Lisbeth Salander POWRACA! It was directed by David Fincher with a screenplay by Steven Zaillian.

Summary: Get those reading glasses on and join us for some extra nerdy energy this week, friends! Holly and Devin discuss Modern Classics today - those works post World War II that created pivot points in the cannon for the Thriller and Romance genres. In this era, ideas about race, gender and class are shifting as readers broadened their understanding of an interconnected world. Sexual liberation and violent horrors that had previously been viewed as outrageous become commonplace, so of course both our hosts have a blast this episode!  Topics Discussed: The Dagger (3:02): Holly discussed The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson, a Nordic crime fiction novel following Mikael Blomkvist (journalist and publisher) and Lisbeth Salander (a computer hacker) as they investigate the disappearance of a woman 40 years ago. Together, Blomkvist and Salander uncover the secrets of the woman's family through the darkest corners of Swedish society. Holly's key takeaways were: The novel delves into themes of violence, sexual abuse, and family secrets. It explores how individuals and families can hide dark and painful truths, often at great cost including corruption and financial malfeasance.  Lisbeth is a central character who represents female empowerment; her intelligence, resilience and capacity for self-defense are key elements in the story. Larsson explores issues of gender and the societal treatment of women.  This novel had a significant cultural impact and made important contributions to the mystery and thriller genres. Specifically, the complex female protagonist, darker themes, moral ambiguity and critique of society are now common in the genre, begun by Larsson in 2005.  The Heart (20:31): Devin discussed The Lion's Daughter by Loretta Chase, a bodice-ripper romance from 1992 following the fiery-haired and -tempered Esme Brentmore as she works to avenge her father's (supposed) murder, entangled all the way with the scoundrel and handsome rake, Varian St. George. They roam the country of Albania as fiendish plots and unspoken feelings bring them together and threaten to tear them apart. Devin's key takeaways were: This novel and others by Chase are part of the bodice-ripper romance era (think: woman in silk dress laid sensually in a field with her blouse exposing ample cleavage). Bodice Rippers are known for “exotic” locations, sexually explicit material, heroines with careers outside of housewife/mother who are also virginal yet fierce and handsome alpha males bent on seducing and dominating that woman.  Chase brings all the above tropes to the table with the country of Albania as the background. Albanian herself, Chase adds a real air of authenticity to Esme, who was born and raised in Albania by her English father, Jason, and to many of the colorful side characters.  The romance in this novel is filled with delightful tension (once you become aware that Esme is over 18 and there is therefore no statutory rape going on - yikes) and a lot of “I must have you” energy. Esme is witty, combative, and quick to anger. Varian is immature, selfish, and devastatingly charming (also known as a fuckboi). Hot On the Shelf (48:50): Holly: Birnam Wood by Eleanor Catton Devin: Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros What's Making Our Hearts Race (53:09): Holly: Stray, the video game  Devin: Our Flag Means Death on HBO Max   Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com   If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

The Girl in the Eagle's Talons by Karin Smirnoff: This is the latest book in the Millennium series which was started by Stieg Larsson who wrote the first three books, before he died. The estate then commissioned David Lagercrantz to do three more in the series and now there's the next one, the first to be done by a woman. It's more of that very gritty Scandinavian crime. Millennium magazine has finally hit the dust and Mikael Blomkvist is licking his wounds, trying to reconcile himself to a modern world of podcasts rather than the printed version - and travels north to see his daughter who's about to get married to a very shady civil servant who's involved in some shady goings on about the development of a new wind farm and what it will take to win the locals over and to persuade some landowners to sell to the developers. Turns out Lisbeth Salander is also in the area, having been asked to take on the care and protection of her niece, which is a job she's entirely unsuited for and unwilling to perform. Really nice to be reading about her again.  Would that be Funny? by Lorin Clarke. Lorin is John Clarke's daughter and has written a memoir about what it was like growing up with someone who was not only so very famous but also so incredibly funny, all the time. As many families do, they had their own language for things, some of which is hilarious - she gives lots of  words and the Clarke family definitions of them, it's a bit like a secret society. John wrote his own book a few years ago, called Tinkering, but to read about him from someone who knew him intimately and has inherited his love of words and humour is really lovely. It's a great tribute to him.  LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We'll look at the fjords, ride the metro, and definitely overlook the country's seething undercurrents of fascism, racism, and misogyny... Just kidding, we're talking about David Fincher and Steven Zaillian's unflinching adaptation of Stieg Larsson's brutal mystery/social commentary, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011). Starring Rooney Mara in the titular role as hacker Lisbeth Salander opposite Daniel Craig as journalist Mikael Blomkvist, Dragon Tattoo is a excoriating examination of Sweden's dark side – both its history of Nazi collaboration and its present mistreatment of women, immigrants, and the neuro-atypical. It's also a crackling thriller about two unusual investigators uncovering one family's extensive and often horrifying secrets as they unlock a 40-year-old mystery. 5 New Reasons To Write Better Podcast Show Notes

Too many podcasters skip a key step when publishing: the episode details. Or show notes, as you've likely called them. This helpful text isn't optional. It's required. And I'll give you five new reasons why. Photo by https://www.pexels.com/photo/woman-with-beaded-necklace-covering-her-mouth-with-her-hand-8689920/ (Mikael Blomkvist from Pexels) Four years ago, I implored my fledgling audience to spend more time making better episode details. "Stop writing shitty show notes!" I said.  That's still excellent advice. But the reasons why have changed a lot since 2018. That, and not everyone heard my plea, so I'm making it again but updating it to reflect 2022 realities for podcasting.  Reason #1: Podcast players are getting better.  They're more functional, often giving listeners plenty of reasons to interact with the episode as it plays. Other shows are doing it. You should be too. Reason #2: Podcast credits are becoming a thing. I love hearing  2–3 minute credit rolls. What I don't love is not knowing the proper spelling or knowing where to find more about that important person. Text! Links! Images! Please?  Reason #3: Episode details are a good SEO practice. Yes, podcast apps suck at search. But some are getting better, and more of us making solid episode details encourage more app developers to take this issue seriously. Reason #4: Episode details make for great repurposed content! Twitter threads. Long-form posts on LinkedIn. An idea generator for spreading the episode far and wide. A savvy podcaster will find plenty of uses for a well-written summary. Reason #5: Good episode details prime you to do more in the future. Listening apps are evolving and adding more functionality. So getting in the habit now of taking the time to write quality episode details will keep your eye on the future.  ----- Sponsored by: https://evoterra.link/captivate (Captivate.fm, the world's only growth-oriented podcast hosting company) ----- Links ----- https://soundsprofitable.com/thedownload (The Download) http://soundsprofitable.com (Sounds Profitable) Got a podcasting service? https://podcastpontifications.com/about/sponsorship-information (Become a sponsor of Podcast Pontifications). Here is that quote from Robyn Schneider. In her book, Extraordinary Means, he writes: “Being temporary doesn't make something matter any less, because the point isn't for how long, the point is that it happened.” We'll discuss why people tend to cling to or demonize relationships or situations and how that hinders you from leveling up. We'll also consider the idea that everything happens for a reason. Hi! I hope you've had a joyful week! Welcome back to the Live Curious Die Wild Podcast, I'm your host, atlas amari. Darf man Beethovens unfertige 10.

It's the start of the Benjamin Button-style Fincher-Fest, movie lovers! And what better way to kick it off than to take a look at David Fincher's current film, "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," based on Stieg Larsson's first book in his internationally best-selling "Millenium" trilogy. It's already racking up end-of-the-year accolades and incredible buzz about Rooney Mara's knock-your-socks-off performance of Lisbeth Salander (all well-earned), even though some contingents of fans of the original Swedish films (great films in their own right that only came out last year) question why Hollywood felt it so necessary to adapt the books again so quickly after the others were made. The Swedish films certainly put Noomi Rapace and Michael Nyqvist -- who play Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist, respectively -- on the map in international casting circles (Rapace has since appeared in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and just wrapped in Ridley Scott's Prometheus while Nyqvist appeared in John Singleton's Abduction earlier this year and currently can be seen in Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol.) In this episode, we talk about the various iterations of this first of Larsson's stories -- did the Americans need to make their own version, what works in each version and what doesn't, what did Fincher and his team bring to the table, etc. We work to put in context what the Swedish film is to Swedish audiences by comparing similar statistics with American films. We discuss the performances -- Rooney Mara's brilliant work as well as the amazing Daniel Craig who we both feel isn't just playing James Bond in Sweden. We discuss the change in the end of the story and how we feel about it as well as all of the sequences that come after the climax. We chat about the team behind this -- Steven Zaillian who is having a great year with this and Moneyball, Jeff Cronenweth, Ren Klyce, Kirk Baxter, Angus Wall, Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross -- and that's just some of the crew! Robin Wright, Stellan Skarsgard, Julian Sands and the always amazing Christopher Plummer all give brilliant performances. One actor we don't mention in this episode but who is worth mentioning here is Yorick van Wageningen, the poor actor stuck with playing the brutal role of Nils Bjurman. He was so traumatized after filming his pivotal rape scene with Mara that he locked himself in his hotel room for a day and cried. Obviously his choice to take the role, but it's always good to be reminded that an actor is not the character they portray. So if you haven't had a chance to read the book or watch either film version, go do so before listening in because we have some spoilers, then tune in and join us as we take on this fascinating murder mystery with one of film's most intriguing characters in years.

As excited as we are to see David Fincher's adaptation of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," we know the Swedes did it first. Before seeing what Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara do with Stieg Larsson's international bestseller, we decided to take in Niels Arden Oplev's interpretation, starring Mikael Blomkvist and Noomi Rapace. Although we've not read the books (we plan to!), we were curious whether the well-received Swedish version leaves any room for an American remake.
