This podcast episode is a fascinating conversation with Scott Odom, about what happens when we start to see the world through a lens of “basic goodness.” Scott is a retired police officer, dedicated Buddhist practitioner, and former nomad who spent four years traveling the country in an airstream. We talk about practice, the process of transformation, and integrating the many roles we play in life. In this conversation, you'll hear about Scott's experiences working as a police officer, and what he learned from that work – both the positives and negatives. He describes how police work was empowering, but also draining, and that it eventually led him to seek a spiritual path in order to cope with the trauma he was immersed in every day. In Buddhism, the concept of basic goodness is the idea that all beings have an essential nature that is benevolent, open, and clear. Thus, all beings are worthy of compassion and have the potential of waking up to this true nature. Once he began his practice, Scott had the experience of going back on patrol with this radically new perspective and the ability to be fully present with people in all sorts of intense situations. This helped him move away from survival mode thinking, where he tended to view people as either a threat to deal with, or neutral and irrelevant. We also talked about his relationship with the devotional aspects of Tibetan Buddhism, including chanting, bowing, and deity visualizations. And, we discussed the embodied movement aspects of the Ngondro practice, and what he gained from completing thousands of prostrations (somewhat similar to a Sun Salutation) in the early years of his journey. And, of course I asked Scott about his 4+ years leading a nomadic life in an airstream, after he retired from police work. He shares what it was like to be on a sort of traveling Dharma retreat in the “airstream of consciousness.” I hope you'll enjoy listening to this wide-ranging conversation and come away inspired to follow your own path of wisdom, heart, and insight – however that might look! -- Guest Bio: Scott Odom is a Dharma practitioner in the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. He is a retired police officer and lives in the desert on the outskirts of Palm Springs, California, with his wife and two dogs. His spiritual path has included working with Ayahuasca in the Santo Daime church and exploring the Santeria/Espiritismo tradition. Charlie Morley is a bestselling author and teacher of lucid dreaming, shadow integration and Mindfulness of Dream & Sleep. Since early childhood, Charlie has been fascinated by lucid dreaming. His interest in Buddhism was piqued after reading “The Art of Happiness” by the Dalai Lama on a long flight when he was just 16, and just a few years later he took refuge in Karma Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. After being instructed in the Buddhist practice of lucid dreaming by Lama Yeshe Rimpoche, he began giving workshops and teaching widely. In this interview, Charlie discusses in depth the encounters he's had with the most difficult person in his life - himself! In a lucid dream, he explains, you literally meet personified versions of your own psychological states. The negative (wounded, suffering) aspects are known as your shadow self. The lucid dreaming practice he teaches takes the view that meeting these so-called ‘demons' offers you the opportunity of transforming them - for turning them into helpers or angels (i.e. troublesome buddhas). Charlie describes that when we recognise that, within a dream, all is pure potentiality and empty of inherent existence, all fear dissolves. We can then learn to face our deepest pain demons in the dream state and come to terms with them, hug them - and eventually let ourselves be eaten by them… This lays down the neural pathways that help us do that in waking life - to deal with the troublesome buddhas of our daily life.Support the showThis podcast is sponsored by Zen Minded – an online lifestyle store offering you the very best of Japanese craft, incense & other Zen-inspired home-goods. We had a fun, informative and inspiring conversation with the renowned, Dr. Richard Horowitz, MD who is a board-certified internist with 30+ years of experience treating over 13,000 patients for Lyme and associated tick borne disorders. He is the author of 2 national best-selling books on Lyme disease (Why Can't I Get Better? St Martin's Press, 2013, NY Times Best Seller; How Can I Get Better? St Martin's Press, 2017, National Bestseller.) He joined us to chat about his newly released novel, Starseed R/evolution: The Awakening, with an urgent warning of the impending climate crisis our planet faces, including real-world scientific and cultural solutions. He has worked during the past several years with Health and Human Services (HHS), the agency of the Federal government tasked with protecting the health and wellbeing of all Americans. Dr Horowitz has also worked on finding solutions for COVID-19 and has published several scientific articles in the medical literature on the diagnosis and treatment that are undergoing randomized, clinical trials at major universities. Dr. Horowitz is a citizen scientist has been carefully following the science on climate change during the past several years. The conclusion he and other government scientists have reached after carefully reviewing the scientific literature is that humanity has approximately an 8-10 year window to reverse the present course of carbon pollution before we reach a tipping point of no return, resulting in irreparable damage to our ecosystems and way of life. The health, economic and social devastation of unchecked climate change is rapidly approaching and if no immediate action is taken, according to scientists from across the globe who have examined the data, is that future generations will be experiencing what has been described as nothing less than the 6th extinction. A radical destruction of life as we know it, where a significant portion of plant, animal, insect, and human life will become extinct. We have experienced 5 prior extinctions in human history, but this is the only one that will be a direct result of human greed and ignorance. An anthropomorphic climate disaster. The pain, suffering and loss will be devastating for each and every person and family across the planet. This is the future humanity is running towards. Dr Horowitz has studied during the past 40 years with Tibetan Buddhist masters of the Karma Kagyu lineage, having received over 200 initiations and teachings into the nature of mind and existence. He has taken vows of the bodhisattva to relieve the suffering of others and he join us to help spread the word and ask you listeners to be a part of his mission. From Sakyong Mipham, leader of Shambhala, one of the largest Buddhist organizations in the West, to the Karmapa Lama, head of the Karma Kagyu lineage, powerful Buddhist teachers seem not to pay attention to the teachings of the Buddha himself for monastics: No Sex! None of these so-called enlightened teachers, even well-known American yogis like Lama Surya Das, seem to be able to practice the wisdom and compassion of non-harmful, appropriate student/teacher boundaries. As more and more Buddhist and ex-Buddhist women come forward with their stories of sexual abuse, it is obvious that Buddhism, especially the Vajrayana, has a problem. In this episode I talk with Carol Merchasin, a lawyer and sexual abuse investigator, who speaks candidly about her experiences in investigating and helping to prosecute prominent teachers of the Buddhist community. Carol discusses her participation with the Buddhist Sunshine Project, suggests changes that can be made to make practice spaces safer and offers her advice for survivors wanting to heal from guru abuse.
To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Parinirvana of His Holiness Rangjung Rigpe Dorje the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa, I decided to do the first Modern Meditation Master Monday profile on this King of Kings, the NIrmanakaya emanation of Chenrezig, the Buddha of Compassion, head of the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. He was called the Miraculous 16th because of his tremendous and seemingly effortless spiritual power that he playfully and majestically transformed millions of lives with. He was a Buddha in the flesh and this was clearly evident to those who entered his mandala. Karmapa Khyenno! Karmapa Khyenno! Karmapa Khyenno!Buddhaversepodcast.com

Una and her mother move into a big house on Mapleton Hill with Ann and her two kids. Just in time, too, as it's becoming increasingly difficult for her to reconcile the Buddhist world and the outside world.Una is invited to Kalapa Court, Trungpa Rinpoche's home, for High Tea. There's no saying what will happen to her once she walks through his front door, she may not come out the same little girl as she went in.
His Holiness, the sixteenth Gyalwa Karmapa, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje (August 14, 1924 – November 5, 1981) was the spiritual leader of the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism and part of the oldest line of reincarnate lamas in Vajrayana Buddhism known as the Karmapas whose coming was predicted by the Buddha in the Samadhiraja Sutra. The 16th Karmapa was considered to be a "living Buddha" and was deeply involved in the transmission of the Vajrayana Buddhism to Europe and North America following the Chinese invasion of Tibet. He had many monikers, including “King of the Yogis”. Music: Time for Peace - One -Part 2 - www.timeforpeace.bandcamp.com. “Awareness is like the sky, and panic is like the clouds. The sky is free, and the clouds cannot change the nature of the sky.” Episode Summary: Mingyur Rinpoche, an esteemed Tibetan teacher, master of the Karma Kagyu and Nyingma lineages of Tibetan Buddhism, joins us to share his ancient wisdom of Tibet, in a fresh and practical way. He will give us steps to transform suffering into something positive and worthy, and action steps to take during this challenging time, such as focusing on loving, serving, reflecting, and making impactful changes for your future. Some Questions That I Ask: How do you use ‘panic' as a support for your meditation? Is suffering necessary? Is there another way for us to evolve and grow without having to suffer? How can we be vigilant in not getting attached to our egos? How can you guide us to make peace with the inevitability of death, so we can live freely and in peace? How much of our life is predestined? And how much are we really in control of our lives? In This Episode You Will Learn: The keys to overcome suffering and your mind. The best moment to transform yourself, for real. The definition of what this pandemic is bringing to us as a whole. How to connect with your true fundamental nature more deeply and profoundly. A healthy way to redirect the feeling of panic and use it as a benefit to your evolution.

Welcome! My guest today is Jo De Rosa. Jo shares how she battled addiction for decades until yoga and meditation literally saved her life. She has recently celebrated 1000 days of sobriety! She has lived in Thailand and the UK, running a clothing and jewellery shop, a yoga studio, and a retreat centre. Her business, Inner Guidance, offers coaching, workshops, and retreats focusing on emotional and spiritual healing, nutrition, and visioning for the future.Join me for an inspiring conversation with Jo! Jo candidly shares about the excesses of her adult life, until yoga and meditation showed her a better path. Even in the midst of the addiction pattern, she felt a calling to search for something else for her life. When she attended her first yoga class, it was an “epiphany” moment—exactly what she was searching for to change her life forever! In this episode, Jo discusses: How yoga eventually led to soul-satisfying meditation in her life, and how you can start small and incorporate this practice into your life How she overcame the power struggle between the “old Jo” and the “new Jo” she wanted to become How family and friends responded to the extreme changes she made in her life—some were supportive and some were not Jo keeps the faith in herself by acknowledging that her inner peace comes from her meditation Hear the miraculous story of how Jo and her husband came to own a 16th-century property that has become the Inner Guidance Retreat Centre How Jo does NOT regret any of her life experiences: “I had to go through what I did to be where I am right now!” Biggest Learning: Trust.Trusting herself, trusting the process. Trusting that everything is happening for a reason. It has to happen this way for you to be your full potential, so that you can shine in the world. Say YES and mean it. Do things because you say 'YES' to them, not because you 'should' do them. Favourite Quote: “Be the change you want to see in the world.” Mahatma Gandhi Theme Song: Brainwave Music System- Dr Jeffrey Thompson SuperShero Name: The Quantum Mind-Setter About Jo: Jo offers coaching, workshops and retreats where students can fully immerse themselves into their practice, and most importantly, learn how to take the information home with them and integrate it into their daily lives. Yoga is a complete lifestyle and Jo teaches not only the physical postures, but also nutrition, visioning for the future and meditation. This enables you to feel balanced mentally and emotionally, as well as physically. Jo teaches yoga in the Iyengar style and spent one year in training with her first teacher Suzie in Koh Samui, Thailand. Jo has spent much time in India and completed the Sivananda one month intensive training in Neyyer Dam, Trivandrum. Here she stayed in the ashram for one month living and breathing yoga before heading from the southern tip of India to the Himalayas where she met and studied with Sharat Arora. It was at this time that Jo also became involved with the Tibetan Buddhist movement in Dharamsala. In 2006 Jo took refuge with HH Karmapa which is a great honour, and was given the Tibetan name ‘Karma Choekyi’, which means ‘happy teacher’. The Karmapa is head of the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism, and although this is a different lineage to HH Dalai Lama, it is now public knowledge that HH Karmapa will succeed HH Dalai Lama as leader of Tibet. Lama Karma (Justin Wall) graduated from Columbia University with degrees in Religious Studies and Literature and has been practicing Buddhism for over 12 years. He completed two traditional three-year retreats under the direction of Lama Norlha Rinpoche at Kagyu Thubten Choling Monastery in New York, studying and practicing in the Karma Kagyu, Shangpa Kagyu and Nyingma Traditions of Tibetan Buddhism. In this talk from the 2014 Buddhist Geeks Conference, Lama Karma describes the gap between the modern mindfulness movement and the Mahamudra tradition. He argues that the presentation of secular mindfulness teachings without the context of Buddhist tradition can lead practitioners to mistakes resulting in harmful dualistic perception. He then presents a framework in which these mistakes of secular mindfulness can be addressed through the Mahamudra teachings. Episode Links: Milarepa Dzong Retreat Center ( http://www.mocd.org )
In this episode we speak with Karma Kagyu teacher, Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche. He starts off by telling us about how he got into formal Buddhist practice, at the tender age of 9. He also shares some of his initial challenges with anxiety, and how he was able to work with it on his first 3-year retreat. Rinpoche also shares some suggestions for meditators who are fairly new to the path, suggesting that they focus on 1) Wisdom & 2) Method. In addition to that he speaks about what makes a good teacher and whether or not it is vital to practice in a particular lineage. We finish our interview with Rinpoche discussing the importance of Joy on the Buddhist path, and of what he calls “Boundless Joy.” Tying in with that he shares what it was like participating in the meditative research conducted by Dr. Richard Davidson, and what the results of that study were. Erik Curren is a business leader, community activist, author, Buddhist meditator, and politician—who is running for state legislature in Virginia during the 2010 election period. We were contacted by Erik’s campaign manager, who told us that Erik’s Buddhist background was causing a backlash of religious intolerance from some camps, including his fellow Democrats. We spoke with Erik about the importance of religious freedom in American politics, as well as about the way that the Bodhisattva ideal impacts his work as a politician. Finally, we speak with Erik about his first book, Buddha’s Not Smiling, which explored some of the issues behind the current controversy between the two young men who both claim to be reincarnations of the 16th Karmapa–the spiritual head of the Karma Kagyu school. It turns out that there is corruption and misunderstanding in Tibetan politics, just as there are in American politics.
