In this episode host Claire Bown talks with Francine Boon, a self-described 'sociologist turned mystery maker' and co-director of Sherlocked, an award-winning experience design studio based in Amsterdam, about transforming how visitors engage with museums through immersive storytelling and game design.Francine shares two major museum projects in this episode: her Rijksmuseum escape room that attracted 10,000 participants in nine weeks and received a 9.4/10 rating, and her recent Palace Mysteries project at the Amsterdam Royal Palace. Both demonstrate Francine's ability to reach difficult age demographics (12-18 and 10-12 year olds) through carefully designed puzzles and storytelling that connect visitors with museum collections.Listen to discover practical solutions for designing games in museum spaces, from protecting valuable objects to managing visitor flow. Learn how giving players specific roles encourages appropriate behaviour, explore techniques for building compelling narratives around objects, and find out how to ensure visitors engage meaningfully with collections rather than just playing games. The Art Engager is written and presented by Claire Bown. This week, we're joined again by episode guest Victor and Francine from Sherlocked in the Netherlands. They tell us about the escape room they built for Hotel Zoku during the pandemic, and we also explore outdoor escape room style adventures, what to call them, and some logistics to consider when designing them. We also talk about escape room tour logistics, especially when it comes to a potential Netherlands Tour. Finally, Victor and Francine talk about an at home escape room design kit that may be an upcoming Sherlocked product. This is the end of Season 8, but we will continue to produce bonus shows for Patreon backers, even in the off season. And be sure to keep an ear out for our new show, PG's Playhouse, launching very soon. In this clip, we discuss Victor and Francine's Recon Talk, about working with a variety of contractors while building their top rated escape room, The Alchemist. And the importance of working only with nice people.   If you enjoy these previews, I hope you'll consider joining our Patreon. For only $5 a month, you'll get access to our Bonus Aftershow, where we continually release new episodes, even in our REPOD off-season.

“A vision into the future of what I want escape rooms to be.” After 1,200 escape rooms, it certainly takes something remarkable to capture the #1 spot on David Spira's list of favorite games. As he tells us in this episode, his favorite game shifts from  moment to moment, but in this particular moment, that game is The Alchemist, created by Francine Boon & Victor van Doorn of Sherlocked Escape Rooms in Amsterdam. David had this to say about The Alchemist: “It's a wonder factory. It is filled with impossible moments and machines, and it made me weep with joy during the finale each time I watched it. I think I saw the finale three times when I came to visit. I just love this game and it feels like a vision into the future of what I want escape rooms to be.” It's not the first time that Sherlocked has created a game that has shaped the future of the escape room industry. Victor started playing escape rooms in 2012 when the industry was still in its infancy, and a few years later, he started Sherlocked, along with a few other partners. Sherlocked's games The Architect and The Vault are noteworthy for the level of immersion they created at the time. They used actors and “cold starts" to truly create the feeling that players were in a movie.  We can see the influence of Sherlocked throughout much of the escape room scene in The Netherlands today. Many of the games there make use of actors, with immersive onboarding. Additionally, many are set in historical buildings, just liked Sherlocked is. Victor and Francine are creative alchemists in their own right, combining their skillsets to create wondrous, magical games. This is the season finale for Season 8 of Reality Escape Pod. Season 9 will launch in April. Meanwhile, we are excited to release some off-season content. Plus, keep an ear out for PG's Playhouse, a new show launching this winter. I talk with David and Lisa Spira from the site Escape Room Artist and podcast Reality Escape Pod about how escape rooms are becoming emotionally resonant, sophisticated theatrical works. What happens when big tech swallows the little guys? Unveil the phenomenon of "Sherlocking" as we dissect how Apple has a knack for integrating third-party innovations into their own systems, potentially rendering those original products obsolete. We trace this back to the 1990s with the Sherlock vs. Watson saga and peel back the layers to reveal its ongoing impact today. Nick Espinosa joins us for  cybersecurity flaws in Microsoft's recall application to Chinese tech companies skirting US sanctions, we cover it all. This episode also takes you on a journey through the history of encryption standards, leading up to today's quantum encryption possibilities. With iOS 18 on the horizon, Apple's new call transcription service is set to make waves, and not necessarily in a good way. This episode examines how such moves by tech giants can cripple smaller developers who find their innovations swallowed whole by companies with far greater resources. Alcuni non sono d'accordo con questa affermazione, affermando che Sherlock 3 era l'evoluzione naturale di Sherlock 2 e che Watson era ovviamente destinato ad avere qualche relazione con Sherlock con il suo stesso nome. The latest In Touch With iOS with Dave and Warren they are joined by guest Guy Serle. Stage Manager is a great new feature for multitasking on the iPad in iPadOS 16 it won't work on any iPad below M1 processor so 2 year old iPads will not get full experience and many are unhappy. The EU wants to force USB-C on all mobile devices and Apple may need to retire the lightning connector which is over 10 years old. tvOS actually has some new features which Apple rarely offers. Sherlocked apps are a thing and Reincubate makers of Camo Studio using iPhone as webcam add some great new features with overlays and lower thirds. Plus much more.  The show notes are at InTouchwithiOS.com

Apple Seeds Third Betas of iOS 15.6 and iPadOS 15.6 to Developers  We are on week 2 of Beta iOS 16 for developers. Also HomePod Software 16 will be available to public beta users for the first time there are some new features in iOS 16 that I was pleasantly surprised to find. When you type a temperature in Celsius it will automatically bring up a conversion to fahrenheit and kelvin. This was in the messages app it should apply to other apps. Same applies to time zones type in a time with a time zone in messages it will give you the local time for the recipient.  We talk about more WWDC 22 announcements and items that were not reviewed during the event and other topics this week.  Stage Manager controversy won't go away: A lot of people with slightly older, non-M1 iPad are NOT happy that Stage Manager is limited to M1 iPads. Apple claims that older models (non M1 iPads) won't be able to offer the “Full Experience” for a variety of reasons like faster internal storage and more RAM. Some fire back,“ then make it less capable for older iPads” which is not something Apple is likely to do. With this we are starting to see cracks in the Intel/M-Series Processor divide with some features now pretty much M-series only, leaving still quite capable Macs in the rear view mirror. Live Captions in FaceTime, Sidecar with Reference mode only for M-series Macs and M1 iPads, and Emoji Support in Dictation Mode Stage Manager controversy won't go away, and Apple can still fix it iPadOS 16 code confirms Apple has internal mode to enable Stage Manager on older iPads The European Union will be mandating that all devices must have  USB-C as their connector. Our friend Andrew Orr did a piece on Lightning versus USB-C: Pros and cons for the iPhone Sherlocked apps will they recover? Dave reached out to Reincubate the makers of Camo Studio and the current iOS app was crashing on iOS 16. Happy to report that Camo now with version 1.6.6 fixes some bugs but best of all it doesn't crash on iOS 16 anymore. But then they have a plan to stay relevant as do other apps. https://9to5mac.com/2022/06/16/sherlocked-apps/ Apple as always never mentioned any updates to tvOS but this go around with tvOS 16 there were some notable updates. What's New in tvOS 16 for Apple TV: Features and Enhancements CarPlay did have great updates we of course will not see full screen access in cars for a while. Most software developers and engineers know what it means to be sherlocked — the worst of fates for an app. The term was first coined in the early 2000s when Apple implemented its Sherlock search tool in Mac OS 8. Sherlock shipped only a few months after Karelia Software made a similar third-party application for the Mac called Watson. Watson was sherlocked. This is a look at the rise and fall of AOL due to a transition to broadband, the emergence of SMS text messaging and a merger gone wrong. With its creation of AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), the company broke through the barriers of communication by reducing the cost, increasing the speed, and expanding the scope of this new, instant communication method to over 35 million users at its peak.

In today’s episode, I speak with Pim Schachtschabel. Pim is the former Co-Founder and Design Director of the world-renowned Sherlocked, an experience design company in Amsterdam. He uses his formal training in architecture and design thinking as a backbone to enhance our human experience. During the pandemic, he went on a journey to research, experience and discover how we can train our muscle of curiosity.  Pim is on a mission to bring more magic into the design world and currently wears the hat of Experience Architect.  We dive into the world of design filled with curiosity, how being curious about curiosity can fuel more creativity and innovation, the principles and practices you can integrate into your daily life to stay curious, and practical ways on how you can grow your curiosity as a designer that can lead to a path of learning filled with meaning and inspiration.
