According to the CDC SUID Case Registry Project, every year approximately 150 sleep-related infant deaths occur in Michigan.  That’s about three deceased infants a week. Or two school busses full of kids, or seven kindergarten classrooms GONE every year due to causes that are largely preventable.  The causes typically include a person or an object in the baby’s sleep space that leads to suffocation.  Common objects associated with these events include pillows, blankets and stuffed toys.  Sadly, preventable sleep-related causes are the number one contributor of infant deaths in Michigan, as it is in many areas around the United States. In season 2 episode 12 we introduced our audience to the Direct on Scene Education, or DOSE, Program, which is an innovative attempt at eliminating sleep-related infant deaths due to suffocation, strangulation or positional asphyxia on a national scale by using First Responders to proactively identify and remove hazards while delivering education on scene. First Responders are trained to identify and remove hazards from an infant's sleep space while on scene during emergency and non-emergency 911 calls. In this episode we welcome Dr. Samantha Mishra DO, MPH back to the show.  Sam is the EMS for Children Coordinator for the State of Michigan.  Today, my buddy Sam has brought along representatives from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Infant Safe Sleep Program.  Their mission is to prevent sleep-related infant deaths.  Our guests include Colleen Nelson, LMSW, the Michigan Infant safe sleep program coordinator, as well as Patti Kelly, LMSW, MPH, the sleep program consultant.  Part of their job is to know the incidence, occurrences and circumstances of infant deaths in the entire State of Michigan.  They are most familiar with our State-wide data, so it makes sense to bring them into the fold to help guide us towards understanding the problem in our back yard.  Understanding the problem and appreciating what we can do to solve it is vitally important. The State of Michigan EMS office and the Infant Safe Sleep Program have been working very hard to bring the DOSE Program to Michigan. In this episode, our guests will help us appreciate what is at stake for newborns sleeping in unsafe situations.  Then, they’ll describe what the State of Michigan Infant Safe Sleep Program is doing to team up with EMS to reduce the number of preventable sleep-related infant deaths every year. For more information check out DOSEprogram.com, as well as Michigan.gov/SafeSleep to learn more. Through my lens as a practitioner in attempting to philosophise this telling therapeutic phenomenon event which subtly influenced my cognition while framing and composing this event.I was inspired to write the text When Ash Falls ©2021 . The stark reality is When Ash Falls invariably it is as a result of Sulfur dioxide will be spewed from volcanoes reacting in the atmosphere to form sulfate aerosols (aerosols are tiny particles suspended in the air). Both ash and aerosols can scatter the sun's rays, giving a sunset its apparent colour. Finally at the end of the day When Ash Falls ©2021 VOL.1 is Podcast 110 which was captured in 9 chapters and framed in ISBN 978-976-96650-5-7When Ash Falls ©2021 VOL.1 Podcast ISBN 978-976-96650-5-7WORKS CITED"Evacuation Order Given As La Soufriere Could Erupt In Hours Or Days". News784. 8 April 2021."Little Activity Recorded at St. Vincent Volcano (1979)". Daily Press. 16 April 1979. p. 5. Executive Order on Expanding Educational Opportunity Through School Choice (paraphrased) Issued on: December 28, 2020 By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, and in order to ensure the education, health, safety, and well-being of America's children, our most essential resource upon which the future of our great Nation depends, it is hereby ordered as follows:Section 1.  Purpose.  As part of their efforts to address the public health challenges and uncertainties posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, State and local officials shut down in-person learning for the vast majority of our more than 56 million elementary and secondary school students beginning in late February and early March of this year.  Since then, however, our Nation has identified effective measures to facilitate the safe resumption of in-person learning, and the Federal Government has provided more than $13 billion to States and school districts to implement those measures. The prolonged deprivation of in-person learning opportunities has produced undeniably dire consequences for the children of this country.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has stated that school attendance is negatively correlated with a child's risk of depression and various types of abuse...School closures are especially difficult for families with children with special needs.  Schools provide not only academic supports for students with special needs, but they also provide much-needed in-person therapies and services, including physical and occupational therapies...Low-income and minority children are also disproportionately affected by school closures.  In low-income zip codes, students' math progress decreased by nearly 50 percent while school buildings were closed in the spring, and the math progress of students in middle-income zip codes fell by almost a third during the same period...While some families, especially those with financial means, have been able to mitigate school disruptions through in person options such as homeschooling, private schools, charter schools, and innovative models like micro schools and “learning pods,” for many families, their children's residentially assigned public school remains their only financially available option.  Students whose families pay tuition for their education are also facing significant hardships due to the economic disruptions caused by the pandemic.  I am committed to ensuring that all children of our great Nation have access to the educational resources they need to obtain a high-quality education and to improving students' safety and well-being, including by empowering families with emergency learning scholarships.Sec. 2.  Providing Emergency Learning Scholarships for Students.  The Secretary of Health and Human Services shall take steps, consistent with law, to allow funds available through the Community Services Block Grant program to be used by grantees and eligible entities to provide emergency learning scholarships to disadvantaged families for use by any child without access to in-person learning.  These scholarships may be used for:(i)    tuition and fees for a private or parochial school;(ii)   homeschool, micro school, or learning-pod costs;(iii)  special education and related services, including therapies; or(iv)   tutoring or remedial education.DONALD J.
