Welcome to Art is Awesome, the show where we talk with an artist or art worker with a connection to the San Francisco Bay Area. In this week's episode, Emily interviews painter and muralist Oscar Lopez. Oscar shares his journey from growing up in Mexico City, where graffiti first introduced him to art, to becoming an established artist in California. He talks about his murals honoring farm workers, his shift from computer science to art, and the challenges he faced as a minority artist. Oscar also discusses the importance of believing in oneself and the struggle with self-identity as an artist. His works are currently displayed at the Institute of Contemporary Art in San Jose and Fort Mason in San Francisco.About Artist Oscar Lopez in His Own Words:I am visual artist born and raised in Mexico City, where I first came into contact of the art world in the Graffiti urban art scene. After immigrating to the USA to San Francisco, Bay area (Silicon Valley), focusing on trying to understand our complex society through a Mexican immigrant's lens in the USA. As a Mexican native who has being affected by the influence and the interruption of my culture by international immigrants and trends of imperialistic organizations. I use a critical eye to engage with the globalization, imperialism, and capitalism that affect every corner of the two nations that share my soul. My concerns are reflected in a dialogue of the Stockholm syndrome symptoms created by the oppression and discrimination of imperialistic orders. In both sides of the border this is having a bigger impact in minorities, people of color and the workers that hold entire nations that also suffer of social and cultural amnesia. In order to survive in these societies built on the foundations of white supremacy and colonialism our ancestors have been forced for generations to either hide, directly confront, or sympathize with our oppressors, resulting in a mass forgetting of cultural and social practices. As our cultural identity and practices have been suppressed we have become hostages in our own homeland. Our collective social and culture amnesia continues to affect people of color on both sides of the border. The globalization of multicultural problems such as classism, racism, and inequality affect the social and psychological side of humanity. Since we so easily forget where we come from as individuals, as an artist I choose to remember, honor, and reclaim those roots and rights. Multicultural problems affect how we see ourselves in comparison to others, in a disengagement with our history, and in a loss of our customs. Even the color of our skin is a source of contention. These problems are intangible, invisible for many. As an artist, I want to create tangible images that reflect our psychological symptoms and demand us to confront our submission to the powers that hold us.Visit Oscar's Website: ArtByOscarLopez.comFollow on Instagram: @OscarLopezArtFor more on his mural at Fort Mason, CLICK HERE. Hi everybody, Happy New Year! I'm stoked to post this chat with my first guest of 2025: Mediterranean artist extraordinaire PAVLO! Born in Toronto to Greek parents, Pavlo's amazing journey to touring concert halls around the globe is most impressive. Over his 20-year career, he's released 17 albums and 4 PBS TV specials, including his latest which was filmed in Santorini! Two of his albums went GOLD, and he had a Top 10 Billboard hit with “FANTASIA.” In 2002, Pavlo won a lawsuit against R&B mega stars R-Kelly and Jay-Z, who sampled his music for their hit song “Fiesta.” Pavlo has performed for King Charles and worked/toured with artists such as Jose Feliciano, Olivia Newton John and The Tenors. He also recorded/performed a trio album called “Trifecta” with legendary guitarist OSCAR LOPEZ and Hall of Famer RIK EMMETT (Triumph). Their subsequent national tour was sold out, and the album earned Pavlo a Juno nomination!Playing what he calls “Mediterranean music”- a blend of Greek, flamenco, Latin and Balkan flavours, Pavlo chats about his early childhood, how he went GOLD on his debut album and sold out Toronto's Massey Hall. We also talk about his continuous growth in popularity by orchestrating the release of 4 PBS specials, allowing him to tour constantly all over North America. Pavlo has headlined over 3000 concerts so far and, being a born entertainer, will keep performing and performing. This was a fun chat I enjoyed very much! Welcome to 2025 all. Our guest is Oscar Lopez. 2 time Juno winner. 10 albums were released. Nothing usual about the words above, except that for several years Oscar had disappeared! From entertainment, media and life itself. This interview is his way of explaining how he went from winning two Juno awards and walking onto stages with loving audiences to living in his car on the streets of Calgary. Through tears, Oscar talks about the dark years he's been through. Mental and alcohol battles. Second guessing himself. With the help of his family members and an overflowing GoFundMe effort, he's finally found the peace and strength to find a place to call home and return to the stage. Jan 17/18 at La Bodeguita Stereo in Calgary

Others have sent in their testimonials on how our Blessed Virgin Mary has interceded for their petitions. And I'll have to get is their permission before sharing any of the testimonials. If the Holy Spirit is leading you to support our Mission and our Ministry, will you please help us pay it forward by donating on our website at www.54daysofroses.com ?We understand that these are difficult times. Another way to help our Ministry is by giving us a review or rating by hitting on the stars on your podcast app, and hopefully, you give us the 5-star rating. I completed Rosetta Stone Spanish (Latin America) in 2014, but geography, along with other circumstances, mean that my exposure to Spanish is limited, and I'm far from fluent. Nevertheless, it was a great course, I learned a lot, it wouldn't take long to get up to speed, and at the very least it's not indecipherable. That brings me to Episode 71 where Dr. Alejandra Merriman and Oscar Lopez Huerta, LAT, ATC will talk about concussion and how the essential communication between the injured person and the Athletic Trainer. Communication is of the utmost importance; whether it's Spanish to English or English to Spanish, each party must fully understand the other. Check out them our on Facebook, Latinx Athletic Trainers, Twitter @LatinxATs and Instagram @latinxats !

This episode, Oscar Lopez-Huerta and Arthur Maxwell Powell II converse about confidence & tranquility, taking a knee & putting up his fist, protesting in Las Vegas in front of SWAT and LVPD, finding meaning in our darkest moments, mental health, and passing on our education to others. A recent University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) graduate, Oscar finished a degree in Athletic Training where he interned with a variety of sports teams: from low income high schools to Division I football. He has been involved in several organizations that are based around volunteerism and activism. His time at UNLV sparked a drive to help people through different means: one on ones like working with an athlete to organizing events for students to joining a cause that is bigger than him. Reach out to Oscar Lopez-Huerta on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/its_athletictraining_student/ or by sending a message to his email at lopezhue@unlv.nevada.edu This is my third interview, recorded on Tuesday, June 9th, 2020. Main questions: How do you define “protest”? Why is protesting important? Why did YOU decide to protest? How did you prepare for protesting? What happened on the way to, during, and after your protesting experience? Has mainstream media and major news corporations reported on protests accurately? How so? What can we do to end systemic racism in our society? What keeps you hopeful that our descendants will live in a better world? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/whyweprotest/message
For this week, we were blessed to have our guest, Oscar Lopez join us. Oscar Lopez is the head of a media outlet entitled, “Gridiron Beauties.” Gridiron Beauties is an outlet that spotlights the best women's tackle football as well as the best women's tackle football athletes around the world. In the past, we talked with the owner of the Seattle Spartans of the WFA, Nicole Pelham. During that interview (episode 25), we took a more specific look at women's tackle football by specifically looking at the Seattle Spartans, and using them as a “case study” of sorts. For this episode, we broaden the look of women's tackle football. Oscar Lopez of Gridiron Beauties is perfect for this. Gridiron beauties takes a look at all the opportunities in this sport around the world. So, after we received great feedback from our interview with Nicole Pelham, we knew that we needed to get another guest to talk about the same topic, but we wanted to broaden it up. So, instead of looking at one team in one league, in our discussion with Mr. Lopez, we talk about the different leagues, the many different teams spanning both the country and the globe, and even compare the indoor and outdoor opportunities. We hope you enjoy this more broadened look at women's tackle football around the world. A special thank you is in order to our guest this week Oscar Lopez. Also, thank you to our sponsors and partners, Stanley Customs (Instagram @stanley_customs) as well as Creating Young Minds and the Lewisville Yellowjackets of TBL. Hi friends! Join me today on the live show as I welcome Dr. Robert Oscar Lopez.Dismissed from his tenured position at Cal State Northridge and most recently from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary for his unwavering stand exposing LGBTQ goals and abuse, Dr. Lopez states:“Academia has no incentive to arrest social breakdown but many incentives to spur it…On the college campus the true work of political dictatorship and propaganda is carried out. If a party controls television stations, they can control the news and implant suggested messages in sitcoms, promos, and selective advertising. That’s a lot of power but it pales in comparison to academic hegemony. If a party controls higher education, millions of 18-year-olds move into dormitories and marinate in their ideology 24 hours a day, for four years or more, a reeducation camp enviable to any totalitarian regime. The dormitory coincides with the age at which young men and women are contending with soaring hormones, the most gorgeous they will ever be, and lucky to have lots of extra time on their hands. It is the perfect time and place to lure them into an emotionally manipulative worldview that promises sexual open mindedness, love, unfettered marijuana, and carefree self-righteousness, while closing their eyes to most of the harsh realities and consequences that led human cultures to develop their strict notions of chastity, self-discipline, and industriousness.”Join me at 6pm ESTDr. Mike SpauldingEmail Dr. Mike at: pastormike@cclohio.orgSupport Dr. MIke’s ministry at: https://www.drmikelive.com

Introduction This is the Northern 90 Podcast with Pat Sweet, Episode 7. Welcome to the Northern 90 Canadian Premier League Podcast, covering the beautiful game in the great white north. For more Canadian Premier League content, head over to Northern90.ca. That’s Northern Nine Zero dot ca. Welcome Hello, Canada, and welcome to the Northern 90 Canadian Premier League Podcast! And actually, before I move on, I should say hello to the rest of the world, too. In the three weeks since I launched the podcast, I've had visitors from: Canada United States United Kingdom Netherlands European Union Ireland Serbia Panama Honduras Belgium So, I should be saying "Hello, world!" and welcome to our great land. It's great to have you. In today’s episode, I'm going to do a deep dive into the recently-announced media rights partnership that was announced between Canadian Soccer Business and Mediapro - what's good, what's bad, and what questions remain unanswered. But first, let's tackle this week's CPL headlines. News In this week's headlines: Portuguese-Canadian footballer Stephen Eustaquio commits to the Canadian Men's National Team. This is huge for Canadian soccer. You look at the roster, and guys like Cyle Larin, Ballou Tabla, Jonathan David, Alphonso Davies, and now Eustaquio, are all solid and have enormous upsides. By the time Canada co-hosts World Cup in 2026, the men's squad is going to be very, very good. The Young Gaffers had a great show this week, with a really cool interview with Pacific FC's Marcel de Jong. Go check that out. They made the argument that de Jong's signing could really open doors for MLS players considering joining CPL, which I think is a good call on their part. There's finally a CPL schedule! Check it out here. If you want even more CPL content, including the most important headlines delivered straight to your inbox, then sign up for the Northern 90 Supporters' group. When you join, you get a weekly newsletter with the top headlines, podcast notifications, access to private supporter's group Facebook group, and much much more. Also, it's free. Check it out at northern90.ca/join. Next up, a deep dive into the CSB's media partnership with Mediapro. Deep Dive into the CSB's Media Rights Deal with Mediapro In last week's episode, I explained that the creatively named Canadian Soccer Business had announced a deal that would see it's media rights for the next decade be sold to Mediapro for an undisclosed fee. If you didn't catch the episode, you can check it out at northern90.ca/episode6,but to recap: The Deal in a Nutshell Mediapro is a global media company based in Spain, known for the "commercialization of competitions" like La Liga and UEFA Champions League, among others. In this 10-year deal, Mediapro becomes the “Official Media Partner" to the CSB They are acquiring the global and domestic rights to: Canadian men's and women's national team home matches Voyageur's Cup CPL games League 1 Ontario games Mediapro will be in charge of the production of all matches Plans include an OTT soccer streaming channel that will be available through desktop, mobile, and smart TV platforms. Content includes unique soccer shoulder programming including magazine shows, documentaries, and other Canadian soccer programming. Quotes from Oscar Lopez, the CEO of Mediapro Canada: "For us, the match is only half the story we want to tell. The other half is the story of the players, the cities, the training and processes, everything around the match and about the teams. That’s how we built La Liga, which is on seven days per week." “We know clearly that the agencies that only deal with buying and selling rights are coming to an end. We need to add more value to these rights.” Mediapro will continue to work with CSB to contemplate all distribution opportunities, partnerships, and platforms that ensure the future success of CSB’s media assets. What I think of CSB Deal with Mediapro On the importance of cash Think of the league as a start-up. Cash is the most important thing in the world right now. This deal gives us that, and cash into the future to plan on. There have been no official reports on the cash value of the deal, but the guys over at the Young Gaffers podcast had heard it was a $20M/ year deal. If that's true, then there will a lot of people at the league's front office sleeping well for the first time in months. On the long-term deal A 10-year deal is interesting. On one hand, it represents a risk for CSB that they've left money on the table. It's possible they could have gone with a shorter deal and gone back to the market in a couple of years in the hopes of getting more money once the league has matured a bit. On the other hand, having a longer-term deal puts Mediapro in a spot where they're all in. If they hope to reap the benefits of their investment in these rights, they have to produce excellent content to sell to consumers directly, to other distribution channels, or to sell the rights to someone else. The ten-year deal means everyone's in this together - it creates a win-win situation. When the league produces great soccer, Mediapro wins. When Mediapro produces great content, the league wins. In both cases, the fans win. I suspect there's also an eye being put toward world cup in 2026 as well - there will be a natural groundswell of soccer support in this country at that time. Canadian players will be on the world stage, at home, and the CanPL will get a ton of organic marketing through that. Following the tournament, Mediapro will find that there's much more demand for their content, both direct to customers and through the major networks. On Mediapro The other encouraging thing about the deal is that that's a major vote of confidence from Mediapro - an organization with significant experience in and exposure to leagues all over the world. This deal allows the league and CSB to focus on football. They're not a media company. Mediapro is. This will lead to better overall product quality on the pitch and on your screen. Mediapro will end up hiring Canadians and staffing offices here. That's good. On the products being promised I'm excited that the content will be delivered over the top. Thrilled about the scope of what will be delivered - having national team games and Canadian Championship games included is awesome. Coverage of League 1 Ontario intrigues me. It makes me wonder what the CPL's plans are for that league. I can only imagine that there's work being done already to sort out how to integrate it formally into the larger Canadian Soccer Pyramid and with the CPL. There has been consternation online about not having the league shared directly with casual fans on major networks. I think it's important to remember we're early adopters. The league isn't looking for mass adoption right away. OTT is just fine. Even better, it'll give Mediapro better feedback through which to improve the programming quickly. Once the product is refined on and off the pitch, it can go to a wider audience. Overall score My gut reaction is that this gets an A. The long-term nature of the deal is a win. The cash is a win. The partner is a win. Not worried about the lack of big cable deal. Distribution has to satisfy the early adopters first, then move on once that market has been served, and the needs are very different. What do you think? If you've listened to the show, you know I love to hear from you guys. I'd love to know what you think of this deal. You can: Leave a comment at northern90.ca/episode7 Write to me at pat at northern90.ca Fire me a note on Twitter @northernninety Next up, the mailbag. Mailbag Some great messages and ideas this week to share with you. Barry from Scotland wrote to tell me he liked the show and to provide some good feedback, so I really appreciate that Barry. Paul wrote to ask for some clarification on the 3 U-21 players and the 1000 minutes minimum rule. Reddit user TheUrbanEast made some great suggestions about what I could do in future episodes by doing interviews and having guest hosts on the show. I love the idea, and I'm already working on that. I've got some irons in the fire that include other soccer content creators, analysts and league office folks, so stay tuned for that. As I've mentioned before, I love getting your mail. Keep it coming! The best thing about doing this podcast is meeting other fans and talking about the game, so thank you for that. Outroduction That's all we've got for the show today.
