The world lost pioneering Down syndrome advocate Carl Erskine on April 16, 2024, at the age of 97. Carl and his wife Betty, were involved deeply with the Special Olympics and charities which aimed at helping people with developmental disabilities such as his son Jimmy. Carl Erskine was a MLB All-Star, World Series Champion, ally of Jackie Robinson and the last surviving member of the “Boys of Summer” Brooklyn teams of the 1950's. To honor Carl's life, we revisit our episode with documentarian Ted Green discussing his film 'The Best We've Got: The Carl Erskine Story'. As Ted says in this conversation, Carl and Betty are the perfect embodiment of what is on Jackie Robinson's tombstone.   “A life is not important except for the impact it has on other lives“. Playoff mode is activated as I'll uncover what the NBA & NHL has in store for the next few days. Plus, anything else that's happening in sports as the latest podcast has arrived. On deck: (4:00) We're two play-in games from the NBA playoffs tipping off on Saturday afternoon. The Lakers and Sixers have punched their tickets as #7 seeds in their respective conferences. As unconventional lower seeds that they are, could they be darkhorses to make deep runs in the postseason? I'll preview tomorrow night's do-or-die #8 seed games between Bulls-Heat and Kings-Pelicans. I'll unpack the top storylines of this year's playoffs (ex. Celtics scars/trustworthy, OKC title worthy?, Bucks expectations/fortitude and more) and preview the opening round of all the matchups as the quest for the Lawrence O'Brien Trophy commences this weekend. (41:15) Due to a strange quirk in the schedule, the NHL has a half dozen games out West today, but the East has completed all 82 of their games. I'll share my disdain for that, discuss the storylines of what may lie ahead (Rangers Cup threat, Leafs pressure, Oilers time to shine, a wide open field for a champion) as well as preview the East matchups since the West hasn't been settled as of yet. Hence, quirky schedule. (59:41) Sadly, there were a few deaths in baseball over the past few days. Hall of Fame manager of the Royals & Cardinals of the 70's & 80's, Whitey Herzog passed away at 92. The last living Brooklyn Dodger, Carl Erskine, died at 97. And former Oakland A's champion pitcher, Ken Holtzman died at 78. The longtime radio voice of the New York Yankees, John Sterling abruptly retired this week. I'll have a good thought about him and his career. I'll even get into how the Mets have won 10 of 13 after an 0-5 start. They'll have a litmus test this weekend as they go to LA to play the Dodgers for three games. I'll also take a look at the schedule to see if there are any interesting series on the docket. I'm honored to welcome in a new partnership to the podcast. Are you familiar with Olipop soda? SERIES 2 EPISODE 159: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: There's nothing better than a good NAP. “Now: Trump's head slowly dropped, his eyes closed. It jerked back upward. He adjusts himself. Then, his head droops again. He straightens up, leaning back. His head drops for a third time, he shakes his shoulders. Eyes closed still. His head drops. Finally, he pops his eyes open. My heart aches, and a drowsy numbness pains my sense, as though of hemlock I had drunk, or emptied some dull opiate to the drains." Honestly: You're Trump, on Monday they literally catch you napping. How do you possibly go in there yesterday and get caught napping… at least TWICE. One video, or one rapid-shutter sequence of still pictures of “Trump's head slowly dropped, his eyes closed. It jerked back upward. He adjusts himself. Then, his head droops again” and we don't have to WATCH the rest of the trial, he'd be DONE. Looks like we'll get this started Monday. Seven jurors chosen. I had forgotten what I learned during two days in the NYC jury pool in 2013: it is surprisingly easy to find enough people who don't know anything about anything to fill up a New York jury. Meanwhile Trump tried out his new defense: He knows nothing. Billionaire businessman, greatest mind of his or any other generation, but when it comes to paying off Stormy Daniels to bury her story and illegally keep bad facts about himself away from the eyes of the electorate weeks before the election, and then turning the thing into a clear crime by trying to write it off as a business expense? He knows nothing. He doesn't know the accountant. He doesn't know the lawyer. He didn't know anything about the document. He didn't know anything about the deduction. He just signed whatever they put in front of him. Because the billionaire businessman knows NOTHING about his own business! ALSO: The picture is a rare one of Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene with her mouth shut. It's in The New Republic and above it the magazine's question is: “Russia is Buying Politicians in Europe. Is it Happening Here Too?” After Greene decided to try to fire another Speaker of the House to destabilize our government further, and her screw-up in the Mayorkas hearing, it's a question worth exploring. B-Block (24:38) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Baseball's uniform scandal is back. The pitcher is wearing the batboy's pants. The Speaker of the House had his brain trust look at his new bill first: Libs of TikTok and DC Draino and a 1/6 defendant. And I used to think the Supreme Court Justices were merely not there to do justice or defend the constitution. Now I'm not sure they're from this country, nor have more of a legal education than I do (and I took one law class 37 years ago). C-Block (33:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Just passed the quarter century anniversary of one of the most fun, most unexpected events of my career. How many people do you know who can say this: Tom Hanks, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon pulled me on to the Red Carpet at the Oscars - and they broke my cummerbund!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

- Ebbets Field- Jackie Robinson- Ralph Branca- Carl Erskine- Brooklyn Dodgers -The Brooklyn Dodgers, beloved by generations of fans, bid farewell to Flatbush and headed west to Los Angeles, leaving a void in the hearts of their devoted followers. Yet, amidst the departure of this iconic baseball team, a symbol of their glory and legacy remained steadfast - Ebbets Field. For years, Ebbets Field stood as a reminder of the heroic feats of Duke Snyder, Jackie Robinson, Ralph Branca, Carl Erskine, and Pee-wee Reese. It echoed with the cheers of passionate fans and the crack of a bat against a baseball. It was more than a ballpark; it was a sacred place where dreams and memories were made. However, even this last glimmer of hope is fading away. Soon, Ebbets Field will be dismantled, leaving behind only tears, cherished memories, and a few empty beer cans. To pay tribute to the fans who once gathered at this hallowed ground, we invite you to join us on Be Our Guest for a nostalgic journey through time. Tonight, we are honored to introduce you to the Brooklyn Symphony, a group of passionate fans who, for years, made Ebbets Field come alive with their musical talents and unwavering support. They are your old friends and fellow rooters, and tonight, they will share their stories and memories with us. As you listen to the music and stories of these dedicated fans, you'll come to understand that while Ebbets Field may no longer stand, the spirit of the Dodgers lives on in the hearts of those who cherished it. Join us in celebrating the enduring legacy of the Brooklyn Dodgers and their faithful supporters.

Ted Green is a documentarian whose latest film, ‘The Best We've Got: The Carl Erskine Story', will be airing on PBS SoCal July 4th. Ted's film is an in-depth look at Carl Erskine, a Dodgers pitcher whose son Jimmie was born with Down syndrome 63 years ago, a time in our country's history when segregation plagued humanity. Carl and Betty, when faced with the inevitable institutionalization of their son, which was the option that was customarily given by the medical community to protect the integrity of their family unit, made the choice to take their child home and raise him. A decision for the time that took great courage, taking some of the first steps to change the narrative of Down syndrome. "The Boys of Summer" Most of you have heard the phrase. You don't have to be old to appreciate that remarkable era of baseball...just be a fan of the game no matter what your age. I sat down with one of the last remaining members of that exclusive Brooklyn fraternity, Carl Erskine.   Nicknamed "Oisk", Carl is 93 years young, and we had a terrific time enjoying a conversation about Brooklyn in the fifties and his cherished teammates...iconic players you would know simply by their first names; Jackie, Duke, Pee Wee, Campy, and so many more. Carl said that he thoroughly enjoyed our conversation...for me, I came away with goosebumps.

From his WWII Navy Service to helping Jackie Robinson and the Dodgers break the Color Barrier in Professional Sports, we are very honored to host Mr. Carl Erskine. As a high school pitcher, Carl Erskine was scouted by the Brooklyn Dodgers before joining the Navy in June 1945.Following boot camp, he was stationed at Boston Navy Yard in Massachusetts. “I went to the recreation officer,” Erskine recalled in his autobiography Tales from the Dodger Dugout, “introduced myself and asked if I could get on the baseball team. The officer seemed a little indifferent, then asked me my name and where I had ever played. I told him I had pitched in high school and semipro in Indiana. He looked me over, asked me what I weighed (165) and then said he had enough pitchers. I went away disappointed and found a local semipro team to pitch for on Sundays.” While in Boston, Erskine worked out with the Braves and was asked to sign. But he wanted to play with the Dodgers and after his Navy discharge he was signed by Branch Rickey for $3,500. He began his pro career with Danville in the Three-I League in late-1946 and pitched nine games with 52 strike outs in 50 innings. He made his major league debut with the Dodgers on July 25, 1948. During the pre-game workout one day, a man kept yelling at Erskine from the stands. “Players were not permitted to fraternize on the field with the fans,” he explained in his autobiography, “so I ignored him. Still, the fan persisted in calling out at me. Finally, I walked over to the rail. He stuck out his hand and said, ‘Shake hands with the dumbest so-and-so in the world. I'm the rec officer who wouldn't let you pitch for the US Navy. With guys like me, I'm surprised we won the war.’"Erskine was a 20-game winner for the Dodgers in 1953, threw two no-hitters and was a member of the 1955 World Series team.Following his retirement as a player in 1959, Erskine returned to Indiana. He coached at Anderson College for 12 seasons, including four championships, and rose to the presidency of the First National Bank of Anderson. To commemorate Erskine's accomplishments both as a member of the Dodgers and as a citizen, a 6-foot bronze statue was erected in front of the Carl D. Erskine Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine Center. Also, Erskine donated part of his land to the Anderson Community School System to build a new school, which was named Erskine Elementary.Bob Feller Act of Valor Foundation: http://www.actofvaloraward.org/Podcast hosts: Tyler Buchholz, Nathaniel Cameron, and Colin KirkSpecial thank you to editor Jack MetcalfeSupport the show (https://customcoinholders.com/product/walk-of-heroes/)
