After the last episode's babble, I dig into what it really means to "find your voice" as a filmmaker—especially in the commercial world. It isn't just a visual style, but the combination of your reel and your reputation: the work you put out plus what it's like to work with you. I talk about the balance of ego and humility on set, and explain why repeat business is the magic fourth "R" that grows out of relationships and a strong, consistent voice. Let me intro you to concepts like ikigai and dharma, reframing success as the intersection of what you love, what the world needs, what you can be paid for, and what you're truly meant to do. I share how original content and dream projects—like my Moink documentary—help reveal and refine your voice across different "boxes" (comedy, kids spots, docs) while staying true to who you are. And I give details on my intimate Joshua Tree Filmmaker Retreat, where a small group of working directors and I dive deeper into these ideas together. Just me talking about staying tool agnostic as a commercial director—moving between live-action, CG, and AI without losing my point of view. I share recent job stories, how I'm using my Filmmaker Retreat Joshua Tree and Posh Duo promos as testing grounds for new tools, and why I still put actors, crew, agency team - you know - collaboration above whatever camera, crane or software is hot this week. Storytelling with the talking pictures, that's the fun. FILMMAKER RETREAT JOSHUA TREE '26 - JOIN US Oct. 1–4: our 5th Annual Retreat. SIGN UP NOW No application. Gary Knight is a legendary commercial editor and partner at Cut+Run whose work spans iconic spots for brands like Adidas, American Express, and Chase. In this episode, Gary traces his journey from rubber-numbering film cans as a teenage runner in Soho to becoming a sought-after storyteller in the edit bay. We dig into the craft of editing—taste vs. tools, why watching all the footage still matters, how to find the right tone and tempo, and the power of happy accidents. Gary shares candid stories about collaborating with directors like Gus Van Sant, shaping music-driven montages, handling shrinking timelines and "too many notes," and why true respect for the process starts with trust, curiosity, and a love of the work. This week is incredibly special. My wife Melanie and I are celebrating 25 years of marriage. WOW! Twenty-five years since February 17, 2001… and 28 years since I first walked into that graduate teaching assistant meeting at San Diego State University and saw the most beautiful blonde woman with the brightest smile in the room. Little did I know…that woman would become my wife. In this episode, we take you live to Whitefish, Montana, from our Annual Retreat, where Kelli Watson interviews Melanie and me on stage about marriage, faith, parenting, business, hard seasons, deep loss, big dreams, and what it really takes to stay committed for the long haul. I'd like to share part of that interview with you as we received great feedback on it. This one is vulnerable. We talk about the wins, some losses, some wounds, and even some of the arguments. Haha. We talk about relationships, growth, the kids, the calling, and how love looks different 25 years later. If you're married, want to be married, leading a family, building a business, or walking through a tough season—this episode is for you. Check it out… What You'll Learn in This Episode: How our definition of love evolved from "what can I get?" to "how can I serve?" The best marriage advice we ever received. How to navigate tough seasons with a short memory and thick skin. What raising three athletes taught us about teamwork at home. How faith became the foundation that carried us through tragedy. Why second chances and redemption stories matter so deeply to us. The power of walks, car rides, and intentional conversation in staying connected. How to balance personal ambition with shared family goals. What it means to "divide and conquer" in certain seasons of life. Why your spouse's spirit matters more over time than physical attraction. The conversations that shaped us as young parents—and the ones shaping us now. What legacy truly means and how we want to be remembered. What do the next 25-years look like?! Haha. Here are Some of the Interview Questions from Kelli Watson: Todd & Melanie Durkin – 25 Years of Marriage Looking back on 25 years together, what's one thing that has surprised you most about marriage? Every couple goes through seasons—busy, calm, and sometimes stormy. What practices or habits have helped you stay connected through the different seasons of life? You've both supported each other through major career milestones and raising a family. How have you balanced personal dreams with shared goals? What does partnership mean to you now, compared to when you first got married? How do you handle disagreements or tough conversations? Over the years, what small, consistent actions have had the biggest impact on keeping your relationship strong? You've both spoken about faith and purpose. How has your faith influenced your marriage and the way you lead as a couple? If your younger selves could sit in the audience today, what advice would you give them about love, communication, and commitment? How has your definition of love changed from year one to year twenty-five? And finally, what's next for the two of you--as a couple, as parents, and as partners in life and impact? We've done a lot in 25-years. We walked through tragedy. We've built businesses. We've raisedthree incredible kids. We've sold a company. We're launching another. We've grown in faith. We've wrestled through conflict. And we've learned that love deepens when you serve, not when you keep score. I have fallen more in love with Melanie's spirit today than I did even 25 years ago. Her faith. Her discipline. Her heart for serving others through the Durkin Impact Foundation. Her mothering our 3-kids. I'm more convinced than ever that when your marriage is rooted in faith, purpose, love, and understanding, and good communication, it can weather anything. If this episode touched you, challenged you, or encouraged you—please like it, share it, and follow the show. Send it to someone who needs hope in their marriage or encouragement in their family. Entrepreneur Thaddeus Galas' Secrets on Health & WealthTheirs a Doctor in the house and his name is Dr. Thaddeus Gala. Thaddeus is an entrepreneurs' entrepreneur. He owns and runs several Companies. Every year Thaddeus hosts the Guardians Annual Retreat, bringing together 500 entrepreneurs, leaders, and philanthropists for a weekend of inspiration. The event features headliners like Gary Vaynerchuk, Natasha Graziano and a host of other A list Speakers. Tickets are always sell out almost as soon as they become available.Unconventional childhood and Unconventional EntrepreneurDr. Gala's parents were one of a kind. His father was a Vietnam War veteran, while his mother was a grade school teacher. They fell in love instantly when they met. Within weeks, they picked up their lives and moved to the forests of Oregon.Dr. Gala spent his formative years surrounded by nature in a rustic household. He had chickens as pets. Exercise involved cutting firewood. And winters meant finding new ways to unfreeze the pipes. Growing up, Dr. Gala always felt like the forest offered unique problems, which required equally unique solutions. Learning how to solve problems on his own led to the development of Thaddeus' entrepreneurial spirit. The Road Less TravelledDr. Gala's first foray into business involved medicine. When his mother became ill with a life-threatening condition, he came face-to-face with the limitations of the current healthcare system. Thaddeus founded Complete Care, a multi-specialty clinic that advocated natural methods for pain and chronic disease. Today, Complete Care is responsible for over 50,000 patient visits a year. Last year, Dr. Gala's mom celebrated her 75th birthday by running a marathon. Like other great entrepreneurs, Dr. Gala is a master of the road less travelled. He has since ventured into taxation prevention and mentorship and boasts immense success in both. While he fell into both fields by accident, the entrepreneur in him recognized the opportunity, which allowed him to pursue it. This is one of the traits that separates great entrepreneurs from other businessmen.Guardian's Advice 1, 2 and 3First, opportunities are many times disguised as problems. When an average entrepreneur finds themself at a fork in the road, they may see that as a negative. But when a great entrepreneur finds themself at a crossroad, they look for the value of the options ahead. Reframing problems as opportunities may mean the difference between another bad day at the office and a groundbreaking idea.Second, gratitude results in a never-empty cup. Each day, Dr. Gala makes time to list down three things for whihc he's thankful. He leaves these lists around his house, so that he is constantly reminded of the many blessings in his life. He firmly believes that this practice helps him become more present. It elevates his mood, which also improves the energy of those working with and for him.And third, environment is the single best driver of behavior. If you surround yourself with the right people, you set yourself up for success. The Guardian Annual Retreat works on this premise. Every year, over 500 like-minded individuals gather in Puerto Rico to discuss health, wealth, and impact. The Guardian Annual Retreat is responsible for the growth of hundreds of great entrepreneurs all over the world.provenadjectivedemonstrated by evidence or argument to be true or existing."a proven ability to work hard"(of a new method, system, or treatment) tried and tested.en·tre·pre·neurnouna person who organizes and operates a business or businesses, taking on greater than normal financial risks in order to do so.The Proven Entrepreneur - Success Stories share real stories from real entrepreneurs about how they got where they are.https://provenentrepreneurshow.comhttps://donwilliamsglobal.com
