As we taped this episode of Honestly, it was 3 a.m. in Israel. Sirens wailed across the country as Iranian missiles rained down on Israeli towns. At the same time, Israel was striking military and nuclear sites inside Iran, and oil fields were aflame. Meanwhile in Washington, reports were emerging of a heated debate inside the White House over whether the U.S. should get involved in the war. It's hard to overstate the magnitude of this story—or how uncertain the outcome is for Israel. There's no one better to help us make sense of this war than Michael Doran—senior fellow and director of the Hudson Institute's Center for Peace and Security in the Middle East. This has been his story not just for the past few days—for the last decade, no one has written more, and more brilliantly, about Iran's nuclear aspirations and Washington's posture toward Iran than Mike. And he just wrote for The Free Press “The Ultimate Deception: How Trump and Bibi Outfoxed Iran.” We recorded this interview Saturday evening at 6 p.m. as a Free Press subscriber livestream. From its storied Wild West towns to its rich Native American heritage, Oklahoma's haunted lore reflects a blend of cultures and histories that have left an indelible mark on the land. We'll journey through haunted hotels that once housed notorious outlaws, eerie museums filled with artifacts of untold stories, and lonely backroads where the shadows of the past still linger. Get ready to uncover the supernatural secrets hidden within the plains, hills, and prairies of the Sooner State, as we explore five of Oklahoma's most spine-chilling locations. Featured Locations: The Skirvin Hotel 1 Park Ave, Oklahoma City, OK 73102 Beyond the infamous tale of Effie, guests often report the sensation of someone tugging on their bedcovers or catching a fleeting shadow in their peripheral vision, especially in the early hours of the morning. Some athletes who have stayed here swear they've had nightmares so vivid they considered leaving in the middle of the night. The Skirvin Hotel continues to welcome guests, combining modern luxury with a chilling glimpse into Oklahoma's haunted history. The Stone Lion Inn 1016 W Warner Ave, Guthrie, OK 73044 Visitors to the Stone Lion Inn often feel an unexpected chill in the former mortuary room, where it is believed that the residual energy of the funeral home days still lingers. Guests have heard unexplained knocks on their doors at night, only to find no one there. Augusta's presence is particularly strong in the attic, where guests have reported the unmistakable sensation of a child's small hand clasping their own. Fort Reno 7107 W Cheyenne St, El Reno, OK 73036 The old barracks echo with the sounds of phantom bugle calls and the rhythmic march of ghostly soldiers. Some visitors have felt an unexplainable heaviness around the site of the former POW camp, where German soldiers were held during World War II. Paranormal investigators have recorded inexplicable EMF spikes around the fort's historic chapel, where shadowy figures have been spotted in the windows at dusk. Gilcrease Museum 1400 N Gilcrease Museum Rd, Tulsa, OK 74127 While closed for renovations, those who previously visited the Gilcrease Museum reported feeling an intense energy surrounding the sacred artifacts. Museum staff often experienced unexplainable power surges and the faint smell of burning sage when near certain exhibits. Many locals believe that the spirits of the Gilcrease Museum will remain, ensuring the artifacts are respected, even when the new building opens its doors. The Overholser Mansion 405 NW 15th St, Oklahoma City, OK 73103 Besides the figure of Mrs. Overholser, visitors frequently report hearing soft piano music coming from the music room, as if a spectral pianist is still performing. The third-floor bedroom, once used by the Overholser children, is particularly active, with toys moving on their own and the faint sound of giggles echoing through the hallways. Cain's Ballroom 423 N Main St, Tulsa, OK 74103 The venue's ghostly activity often peaks during live shows, when both performers and audience members have reported cold gusts passing through the crowd and the smell of old cigar smoke lingering in the air. The ballroom's historic bar area is known for bottles moving on their own, as if unseen patrons from the past are still lingering for one last drink. Belvidere Mansion 121 N Chickasaw Ave, Claremore, OK 74017 On quiet nights, some visitors have heard a lullaby emanating from the empty nursery, where one of the Bayless children once slept. The mansion's gardens are also known for sudden temperature drops, especially near the old fountain, where Mrs. Bayless was often seen enjoying her evenings. Constantine Theater 110 W Main St, Pawhuska, OK 74056 Witnesses often describe the actress's ghost as appearing during rehearsals, offering gentle applause to performers who catch her favor. The eerie apparition of a cowboy has also been spotted in the audience, leaning back in his chair as though watching an old-fashioned Western. Cherokee Strip Museum 901 14th St, Alva, OK 73717 Some have reported hearing the soft sound of hymns being sung in the old chapel area, and staff members have found objects mysteriously rearranged as though unseen hands are moving them. Paranormal researchers have detected unexplained cold spots near the hospital beds and occasionally catch the scent of antiseptic, hinting at the building's medical past. Oklahoma Territorial Museum 406 E Oklahoma Ave, Guthrie, OK 73044 Beyond the librarian's ghost, the building is said to be haunted by a former student who died in a tragic accident on the property. Visitors have reported hearing soft crying near the classroom exhibits, and some even claim to have seen an apparition of a young boy near the library shelves. I was pretty sure the answer was yes.I asked ChatGPT:What key assets of overseas countries are owned by the United States or US Companies? The answer was long. There are a lot, covering Real Estate, Energy and Natural Resources, Financial Services, Technology and Telecoms, Infrastructure, Media, Entertainment, Agriculture, and Pharmaceuticals and healthcare.I asked it to dive deeper into Energy and Natural Resources:Can you expand on energy and natural resources and list the top 5 assets that are US-owned by strategic to the country in question?ChatGPTExpanding on the energy and natural resources sector, U.S. companies' overseas investments often focus on areas with significant strategic value, either due to their size, the nature of the resources, or their critical role in the host country's economy. Identifying the "top 5" assets can be challenging due to the dynamic nature of the industry and the sensitivity around such strategic assets. However, I can provide examples that highlight the kind of assets that would be considered strategically significant:* Oil Fields in the Middle East: U.S. companies have long had interests in the Middle East's oil fields, which are among the world's largest and most productive. An example would be Chevron's stake in the Partitioned Zone between Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. These assets are crucial due to their vast reserves and the global oil market's dependence on Middle Eastern oil.* Natural Gas Projects in Australia: The U.S. energy giant Chevron operates two of Australia's largest natural gas projects, Gorgon and Wheatstone. Australia is a key player in the global LNG market, and these projects represent significant U.S. interests in the region, providing energy to Asia-Pacific markets.* Mining Operations in Africa: U.S. companies have significant mining operations in Africa. For instance, Freeport-McMoRan's involvement in the Democratic Republic of the Congo's cobalt and copper mining industry is crucial, given cobalt's importance in battery production for electric vehicles.* Shale Gas in Argentina: U.S. companies like Chevron and ExxonMobil are involved in Argentina's Vaca Muerta shale formation, one of the largest reserves of shale gas and oil outside North America. This is strategic for Argentina, contributing to its energy security and potential as an energy exporter.* Renewable Energy Investments in Europe: U.S. companies are increasingly investing in renewable energy assets abroad, such as Iberdrola, a Spanish company in which the U.S. investment bank JPMorgan Chase holds a significant stake. This investment is strategic as Europe transitions towards sustainable energy, and Iberdrola is a major player in wind and solar energy. These examples illustrate the diverse nature of U.S. energy and natural resource investments abroad, emphasizing assets that are strategically important due to their size, the resources they provide, or their role in the host country's energy sector. What is the point of this exercise? The goal is to illustrate that global interconnectedness is the norm, not the exception. International relations have had reciprocity—allowing foreign companies to operate in the U.S. fosters a reciprocal environment where American companies can also expand and thrive overseas. The moment the domicile of ownership appears as an issue, the biggest loser will be the largest owner of foreign assets—hint: not China.TikTok does not represent a threat to the US. And Bytedance's ownership is not more concerning than Shell's ownership of oil platforms overseas should be. Indeed, Bytedance, and therefore TikTok, is not even “Chinese” anymore: This is from the FT:The company is often described by western politicians as a “Chinese” entity. However, as I have noted before, some 60 per cent of the group is actually owned by “international” investors, overwhelmingly American. An estimated $8bn has been invested by private capital companies, including Sequoia Capital, Susquehanna, General Atlantic and Coatue Management. Mainstream investment funds such as Fidelity, T Rowe Price and BlackRock are exposed, too.Returning to the economic nationalism of the inter-war years and fear-driven politics will not serve humanity at all. Demonizing Chinese ownership will equally have negative results, especially if China reciprocates with US ownership, such as Tesla or Apple in China.Who benefits from this demonization? - jingoistic politicians seeking cheap votes. I cannot think of any example of jingoism serving good human outcomes. So, it seems the “predecessor” agrees, but I do not favor a TikTok ban or forced divestiture. I am with the EFF (see this week's essays) in seeing this ban as wholly negative. This is a public episode. Serial entrepreneur Billy Batt has a string of successful business ventures (and titles) to his name, including Founder and Owner of Chrome Leaders, a lead generation and marketing agency. But the way he shared, his life would have continued in a very different direction. After running away from home at 13, Billy learned his way around the streets at a young age, living on leftover doughnuts from a bakery and sleeping outside in the Canadian winter. It wasn't long before he'd gotten into drugs, started to steal and, ultimately, joined a gang. Although he tried to leave the street and its substances behind, with stints working in oil fields, it was a hard life to shake. And it was taking its toll. “All my friends were dying and going to jail. These guys were all really good friends of mine that I consider brothers. Before I knew it, I was sitting there alone. Everybody else was dead or in jail, or smoking crack or doing heroin,” he recalls. After multiple near-death occasions himself — ”I don't know how I made it out” — Billy woke up to the reality of his life after coming to in the hospital, covered in blood and with no memory of how he'd gotten there. But although he may have vowed then to make a new life for himself, it didn't happen overnight. On this episode of Life After Addiction And Indictment, Steve and Billy talk about the importance of who you surround yourself with, what it actually takes to turn a new page and finding success in the world of marketing. What You'll Learn: How Billy went from teen runaway to owning a business that's set to bring in $50,000 a day What he's gotten out of being part of Grant Cardone's 10x Ambassador Program Why being successful in business will still involve some slips along the way (and how to bounce back from those) And much more! A self-proclaimed story teller, Michelle McCloskey, shares her path to success on the podcast today. Michelle is the President of the America's Man Group and the President of Man Group FRM. Her role is to be the senior representative for the executive committee in North America. The London based investment management firm oversees over 114 billion dollars, over 5 different investment engines. Michelle's story starts in Texas as the 5th generation child of the oil business. Due to her roots, she went to school for engineering and when she graduated at 22, she went to work in the oil fields in Alaska. Her colleagues there advised her that she talked too much to be an engineer, so she began trading natural gas in the physical world when the market became deregulated. The natural gas market propelled Michelle, as it did with many other women, into opportunity galore, and at 24 years old she began transferring into futures trading when it became available. Although it presented challenges, Michelle was confident to succeed in the new opportunity. Over the course of time, she developed so many close relationships with clients that the company decided Michelle's time and energy would be better facing outward than inward. After over 20 years of sitting behind a screen trading, Michelle now spends her days interacting with other to represent the firm. She uses her skills and knowledge to communicate with clients and colleagues to find true collaboration to help them grow. Many of the jobs that Michelle has held, she was the only woman in the room. Michelle was able to find ways to adapt to make sure she stayed in the game. She advises listeners to try not to be intimidated and not to let yourself get told no. Find a way to get yourself to the table and show that you can carry your weight and you will prove yourself and achieve. Michelle used her network of peers to learn from and relied on them for support through her challenges. Whenever a new opportunity presents itself, Michelle is not afraid to take the risk. As a calculated risk taker, when a door opens, Michelle has the confidence in herself to try something new and figure it out along the way. An inspirational leader, Michelle has the opportunity to craft and shape the team around her. She wants to ensure that the environment her staff works in was not the same cut throat environment she had worked in so many time before. She tries to truly cultivate the essence of collaboration, and uses her communication skills to reach those who may have lost the art of communication sitting behind a screen. Michelle's leadership style is one of caring about all of those around her, and she is excited to see where her story will go next. For more about Michelle's work with the Man Group and the Man Group FRM, visit their website: www.man.com and to learn more about Michelle's story, connect with her on LinkedIn.
