In today's episode, I'm joined by Noel Coakley, someone I've known from a distance since high school. Back then, he was just my friend's cool older brother, but little did I know, he had already started his meditation journey in 1996. Fast forward to today, and Noel is blending Buddhism, psychology, meditation, and trauma-informed Western psychology to support his clients. He's also the founder and director of the Boston Center for Contemplative Practice.Noel's approach to wholeness, both in life and in his work, really resonates with me, and I was excited to explore how these teachings can deepen our understanding of ourselves. In this episode, we dive into the spiritual aspects of parenting, how Buddhism can inform our approach to life and leadership, and Noel shares a transformational practice that really aligns with shadow work.Noel discusses his work, emphasizing the importance of unconditional love and the concept of Buddha nature. He shares a practice called Guru Yoga, which involves visualizing an unconditional loving being to reconnect with one's inherent wholeness. The conversation highlights the integration of spirituality and therapy, the challenges of parenting, and the ongoing practice of self-awareness and compassion. Noel hosts annual retreats, courses, and more - make sure to connect with Nore for more. Of all the means to attain self-realization, for Krishna, love is the highest. When the devotion is such that nothing outside can tempt us anymore; when we become so absorbed in the Beloved that we forget ourselves, we merge into him. Vasant Swaha reads Krishna's words on meditation through the path of Guru Yoga. Vasant Swaha is a modern mystic sharing his love, joy, and wisdom in retreats. Since 2020, we've given quite a few lectures on the Guru Tattva (Guru Principle) since this is indeed of the main features of the Tantrik tradition. But what exactly is lineage based transmission? Some people feel, because of the influence of modernism and individualism, that they don't need a Guru and because of this they get into trouble or waste time in spiritual life going around in circles. Others on the other end of the spectrum become too attached to their guru's physical form and personality and as such end up making a cult-figure out of their human gurus, become too dependent and as a result, fail to make appreciable spiritual progress! As you can see, Guru-Yoga, the art of practicing spirituality under the guidance of a human teacher, is a rather subtle and delicate art with many nuances! Anyway, over the years, most of the material I've presented in my lectures on the subject have been drawn from a series of lectures by Swami Vivekananda which appear in Volume III of his Complete Works. In this talk, in celebration of the Guru Purnima that just happened, I read out these talks to you so we can hear Swamiji's own thoughts on Guru-Yoga, in his own words! We first open with a philosophically nuanced reflection on God and just what that means. In this interview I am once again joined by Dr Nida Chenagtsang, Buddhist teacher, doctor of Tibetan Medicine, and author of ‘Let Meditation Be Your Medicine: The Timeless Healing Wisdom of Tibet'. Dr Nida discusses his latest book, the practicality of the Yuthok Nyingthik meditation system, and why it is important to choose a meditation style that suits one's typology. Dr Nida explains why he opens the book with a tribute to the Ancient Greek physician Hippocrates, recounts how he came to a deep appreciation of the roots of European culture, and parses the difference between intellectual and experiential spirituality. Dr Nida also calls for a moving beyond conditioned views, explains how to appreciate culture and religion without being limited by them, considers attachment theory and guru-disciple dynamics, and reveals how transformative retreat experience brought him beyond conceptual limitations. … Link in comments. Guru-Yoga is the central practice of the Tantrik tradition. In fact, I would go so far as to say that in any genuine mystical tradition, the role of a living teacher is highly emphasized: in Christian mysticism, its the spiritual perception/director/elder; in Sufism its the Affendi; in Jainism, Buddhism and Hinduism its the Guru. My guru likes to say: the human Guru is a matchmaker who marries you to God, who alone is the Guru, and Who, in Truth is what You are at the essence of your Being. Yes, the Guru is certainly IN you AS you but long before you can benefit from inner direction, you'll need a human teacher to mirror for you, model for you and instruct you in spiritual life. Like with all things in life, we need teachers. But what qualifies a person to become a spiritual teacher? Some time ago, we had a talk where we explored Swami Vivekananda's criterion for a genuine teacher that appears in the Bhakti Yoga book. And long before that, on Guru Purnima some years ago, we offered a lecture on Guru Yoga in general where we explored a few Tantras like the Kula-Arnava Tantra to get a sense for what guruhood really is according to the Tantrik traditionSince Guru Purnima is coming up yet again, I thought it'd be nice to revisit that discussion, especially since last week we had such an extension discussion on the importance of shāstra, scriptures and also since we're currently discussing the Nārada Bhakti Sutra in which we find this profound set of verses:भवतु न चयदा याद ू व शा र णम्।१२-१.१२अ यथा पा त यश कया । १३ - १.१३ "Until one is unshakeably enlightened, one should follow the scriptures." (12) "Otherwise, there is a fear of fall (from spiritual life)." (13) What does it mean to "fall"? In this talk, I make the case that "falling" for both a practitioner and a more importantly, a practitioner who teaches others is non-adherence to or general disrespect/irreverence for the tradition's scriptures. Remember, this conversation is the follow up to last week's discussion on the importance of scripture (which features a very clear definition of what we mean by "scripture")This is one lecture in a series on the Nārada Bhakti Sutra which you can follow along with hereThese classes meet live every Friday evening at 6pm PST via this zoom link: https://www.zoom.us/j/7028380815For more videos, guided meditations and instruction and for access to our lecture library, visit me at:https://www.patreon.com/yogawithnishTo get in on the discussion and access various spiritual materials, join our Discord here: Support the show
This morning prayer invites you to delight in your human existence and to freely call out for divine assistance. It is based on a Tibetan Buddhist daily practice called "Nectar of the Path" taught by Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche. It includes The Four Thoughts, Refuge & Bodhichitta, and Guru Yoga. In some cases, I have put the prayers into my own words to make them relatable to a non-buddhist. The original text is available through Tergar.org. Zim Pickens looks at the origins of guru or lama worship in Tibet, introducing us to the Indian antecedents and the Tibetan emphasis on the role and status of the lama. In the twelfth century, Indian and Tibetan Buddhist authors drew from doctrinal and scriptural sources to promote new rites for worshipping the guru in the manner of a buddha. First, we will examine how Anupamavajra and Sa skya Paṇḍita cite earlier models for relating to a guru—performing acts of service and following commands—to respectively argue that the gurumaṇḍala and guru yoga (bla ma'i rnal ‘byor) rites are in keeping with Buddhist tradition. We will then turn to bKa' brgyud material, including guru yoga, in which the Tibetan lama supplants Indic buddhas and deities as the primary object of worship. The popularization of preliminary practices (sngon ‘gro) almost entirely focused on the lama demonstrates the lasting effect of such developments on Tibetan Buddhist traditions.

Exploring dreams is a powerful way to integrate psychedelic experiences. Our guest is Dr Tom Whalen. We talk about differences and similarities between dreaming and psychedelics in brain activation and in the abundance of various neuro transmitters. Tom talks about the importance of working with dreams non-interpretively since offered ideas can overrule the innate wisdom of the dreamer. We talk about Guru Yoga and also Tom's approach to working with dreams which he calls a Dream Koan practice. He will be presenting his work at the IASD conference in Tucson in July. We end with Tom demonstrating his non-interpretive approach by exploring a dream with Katherine. BIO: Tom Whalen is an MD practicing pain medicine. For the last 15 years, he's been following advances in neuroscience, including the use of psychedelics to treat addiction and PTSD. His passion lies in the realms of spiritual practice. He has been practicing Zen since 1971 and Archetypal Dreamwork since 1989. With these two practices, he has synthesized a “new” form of Zen practice, which he calls Dream-Koan practice. In this episode we explore eight different branches of yoga: Tantra, Hatha, Bhakti, Karma, Mantra, Jnana, Raja, and Guru Yoga. That's right - eight different branches of yoga - because yoga means so much more than making postures. Yoga, stemming from Hinduism, means to yoke oneself with the Divine. Enjoy a conversation between two best friends playfully discuss these yogic branches. They also compare and contrast the Hindu path of liberation with the Buddhist path of self-realization.Also discussed today: the mother wound, Krishna Das, the pineal gland, and more.Trigger warning: brief description of a sexual assault. To see links to topics discussed in this episode, visit our website show notes.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
When talking about the Guru, we must distinguish between the external form and the Guru in our heart: "The illustrative guru, who is the external form of the guru, illustrates through his teachings the actual guru, which is the luminosity within your own heart. The guru's instructions awaken the ultimate guru within." In this statement, the outer guru called "the illustrative guru," the one who has realized the nature of mind (Buddha nature) and shows this nature to you so that you can then realize the nature of mind. The outer guru is called the illustrative guru because he gives us the indication that leads us to realize the ultimate guru. When this happens, you will realize the bond between your mind and the mind of the guru. It is like the string of a mala. You will realize the nature of your own mind and the nature of the guru's mind to be the same by nature, an inseparable union. When this awareness occurs, you will see your own true nature, which is when you see the ultimate guru being your Buddha nature. But because we do not recognize it, we just ignore our true nature. That is why we rely on the master, on the outer guru, the rupakaya "master who appears in an ordinary form with a face and hands”. The illustrative guru manifests to us in order to help us realize the ultimate guru, which is the clear light in the center of our hearts. Once this is awakened through the teacher's instructions, it is precisely this that we put into practice: the ultimate teacher beyond any arising. - Garchen Rinpoche --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/enlightenverse/message

Khenpo Sherab Sangpo gives instructions on how to practice Guru Yoga, the merging of one's mind with the Guru's enlightened nature. Guru yoga is a powerful way to transform every event in our life into practice and to remove obstacles on the spiritual path that prevent us from recognizing the nature of our minds, our Buddha nature. All accomplishments are due to the Guru's blessings. We are not referring to minor accomplishments (...) but to supreme realization of the Guru's enlightened nature, which is none other than our own Buddha nature. -- Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche Please visit our website to learn more about Khenpo Sherab Sangpo, his teachings and for practice texts. Episode 8: Anne Klein/Lama Rigzin Drolma teaches about the true meaning of Guru Yoga, a very special practice of central importance to tantra. Although it might seem that we’re seeking a connection with an external teacher, Guru Yoga ultimately directs us to the true nature of our own mind–the greatest guru of all.

Today's theme: Yoga From Hot Yoga to Flying Yoga, there are many different Yoga classes available here in Korea. While some say Yoga is a postural practice or a form of exercise, others argue that from looking into the historical traditions of Yoga, one can cultivate transcendental state of spirituality. We look into practitioners' spiritual and physical intentions and Yoga's transformation over time throughout the world. The Conversationalist with Jane Aquino - Seoul-based actress and model & Yoga instructor - Having learned Yoga in a Certificate Raja Yoga Program. She has learned about chackras, energy control and perhaps most importantly, how to live a more balanced and healthy life. “Yoga is gaining popularity not only in western countries but also here in Korea as well. What do you think about the Yoga culture here in Korea? Has its popularity grown over the years? Do you think of this as a lasting lifestyle, or just a fad passing by? What do you think about the commercialization of yoga and just focusing on its diet effects rather than the core philosophy?” & Ayman Al-Khatib - founder of Guru Yoga group in Lebanon - He traveled to Nepal, South India and many other places and studied in an ashram in India. He is now dedicated to share the traditional Yogic philosophy and science in Lebanon and worldwide “Yoga is often described as “the journey to the self.” Can you first tell us about your journey of self-discovery and how yoga changed your path? I heard you always say in your classes ‘Observe without judgment.' Why is it important to remove judgment in our lives and how can yoga help achieve that?” Media Monster Novel Go by Kazuki Kaneshiro Next week: Stephen Hawking

Introducing the Vimalakīrti Nirdeśha Sūtra, Gelek Rimpoche and Professor Thurman discuss mistaken relationships with Buddhist gurus and books, particularly in the West. They offer guidance for identifying a good guru and for maintaining a healthy relationship with the guru. In monastic Buddhism, the abbot is not a big boss and obedience is not a big virtue for the Buddhist monk or mendicant. In the Mahayana tradition, the spiritual friend is a teacher emphasizing how you have to get out there and do your own bodhisattva deeds and become a Buddha. "In the Tantric and esoteric teachings, the guru figure, which in Tibetan is translated as the “Lama,” is brought back into play. In Tantra you're dealing with the unconscious; therefore you need someone upon whom to project different things to help you work out new relationships, like you do in psychotherapy. Also, there's the initiatory practice of seeing the guru as the living embodiment of the Buddha when the teachings are transmitted to you. The Tibetans have a proverb: “The best guru is one who lives at least three valleys away,” which means you receive the teaching and some initiatory consecration—and then you don't hang out with that person to see how ordinary they are!" Robert A.F. Thurman via www,tricycle.org. Professor Thurman also continues with a reading of a humorous anecdote about Śhāriputra from the Vimalakīrti Sūtra to illustrate some common misconceptions about meditation. Professor Thurman's translation of the Vimalakīrti Nirdeśha Sūtra can be found in his book The Holy Teaching of Vimalakīrti online: www.read.84000.co.
