Traditional Tibetan medicine, known as Sowa Rigpa is one of the most ancient sciences being used for thousands of years. On the one hand, it relies on indigenous Himalayan knowledge and on the other hand, it includes a systematic syncretism that allows it to interact with all other medical traditions, even with modern day science. As health affects us all, it's good to have some understanding of how to preserve balance and how to manage a disorder when it arises, and to be able to restore good health. In this talk we speak with Katy Otero who is a practitioner of Traditional Tibetan Medicine who studies with Dr Nida Chenagtsang in Europe. Hosted on Acast. This week's show is with the amazing Erik Jampa Andersson. Erik Jampa Andersson is the founder and director of Shrimala, an author, a London-based practitioner, teacher, and scholar of Tibetan Medicine (Sowa Rigpa), Tibetan Buddhism, and Environmental History. He is a graduate of the Shang Shung Institute School of Tibetan Medicine, and recently completed his MA in History at Goldsmiths University, where his research focused on the historical intersection of ecology, health, and mythology in a more-than-human world. He is the author of Unseen Beings: How We Forgot the World is More Than Human (Hay House, May 2023). In this conversation, Erik and Lian explored the hierarchical way humans relate to non-humans (especially in relation to people getting into Shamanism or Jungian approaches). Erik shared his journey through Tibetan Buddhism and into a more immanent approach. They explored the significance of storytelling and fantasy in reclaiming enchantment and fostering a more animistic worldview, emphasising the importance of recognising the personhood of non-human beings and the need to break free from an anthropocentric worldview. They both spoke of the recognition of animism as a foundational way of experiencing the world and the importance of preserving unbroken animistic traditions. I'd love to know what YOU think about this week's show. Let's carry on the conversation… please leave a comment below. What you'll learn from this episode: Recognise the personhood of non-human beings and embrace the relational experience of enchantment, developing an animistic worldview that acknowledges the diversity and continuity of beingness. Engage in storytelling and fantasy to reclaim enchantment and challenge our conditioned anthropocetric worldview. Preserve and learn from unbroken animistic traditions while being cautious of cultural erasure. Learn from wisdom holders and engage with their knowledge with gratitude and humility, whilst approaching traditional systems with pragmatism and nuance, adapting them to your own life and circumstances rather than taking them on in a way that doesn't take into account the change in context. Focus on building meaningful relationships with others, including non-human beings - this is something we focus on in an upcoming episode Resources and stuff that we spoke about: Visit Erik's Website: shrimala.com erikjampa.com Be Mythical is soon opening the doors to our new academy of alchemical arts - UNIO: The Academy of Sacred Union... We both share a ton of Naga stories and experiences from the one Prashant Iyengar shared with about Patanjali to how the Nagas became guardians of the Chod founder's tradition and many more. Plus there's a bonus episode right after this one on the importance of ritual and we dive much deeper into mantras are spells. Multi-faceted, Dr. Duffy guides doctors in returning the healer to their work. He currently focuses on working with individuals (including healthcare professionals) to remediate burnout. He transformed the Institute of Spirituality & Health in Texas – to foster the powerful connection between spirituality and health. He is a student of Tibetan Buddhism and speaks regularly about healing as contemplative practice – a unique opportunity to serve others while expanding one's own heart. In this interview, Dr. Duffy touches upon:The issue of burnout and how it impacts physicians and other medical professionals; how burnout is impacting our collective consciousness. The significance of Christine Longaker's book, Facing Death and Finding Hope: A Guide to the Emotional and Spiritual Care of the Dying. The significance of Kirsten DeLeo's book, Being Present through the End. Kirsten helped to pioneer Authentic Presence, one of the first contemplative-based programs in end-of-life care in the United States. The impact of the Dalai Lama's response to the question of what constituted the essence of Tibetan Medicine: "To have a good heart," accelerated his professional work and commitment to align with the authentic heart of compassion. How contemplative practice opens us to the realization that "People do not have ideas, ideas have people," a quote by Carl Jung. It is challenging to wake up to the truth of this and not fall victim to an idea that does not uphold how we aspire to live our lives. The book he is currently writing tentatively titled: "The Practice: The Contemplative Heart of Healing." How the pervasiveness of burnout in our culture is surfacing as "the inner climate crisis." That the healer's job is to identify the shadow of our community and find ways to transcend it through contemplative practice and action. The first session is titled Asana is like the physical asanas in yoga practice, clarity and specificity result from intention. When faced with a choice, intention should be the starting point -- if choices and actions are aligned with intention, everything falls into place. How modern cultures regularly farm out entropy (including the sick and dying) and indigenous thinking can encourage more holistic and compassionate paradigms. See book by Tyson Yunkaporta titled Sand Talk: How Indigenous Thinking Can Save the World. His talk on the regenerative mind and its connection to other regenerative mediums: regenerative agriculture, regenerative economies. How Chinese Medicine nourishes the inner in light of the outer. Books by Lonny Jarrett including Nourishing Destiny: The Inner Tradition of Chinese Medicine. And his website: nourishingdestiny.com -- encouraging healers to awaken the living heart of medicine.

Join me as I interview prolific writer and healer, Robert Sachs, who encourages us to awaken our hearts in these troubled times -- not by sticking our heads in the proverbial sand, but by cultivating and practicing being awake in our own lives. Today we explore the concepts raised in his book - PERFECT ENDINGS: A CONSCIOUS APPROACH TO DYING AND DEATH. Born in the U.S., Robert moved to England while a teenager and embarked on the study of Eastern Philosophy. There, he received a degree in Comparative Religion and Sociology and began his study with Tibetan Buddhist Masters and renowned teachers of the healing arts, Macrobiotics Master Michio Kushi and Shiatsu Master Rex Lassalle. Desirous of furthering his studies in mental health and bodywork, he attended the Central Ohio School of Massage and earned a Master's degree in Social Work from the University of Kentucky. Deeply affected by his daughter's death during this time, Robert began to study the conscious dying practices of Tibetan Buddhism. He is a member of Sogyal Rinpoche's Spiritual Dying Network and the National Hospice Organization. Along with his wife, Melanie, Robert has pursued studies in both Indian and Tibetan Ayurveda. Recognized by renown teacher Dr. Deepak Chopra and other physicians of both Eastern and Western orientation, their writings are considered to be some of the clearest and most usable texts available. With an educational background and training that is as conventional as it is alternative, Robert has worked with physicians, clinics, hospitals, private individuals and organizations, teaching them how to integrate contemporary scientific approaches with the ancient wisdom traditions in the areas of stress management, preventive health care, end-of-life care, and relationship and group dynamics. He has served as an instructor for the Chopra Center for Well Being in San Diego and the Tibetan Medicine for the Sino-American Rehabilitation Association College in Los Angeles. In this episode of the Wisdom Keeper podcast I'm delighted to be joined by scholar and Tibetan medical practioner Erik Jampa Anderson who takes us on a magical journey into the realms of synchronicity, mythology, and animism. Eric pulls back the curtain on his upcoming book Unseen Beings where he traces the root cause of the break down of our civilization to the prevalence of anthropocentrism. Are human beings really at the center of it all, seemingly in control of a mechanistic world? Are we suffering the loss of enchantment? While people's movement across the planet strive for greater equity and inclusivity, Erik makes a bolder leap forward to suggest that our expanding consciousness must begin to include the rights of plants, spirits, and the earth herself. This conversation proposes an inspiring innovation that combines spiritual practice and activism. Erik Jampa Andersson, founder and director of Shrimala, is a scholar practitioner of Sowa Rigpa, colloquially known as Tibetan Medicine, based in London. He is a graduate of the Shang Shung Institute of Tibetan Medicine, and one of a rare and distinguished members of a small cohort of Westerners who has studied the four classical medical tantras. His first book, Unseen Beings, is due to be released by Hay House publications in Spring 2023. A Buddhist practitioner since 2005 (at the age of 14), Erik found an early home in the Tibetan tradition under the close guidance of Lama Tsultrim Allione, founder of Tara Mandala retreat center in Colorado, and numerous teachers from Tibet and Bhutan. While pursuing a degree in religious studies at Naropa University, he was inspired to change course and enroll in a five-year Tibetan Medicine program at the Shang Shung Institute, in which he was trained extensively under notable senior physicians including Dr. Phuntsog Wangmo, Dr. Namgyal Tsering, Dr. Nyima Tsering, and other Sowa Rigpa experts in America and Asia. His Website is: https://www.shrimala.com/ Erik and I discuss: • The murder of Erik's brother that brought on an existential crisis in early childhood • How J.R.R. Tolkien opened up a portal into the mythological dimension of life • The loss, purpose, benefits, and necessity of a mythology perspective • Magic in Tibetan Buddhism, and his synchronistic encounter with Lama Tsultrim Allione • Do demons and spirits exist or are they merely psychological archetypes? • The Tibetan Buddhist ritual practice of Chöd or Feeding Your Demons. • The global and personal consequences of our anthropocentric paradigm • The history and power of animism, and how to relate to unseen beings. • Working with racism, patriarchy, and anthropocentrisim. • Global healing through inclusivity with unseen beings including plants, animals, and the spirit world. • Root cause of the ecological crisis and the possibility of transformation. **** The Wisdom Keeper Podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts and Spotify CONTEMPLATIVE STUDIES PROGRAM Courses, Community and Buddhist Pilgrimage https://www.gradualpath.com/ 25% off all courses with coupon code WISDOMKEEPER More about Dr. Miles Neale on his website https://www.milesneale.com/ Follow Miles Neale on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/milesneale/

In today's episode, we will explore the rich and fascinating world of Sowa Rigpa, the Tibetan Science of Healing, and discover some of the ways that traditional medicine can help to revolutionise our approaches to health, personal and social wellness, and environmentalism. For years, scientists have been warning of an impending rise in zoonotic infections like Covid-19. A perfect storm of deforestation, global warming, widespread inequality, and disrespect for the ‘sensitive' regions of the planet have forced us into a new and frightening era of uncertainty. But beyond tackling this singular epidemiological eruption, how can we truly heal on a deeper level?800 years ago, the renowned yogi-physician Yuthok Yönten Gönpo composed a collection of texts that would come to represent the basis for all Tibetan medicine, seamlessly integrating cutting-edge Indian, Chinese, and Greco-Arabic medical developments with indigenous healing knowledge. Of particular interest is Tibetan Medicine's unique theory of ‘provocation' (Tib. gDon). Rooted in a deep and sophisticated indigenous understanding of the energies of the natural world, Tibetan scientists like Yuthok concluded that infectious diseases arise in part due to an imbalanced relationship with the natural world. We will also explore Tibetan perceptions of rLung (‘wind'), a highly sophisticated and fascinating framework for conceptualising mind-body interactions, along with a simple traditional method for soothing excess rLung on your own. Together, these two concepts – rLung and gDon – illustrate two of the many ways that traditional medicine can help us to unite disparate fields of science, health, and philosophy to enter into a new age of revolutionary wellness. This episode was recorded during 'Healing the Body, Healing the Mind', a weekend of workshops and talks organised by Science & Wisdom LIVE in collaboration with Jamyang London Buddhist Centre and Land of Medicine Buddha.About Erik Jampa AnderssonErik Jampa Andersson, director and founder of Shrīmālā, is a Sowa Rigpa practitioner, SKI teacher, and meditation instructor with students and clients across the world. Erik is one of the few westerners to have completed a comprehensive education in the Gyu-Zhi (Four Tantras of Tibetan Medicine) as well as clinical training in Tibetan herbalism, dietetics, and manual therapies.A Buddhist practitioner since age 14, Erik found an early home in the Tibetan tradition under the close guidance of Lama Tsultrim Allione, Tulku Sang-Ngag Rinpoche, and Khenpo Urgyen Wangchuk. After a stint in Tibetan Studies and Eastern Medicine at Naropa University, he completed the Shang Shung Institute's Traditional Tibetan Medicine program between 2012-2017 and trained extensively under notable senior Amchis such as Dr. Phuntsog Wangmo, Dr. Namgyal Tsering, Dr. Nyima Tsering, and other Sowa Rigpa physicians in America and Asia.
Led by author and mentor Dr. Nida, Robert A.F. Thurman journeys though the Medicine Buddha's garden, exploring the tools, techniques and transformative technologies of Sowa Rigpa (Traditional Tibetan Science of Healing) as found in Mandalas, Buddhist Thangka iconography, and in the The Blue Beryl paintings. Recorded during the annual Tibet House US | Menla New Year's gathering, this episode is an extended teaching on Tanaduk-the Medicine Buddha's Pure Land and the symbolism of Buddhist healing sciences intended for those of any background or tradition. Opening with a short introduction to "The Four Tantras" the root text used by Traditional Tibetan Medical colleges, this episode includes: introductions to Mandala practice and creation, to Buddhist Sutras and Tantras and in-depth discussions of the specific imagery found within The Blue Beryl. Used as a memorization tools, The Blue Beryl: Atlas of Tibetan Medicine paintings were commissioned by the 5th Dalai Lama‘s Spiritual son Ghamtso Gyatso (1645-1705), and illustrate the physical symptoms, disease, treatment, medicinal herbs & plants used by Tibetan doctors.
