Il n'y a pas de volcans actifs en France… métropolitaine. Mais il y a 4 volcans actifs dans les DOM-TOMS : la Soufrière en Guadeloupe et la Montagne Pelée en Martinique. Le Piton de la Fournaise est situé à la Réunion, dans l'océan Indien, et un 4e volcan actif a été découvert en 2018 au large de Mayotte, à 3000 m de profondeur. Les célèbres volcans d'Auvergne de la chaîne des Puys sont des jeunots endormis. La dernière éruption en Auvergne date d'il y a 6 700 ans. Elle nous a laissé le lac Pavin dans le Puy-de-Dôme. À l'aube des années 80, il arrive à Paris pour étudier la musique et joue beaucoup de musique latine, notamment dans le groupe La Manigua avant d'être, avec Nguyen Lê, le cofondateur du groupe de jazz-rock fusion Ultramarine. Il devient vite très demandé et enchaîne les collaborations avec des artistes comme Lavelle, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Nicole Croisille, mais aussi Carter Jefferson ou encore Chico Freeman. Dans cet album sobrement intitulé Mario Canonge Trio, il revisite ses compositions passées et actuelles avec une paire rythmique de feu. À la contrebasse, il retrouve Michel Alibo, vieux compagnon de route avec lequel il était notamment au départ du groupe Sakiyo, éclair fulgurant dans la musique Caribéenne de la fin des années 80. Derrière les fûts, tout simplement le batteur le plus en vue et le plus demandé de la scène française, Arnaud Dolmen, dont le dernier album Adjusting (2022) lui a valu de recevoir le prix « Révélation » aux dernières Victoires du Jazz, ainsi que le titre de « Musicien de l'année » décerné par les rédactions de Jazz Magazine et Jazz News. Capté en public au Comptoir de Fontenay-sous-Bois en janvier 2023 pour le compte du label Aztec Musique, ce disque dévoile la complicité d'un trio où même les silences sont éloquents. Bei seinem Ausbruch 1995 erwischte er die Bewohner kalt. Seit dem 16. Jahrhundert hatte sich der Soufrière-Hills-Vulkan nicht geregt und auf einmal, nach 270 Jahren Dornröschenschlaf, war er erwacht. Der Vulkan begann Asche und Lava zu spucken, die Hauptstadt Plymouth, die an der Westseite des Vulkans liegt, musste evakuiert werden – bis heute können die Bewohner nicht zurückkehren. Immer noch sind zwei Drittel der Insel und ein Umkreis von zehn Seemeilen um den südlichen Teil der Insel Sperrgebiet. Le Piton de la Fournaise est situé à la Réunion, dans l'océan Indien, et un 4e volcan actif a été découvert en 2018 au large de Mayotte, à 3000 m de profondeur. Les célèbres volcans d'Auvergne de la chaîne des Puys sont des jeunots endormis. La dernière éruption en Auvergne date d'il y a 6 700 ans. Elle nous a laissé le lac Pavin dans le Puy-de-Dôme. Le convoi de l'armée française en route pour le Mali a de nouveau été pris à partie par des manifestants, mais cette fois-ci au Niger. Après avoir, plusieurs jours durant, été bloqué par plusieurs centaines de jeunes mobilisés par la « Coalition des patriotes africains du Burkina Faso » dans la localité de Kaya, le convoi militaire français, alors qu'il traversait Téra, dans l'ouest du Niger, a de nouveau été bloqué par « un millier de manifestants », précise l'état-major français, rapporte Le Journal du Dimanche. Auparavant, Le Canard Enchaîné s'était déjà ému de l'incident de Kaya, dans lequel cet hebdomadaire satirique discernait « une situation humiliante pour l'état-major » français. « Qui osera expliquer pour quelles raisons des soldats français en sont aujourd'hui à errer sur les routes du Sahel ? », se demandait déjà Le Canard Enchaîné, « ceux qui, à l'lysée ou ailleurs, vont devoir encore justifier la présence de Français au Sahel ont du pain sur la planche », remarquait l'irrévérencieux palmipède de la presse française.  L'autonomie antillaise ? Chiche ! Prise de position spectaculaire du ministre des Outre-mer dans la crise sociale qui secoue les Antilles françaises. Sébastien Lecornu, samedi, a ouvert la voie à un débat sur l'autonomie de la Guadeloupe. Cette île des Antilles françaises est « sur un volcan », lance Le Journal du Dimanche. Non pour évoquer la Soufrière, le volcan local, mais « la colère » qui s'est emparée de cette île des Antilles française, « comme un remake ultramarin des Gilets jaunes ».  Alors ? Alors le ministre des Outre-mer a lancé un pavé dans la mare. « Je n'aurai aucun tabou, a dit Sébastien Lecornu dans un message vidéo. Certains élus ont posé la question, en creux, de l'autonomie par rapport à son statut actuel de département ou région d'Outre-mer (…) Le gouvernement est prêt à en parler ». Pour Le Parisien Dimanche, le ministre des Outre-mer a ainsi joué « un coup de poker ». Certains acteurs guadeloupéens « demandent que le statut puisse évoluer vers une collectivité d'Outre-mer pour leur conférer plus d'autonomie, dit à ce journal Sébastien Lecornu. Ce n'est pas dans le projet du gouvernement, mais pourquoi refuser le débat ? ». Mais attention, complète-t-il, « autonomie ne veut pas dire indépendance. La Polynésie française et la Nouvelle-Calédonie sont déjà dans une logique d'autonomie. Or, ils ne menacent pas l'unité nationale ! (…) Je le redis, je n'ai pas peur des débats tabous (…) Je sais ce que je fais ». « L'autonomie, ce n'est certainement pas l'indépendance, répète-t-il dans Le Journal du Dimanche, je ne refuserai pas ce débat s'il est posé (…) Je préfère un débat franc autour de cette question que les faux-semblants », déclare Sébastien Lecornu dans Le JDD. Quand le congrès fait pschitt ! C'est à l'issue d'un congrès samedi prochain que le parti de droite Les Républicains désignera son candidat à l'élection présidentielle de 2022 en France. Mais quel qu'il (ou elle) soit, aucun des cinq prétendants, à ce stade, ne se qualifierait pour le second tour. « Nul "effet congrès" ne se fait ressentir dans les réponses des Français », constate Le Journal du Dimanche, sur la foi d'un sondage Ifop pour cet hebdomadaire et Sud-Radio. Si le premier tour avait lieu aujourd'hui, Emmanuel Macron arriverait en tête avec de 25 à 28% des intentions de vote, devant Marine Le Pen, de 19 à 20%, quel que soit le ou la candidat(e) Les Républicains. Dans tous les cas de figure également, Éric Zemmour pointerait en troisième position, avec entre 14 et 15%. Guillaume Peltier a changé d'avis. « J'ai décidé d'apporter mon parrainage et de voter au premier tour pour Éric Ciotti », dit le très droitier Guillaume Peltier au Parisien Dimanche. « Je ne souhaite plus d'étanchéité avec les électeurs d'Éric Zemmour et de Marine Le Pen. Comment prétendre réparer la France si nous mettons de côté 40 % des Français ? », se demande Guillaume Peltier dans Le Parisien Dimanche.

In 1979 The Beatles producer Sir George Martin turned a Caribbean paradise into a 1980s hit making crucible for the likes of Paul McCartney, Elton John, and such acts as the Rolling Stones, The Police, and Dire Straits. His vision was to create a studio where artists could come and be free to express their creativity and record albums.  After a decade of hits, and at the peak of its popularity, AIR Studios Montserrat was destroyed when hurricane Hugo hit the island in 1989, followed by the eruption of the Soufrière Hills volcano in 1995.  Acclaimed filmmaker Gracie Otto wrote and directed Under the Volcano (2021), in which she documented this incredible story. La Soufrière in St Vincent has been erupting! We chat with Oliver Higgins from the University of Geneva about the geologic context of  La Soufrière and talk about the eruption last week. 

La Soufriere volcano, in Saint Vincent & the Grenadines, has erupted, spewing ash and lava in a dramatic event that followed a declaration of disaster in the Caribbean nation. The “explosive eruption” began at 8:41 a.m. on Friday, according to the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWI-SRC). The centre had warned about alarming seismic activity at the volcano only a day prior. “All persons in the Red Zone are asked to evacuate immediately!” St. Vincent and the Grenadines' National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) said in a statement on Friday morning. We spoke to the geologist and volcanologist and the director of SRC, Dr. Richard Robertson, on the volcanic eruption of La Soufrière. Lava began oozing out of La Soufrière volcano in St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Dec. 29. Scientists with UWI Seismic Research Center,(SRC) located in Trinidad and Tobago, said there was no explosive eruption. Instead, the magma reaching the surface is forming a growing dome in La Soufrière's crater. The volcano is also releasing gas and steam thus causing the alert level on the northern end of the island of St. Vincent, where La Soufrière sits, been raised to orange. Volcanic landscapes often present advantages for people who inhabit the surrounding areas, but the increasing numbers of people threatened by potential activity increases as these settlements grow. It is thus of vital importance to glean as much information as possible by monitoring active volcanoes (including seismicity, ground deformation, gas flux and temperature changes). Although volcanic behaviour can be difficult to predict, precursory information can often be identified retrospectively (once an eruption begins) to help link antecedent behaviour to eruption attributes. Likewise, eruption relics can be used to identify processes in pre-eruptive magma. Additionally, a huge amount of information may be gathered through experimentation on rock and magma samples. This study combines field and analytical studies of natural samples from Volcán de Colima (Mexico), Mount St. Helens (USA) and Soufrière Hills (Montserrat) with high-temperature magma deformation experiments to investigate the processes involved with magma ascent during dome-building eruptions (Figure S-1). The study of conduit-dwelling magma is of the utmost importance for understanding transitions from effusive to explosive eruptions. Of primary interest is the rheology of highly crystalline magmas that make up the magma column. Rheology is integrally linked to the composition and textural state (porosity, crystallinity) of magma as well as the stress, temperature and strain rate operative during flow. Many studies have investigated the rheology of multi-phase magmas, but in Chapter 2 this is notably linked to the evolution of the physical properties of the magmas; tracing the changes in porosity, permeability, Poisson’s ratio, Young’s modulus during strain dependent magmatic flow. Especially at high strain rates mechanical degradation of the magma samples may supersede magmatic flow and crystal rearrangement as the dominant form of deformation, resulting in lower apparent viscosities than those anticipated from magmatic state. This leads to an evolution of the fracture network to form inhomogeneous distribution of the permeable porous network; with damage zones cutting through areas of densification. In a conduit setting this is analogous to the formation of a dense, impermeable magma plug which would prohibit degassing through the bulk of the magma. Degassing may or may not proceed along conduit margins, and the plug formation could lead to critical overpressures forming in the conduit and result in highly explosive eruption. During the multi-scale process of strain localisation it is also probable that another previously unforeseen character acts upon magma rheology. Chapter 3 details the first documentation of crystal plasticity in experimentally deformed multi-phase magmas. The extent of the crystal plasticity (evidenced by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD)) increases with increasing stress or strain, and thus remnant crystals may be used as strain markers. Thus it seems that crystal-plastic deformation plays a significant role in strain accommodation under magmatic conditions. Indeed plastic deformation of phenocrysts in conduit magmas may be an important transitional regime between ductile flow and brittle fracture, and a time-space window for such deformation is envisaged during the ascent of all highly-crystalline magmas. This phenomenon would favour strain localisation and shear zone formation at conduit margins (as the crystal-plastic deformation leads the magma toward brittle failure) and ultimately preferentially result in plug flow. During volcanic eruptions, the extrusion of high-temperature, high-viscosity magmatic plugs imposes frictional contact against conduit margins in a manner that may be considered analogous to seismogenic faults. During ascent, the driving forces of the buoyant magma may be superseded by controls along conduit margins; where brittle fracture and sliding can lead to formation of lubricating cataclasite, gouge or pseudotachylyte as described in Chapter 4 at Mount St. Helens. Within volcanic systems, background temperatures are significantly higher than the geotherm permits in other upper-crustal locations, whereas confining pressures are much lower than in high-temperature, lower-crustal settings: thus via their exceptional ambient P-T conditions, volcanic systems represent unique environments for faulting. This can result in the near-equilibrium melting and slow recrystallisation of frictional melt, which hinders the development of signature pseudotachylyte characteristics. Thus frictional melting may be more common than previously thought. Indeed Chapter 5 documents a second occurrence at Soufrière Hills volcano. Here, the formation is linked to repetitive seismic “drumbeats” which occurred during both the eruption at Mount St. Helens and at Soufrière Hills. Strain localisation, brittle rupture, sliding and the formation of shear bands along the conduit margin can have important implications for the dynamics of eruptions. Specifically, the capability of degassing via the permeable porous network may be strongly influenced by the formation of pseudotachylyte, which has almost no porosity. Based on the findings in chapters 4 and 5, a series of high-velocity rotary shear (HVR) experiments were performed. In Chapter 6 the results of these experiments demonstrate the propensity for melting of the andesitic and dacitic material (from Soufrière Hills and Mount St. Helens respectively) at upper conduit stress conditions (

Volcanic eruptions are one of the most spectacular and dangerous natural phenomena. Volcanic activity can either be effusive, dominated by quiescent emission of lava or explosive, dominated by the eruption of pyroclastic material. A rapid transition between these two regimes is possible. possible. On a broad scale, a clear distinction of the eruption style can be drawn by magma composition. Large-scale basaltic eruptions are mostly effusive, whereas large-scale silicic eruptions are mostly explosive. Thus silicic volcanism possesses a severe hazard potential and can have devastating effects on human population. This work comprises experimental investigations of the fragmentation behavior of porous magma as well as of the propagation of elastic waves within this material. The analyses were conducted on samples from Unzen Volcano, Japan as well as samples from Soufrière Hills Volcano, Montserrat, West Indies. The elastic wave velocities of differently porous Unzen dacite samples were investigated with the use of a cubic multi-anvil press. The main results of this study show that porosity (density) and texture affect the elastic properties of samples at a given temperature. In particular, it can be stated: (1) Seismic velocities increase with pressure due to compaction and closing of microcracks. The Vp anisotropy decreases with pressure for the same reason. (2) Increasing the temperature also leads to higher elastic wave velocities and lower anisotropies. This must be highlighted as the inverse behavior is documented for the majority of rocks. The effect may be linked to reduction of pore volume and further closing of microcracks due to reduction of cooling tensions. At 600 °C mean Vp values of 4.31 - 5.64 km/s and mean Vs* values of 2.20 - 3. 32 km/s could be determined. (3) The velocity anisotropy can be linked to the texture of the samples: Those with a high anisotropy show a pronounced shape-preferred orientation of phenocrysts and microcrystals, sometimes in addition to layering within the groundmass of the sample. Since the crystals are typically aligned parallel to walls of volcanic conduits, the velocity normal to the walls is likely to be reduced. The data allows better estimates of the properties of silicic volcanic rocks at shallow depths within volcanoes, e.g. at conduit walls. These estimates are vital for computation of conduit models as well as the modelling of volcano seismic data, and may lead to an improved analysis of precursor phenomena in volcanic areas. The physical properties of magma within volcanic conduits and domes are crucial for modelling eruptions. This study comprises a detailed investigation of the fragmentation behavior (threshold and propagation speed) of differently porous sets of dacitic and andesitic samples derived from Unzen Volcano, Japan and Soufrière Hills Volcano, Montserrat, West Indies. The experiments were performed with a shock-tube based fragmentation apparatus and pertain to the brittle fragmentation process. The results show a strong influence of the open porosity and the initial pressure on the fragmentation behavior. The speed of fragmentation follows a logarithmic relationship with the pressure difference, the fragmentation threshold an inversely proportional power-law relationship with increasing porosity. In this study fragmentation speed values ranging from 15 - 150 m/s were observed for applied pressure differences of up to 40 MPa and open porosities from 2.5 - 67.1 %. The expansion of the pressurized gas in the vesicles largely provides the energy driving the fragmentation process. The fragmentation speed results of all analyzed samples show a close relationship to the energy density (fragmentation energy standardized to volume). A logarithmical increase of the propagation speed was observed with the energy density as soon as the energy threshold of 2.0 x 0.5 J/m³ was exceeded. The fragmentation speed is independent from the origin and composition of the samples, proving the governing role of the energy to the initiation a propagation of fragmentation process. Different fragmentation mechanisms were discussed and the layer-by-layer fragmentation due to vesicle bursting is concluded to be the main process responsible for the disintegration of vesicular rocks. The increased importance of fracturing due to the passing of the unloading wave after a rapid decompression could be proved for low porous samples. Further the influence of the sample’s permeability on the fragmentation behavior was evaluated. It could be shown that a high permeability hinders the initiation of a fragmentation and reduces the propagation speed of this process at a certain energy density. The fragmentation results were applied to the dome collapse events and Vulcanian events of the 1990-1995 Unzen eruption and the 1997 Vulcanian events at Montserrat. Large blocks with layers of various porosity were observed at the block-and-ash flow deposits of Unzen Volcano and support the model that a dome and dome lobes consist of areas of differing porosity. In addition, the samples gained from Montserrat, allow to postulate a porosity gradient within a volcanic conduit, with low porous magma close to the conduit walls. A layered composition of a dome and dome lobes, respectively, may lead to the fragmentation of single layers, followed by the collapse of the overlaying sections. These events could catalyze gravitationally induced dome collapse events leading to vigorous pyroclastic flows and / or trigger a sector collapse followed by an Vulcanian event. A porosity gradient at the magma in the conduit leads to a concave shape of the fragmentation surface and facilitates lateral fragmentation of dense magma close to the conduit walls. Conduit implosion may to occur during most explosive eruptions and is likely to influence the cessation or pulsation of the eruption. The slow magma ascent and extrusion rate at Unzen resulted in relatively dense extruded magma, as the magma could almost completely degas during the ascent. The low porosity of this magma causes a high fragmentation threshold of most material, which is too high for unassisted fragmentation. Therefore dome collapse events were the most abundant events of the 1990-1995 activity of Unzen Volcano, leading to numerous block-and-ash flows. Also the fragmentation-amplified collapse of dome lobes or parts of the dome are reasonable. This accounts especially for the long lasting collapse events with vigorous pyroclastic flows at the early stage of the eruption in June 1991, which were followed by minor Vulcanian events. Nevertheless a larger explosive event would have been possible, triggered by a landslide or a sector collapse of the dome. Similarly to Unzen, the first phase of activity of the recent eruption of Montserrat is characterized by numerous dome collapse events leading to violent pyroclastic flows. As the magma extrusion rate was quite high during this phase, the extruded magma was higher vesiculated compared to the Unzen magma and thus a more violent evolution of the eruption activity took place. Large dome collapse events frequently caused Vulcanian events, and even two cycles of Vulcanian activity from August to September 1997 occurred. The calculations of the fragmentation depth, reached by this explosions yielded about 1500 m, based on the laboratory gained fragmentation speeds, which is in good agreement numerical models and observations. In silicic volcanic systems the conduit seems not to be sharply defined. The conduit walls are more to be seen as a kind of transition zone between a hot, ductile and vesicular magma within the conduit and the host rock. The rocks forming this transition zone are assumed to be quite hot, but presumably below glass transition and react therefore solely brittle. Furthermore these rocks should be quite dense, compared to magma in the conduit, and heavily fractured due to the high shear strains this zone is presumably exposed to. The transition zone is less likely affected by a fragmentation event. Their rocks (magma as well as host rocks) are too dense to fragment due to pore pressure. The needed pressure difference is unrealistically high, for example an overpressure of 18 MPa would be needed to initiate the fragmentation of rocks with a porosity of 7.5 %. Nevertheless this material may be found in the deposits of explosive events, due to processes like conduit wall erosion or as remnant of dense lenses within more porous areas. Indeed, also fragmentation may take place, the most likely process fragmenting even this dense material is by lateral fragmentation, which may occur from a certain depth on behind a fast propagating fragmentation of highly vesicular magma at the center of the conduit. The style and progression of an eruption is depending on the properties of this vesicular magma. If its fragmentation threshold can be exceeded, an explosive event may take place. Otherwise the magma is extruded quiescent in a dome forming eruption. The transition zone bears important implications on the one hand for the explosive event as a lateral fragmentation of a certain area may cause cessation or pulsation of the event, on the other hand for the propagation of seismic signals related to the eruption. Within this transition zone as well as the nearby host rock a decisive change of temperature and porosity can be supposed. This leads to a significant shift of the elastic wave velocities within this zone, sometimes resulting in trapped waves within this zone as observed for Montserrat. Especially the abnormal velocity increase with increasing temperatures has to be mentioned. Thus implications for an overall view of a volcanic system are provided in this study, with the transition zone as the common link. The properties of the elastic wave velocities account for the for host rock as well as the transition zone and bear vital constraints for the interpretation and modelling of volcano seismic data. The results of the fragmentation experiments are applicable for dome rocks, the vesicular interior of a conduit as well as the transition zone and contain important implications for the modelling of conduit processes. Together the results of this study may contribute to a refined understanding of processes typical for silicic volcanism. This may allow an improved analysis of precursor phenomena in volcanic areas and consequently provide important constraints to the hazard and risk management.
