“Comedy and scares are so similar. I've found that in a lot of my scripts, it's almost like you're taking the peaks and valleys of humor, and the peaks and valleys of scares, and flipping them on each other. So, you have the scare that you come down from for a moment of brevity and humor, or just character work, and then you do another scare. You've relaxed them and then scare them again. The effect is that you're making the audience have a good time,” says Seth Sherwood, author of The Scary Movie Writer's Guide. In this episode, we speak with Seth Sherwood, writer of horror movies like Leatherface and Hell Fest. He was also nominated for an Emmy for writing the TV show Light as a Feather. I chat with him about the long process of making Hell Fest with producer Gale Ann Hurd, the difference between internal and external horror, and his definition of grounded horror that's so popular these days. He also gives his advice on what he thinks is the single best thing an emerging horror writer can do to help their career. “Right now, the industry is in a retraction, there's an implosion and streaming is dying. When people ask me now how to break in, I say I don't know, but I think you'll never go wrong in actually trying to make stuff like short films. I know it's a whole other path and it's a difficult thing to do but people will always watch stuff before they read stuff if they're not writers. And those people are the gatekeepers. I always wanted to make my own films, but my writing career took off and I'm actually in a spot where I'm going backwards, where I have done so many writing assignments in the last few years but things aren't getting made – so, I'm going to go make a microbudget horror film on my own with my friends. The thing that I wanted to do when I was 20 years old. Because at least it's a thing that can be seen. And that has more weight than a script right now,” he says. To hear more about horror writing from Seth's perspective, listen to the podcast.
Episode 469"Sugar"Cinematographer: Richard Rutkowski. An active cinematographer whose work encompasses indie features, documentary, commercials, and major streaming productions, Richard is based in New York and also works extensively overseas. His photography on the first seasons of FX's Cold War spy drama The Americans drew widespread critical acclaim. Likewise his camerawork on the wartime drama Manhattan, set in Los Alamos during the top secret creation of the atom bomb, earned glowing mentions and two ASC Award Nominations for Best Cinematography. Recent projects include Apple's Sugar, starring Colin Farrell and James Cromwell, and the WW II epic Masters of the Air, produced by Gary Goetzman, Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. Additional credits include the pilot and three seasons of Amazon's international action hit Jack Ryan, USA Network's surrealist drama Falling Water, produced by Gale Ann Hurd, and Hulu's Castle Rock for producers Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason. Most recently Richard filmed the pilot block of The Hunting Wives, a new series produced by Lionsgate for the Starz Network.Growing up in Provincetown, Massachusetts; Fort Smith, Arkansas; and Water Mill, New York - disparate locations that traced the career of his late father, landscape painter Casimir Rutkowski - Richard developed an appreciation of context, diversity, and the examined details of individual environments. His early ambition was to become an architect. While attending Harvard College, Richard began making 16mm short films mixing live action, stop animation, and electronic sound composition. One such project was Sunshine Superman, created with the artist Christopher Knowles and screened in festivals and in art gallery exhibition ever since. While working as first assistant to extraordinary cinematographers such as Ed Lachman ASC; Eric Edwards; David Stockton ASC; and the late Freddie Francis BSC, Rutkowski continued lensing short films and indie features for emerging directors. After earning a Grand Jury Prize at Slamdance for Kevin Asher Green's minimalist mini-DV film Homework, Rutkowski shot director Neil Burger's debut feature, Interview with the Assassin, nominated for Independent Spirit Awards in Best First Feature and Best Cinematography categories.Working with a legendary mentor, theater maestro Robert Wilson, over 20 years led to Richard filming the artist's initial HD Video Portraits. Meticulously staged, slow-moving images of Mikhail Baryshnikov, Winona Ryder, Brad Pitt, Steve Buscemi, and Robert Downey Jr. sparked a growing collection that has been exhibited internationally ever since. Over a three year period Rutkowski produced, shot and directed The Space in Back of You in homage to Japanese dancer Suzushi Hanayagi, a mesmerizing, eclectic talent whose approach to stage movement deeply influenced Wilson and other avant-guard luminaries. This film premiered at New York's Lincoln Center and has screened on Arte Channel, the Baryshnikov Center for Dance, and at the Pompidou Center in Paris. Filming groups of workers and individual laborers in painterly long takes, Richard collaborated with artist Sharon Lockhart on Double Tide, Lunchbreak and Exit, projects since screened at MoMA in New York, LA's Hammer Museum and other major gallery and museum installations over the last twelve years.https://linktr.ee/mondaymorningcritic

In episode 15 - we are getting our sour milk on so we can talk nonsense about Alien Nation from 1988. This episode was recorded before James Caan passed away which is why we don't mention it during the podcast. Although Caan was openly not a fan of this movie, we think it stands tall as an example of his ability to bring his A-game every time he was on screen over his incredible sixty-year career. Directed By Graham Baker. Produced by Gale Ann-Hurd. Written By Rockne S. O'Bannon. Starring James Caan as Matt Sykes, Mandy Patinkin as Sam Francisco aka George and Terrence Stamp as Harcourt.

Scott talks with Gale Anne Hurd, the legendary Hollywood producer behind cultural touchstones like the Walking Dead franchise on television as well as the Terminator and Alien movies. Hurd told us about her impending launch of the third Walking Dead series in 2020, and about major developments in the Terminator franchise because a relatively new copyright law will give control back to her and James Cameron, its co-creators for the first time in decades. But her most poignant words had to do with the fight for gender equity in entertainment and empowering individuals, which is a central theme of her life’s work. Dumb Nerds: Comedians Talking About Smart Topics They're Too Dumb For
Today’s special guest is Charlie Mihelich (Catharsis: Dramatic Improv & Purgatory) and he comes on to talk about The Terminator movies! Cassi had to sit down to watch “The Terminator 1” and “Terminator 2: Judgement Day” before podcasting with Charlie because she had never seen them before. Turns out, she loves them! Seeing Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator and not Howard Langston from “Jingle All the Way” really changed her opinion about him. He’s a total badass as The Terminator! Charlie gets down to business and talks about his love for The Terminators movies and why the newest one, “Terminator Genisys”, is the worst. They talk about the career of rags-to-$1.79 billion-net-worth-riches James Cameron and how “Avatar” and “Titanic” are the top two highest grossing movies of all time. James Cameron directed both films along with “Terminators 1 & 2”, “Aliens”, “The Abyss”, “True Lies”, etc. His married life is not so great but Cassi takes time up top to talk about why all the women he’s been married to are total badasses especially film producer Gale Ann Hurd and film director, Kathryn Bigelow. James Cameron was also briefly married to Linda Hamilton, the actress who orginiated Sarah O’Conner. The talk of the Terminator movies also gets Charlie and Cassi talking about Arnold Schwarzenegger running for California state governor while shooting “T3: Rise of the Machines”, alternative casting like OJ Simpson was originally considered for the role of the Terminator and Arnold was going to play Kyle Reese. They also talk about the other actors in the film like Linda Hamilton, Edward Fulong, Michael Biehn and the late, great Bill Paxton. Other fun topics include Jamie Lee Curtis, Tom Arnold, Star Wars, Harrison Ford crashing airplanes, Indiana Jones, Rocky and other aging heroes, Shia LaBeouf, Miles Teller and Red Letter Media. Enjoy! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Jimmy joined the roundtables for the hit AMC show THE WALKING DEAD while at Comic Con. You'll hear from Michael Cudlitz, Danai Gurui, Sonequa Martin-Green, Lennie James, Andrew Lincoln, Melissa McBride, Greg Nicotero, Norman Reedus, Chandler Riggs, Steven Yuen, Scott Gimple (Showrunner), Gale Ann Hurd (Producer), David Alpert (Producer). The CNI mic is pointed directly at the talent so you'll hear them the best (and that's more important!) so apologies if the media questions are a bit muddled. I had a little fun with some questioning and you'll hear showrunner Gimple jokingly call me out on it! Reedus and Jimmy had a laugh afterwards when Jimmy reminded Reedus of the promise he made to me to throw in a Boondock Saints easter egg. But instead, they thought a Chewbacca roar might be better. Some great hints on the upcoming season! Leave your iTunes comments! 5 stars and nothing but love! Thanks for listening!

The classic Romero film Day of the Dead is the topic dejour of Episode 150 of Mail Order Zombie (as is Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs)! Miss Bren finally sat down to watch the third film in the ...Dead franchise (it's the fourth ...Dead film she's watched, fifth if you count Shaun..., but that's not really a Romero film so nevermind!), and she joins Brother D to discuss the movie. Brother D resurrects the review he produced of the film's soundtrack album (from way back in Episode 53), and Need-a-Nickname Scott - when he's not dishing the news in the Zombie Beat - takes a look at the original screenplay for the film. A few friends of the show and Mail Order Zombie Family Members also call in their thoughts on the film. And because Brother D both called Miss Bren's bluff and had his own bluff called, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs also gets the Mail Order Zombie treatment (and the Family Movie Night podcast helped out with that!). After the Feedback Discussion (was that . . . Honeydew . . . ?), we'll flash black to this past summer's Famous Monsters of Filmland Convention for the Day of the Dead panel (featuring Mark Tierno, Terry Alexander, Gary Klar, Joe Pilato, Michael Gornick; moderated by Billy Graham) courtesy of Need-a-Nickname Scott and his wife Tracey.
