This week to celebrate Father's Day we have a look at the 1967 film SON OF GODZILLA. This is Episode #373!Son of Godzilla (怪獣島の決戦 ゴジラの息子, Kaijū Shima no Kessen: Gojira no Musuko, lit. Monster Island's Decisive Battle: Godzilla's Son) is a 1967 Japanese kaiju film directed by Jun Fukuda, with special effects by Sadamasa Arikawa, under the supervision of Eiji Tsuburaya. Produced and distributed by Toho Co., Ltd, it is the eighth film in the Godzilla franchise. It stars Tadao Takashima, Akira Kubo, Akihiko Hirata, and Beverly Maeda, with Hiroshi Sekita, Seiji Onaka, and Haruo Nakajima as Godzilla, and Marchan the Dwarf as Minilla.Son of Godzilla received a theatrical release in Japan on December 16, 1967, and was released directly to television in the United States in 1969 through the Walter Reade Organization.
March of the Monsters month at Catching Up On Cinema continues with a review of Ishiro Honda's groundbreaking daikaiju masterpiece, Gojira (1954)! A grim, allegorical tale of the horrors of nuclear weapons from a uniquely Japanese perspective, the film is often mistakenly thought of as just another dime a dozen atomic age B-movie, largely due to it's slightly inferior repackaging in the form of the recut, Godzilla, King of the Monsters (1956). Stunningly photographed, and ably acted, the film is nevertheless an astounding piece of sci-fi horror that still packs a punch when digested with proper historical context. Directed by Ishiro Honda, produced by Tomoyuki Tanaka, with effects by Eiji Tsuburaya, musical score by Akira Ifukube, and Haruo Nakajima donning the 220 lbs Godzilla suit, the film represents the film assemblage of what could easily be considered the "Dream Team" of tokusatsu craftsmen.
Jim and Mark kick off 2021 with a look at a 1967 Kaiju Classic from Ishiro Honda, "King Kong Escapes," starring Rhoades Reason, Linda Jo Miller, Akira Takarada, Mie Hama, Hideyo Amamoto and Haruo Nakajima. A evil scientist wanting to take over the world kidnaps Kong when his giant Kong robot is unable to dig for Element X. The U.N. gets involved and the action begins. Join us for our first episode of the year on "Monster Attack!"

This is big monster Spoilers! ******************** King Kong vs. Godzilla (キングコング対ゴジラ Kingu Kongu tai Gojira) is a 1962 Japanese kaiju film directed by Ishirō Honda, with special effects by Eiji Tsuburaya. Produced and distributed by Toho Studios, it is the third film in the Godzilla franchise, and the first of two Toho-produced films featuring King Kong. It is also the first time that both characters appeared on film in color and widescreen. The film stars Tadao Takashima, Kenji Sahara, Yū Fujiki, Ichirō Arishima, and Mie Hama, with Shoichi Hirose as King Kong and Haruo Nakajima as Godzilla. In the film, as Godzilla is reawakened by an American submarine, a pharmaceutical company captures King Kong for promotional uses, which culminates into a battle on Mount Fuji.

The King of the Monsters has arrived! When most people think of giant monsters, it is Godzilla that comes to mind. His popularity spans the entire globe, and his filmography is vast, both in number of adventures, and quality. However, even the King had to start from somewhere. And today, we are discussing those beginnings. From the mind of director Ishiro Honda, to the hands of Eji Tsubaraya, to the body of Haruo Nakajima, the King of Kaiju was brought to life in this classic film.
Madeline Brumby joins Jim for a heartwarming look at one of the most beloved "Big Monster" films made. The legendary "Gojira" from 1954. The version was unseen by many Americans until 2004 when it was released in the USA. Not to be confused with Americanized version that cut several poignant scenes and added scenes shot in California. Join Jim and Madeline as they reflect on this powerfully artistic film that was nominated for a Japanese Academy Award for Best Picture - losing to "Seven Samurai."On this week's episode of "Monster Attack!"Hirata, Haruo Nakajima

From June 30-July 3 of 2017, Godzilla suit actors Haruo Nakajima and Tom Kitagawa were featured guests at the Days of the Dead convention in Indianapolis, Indiana. This is the panel Q and A with the two actors from the convention. Unfortunately, this would also become one of Haruo Nakajima's final interviews and his final convention appearance. The two men answer questions about how they got involved in suit acting, working in the suits, working with miniatures, their thoughts on the American Godzilla films and more! With the clearance from the Days of the Dead con, KT is proud to present this panel discussion with two legendary kaiju performers! Listen and enjoy! Special thanks to Nick Adam Poling and Jonathan Crocetti for providing the audio, Christopher Marti for his post production work, and Corey Hannigan for translating at the panel! DISCLAIMER: The audio for this is a little rough, as the convention did not have a proper set up to accommodate some of the recording hardware. After a lot of post-production work, we are presenting it in the absolute best quality we were able to get from the elements available.

Byrd and Matt are joined by guest Chris (of the Other Sounds Podcast and Cosmic Monster) to discuss the work and life of Haruo Nakajima, who passed away on August 7, 2017. Nakajima is best known for playing Godzilla from 1954-1972, as well as playing Rodan, Mothra, Baragon, the Green Gargantua, Varan, various Ultraman kaiju, and many others. Nakajima was the most prolific suit actor of the Showa era and endured plenty of dangerous situations by playing monsters underwater, being flung through the air on wires, having explosives go off near his flesh, being buried alive, and more, all in the name of entertainment. We discuss Nakajima's start as a stuntman, working with Akira Kurosawa, his filmography, and our favorite Nakajima roles, as well as who he was to us and his legion of fans worldwide.

Notes We then dive into a discussion about Kaiju films, of which John is an avid lover. First we talk about what sort of films Kaiju movies are. We talk about the terms Kaiju (Strange Beasts, or Dai Kaiju Great Strange Beasts) and Tanko Setsu:* Miniature work and filming technique that helps create the feeling of weight and mass. John talks about how the special acting styles of "rubber suit acting" helped create the unique look of the film. We talk about the amazing endurance and discipline that the actors, particularly Haruo Nakajima had, to do these performances. *I looked for the spelling of this term and simply was unable to find it, if anyone would like to correct me, please shoot me an email with the correct spelling, and I'll update the notes." We then go into the history of the Kaiju genre. John discusses the care and pride that Japanese film makers took to make the Kaiju films. We also talk about our experience with Kaiju films as kids. While going through the movies from the very beginning through the 70's, Ultraman, and more. We also talk about the 2014 Godzilla, and Pacific Rim. John's Links First up here is, what I would think, is a very complete film list of giant monsters. All the way from 1920's to present day. It's the Giant Monster Movie List! It lists the year, and the giant monster that features in the film. Here is the wiki page that lists all the Kaiju monsters that have appeared in cinema (at least as far as we know). There's a lot.John mentions this a few times during the episode, it's Kaijucast. And finally here is the documentary Hail to the King that Kaijucast produced, there's a lot of great interviews with the original cast and crew of the original Godzilla movie. It's pretty cool. Quotes: "These are not high budget films, but they are distinctly Japanese, and there is a lot of hard work that goes into doing them. And we need to be proud of that hard work that goes into doing them." -John "The Kaiju movie genre is something that is dear to me." -John Credits Episode 19: Kaiju FilmsHosts: Frank Shaw and John BellistonProduced by Hobos in the Back RowScripting by John Belliston and Frank ShawEdited by: Frank ShawGraphic Design by: Nathan NewellIntro Music: Piano Sonata mvnt 1 by F.G.
