Hello Friends on the path…I've known about the struggles of some of my favorite philosophers…Krishnamurti suffered from terrible migraines. Ram Dass had a massive stroke. Yogananda had crippling pain from apparently taking on the karma of his devotees. Anyone in a physical body suffers. Facts. But the accounts I found most helpful were those of teachers who struggled with anxiety and panic. Teachers of mind mastery who had to face these kinds of inner hurdles struck me deeply. Two of whom helped me relax into deep self compassion: Adyashanti and Mingyur Rinpoche, and I've found a way to loop their teaching back to one of Audrey Lourdes' pillars:“Nothing I accept about myself can be used against me to diminish me.”I'm sharing their enlightening humanness in today's WITH LOVE, DANIELLE (Eps 104) as part of my 4 part series on Healing With Anxiety. Citações e trechos do livro “A Marvelous Garland of Rare Gems”, de Nyoshul Khenpo Rinpoche.

My Tai Chi” to fruition (and just published by Harper Collings), with Reed's wife, artist Laurie Anderson”. Lou Reed was a musician, singer, songwriter, poet, and founding member of the legendary rock band the Velvet Underground. He collaborated with many artists, from Andy Warhol and John Cale to Robert Wilson and Metallica. Reed had a groundbreaking solo career that spanned five decades until his death in 2013. Reed was also an accomplished martial artist whose practice began in the 1980s. He studied with Chen Tai Chi pioneer Master Ren GuangYi. This book is a comprehensive collection of Reed's writings on Tai Chi. It includes conversations with Reed's fellow musicians, artists, friends, and Tai Chi practitioners, including Julian Schnabel, A. M. Homes, Hal Willner, Mingyur Rinpoche, Eddie Stern, Tony Visconti, and Iggy Pop. “The Art of the Straight Line. My Tai Chi” features Reed's unpublished writings on the technique, practice, and purpose of martial arts, as well as essays, observations, and riffs on meditation and life. Stephan Berwick is a martial arts instructor, performer, and researcher, specializing in Chen Tai Chi and Chinese swordsmanship. As an original student of Master Ren, Berwick conducted primary research at Tai Chi's birthplace in Henan, China over two decades ago. From that research, Berwick published the first English language profiles of the emerging Chen village masters, and other works on traditional martial arts. Before devoting himself to Chen Tai Chi, Stephan was one of the two first Americans – with Asia's top action star, Donnie Yen – to train in Xian, China under its national martial arts champion, Zhao Changjun and his coach, Bai Wenxiang. With Yen, Berwick went on to perform in Hong Kong action films under the tutelage of the director, Yuen Woping, as one of the few Western martial artists to star in Chinese action films. Years later, he met and befriended Lou Reed in 2003 at a national martial arts event with Master Ren. Born in 1975 in the Himalayan border regions between Tibet and Nepal, Mingyur Rinpoche is among the generation of Tibetan lamas trained outside of Tibet, and he's also a gifted meditator. His brain activity has been measured during meditation, earning him the nickname of "happiest man on earth." He fuses scientific and spiritual considerations, explaining meditation as a physical as well as a spiritual process. Mingyur gknows from experience that meditation can change the brain. He experienced panic attacks as a child that he was able to overcome through intensive meditation. If diligently practiced, meditation can affect the "neuronal gossip"—his imaginative rendering of brain cell communication—that keeps us stuck in unhappy behaviors. The meditation master offers a wide variety of techniques, counseling ease in practice to avoid boredom or aversion. Less is more; practice shorter periods more often, he says. His approach will be especially welcome for anyone frustrated by meditation or convinced they're "not doing it right." Originally published in August of 2010.

A conversation with psychologist and meditation teacher nico hase, whose life revolves around long retreats and deep practice. Among other things, we speak about identity, the self, the differences between western psychology and eastern meditation practices, and to what purpose each of them serve. How already at 14 - 15 years old there was distressing stuff going on in nico's family, and how he was impacted by that. He didn't know how to deal with all that anger and internal distress. Then he came across a book by meditation teacher Joseph Goldstein, and that turned everything around… Joseph's book, Insight Meditation, spoke about suffering being an inevitable part of life - AND about the path out of suffering. nico tells us about the experiences of his first meditation retreat, both the difficulties, but also a small opening, and with that a realisation that this could actually lead to peace of mind. Only 18 years old he did a moth long retreat. At 19 a 5 months retreat, and shortly after that he became a zen-monk and moved into a zen-monastery. nico says he feels that meditation saved him, and he tells us about the intense practice at the zen-centre. How nico has practiced intensely both in the zen tradition, the insight tradition and the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Good zen books to read: Shunryu Suzuki: “Zen-mind beginners mind” and “Enlightenment unfolds” by teachers at San Fransisco zen-centre. How meeting his future wife, Devon, while still at the zen-centre also introduced him to Tibetan Buddhism. How meeting Mingyur Rinpoche, a renowned Tibetan teacher, made him go fully into Tibetan Buddhism. How looking back at the suffering he experienced when he was very young, is interesting, because now, he can hardly recognise that person. How his meditation training has made him able to work constructively with his mind when he gets thrown or upset. nico's thoughts on comparison between western psychology (he has a phd in psychology) and meditation practice, and how the ultimate goal of the two practices is very different. How to bring your mind into a more peaceful state with meditation. How to break the grip that your thoughts normally have on you, and how you can then look at your mind, and see your mind clearly, and how from there you can slowly learn to let go. How the goal in psycho therapy is to get people who are in distress back to normal, whereas in Buddhist practice, it is assumed that you are already pretty healthy when you start, and your seeking is more existential, and the goal is enlightenment. How it came about that nico not so long ago changed his name How intense meditation practice does bring about big changes in our inner self, and how ingrained patterns can fall away. We talk about how identity is more of a process and less of a fixed, defined, static and reliable entity. How not having to defend this fixed personality is liberating. We talk about how to be with and support someone who is feeling a lot of distress: to just be with them, and let them know that all these feelings are normal and okay How it doesn't work to give somebody advise who didn't ask for it. www.devonandnicohase.com www.duritaholm.com

The conversation begins with a look at neurophenomenology, a term coined by the groundbreaking scientist Francisco Varela, that underlies much of the scientific exploration of meditation. How can we honor first-person (phenomenology) and third-person (neuroscience) perspectives without reducing one to the other. Antoine discusses his extensive research around pain, and the importance of functional de-coupling and deautomatization. We're essentially automatons, running on automatic ignorance, where everything we experience is automatically referenced to self, a contraction/referencing that creates all our suffering. This unconscious process also generates the sense of duality altogether, which could be studied in the lab. Are there neurological signatures for the experience of nonduality – and why does that matter? What is the promise and peril of scientifically studying meditators? Why should a meditator care about any of this? Using science, philosophy, psychology and the wisdom traditions, this conversation ranges from the theoretical to the personal, from the abstract (intersubjective realism) to the practical (how to work with pain). Discover why Dr. Lutz is one of the pioneering researchers exploring the meditative mind, and how this work can benefit the world. More about Antoine: Dr. Antoine Lutz is currently a director of research at the French Medical Research Institute (INSERM) in the Lyon Neuroscience Research Center (CNRL) where he co-leads the Experiential Neuroscience and Mental Training Team (EDUWELL). After a Master degree in engineering and a BA in philosophy at the Sorbonne under the direction of Natalie Depraz, he did his PhD in cognitive neurosciences in Paris, France, with Francisco Varela where he applied for the first time his neurophenomenology program to study the neural correlates of attention and perception. Since 1998, he has studied meditation with various teachers including Mingyur Rinpoche, Tsoknyi Rinpoche, Matthieu Ricard and Joseph Goldstein. During his postdoctoral work with Richard Davidson, at the University of Madison-Wisconsin, he studied using neuroimaging techniques meditation practices such as mindfulness or compassion meditations in expert meditators and in novices who learnt to meditate using the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program (MBSR). In 2008, Richard Davidson and him were awarded a NIH-NCCAM grant to fund in Madison the first American Center of Excellence on Research dedicated to neurophysiological study of meditation practices. After working for ten years in the US as a research scientist, he joined the Lyon Neuroscience Research Center in France in January 2013. His current research group focuses on the neurophenomenology of mindfulness and compassion meditations and on the impact of these practices on consciousness, attention and emotion regulations, and pain perception as measured by cognitive, affective and social neuroimaging paradigms using EEG, MEG, intra-cortical EEG, and fMRI. This research is currently funded by a European ERC consolidator grant (Brain&Mindfulness, 2014-2021).

The first is In Love with Life by Mingyur Rinpoche, a fun read about a renowned Tibetan master who decides to leave his identity as a reincarnate lama in order to spend four years on a wandering retreat. He brings the bardo teachings into real life, both as a way of talking about leaving his old identity behind and when he nearly dies of food poisoning and has a near death experience. The movie recommendation is Unmistaken Child, a sweet and beautiful movie that takes us inside the process of a devoted Tibetan monk and student searching for the reincarnation of his master. "Effortless Mindfulness is letting go of present moments, thoughts, and attention to open to a naturally wise, compassionate awareness that is connected in the Now. " – Loch Kelly Loch Kelly, M.Div., LCSW, is an author, meditation teacher, licensed psychotherapist, and founder of Open-Hearted Awareness Institute, a nonprofit located in New York. Author of the best-selling and award-winning book The Way of Effortless Mindfulness, Loch is a recognized leader in the field of meditation, and offers tools for effortless mindfulness. He served on the New York Insight Teachers Council, studied extensively with Mingyur Rinpoche, and was invited to teach direct realization by Adyashanti, an American-born spiritual teacher who has been teaching for more than 20 years. “There is more to effortless mindfulness than meditation,” Loch says. “Effortless mindfulness is primarily an off-the-meditation-cushion way of weaving together contemplation and compassionate actions. Effortless mindfulness begins by opening to a natural spacious awareness in order to become more wise, embodied, and creative. A new ethical motivation springs from the realization of a loving interconnection with all of life." Effortless awareness has been described in the traditional literature as being so close it cannot be seen, so subtle it cannot be understood, and so good it cannot be believed. Loch describes effortless mindfulness as the discovery of an optimal mind, or an open mind, that’s already aware which we can then be aware from. “From this spacious and pervasive awareness, we discover that we’re aware not only of the ability to focus on our breath, but we feel almost as if we’re being breathed, as if our breath is connected to the outer world, the inner world, and we feel as if we’re in this flow or what’s been called ‘in the zone.’” Loch’s work is to help people access awakening as the next natural stage of human development. He has collaborated with neuroscientists at Yale, UPenn, and NYU in the study of how awareness training can enhance compassion and wellbeing. He offers in-person retreats, workshops, and online video and audio courses. Loch has authored three books, including Shift into Freedom: The Science and Practice of Open-Hearted Awareness (2015); Effortless Mindfulness Now: Awakening Our Natural Capacity for Focus, Freedom, and Joy (2017); and The Way of Effortless Mindfulness: A Revolutionary Guide for Living an Awakened Life (2019). His latest book offers a practical guide to experiencing the next stage in the ongoing mindfulness revolution: effortless mindfulness. With guided experiential practices, he writes about how to live with an open heart and peaceful mind and uncover the wise and loving awareness that is within and all around us. Loch graduated from Columbia University where he received a traveling fellowship to study forms of non-dual meditation in Sri Lanka, India and Nepal from 1981-1982, and has studied with teachers from around the world. As a meditation teacher, Loch teaches using an adult-education style based in the earliest non-dual wisdom traditions, modern science, and psychotherapy. Loch has worked in community mental health, established homeless shelters and counseled family members of 9/11. Tibetan teacher Mingyur Rinpoche said, “The only difference between meditation and ordinary social interaction is that the friend you’re gradually coming to know is yourself.” If you’ve ever practiced meditation, you’ll know this to be true.  Conversely, if you’ve never tried meditation, you might be thinking it sounds too difficult or too abstract. I can relate to this, because the first time I tried meditation, I had to suspend disbelief. But this simple practice brought me awareness, consciousness, and ultimately led to my passion for helping others. And I owe it all to today’s guest, Jane Wambui Kaberere. Jane is the most requested guest on the Model Health Show, my biggest inspiration, and she also happens to be my mother-in-law. She is the epitome of overcoming obstacles in order to make a positive impact on others. Her story encompasses all levels of health and wellness, including nutrition, mindfulness, and self-care. Learning from Jane has truly been one of the biggest gifts in my life, and I’m so grateful to be able to share that experience with you today.   In this episode you’ll discover: What Jane’s culture taught her about the role of women.  How Jane’s mother motivated her to strive for more and defy traditional gender roles.  A thought that inspired Jane to uncover real happiness.  The power of asking questions and having the audacity to experiment.  What inspired Jane to pursue an education.  The extents that she went to in order to learn and grow.  How meditation can help you overcome your fears.  Why meditation is like driving a car.  The story behind how meditation led to the creation of the Model Health Show. How meditation can teach you compassion and connection. The different types of mediation that Jane has experimented with. Why Jane loves to teach meditation.  How emotional pain can manifest into physical symptoms.  Jane’s inspiration for learning more about nutrition.  How the naming system works in Kenya.  The power of practicing self-care and self-love.  Why accepting support from those around you can be so powerful.  Items mentioned in this episode include:  Thrivemarket.com/modelhealth ⇐ 25% off your entire 1st order + free shipping! At the age of 36, the Tibetan Buddhist meditation master Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche sneaked out of his monastery in Bodhgaya, India, in the middle of the night to live as a beggar and traveling yogi. The story of how he left behind his privileged lifestyle for a four-year wandering retreat is told in the new book, In Love With the World: A Monk's Journey Through the Bardos of Living and Dying, which he co-wrote with his student and Tricycle’s founding editor, Helen Tworkov. Tworkov sits down with James Shaheen, Tricycle’s publisher and editor, to discuss how she helped Mingyur Rinpoche tell his story, the near-death experience that transformed his life and teachings, and how seeing the small deaths we experience each day can help us alleviate our fears of dying. They also discuss the origins of the magazine and how the Western Buddhist landscape has changed over time.

Listen to this podcast to learn how you can effortlessly begin a simple and sustainable meditation practice without struggling against your busy mind, and without needing to find the time in your busy life.Meditation teachers have historically given new meditators the opposite of what they want. You want a calm mind but you soon become keenly aware of the frantic nature of your mind as you try to learn the strange new practice of meditation. You are already overwhelmed with tasks, appointments, priorities and activites and the meditation teacher gives you yet another thing to do!There is however, fortunately, an easier and softer way. Along with the mental practices and the disciplined training methods learned from Buddhist and Hindu monasteries and temples, we have also imported from the East the brilliant concept of Wu Wei.Wu Wei is a Daoist concept that is usually translated as the ‘action of no action’. Wu Wei is actually the practice of using the forces of the universe, nature and the mind to bring us to where we wish to be, instead of applying the typical Western bull-headed method of trying to bend reality to our will through force and pressure.Using Wu Wei, and having learned a key meditation practice from the great meditation teacher, Mingyur Rinpoche, Robert has developed, and now teaches ‘The Practice of No Practice’. The Practice of No Practice Is an Effortless and Frictionless meditation training method that removes the stress induced by our typical modern goal-oriented and willpower-based approach. The Practice of No Practice is a combination of the Meditation of No Meditation and the Four Tens Meditation taught in a way that overcomes out typical Western black and white approach to learning.Support the show (http://2020meditation.com/coffee)

What is estate planning, really? I know that most lawyers focus on reducing taxes, or the creation of documents, but when you get down to it, what you’re really doing when you make an estate plan is giving everything away, right? So, to me, understanding the practice of generosity and what gets in the way of being generous are central to effective estate planning, and who better to explore that territory than my guest for episode 3 of Life/Death/Law: Myoshin Kelley, an eloquent teacher on the key Buddhist teachings on the wisdom of opening the heart. Myoshin is a Senior Instructor with the Tergar Community, which supports the worldwide vision of Tibetan master meditation teacher and author Mingyur Rinpoche, tergar.org, and it is an honor to have her on the podcast. If you’ve ever been curious about the practice of generosity or the value of it, or found yourself wanting to be generous but somehow holding yourself back, and wondered what was getting in your way, please listen.

If you've ever wondered what it means to wake up, to have a spiritual awakening, or why so many people are doing it around us, then do we have the show for you! Today I'll be talking with Loch Kelly, psychotherapist and meditation expert and the author of Shift Into Freedom: The Science and Practice of Open-Hearted Awareness. Today we'll talk about waking up, what it is, what it means, how we can get there, and how we can tap into it on a daily basis. That plus we'll talk about the thinking channel, I'm no good FM, why where you go, we go, we all go with ego, plus zen and the art of archery, stupid meditation, 90 seconds of anger, and why as Shakespeare says, there are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy. Questions and Topics Include: How to intentionally shift (without needing a cosmic 2x4) How three deaths in a row (and the pain that ensued) helped Loch to shift Why awakening isn't about going off to a cave or a monastery (and you can still have a wife and a cat…named Duffey) How awakening leads you to being more fully human Studying with Adyanshanti, Mingyur Rinpoche and Tsoknyi Rinpoche How he was taught the Sutra Mahamudra (and how that helps us) What is awake awareness? What is ‘stupid meditation'? Do we need years of meditation practice to get to this place? Is there always a calmness inside of us? How this is waking up to your true nature Why we want to become aware of the space between the crickets – and what in the world that means Meditation 101 for awake awareness Who does this compare with mindfulness? What's the difference between heart mindfulness and head mindfulness A practice/meditation on how to unhook from what's creating a perpetual sense of dissatisfaction What happens after 90 seconds of anger? What are the ‘dangers' of mindfulness, or the mindfulness ‘detox' What is a Charlie Brown ‘Good Grief' period? What is a Dog Zen? To find his book lochkelly.org (plus events, online courses and book) and the audio, not of him reading the book, but an audio of the 31 glimpse practices, from 3-8 minutes long, guided, in a series of short practices – get the essence of the book and experience it directly. A third guided meditation to help you gain awake awareness. Loch Kelly shows how to instantly  access bliss, calmness and inner peace through simple techniques you can do anywhere, rather than years of meditation! Plus 3 Guided Meditations! Mingyur Rinpoche, the author of "The Joy of Living: Unlocking the Secret and Science of Happiness," is a study of contradictions. On one hand, he's been formally recognized as the reincarnation of two Tibetan meditation masters. On the other hand, he has been working with scientists to design research around the impact meditation can have on the brain. In fact, he and other practitioners had their brain activity measured while meditating on compassion and the researchers were stunned by the results. Mingyur also freely admits that he suffered from anxiety and panic attacks as a child, and talks about how he turned to meditation for help.
