the working and middle classes, Ronald P. Formisano explores how the dramatic rise of income inequality over the past four decades has transformed America from a land of democratic promise into one of diminished opportunity. Since the 1970s, government policies have contributed to the flow of wealth to the top income strata. The United States now is more a plutocracy than a democracy.Formisano surveys the widening circle of inequality’s effects, the exploitation of the poor and the middle class, and the new ways that predators take money out of Americans’ pockets while passive federal and state governments stand by. This data-driven book offers insight into the fallacy of widespread opportunity, the fate of the middle class, and the mechanisms that perpetuate income disparity.ReviewAn accessible overview of recent trends in economic inequality.
