In the first of a four-part series about social housing, Rob sits down to speak with Neil Goodrich. Neil is a housing professional who has studied the subject of social housing for a decade. He works for a medium to large housing association in the Midlands, Southwest and East and is the former chair of the CIA´s futures board. He and Rob discuss how the way regulations are changing is impacting the social housing sector.   KEY TAKEAWAYS England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales all have separate legislative and regulatory housing bodies. In England, housing associations were effectively self-governing, when it comes to consumer standards. Around 2012, the capital budget for social housing was cut by 60%, yet they were told to build more houses. That meant the only option was to cut costs, which inevitably reduced standards. There used to be one housing officer per 100/200 units. Now, it is one per 1,000/2,000, making it impossible to do the job properly. There are promising changes in regulations coming that will tighten things up again. Fines will no longer be capped. Inspections for housing associations are back. There will be a named individual responsible for health and safety.   BEST MOMENTS ‘I live, sleep, breathe social housing.' ‘There are only some very specific instances whereby the regulator can actually intervene in a proactive manner.' ‘The drivers for social housing providers are cash and politics based, you do not operate in a vacuum.' ‘There has been a significant recognition that change needs to happen.' British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Saturday that Russia's invasion of Ukraine was a “turning point for the world,” arguing that a victory for Russian President Vladimir Putin's forces would herald “a new age of intimidation.”But the British leader was accused by opponents of making a crass comparison by likening Ukraine's fight against invasion to the U.K.'s exit from the European Union.Speaking to a Conservative Party conference in Blackpool, northwest England, Johnson claimed Putin was “terrified” that the example of a free Ukraine would spark a pro-democracy revolution in Russia.“That is why he is trying so brutally to snuff out the flame of freedom in Ukraine and that's why it is so vital that he fails,” Johnson said.“A victorious Putin will not stop in Ukraine. And the end of freedom in Ukraine will mean the extinction of any hope of freedom in Georgia and then Moldova, it will mean the beginning of a new age of intimidation across Eastern Europe from the Baltic to the Black Sea,” Johnson said.Johnson praised Ukrainians' defense of their country, and added that it was also “the instinct” of people in the U.K. “to choose freedom.” As an example, he said British voters opted in a 2016 referendum to leave the EU “because they wanted to be free to do things differently and for this country to be able to run itself.”Johnson helped lead the campaign for the U.K. to leave the bloc it joined in 1973. Britain's departure, eventually completed in 2020, remains highly divisive.Ed Davey, leader of the opposition Liberal Democrats, called Johnson “a national embarrassment.”“To compare a referendum to women and children fleeing Putin's bombs is an insult to every Ukrainian,” he said.Gavin Barwell, who served as chief of staff to former Conservative Prime Minister Theresa May, said “voting in a free and fair referendum isn't in any way comparable with risking your life to defend your country against invasion.”Barwell also pointed out that Ukraine has asked to join the EU.- by Jill Lawless, Associated Press

This is the first in a new type of episode for Jimmy's Jobs of the Future - instead of exploring an entrepreneur or a business,  we're looking at specific jobs and asking leading people in that field just exactly what it entails. There is an increasing trend in entrepreneurship and business of the title "Chief of Staff". It's even been mentioned a few times on this show, with Salima Vellani from KBox Global starting off her career as one and Alex Stephany from Beam currently hiring for one.Today's guest is Gavin Barwell who has been the highest-profile chief of staff in the country - first introduced by Tony Blair in 1996, the Prime Minister's Chief of Staff has become a big feature of British politics and Gavin was one of the longest-serving in recent memory under the premiership of Theresa May. We hear about just how he landed that job, why you need a swiss army knife skillset and what business could learn from the role. Since leaving Number 10, Gavin has written a book called Chief of Staff, which we discuss in the episode. It's available in many places but we'd like to point you towards bookshop.org to support local bookshops near you. As Michael Gove is appointed Britain's new housing secretary, Jack Blanchard investigates the crisis gripping the sector and asks why Britain seems forever unable or unwilling to build enough homes. He speaks to three former ministers about their efforts to solve the crisis — including Gove's friend and ex-flatmate Nick Boles, who admits his radical planning reforms of 2013 were a failure. Tony Blair's housing minister Nick Raynsford insists New Labour were right to focus on improving social housing rather than building millions of new properties, but says a mass construction program is now needed. And Theresa May's housing minister — and latterly, chief of staff — Gavin Barwell admits her government became too bogged down in Brexit to push through radical reforms. Meanwhile Dr Gemma Burgess of Cambridge University offers her expert opinion on why homes are so expensive, and the Manchester Evening News' Jennifer Williams offers a view from the North. The marginal constituency of Croydon Central was a key battleground in the 2015 General Election. The incumbent Conservative MP Gavin Barwell was fighting a serious challenge from Labour, for whom the seat was an essential win if they were to become the largest party. But Gavin Barwell held it by 165 votes. The rest is electoral history – one that he hopes to write in a forthcoming book about the campaign trail in Croydon. He joined Birkbeck Politics to discuss the issue not just of winning, but governing in difficult times. Gavin Barwell was elected as the MP for Croydon Central in 2010. Before becoming an MP, he worked for the Conservative Party, serving as its Chief Operating Officer between between October 2003 and May 2006, and had his own consultancy business. In 2011 he became the Parliamentary Private Secretary to Greg Clark, which was followed by his appointment in 2012 as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Michael Gove, the then Secretary of State for Education. In 2013 he became the Assistant Government Whip and in 2014 was promoted to his current role as Lord Commissioner of Her Majesty’s Treasury.
