Today's episode is about the Mississippi River batture, and specifically the people who've chosen to live on that sliver of land over the years. To help me explore this culture I've enlisted the help of Macon Fry, author of the book They Called Us River Rats, and himself an inhabitant of the batture.
River Rats was the nickname given to aircrews that flew missions over the Red River Valley that runs southeast from Hanoi to the Gulf of Tonkin. At the time, it was the most heavily defended airspace in the history of aerial combat. One of every 40 persons who flew these missions never returned. The Red River Valley Association was created to commemorate the inter-service teamwork, strong spirit de corps and the sacrifices made by the air crews flying those dangerous missions over North Vietnam. One of their original missions was to generate awareness of the Prisoners of War and air crews Missing in Action and supporting their families. For this episode, we are joined by two River Rats and members of the Red River Valley Association. Rich Martindell flew 232 combat missions over Vietnam as an F-4 Phantom pilot. Ken Shanke flew 239 combat missions as a “back seater” in F-4 Phantoms. Rich says that some of the first Red River Valley tactical conferences were not just about comradery but also about survival. They were trying to figure out ways to fly “smartly” in North Vietnam without suffering so many losses. Initially, only air crews who had flown at least one mission across the Red River were able to join the organization. Since then the bylaws have been changed to open membership up to any designated flight crew members from any service in any conflict. The Association held “practice” reunions until 1973 when all the POW's were returned. The Association has continued their original mission of family support by awarding more than 1,200 scholarships to children of KIA/MIA military personnel and those killed in non-combat related accidents. To date, the value of those scholarships has exceeded $ 3 million. Their affiliate Air Warrior Courage Foundation has also provided over $7 million in direct support to military families. At 69 years old, Martindell returned as a civilian pilot for General Atomics, flying MQ-9 surveillance drone missions in Africa & the Middle East. His experiences are shared in the book “Game of Drones”.
'Non-linear' game tours city landmarks Around these parts, the term BYOB takes on a new meaning: Build Your Own Beacon. At the moment, it's a card game wrapped in a complex, ambiguous concept that could tax the minds of people versed in the immutable rules of poker, bridge or gin rummy. According to creator Chris Sanders, "it's a non-linear board game played with cards. The rules are flexible. No two rounds will ever be alike, and you can play it how you want." Sanders released a 25-card starter deck on Nov. 15 and at least two add-ons are coming, along with a five-panel board featuring 3-D game pieces and dials at each station that deliver prompts. She offers one, with a touch of sarcasm: "The New York Times publishes an article about how cool Beacon is, and everybody gets a game piece because here come the good times." Sanders, an animator, scientific illustrator and textile and visual artist for film and television, designed the cards last year to showcase something new for Beacon Open Studios. She sought advice from her friend's son, Eoin Williams, 12. "He told me that they could be used for a deck-building game, like Magic: The Gathering, where each player builds a deck that gets more complicated as it accommodates more players' cards," she says. In the same way, BYOB can be played with multiple decks, "so the game gets richer and becomes a full idea that never ends." Sanders and Eoin (pronounced Owen), aimed to combine elements of The Game of Life (1960) played on a 3-D board; Sim City (now The Sims), a video game that first focused on building infrastructure; and Yu-Gi-Oh!, perhaps the most popular card game ever created. Now that the card design is complete, the goal is to structure ways to use them and convey the concept to others with clarity, Sanders says. "No one knows how to play [the card game] Pokémon," says Eoin. "We just make it up." For Sanders, Eoin has been instrumental in the game's development: "He's a smart problem-solver who asks, 'What about this?' 'Where does that go?' or 'How do we get to the end?' " The images on the cards look like architectural drawings and the logo printed on the verso shows a transmitter protruding from the peak of Mount Beacon. Other obscure categories group the city's history into nicknames for four neighborhoods - River Rats, Ridge Runners, Mountaineers and Swamp Angels. "I saw pictures of people in a canoe," Sanders says. She figures the swamp - located behind what is now Rite Aid on Main Street - got drained before the Works Progress Administration completed the post office in 1937. The fine print on some cards conveys inside jokes, like the statement accompanying the Bicycle Christmas Tree card: "Check with the transfer station for components." The microscopic font on Pete Seeger's banjo reads, "This machine surrounds hate and forces it to surrender." Sanders's dummy light card includes the comment "No Yarn Ever," with an arrow pointing to the concrete base, a reference to the Yarn Bombing of 2015. Are those googly eyes on the edifice? On another card, a chicken is described as a "breakfast dispensary." A dozen artisanal eggs "equals valid currency, way better than zucchini." Chicken coops "may be simple or ridiculous," as needed. Though Sanders can be sardonic, she adopted the lighthearted approach with purpose. "I want it to be enjoyable on many levels, so that 5-year-olds to 50-year-olds to grannies can make it fun," she explains. "But there's still some editing, honing, perfecting and morphing." The Build Your Own Beacon starter kit is $25 at agoutistudios.com.

Welcome to the seventy-sixth episode of the Lessons from the Cockpit show! I'm your host Mark Hasara. My circle of friends has expanded because of my book Tanker Pilot: Lessons from the Cockpit. One of those great friends has vast experience in almost every Boeing airliner... 727, 737, 757, 767, and the Lockheed L-1011 I found out during this show. My good buddy TC Cappelletti is also one of the most knowledgeable military historians I know because he's a voracious reader of history. And most of the books in his library are signed by the folks in those books. TC shares several lessons learned from his beginnings in the C-9 Nightingale to flying 737-800/900s with Alaska Airlines. This episode of Lessons from the Cockpit is supported by Wall Pilot, custom aviation art for the walls of your home, office, or hanger. These are four, six, and eight foot long graphics printed on vinyl you can peel off and stick to any flat surface. Wall Pilot can draw custom profiles of your favorite aircraft with your name, tail number and weapons load on the aircraft. Go by www.wallpilot.com and chose from 140 Ready-to-Print profiles or fill out the custom sheet for a favorite plane TC began his flying career in the McDonnell Douglas C-9A Nightingale, designed from the ground up for the aeromedical evacuation mission of the US Air Force. This is a print of the C-9A TC flew while stationed at Scott AFB near Bellevue Illinois. The KC-10A Extender is the military version of the McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30. Sixty KC-10s were built for the Air Force to air refuel and move cargo. The 59 aircraft left in the inventory will soon be retired to the Davis Monthan AFB Boneyard. This KC-10 is assigned to the 60th Air Mobility Wing at Travis AFB, California. The Boeing KC-135 has been passing gas since the mid-1950s. This KC-135R Model was my personal jet and flew with the 909th Air Refueling Squadron based at Kadena Air Base in Okinawa Japan. The 909th ARS heritage goes all the way back to the Vietnam War as the Young Tiger Tanker Task Force, the emblem on the nose of the aircraft. During our discussion we spoke of John Connors, Navy SEAL killed during the Panama Invasion December 1989. A statue of John is being funded and placed in the park of his Massachusetts home town of Scituate. The website you can donate to is found at https://www.ameasureofaman.org/ We also mentioned another great organization which grants scholarships to young men and women who need help. The Red River Valley Association, nicknamed The River Rats, was created by Air Force fighter pilots in the early years of the Vietnam War. There is now a River Rat museum in Bowling Green Kentucky memorializing amazing pilots from all the recent wars. You can donate to the scholarship fund by going to the River Rat website. In episode 64, we introduced you to the Mobile Riverine Force, a joint Army-Navy task force that patrolled the brown waters of the Mekong Delta in an effort to disrupt the movement of enemy troops, weapons, and supplies. In this episode, we'll go a little deeper with stories of enemy engagement, environmental hazard, the lingering effects of the River Rat experience, and of course brotherhood and healing.
Commander Task Force 117 was a joint Army-Navy effort to disrupt the movement of communist troops, weapons, and supplies through the Mekong Delta. It was the first time since the Civil War that American soldiers and sailors operated under a joint command. In this episode, veterans of the Mobile Riverine Force — known as “river rats” — share their stories.

After their opening day point against Tottenham, Brentford head up river for a second London Derby in a week, this time against the River Rats from Fulham, who got off to a winning start at Everton last weekend. Brentford place played out three 3-2 matches with our local rivals in the past year, both games ended that way in the Premier League last term, a win-a-piece, then the preseason Summer Series game in Philly last month ended with Marco Silva's men claiming a narrow, if largely underserved victory Stateside. Bragging rights are all up for grabs once again.

If you've ever been on a river trip, you probably didn't bring along your hair curlers or a nightgown. But for women rafters in the 1930s, keeping up gender norms was part of the river experience.
During the Latsch Island heyday, there were all kinds of river rats living in boathouses off the island; artists, hippies, UFO enthusiasts, a judge, ex-clergy. And not everybody agreed on the best way to keep their community afloat.

In this guest episode, I'm interviewing coach John bacon. He's the author of Let Them Lead. Coach bacon took the worst team in hockey and turned them around. He was able to empower his players and make them a winning team. It's a great story, and I recommend you listen to the audio version. Hearing the coach tell the story almost makes it seem like a movie, but it's real life. Our "need to know" connects with our conversation with the coach today. It's all about the question of where does culture fit in with Project Based Learning. Every school has a culture. Like my annual canoeing trip, culture is like the river's current. Your culture is always moving whether you intend it to or not. Send us a textIn this guest episode, I'm interviewing coach John bacon. Adding initiatives like Project Based Learning helps impact your culture positively.Episode Highlights: [03:19] A positive culture helps build momentum. The first of our ‘Summer' readings this year is from Andy Griffee's meticulously researched, fast-paced, crime thriller Canal Pushers.Set on the West Midlands canals from Stratford-upon-Avon up to Birmingham and down to Hanbury (a handy map is included at the front of the book). The detail of the canal systems travelled is beautifully captured as is life aboard a narrowboat for would-be owner Jack Johnson. I initially started the book with some slight apprehension, being drawn by the canal setting and the rave reviews. However, I was quickly hooked. If crime thrillers are your thing, you are going to love this. If canals and narrowboating are more your thing, I think you will love this too. The publisher's blurb provides the following synopsis:“Book 1 in the Johnson & Wilde crime mystery series, featuring ex journalist Jack Johnson, the enigmatic Nina Wilde, and a narrowboat with a top speed of 4 miles per hour… Jack Johnson is newly divorced, recently made redundant and in search of a fresh start. But when a young boy he meets on the canals turns up drowned, trouble seems determined to follow him. With the encouragement of Jack's unlikely companion, Nina, who's come aboard his narrowboat, Jumping Jack Flash, to help him navigate the waterways of the Midlands, Jack is soon tangled up in a police investigation that doesn't quite add up. Is there a serial killer stalking the towpaths? Jack's got more pressing problems too: can a canal boat outrun an organised crime syndicate and a media manhunt?” More information and bibliographic detailsGriffee, Andy (2019) Canal Pushers. Band It About - Proudly Supporting Live Music "Podcast Series"
Karen Pater was born in Sydney, spent her teenage/early-mid adult life in Perth, and in recent years moved to South Australia settling in the Fleurieu Peninsular. Despite taking up playing the harmonica initially whilst living in Perth, initially inspired to play this instrument after seeing Matt Taylor play, and Matt encouraging her to continue playing, Karen eventually became frustrated by the lack of ways to learn how to play. The pre-internet days meant relying on learning to play by ear whilst listening to records, and eventually, life got busy with work and other commitments, so apart from jamming with friends or attending an open mic, Karen didn't have much of an opportunity to advance her natural talent. All of this changed in recent years when she moved to South Australia, Karen was asked by her friend Heather Frahn if she would like to play with her band Heather Frahn & The Moonlight Tide at the Deep South - Roots, Blues & Folk Festival in 2013, giving Karen the opportunity to fulfill her dream of playing at The Gov on the main stage. Since marrying and retiring from nursing, Karen has had the time and the opportunity to rediscover her love of the harmonica. The first band that she joined in SA was called 'Billy Goat Boogie, and when a couple of the band members decided to move on and form their own band The River Rats, they asked Karen if she would be interested in joining them. The River Rats started in 2019 with the aim of putting together a blues repertoire to then gig at local bars and festivals. The 'Rats, as they've become known, have built a very strong following on the Fleurieu Peninsular and surrounding areas with their brand of cool blues classics and original songs. The band includes Karen Pater (harmonica and percussion), Garry Searle (lead vocals, drums, and guitars), originally Michael Porter on guitar, now replaced by Caitlyn Rault, and Paul Kraack (vocals, bass, and guitars). Through the challenges of COVID-19, Paul and Garry built a song-writing collaboration and began recording a number of original songs - and the band created the EP titled 'Hold On'. Two singles 'Hot And Cold', and 'Wildflower' were released around Christmas 2021 on all streaming services. In January '22, their blues song ‘Wildflower' achieved national recognition when it hit number 3 on the Australian National Radio Airplay Project regional charts. The 'Rats continue to gig around the Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia and perform their originals and R&B classics. Music "Band It About" theme song, written and recorded for the BAND IT ABOUT - Podcast Series by Catherine Lambert and Michael Bryant. Outro; 'Wildflower' The River Rats 2021 debut EP 'Hold On', written by Garry Searle and Paul Kraack. + Bonus audio after song. Join Curtis Mack behind the mic in WRNJ's studio as he speaks with radio legend and #NJ native, John Hennessy. John has broadcasted in the #AHL and #NHL for the #AlbanyRiverRats and #TheNJDevils and he has the championship rings to prove it. Hennessy started his career in 1993 with professional sports broadcasting and prior to that he worked at stations like #WBZ and #WKOX after graduating from Providence College and later William Paterson University. It was John's dream to become a broadcaster as far back as he remembers. “My father had season tickets to the #Rangers back in the ‘70's.” says, John. His career was inspired by names like Marve Albert, Martty Glickman, and Bob Wolf. Later working with names such as; Mike Emerick, Chico Resch, Randy Velischek who also is a #Jersey guy according to Hennessy. “I got my start in local radio.” says John. Curtis Mack explains to John his start in local radio as well. John has a championship ring from 1995 with the River Rats and 2003 with the Devils. John even found himself hosting a television program with #FOX pregaming NHL games along with voicing other memorable broadcast opportunities. John mentions his favorite place to travel is #Newfoundland because he “loves the people there” and of course a good #hockey game. “Travel was a big part of the job.” says John. After 20 years of #radio broadcasting, John mentions that he's semi-retired, but If the right opportunity came along at a local station, he'd take it. John Hennessy can be best reached for any voice over or broadcast related work through his #Facebook page. Visit CurtisMack.com for more!
Dan and former AHL reporter Bob Dittmeier reminisce about the Capital District Islanders, the New York Islanders' upstate-based farm team from the early ‘90s and players like Graeme Townshend, Greg Parks, Jamie McLennan and more. Bob takes us through the Capital District Islanders' unique founding (that eerily mirrored its parent club's), and talks about some of the players he covered that would go on to be short time NHLers. From Townshend's intelligence and scary injury that inadvertently caused an entire other franchise to fold, to younger versions of Dean Chynoweth and Kevin Cheveldayoff being destined for coaching and management roles, we go around the locker room with the reporter that was there for the franchise's entire three year history. Along the way, they cover the birth of the River Rats, being locked out of an arena by burly security guards and a six-hour drive home with dedicated Dead Head and Capital District coach Butch Goring trying to get Bob to rent his house for the summer. On his latest studio venture, the Asheville, NC native packs a punch with six new tracks that boast some of the most electrifying arrangements you’ll hear all year. On the heels of his 2018 LP release “Family Dynamo,” Scotchie is set to unveil his most mature and sonically diverse collection entitled “Everyone Everywhere” on Friday, June 26. With heavy themes like corporate greed and inequality prominently featured in the condemnatory track “Funny Money,” more playful tunes like the sweet retro-rock inspired “Natural Romantic” offer listeners a much needed respite from thinking about these turbulent times. An anthem in its own rite, leading single “Stepping Stone” sets the stage for a short yet pungent magical mystery ride of psychedelia, funk, and jam-adjacent rock that is nothing short of enrapturing. The standout “Fear Mongers,” starts with a hardy sample of Charlie Chaplin’s famed “The Great Dictator” speech (which required official approval from the late filmmaker’s rights-holding office in Paris), declaring that “the misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed” and segues perfectly with Scotchie’s “don’t wait / don’t hesitate / ‘cause the poor man can’t give what the rich man always takes,” artfully encapsulating the current climate. With such timely social commentary embedded into every track, the new EP could easily be mistaken for a response to the ongoing pandemic, though the album was actually recorded months prior. Still, Scotchie welcomes the serendipity, and encourages his listeners to adopt their own takes on the lyrics, especially when they can be utilized to reclaim hope. Scotchie concludes the album with a universal offering in the title track “Everyone Everywhere,” imploring "Even if you feel lonely / when this world is unkind / call on me, I'm sure you'll find / even when you feel you got nothing / everyone everywhere's got something.

Since then the band has transformed from an acoustic street duo into the current setup of a full electric power trio. The current lineup of Andrew Scotchie (Vocals/Guitar), Eliza Hill (Drums) and Keith Harry (Vocals/Bass) came to be in early 2016 and since then have been revered far wide for their engaging, interactive High-Energy, Funk-ti-fied Rock n’ Roll show. Couple the abilities and in the moment spirit of a jam-band with a punk rock fierceness and energy, and you’ll get a show that will have familiar songs but with a twist that offers a listener something only in that moment. 2018 in particular brought the band many new opportunities traveling to previously untapped regions to connect to new fans, especially after the release of our latest and most eclectic album, Family Dynamo. Last year the band toured up and down the East Coast from Florida to New York, electrifying and magnetizing fans and new folks alike with the live show and new record. Some notable venues along that trip include The Grey Eagle, 1904 Music Hall, Visulite Theatre, Brookfield Place, The Pour House, Barter Theatre, Floyd Fest, and the Purple Fiddle. 2019 has already taken the band to new heights and places. The band wrapped up a month long “Winter Out West Tour” in February with a sold out show in Steamboat Springs (Old Town Pub), and many other highly successful and impactful shows in Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Utah and Idaho. Building on the success of that winter tour the band took to the van again for the follow up Summer Out West Tour. The summer tour took them to many of the same places as the winter tour, but with new stops in Helena, MT and Jonesboro, AK. Consistent studio recordings, year round touring, earnest songwriting & sharing show bills with such greats as Sonny Landreth, Blind Boys of Alabama, Drivin N Cryin, Ghost Light, Eric Gales, Big Daddy Love and Bettye Lavette has made Andrew Scotchie & the River Rats one of the industry’s fastest growing Rock n Roll bands, and WNC’s best Rock band 5 years running. Rolling Stone’s Garret Woodward gave mention to the band in his coverage of Warren Haynes’ Christmas Jam stating that the band is “starting to make a name for themselves on the national scene”. Current Lineup Andrew Scotchie: Guitars/Lead Vocals Keith Harry: Bass/Backup Vocals Eliza Hill: Drums

Week Eight continues as Dan and Janice really settle into life next the adorable town of Lyons and to the rush of the river alongside Evangeline. Today they never left town and yet the day was as full as could be. Less full was the tube that the 14-year-old attempted to navigate down the river. A rubber innertube that has seen better days, the lopsided tube--bulbous on one side, thin on the other, created a bigger challenge than the rapids in the river. The 14-year-old managed to hang on, which is more than can be said for the kid that Janice had to help fish out of the river earlier in the day. Some riverside drama, just for you. Grab a tube and join us as Week Eight floats on! Follow along on Instagram @tincanevangeline Follow Dan on Twitter @dansinker Follow Janice on Twitter @janicedillard

The longest summer in history continues, thanks to our ill-conceived project of watching all the horrifying sequels to that classic summer camp comedy, Meatballs. Tonight we're suffering through Meatballs III: Summer Job, which is even worse than Meatballs II, and is not even set at a summer camp. But it does offer an early starring role for Patrick Dempsey, replacing Chris Makepeace from the original movie as Rudy (and rendering the character creepy and unlikable). Meanwhile Sally Kellerman is way too good for this movie, but there she is, in a role so bizarre we'd rather not even discuss it. (But we do.) A few other Meatballs III actors are recognizable as well, from The Muppet Movie, WarGames, the 90s X-Men cartoon, and being married to Gene Simmons. And one quick scene brings to mind a certain Martian we're sort of obsessed with around here. Throw in the River Rats (a gang of creeps on jet skis), an angry bull attacking everyone, and a soundtrack featuring Loverboy, and it's hard to imagine how it all went wrong. But yikes, it sure did. Join us and we'll get through it together. And if you feel like you need something to ease the pain, we're celebrating National Refreshments Day too! We recommend iced coffee. Always.

Andy Jones should be locked away in prison, but God saved him. Through a life of molestation, drugs, sex, theft and domestic abuse God was with him, but he refused to listen. Andy has served as a ministry leader at Celebrate Recovery Ministry at Seacoast Grace Church, a ministry that helps broken people find their way back to God through a 12 step Christ based program. This is his amazing testimony. “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her” - John 8:7 Biggest Weakness - Profanity Biggest Strength - Compassion and empathy Dark Time - Born to an alcoholic mother and father Andy struggled as a child. At 7 years old he was put into a mental institution. He was a wild child that his parents couldn’t handle. If you misbehaved, you were locked into the white room where he saw his mom leave on a visit. Andy stayed there for 16 weeks and then bounced back and forth between his mom and her crazy boyfriend and her dad and his abusive girlfriend. Because he wet the bed, she would beat him regularly. In school he was in special ed classes and fought a lot. Andy was an outcast, but he found adults that he could spend time with. In junior high, Andy ran around with a crew called the River Rats. During this time is when he began stealing and handling guns. In the 8th grade he ran from the cops and ending up in jail for 30 days. Early on he was molested by a babysitter and other older men and women, but it seemed normal. He explored sex for many years in situations he shouldn’t have. In his marriage Andy has learned that the most intimate thing he can do with his wife is pray. During high school, Andy tried to change, but he brought himself wherever he went. He was a drug addict, sex addict and became very violent. He began stealing again, took acid and one night shot up a Toyota Dealership and gas station. 2 credits short of graduation he got 7 class A felonies. They sent him to the penitentiary at 17. Prison was a gladiator school. It’s a University for Felons where he could learn to be a better criminal. His grandmother was a woman of faith that saved his life. She was a prayer warrior for Andy. He always knew God had a plan for him, but he didn’t want to listen. Andy got his girlfriend pregnant and got married. He tried to get sober, began meetings, but it didn’t work. He left his wife and kids and became addicted to smoking cocaine. He couldn’t pay child support and was thrown in jail. His ex-wife bailed him out and they remarried and had twins. Andy still couldn’t stay clean. He confesses that he was a very abusive husband. Andy moved back to California worked at a bar and found his next victim whom he stayed with for 20 years. When he met a stranger who broke down he became addicted to methamphetamines. He was soon asked to deal meth and it became a big deal. Although Andy was making a lot of money he never sent child support. He was again arrested for not paying child support. It was God saving him from a much worse prison sentence. He met a bank robber in prison who he took out on his first night back on the streets. They found him dead in Andy’s car from a heroin overdose. At one point he was very high and snuck into a house to shoot up some guys who stole his stuff. He ended up shooting a man in the chest. He went on the run, but they tracked him down. Nobody died, Andy got on his knees and prayed. He got a deal for 5 years and knows that God had a plan. In prison Andy contracted Hep C from a heroin needle. When his mom died, he couldn’t grieve while he was inside. Once he got out his 15 year old son wanted to have a relationship with him, but he didn’t know how to be a dad. One night a homeless crackhead came to him and said you need to straighten up. This was Andy’s angel. Andy found out that his children had been raped by their stepdad since they were 7, but God had lifted his rage. Andy has held his job now for 15 years. He met his wife Cassie and she took him to Celebrate Recovery. He’s been clean and sober since June 6th, 2003. Feed yourself with scripture. Celebrate Recovery Ministry at Seacoast Grace Church is a ministry that helps broken people find their way back to God through a 12 step Christ based program and Andy became a minister there.
