Michael John Cusick argues that our addictions and disordered sexual desires are really a misdirected effort to reach God and live in connection with Him. How can this be? The crude simulation is but at poor substitute for the real thing, for the Truth. Yet in this fallen world, sinners repeatedly fall into the snares. “I do not understand my own actions,”—Paul wrote in his letter to the Romans—"For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.” But like the prodigal son in the pigpen, we cannot but lift our eyes from the mud and think about the loving Father waiting for us at home. Join me, Bryan Hopkins, as I sit down with the woman who became a household name through the TV sensation "Tanked," yet behind the scenes, navigated a labyrinth of personal trials. Our conversation peels back the curtain to reveal Heather's Brooklyn heritage, her role in transforming a family business into an aquarium empire, and the Disney dreams that echoed throughout her journey. It's not just a chronicle of fame's ascent but also an honest confession of the often unseen struggles that accompany a life in the limelight.@smp.ink @stickypawsstudios @jpscomputers @elvismonroe @trubeautybytrevor5498 @WestCoastTattooParlor Sponsors: https://www.instagram.com/smp.ink/ Podcast Socials: https://www.instagram.com/heroesjourneypodcast/ https://www.facebook.com/heroesjourneypodcast https://twitter.com/HeroesJourneyP https://www.tiktok.com/@heroesjourneypodcast https://www.instagram.com/elvismonroeofficial/

Book stores later recategorised Frey's memoir as fiction instead of non-fiction. It was a concept that brought so much joy to their own family on vacations in the past, Heather and Jeff King knew that it was a business ripe for success in the Berkshires. After nearly three years open, a second location and further expansion into other locations, Shire Donuts just continues to put smiles on the faces of happy customers. And why not? Who doesn't love a great donut? It's just one of the recent ventures that Heather and Jeff have taken together after decades of working the traditional salaried 40-hour per week jobs. The other, being real estate, came when they were nudged along by their friends and colleagues Jay and Jennifer Nocher. True to form, Heather and Jeff work as a team leading with their own particular strengths as they focus on building long-term relationships for buyers and sellers. As they look to expand Shire into other retail locations, they are also considering the move into south county, and Great Barrington, in particular. We also cover in this episode: managing customer service with, often, long lines of customers (especially when the shops first opened), quality control "Heather-approved" donuts and training their workers ("donut artists), the product marketing and selling itself through social media and world-of-mouth, Heather and Jeff's first date at Ye Olde Forge, the dynamics of the current real estate market, tricks to keep donuts fresh after purchase (hint: it includes a container and a piece of bread), the value proposition of being open just three days per week, Dunkin' and Donut Man, expanding offerings of coffee with their partner Currency Coffee, working with their daughters Lauren and Chloe and more. I hope you enjoy my conversation with Jeff and Heather King. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/john-krol/support

In this episode, we have two incredible guests. I'm excited to bring two guests with some incredible experience and research behind them to talk about an important topic, which is bringing ACT to a multidisciplinary pain clinic setting. My guests are Physical Therapist Corinne Cooley and Psychologist Heather King. First, I'll tell you about Corinne. She is a Physical Therapist at the Stanford Pain Management Center and a Clinical Residency Faculty Member in the Stanford Orthopaedic Clinical Residency Program in California. She works with pain physicians and pain psychologists to help optimize complex patient care plans, and leads the exercise and movement portion of interdisciplinary outpatient programs.   Psychologist, Heather King, is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Peri-Operative Pain Medicine. She also serves as the Director of the Pain Psychology Fellowship at Stanford. Her areas of expertise are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for pain as well as insomnia, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. In this episode, we'll discuss an investigation that Corinne and Heather were both involved in. This study included an outpatient interdisciplinary approach with pain psychology using ACT as well as physical therapy, and compared that to traditional Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. In essence, this was an ACT plus PT intervention compared to a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy intervention alone. They got some interesting data and some results to share. They share how they went about investigating this topic and some of the outcomes as well as the patient population, and how ACT flowed through the psychology as well as the physical therapy part of care.   As you know, I'm a little biased toward mindfulness and acceptance-based approaches, to living life to the fullest, especially with chronic pain. That's why I'm so excited to share Corinne and Heather with you. They also use ACT as their primary form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in their treatment. Just a reminder, if you want to learn more about ACT for chronic pain, there are two great resources for you. The first is my book, which is called Radical Relief. The second is our course, ACT for Chronic Pain, here at the Integrative Pain Science Institute.   Take the time to read about some of the topics we're talking about with regard to chronic pain, both on how ACT can help the psychological aspect as well as the physical aspect of pain. Also, how Heather and Corinne worked together as this tight interdisciplinary team, which is important in the study they created. Hopefully, we can see more of this in healthcare settings. I highly recommend if you're a professional to download the paper. It's open access. You can read either the paper and follow along with the show or read the paper after. Without further ado, let's begin and meet Physical Therapist Corinne Cooley and Psychologist Heather King.   Love the show? Subscribe, rate, review, and share! Who's afraid of Jane Austen? Not Bret and certainly not Shira's ghoulfriend Dr. Heather King. Heather helps the necromancers get to the bottom of Jane's addiction to comedies of manners and the romance community's addiction to her. Heather's pick, Northanger Abbey, also proves that Miss Austen knows a thing or two about remixing genres in this gothic satire. Come for the high society and stay for the low comedy!

In 1962, inspired by Pope St. John XXIII's outreach to non-Christian artists, a gay communist picked up the Gospels and ended up making a film about Jesus. Nervous yet? But one thing you can't fault Pier Paolo Pasolini for is taking liberties with his source material - the dialogue in The Gospel According to Matthew is drawn entirely from that book of the Bible. The Vatican's newspaper once called this the best film ever made about Jesus. It certainly is one of the most unique adaptations, in the austerity of its approach (almost willful in its refusal to elaborate on Scripture), in its counterintuitive casting, in its portrayal of Our Lord's fierce urgency in delivering His message. There are many interesting moments to discuss, but the core question for Thomas and James is: Does the minimalism of the Gospel account translate well to the screen without embellishment, or does what leaves room for imagination on the page become barren in a visual medium? Memoirist and columnist Heather King (you may have read her work in Magnificat or Angelus) joins the show to discuss this, one of her favorite films. In today’s episode, I’m sitting down with Heather King - you may recognize her name from the writing she does in Magnificat on the witness of holy men and women. She also write about her experience with recovery, and how that healing process has impacted every area of her life - including the way she interacts with money. This was without a doubt one of the best conversations I have ever had on money - and one that I’m going to be re-listening to quite a bit as I continue to sort through my own money wounds and the ways Christ is inviting me to steward the gifts he’s given me. If you’re tired of the lack of good, meaningful conversation about finances and just how we should interact with money as Catholic women, sister, this letter is for you. Back in January of 2019 I received a Happy New Year Text and a lead on a great story for 2019/2020 from Heather King, “I just put a group together called Black Ice Project. We are 40 black folks headed to Antartica to run marathon in January 2020.” The average annual temperature in Antartica ranges from about −10°C on the Antarctic coast to −60°C at the highest parts of the interior. Near the coast the temperature can exceed +10°C at times in the summer and fall to below −40°C in the winter. Heather and her group of adventurers choose Steve Hibb’s Marathon Adventures to help them turn their dream of running a marathon on every continent a reality. The #blackiceeproject brought 27 African-American runners to Antarctica to run a marathon. And they all finished their races making the group the largest group of African-Americans to complete marathons and Half-marathons in Antarctica in history. On today’s episode we go behind with T Culpepper Glaze our correspondent, who was on the scene in Antartica. T interviewed several of members of the BIP for this episode, we were curious to know what would compel an individual to run a marathon under those conditions, how they prepared for the event and what lessons they learned along the way. Then we followed up with an interview Heather King once she thawed out from the trip. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/derek-oxley/support

She is raw and open about her past. On this edition of Restoring the Soul, Michael spends a good part of an hour speaking with returning guest, Heather King, about her brand new book, Ravished: Notes on Womanhood, that explores parts of her former life and comes to the conclusion that our deepest identity does not lie in our gender, our sexual orientation, our wounds. Our identity lies in Christ. Ravished is also her love letter to the Church for bringing her to full flower as a woman and as a human being. As you will hear in their conversation, Ravished is a book that is as challenging for men as it is for women. To learn more about Heather, visit her blog.In this podcast, we hope you will discover:Love doesn’t confine itself to one gender. The difference between victim hood and spiritual poverty. What it looks like for a woman to be a real warrior and a real feminist and to be a follower of Christ.

Author Heather King puts the rest of us to shame. She's written so many books she literally has no idea how many. She went through law school pretty much in a black out and managed to ace the bar. And she manages to embody the sort of joy that many seek and cannot find. At least part of this surely has to do with the fact that she very much walks the walk. Now sober over 30 years, King converted to Catholicism after having a crisis of faith and now writes a weekly column on arts, culture, faith and life for Angelus. It's been a long journey from the bar stools of Boston to the churches of LA and luckily King is a charming narrator. In this episode, we discuss knocking on a neighbor's door to buy beers off of him during brutal hangovers, being too cheap to become a gambling addict and weaning oneself off of romantic obsessions, among many other topics.

Heather King – author of Parched, Redeemed, Stripped, Stumble, Shirt of Flame, and Poor Baby – joins me on The Catholic Foodie Show today to talk about her latest book Loaded: Money and the Spirituality of Enough. Whether rich or poor, most of walk through our days wounded in the area of money and finances. We fear money. We fear not having enough money. We fear what would happen if we had too much money. We fear what people would think of us if they knew how much money we make and what we spend our money on. The way that we see and use money intimately affects the people in our lives. Most books about money are written to help you make more money. But what if more money isn't the answer? What if the real source of our fear is our relationship with money? In Loaded: Money and the Spirituality of Enough, Heather King shares her own story of recovery around money. In doing so, she opens a door of opportunity for us... an opportunity to examine our own relationship to money and to open that relationship up to healing by our loving God.  "So, as you've now assuredly figured out, unlike so many money books, mine is not about how to make more and consume more. It's about how to detach from the idea that our identity could possibly lie in how much or how little money we make or have. It's about discovering that money is a means of love and service. It's about learning that the real economy is “As you give, so shall you receive.” We get to follow the deepest desires of our heart. The money will come. And we'll want to share it. "That hasn't happened for me by praying a whole bunch of rosaries, holing up in my room, and hoping for the best. The solution for me and many people I know has involved clarity around numbers—how much we spend, how much we earn. It has been clarity around how we spend our time. And it's been community—meaning friends, a realistic acceptance of the fact that we're not going to change overnight, and laughs."
