Listener, what happens when your home is destroyed in a natural disaster or accident and you lose the very people you need around you? You have no home to go to, and are cast adrift without the people you love who you rely on to make difficult times easier to bear. You feel abandoned and alone. And listener, what happens if that ‘accident’ that destroyed your home and killed your loved ones wasn’t actually determined to be an accident at all, but something far more sinister, caused by the last person on earth you’d suspect? This is what we contemplate in today’s story. Injuries can be huge setbacks for competitive athletes. Everyone has a certain window of time in which they can play their best. Time out of competition is time lost that can’t be recovered. For some, they can end a career. The question dovetails well with episode 46’s discussion of workload management, but obviously that’s not the whole story. Dr. Ramsey Nijem gives us insight from his doctoral thesis, as well as his work with professional athletes. There are some great takeaways for coaches, athletes…and even powerlifters. Here are some of our thoughts: What lifestyle factors outside of training might lead to injury? Does drinking or drug use make injuries more likely? How are outcomes and training effects different? Does it help get stronger period, or does it matter how strength is incorporated? How much is controllable? We kick off the conversation by wondering if 25 should just be the legal age for everything? Dr. Nijem earned his Doctorate of Science in Human and Sport Performance as well as Health Promotion and Wellness in 2018. He has published research in top scientific journals in strength and conditioning and is currently investigating injury risk in NBA athletes. He earned his B.S. from UC Santa Barbara and M.S. from Cal State *Fullerton’s Center for Sport Performance (where he studied with Dr. Andy Galpin). After several years as head Performance and Strength Coach for the Sacramento Kings NBA franchise, he recently became the Men’s Basketball Director of Sport Performance for the University of Kansas (KU Jayhawks), one of the top Division 1 college basketball programs. The medium of podcasting has grown enormously in the past few years. How do you get started? And is it really right for you? Being veterans of the podcasting game, Jim and Mike field questions from listeners such as: How much does it cost to get started? What are the tech requirements? Are podcasting and YouTube really all that different? How do you keep a consistent release schedule? How do you differentiate yourself from the crowd? How do you know when it’s time to move on? Jim Williams and Dan Maduri talk about the mass shooting attacks that took place in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio. There is pressure on the White House, the House and the Senate to do something about the rash of gun violence in this country. The duo talk about what if anything that Congress, or the White House will do anything to curb the growing gun violence in the United States. There are many plans that the American people support like the ban on assault rifles, enhanced background checks, closing the loopholes at gun shows and Internet sales. These common sense gun laws have support by both those who aren't gun owners and those who all agree that the time has come to move forward on gun laws. But are state legislators both on a statewide and in Washington ready to make a bold move? But year in and year out there seems no way that politicians on both sides of the political community statewide and in Washington who are willing to give up the gun lobby money. Spend $8 at the coffee shop, $5 dollars for a little snack later on... maybe $20 eating dinner at a restaurant with your co-workers later tonight. Rinse, wash, and repeat a few days a week and you'll start to wonder where all that extra cash you're supposed to have in your wallet actually went. And maybe you're not leaving your money "faucet" on full pressure all the time, but like any homeowner can tell you, even a constant drip can run up a bill at the end of the month. Helping us face our own money leaks today, from the Mad Money Monster blog, we welcome Lisa Harrison. Rounding out our contributors today is Paula Pant (from Afford Anything) and Len Penzo (from LenPenzo.com). But that's not all... we'll also have time for Doug's trivia, and also will tackle a voicemail from a listener. Do you have what it takes to be a wealthy heiress (or heir)? Our friend Linda P. Jones says that you already have the ingredients...now you just need to dive in and show your prowess. She'll take you through the steps to claim your wealth, and we'll talk about investing based on cycles and momentum on today's show. Plus, in our headlines segment, a new study shows that financial pros want the best of all worlds...active management with passive-like fees. Is that a pipe dream or is it really on the horizon? We'll mull it over. Plus, banks are protecting themselves with some additional language you should put on your checks if using mobile deposit. What are the words? Will it also protect you? We'll share everything on today's show. Of course, that's not all. We'll also throw out the Haven Life line, answer a letter from the mail bag, and more!
