If Marvel and DC are the big 2 and Superman and Spidey represent them then Image Comics is certainly number 3 and representing them would most certainly be Todd McFarlanes' 1992 creation SPAWN. The story of government assassin Al Simmons and his deal with the devil that made him into Hellspawn caught the eye of HBO Animation in the late 90s. Tonight we take a look at season 1 so turn out your lights!!

With the DCU heating up, Aaron & John take a trip to the Occult side of the DC Comics world giving their Constantine (2005) Reaction, Recap, Commentary, Analysis, & Spoiler Review!! Join Aaron Alexander & John Humphrey as they delve into Francis Lawrence's supernatural thriller Constantine (2005), starring Keanu Reeves (The Matrix, John Wick) as John Constantine, a damaged occult detective who can see half-breed angels and demons. Haunted by terminal lung cancer and his failed suicide attempt, Constantine faces down Hellspawn across L.A.'s underworld. When Detective Angela Dodson (Rachel Weisz, The Mummy, The Constant Gardener) recruits him to investigate her twin sister's death, he uncovers a demonic plot involving the Spear of Destiny and Lucifer's own son, Mammon. Iconic moments abound: the demonic exorcism in the morgue (“mirror—NOW!”), Constantine's rooftop standoff with Balthazar, the emotional death of Chas, and the epic finale where Constantine sacrifices himself—slitting his wrists to force Lucifer's hand—and convinces the Devil himself to save humanity from Mammon, plus, the sleek nightclub mind-read for Papa Midnite's bar and the Hellscape visual effects showcase the film's cult appeal. Our hosts break down every holy ritual, razor-sharp line, and dark hero's journey in this horror-drenched DC comic adaptation. Read transcriptHell hath no fury like a Hellspawn scorned, especially when that Hellspawn is leaping between platforms on your PlayStation 2! This week's episode of Play Comics dives headfirst into the fiery pits of “Spawn Armageddon,” the video game that attempted to cram the first 99 issues of Todd McFarlane's demonic anti-hero saga into button-mashing glory on PS2, Xbox, and GameCube. Chains will fly, capes will billow dramatically for no apparent reason, and we'll answer the burning question: can any game truly capture the essence of a character who essentially told both Heaven and Hell to take a hike? Joining us on this unholy quest is the supremely talented Rob Duenas from the Sketchcraft YouTube channel, whose pencil might actually be mightier than Spawn's chains. When Rob isn't dropping knowledge bombs about art techniques online, he's busy creating jaw-dropping illustrations for comic books – including the mind-bending “Spawn Kills Every Spawn.” Yes folks, our guest has literally drawn Spawn murdering alternate versions of himself, which makes him uniquely qualified to judge a game where Spawn murders… well, pretty much everything else. So grab your favorite necroplasm-infused beverage, wrap yourself in a sentient cape that definitely isn't judging your choice of pajamas, and prepare for an episode more twisted than Violator's family reunion. We're diving deep into the 2003 gaming experience that asked the important question: “What if we gave the angriest character in comics a bunch of weapons and unleashed him in a world that looks suspiciously like the developer's first attempt at a 3D environment?” The answer, dear listeners, involves a lot more jumping puzzles than anyone ever asked for. Learn such things as: Who would have thought that Rob knows so much about game development? Would anyone believe that you could cram 99 issues of comic story into a single game back in 2003? Is this really how we're going to let Spawn end in console games? And so much more! You can find Rob on on YouTube @Sketchcraft or his website Sketchcraft which has links to whatever social media places are still alive this week. Episode 39 - Murdock and Marvel: 1994 Part 2 1994 was a crazy year in the comics world, with both DC and Marvel continuing to crank out new books, even as other companies tried to claw their way into the market. Retailers and fans were nearly helpless as the onslaught of comics overwhelmed them, leading to one of the worst years in the history of modern comics. This is part 2 of the podcast. that will feature the year in Daredevil, the Spotlight story and the Takeaway for 1994. The Year in Daredevil Appearances: Daredevil #324-335, Daredevil Man without Fear #4 and #5, Daredevil Annual #10, Real Heroes #3, What if…? #58 and #64, Marvels #2-4, Marvel Comics Presents #150 - #151, Marvel Tales #285, Spider-Man Unlimited #6, Marvel Super-Heroes Megazine #1- #3, Spider-Man Megazine #1, Spectacular Spider-Man #218 and #219, Guardians of the Galaxy #54, Amazing Spider-Man #396 plus Death of Captain Marvel novel, Punisher Ashcan Edition novel, Marvel Limited: Fantastic Firsts novel and Marvels novel Writing: Dan G Chichester (324-327, 329-332), Gregory Wright (328, 333-335) Interviews: Chichester: https://www.manwithoutfear.com/daredevil-interviews/Chichester Wright: https://www.manwithoutfear.com/interviews/ddINTERVIEW.shtml?id=Wright Pencils: Scott McDaniel (324-327, 329-332), Sergio Cariello (328), Tom Grindberg (333-335) Inks: Hector Collazo and Michael Avon Oeming (324), Hector Collazo (325-327, 329, 331-332), Ariane Lenshoek-Pinharo (328), Collazo and Rich Rankin (330). Ray Kryssing (333) Don Hudson (334-335) The year begins with the final 2 installments of the Fall from Grace story arc. In it we see the ACTUAL return of Elektra (in an all white outfit) who fights alongside Matt Murdock to kill the ninjas and the Erynys that has part of her essence inside – which see does and absorbs the essence back into herself. Murdock ends up fighting the Hellspawn and after taking the weird virus to become human, it dies in the final fight with Snakeroot. Murdock uses the body to fake his death and become Jack Batlin. Ben Urich realizes his intern Sara Harrington was the one that hacked his files and shared Murdock's secret identity (hence Murdock faking his death). Next, we jump right into another multi-book story called Tree of Knowledge. This 6-part story with an extra interlude book (by a different creative team) starts in March with issue 326 and shows Daredevil and Captain America taking on a gang of hackers called System Crash which is being led by Baron Wolfgang Von Strucker of Hydra. Since this is the only full story this year, this will be our spotlight story for the week. The year ends with the first half of another named storyline Fathoms of Humanity that will end in February 1995. Written by Gregory Wright and Penciled by Tom Grindberg while Chichester and McDaniel work on Elektra: Root of Evil (which was promoted extensively at the end of these books). In this story we see Daredevil follow a homeless man into the sewers where a tribe of people are living including their “King” whom Daredevil rescued Wilson Fisk's wife Vanessa from back in the original Frank Miller days. Daredevil defeats his old foe – which endears him to the rest of the community (and causes the King to seek out an altar to summon some creature to enact revenge). We also see him take on Bushwacker (another old foe with a gun for an arm). During this story we also see Kingpin who's working out of an abandoned subway car as he slowly starts working towards regaining his power and influence. This Week's Spotlight: Daredevil #326 March 1994 “Tree of Knowledge Part 1” through Daredevil #332 September 1994 “Tree of Knowledge Finale” Recap Why We Picked This Story Daredevil Rapid Fire Questions The Takeaway A great year if you can get through the junk Questions or comments We'd love to hear from you! Here we go, folks! Welcome YouTube's Matt Draper on once again to discuss one of the most iconic 90s creations in the comics industry: SPAWN. Episode 35 - Murdock and Marvel: 1992 Part 2 Well, here we are. Image starts a new creator-owned era, even as the man who created the superhero sensation dies, along with one of his creators. 1992 was a very big year for changes. This is part 2 of the podcast. that will feature the year in Daredevil, the Spotlight story and the Takeaway for 1992. The Year in Daredevil Appearances: Daredevil #300-311, Daredevil Annual #8, Punisher Annual #5, Web of Spider-Man Annual #8, Infinity War #1-4, Death's Head 2 #4, Fantastic Four #367-368 and #370, Alpha Flight #111, Marc Spector: Moon Knight #41 and #43, Marvel Comics Presents #113, Spider-Man Special Edition #1, What if…? #44, Daredevil Gangwar and Infinity Gauntlet graphic novels and Marvel Masterworks #21 and #22 Writing: Dan G Chichester (300-309) , Glenn Herdling (310-311) Pencils: Lee Weeks (300), M.C. Wyman (301-303), Ron Garney (304), Scott McDaniel (305-311) Inks: Al Williamson (300), Chris Ivy (301-303, 305), Bud LaRosa (304, 306-311), The year begins with the huge double issue that concludes the Last Rites storyline that began late in 1991. Daredevil has been enlisted by SHIELD to take down Kingpin and by extension Hydra who is bankrolling his media empire. Last week we saw the pieces get put in place and during our spotlight this week, we'll see how this terrific story ends. Next, we see Daredevil take on one of his oldest foes, the Owl, in a solid 3-book story arc. Outside of the spotlight book, “34 Hours” from May 1992 is one of the best single-story books in the last few years. In it we see Daredevil saving lives across a 34-hour timeframe. We are then introduced to a new villain, Surgeon General, who's picking up men in clubs, drugging them and then operating on them to steal body parts for the black market. To set a trap for the Surgeon General, Daredevil sets a trap using Peter Parker as bait. Fortunately for Peter, the trap worked with the help of Parker's secret identity, Spider-Man. Next, we get another multi-book story arc involving the Nomad and Punisher called Dead Man's Hand. This 7-part story arc that takes place in Las Vegas shows various crime factions all trying to get a piece of the Kingpin's empire now that he's not there to lead it. During this event we also see what has happened to the kingpin. Among the groups fighting for Kingpin's empire include – The Hand, Yakuza, the Maggia, Hydra, Hammer Industries, Andreas and Andrea Strucker (Known as Fenris?). This story was hard to follow as several parts of the story appear in other books (parts 3&4 were in Nomad & Punisher books) and part 6 was somewhere else but was communicated to the reader. After Vegas, Matt Murdock returns to New York and we finish out the year with a multi-book story arc with Calypso, the Nameless One and a Daredevil doppelganger known as Hellspawn from the Infinity War Crossover. This story centers around a Haitian refugee named Yves Chapoteau who is seeking asylum in the U.S. During the story Calypso performs a voodoo ritual on Daredevil and enslaves him to her. He is able to escape by destroying her magic soul-possessing jars which also free some other zombie refugees who attack her. In an epilogue of this story, we see two people digging up someone's grave. New Powers, Toys or Places: Back in Vegas for the Dead Man's Hand story arc. New Supporting Characters: Yves Chapoteau (Haitian refugee who seeks out Matt Murdock for his asylum case) New Villains: Surgeon General (woman seducing men and then stealing organs for the black market), Hellspawn (Daredevil doppleganger from Infinity War crossover who's killed by Calyspo) This Week's Spotlight: Daredevil #300 January 1992 “Last Rites Part 4: Long Live the King” Recap Why We Picked This Story The Takeaway Writers still matter! Man Without Fear: Kuljit Mithra's Daredevil site contains a staggering collection of resources about our hero, including news, interviews and comic details. The American Comic Book Chronicles: Published by TwoMorrows, these volumes provide an excellent analysis of American comics through the years. Because these volumes break down comic history by year and decade they are a great place to get a basic orientation on what is happening across the comic industry at a particular point in time. Joshua and Jamie Do Daredevil: A fantastic podcast that does a deep-dive into Daredevil comics. This ran from 2018-2020, and covered most of the first volume of Daredevil, and was a fun way to get an in-depth look at each issue of Daredevil from 1-377. My Marvelous Year: This is a reading-club style podcast where Dave Buesing and friends chose important or interesting books from a particular year to read and discuss. This helped me remember some fun and crazy stories, and would be a great companion piece to Murdock and Marvel for those who want more comic-story-specific coverage. BOOKLIST The following books have been frequently used as reference while preparing summaries of the comic history segments of our show. Each and every one comes recommended by Dan for fans wanting to read more about it! Licari, Fabio and Marco Rizzo. Marvel: The First 80 Years: The True Story of a Pop-Culture Phenomenon. London: Titan Books, 2020. This book is sort of a mess, as the print quality is terrible, and Titan doesn't even credit the authors unless you check the fine print. It's like this was published by Marvel in the early 60s! But the information is good, and it is presented in an entertaining fashion. So its decent, but I would recommend you see if you can just borrow it from the library instead of purchasing. Wells, John. American Comic Book Chronicles: 1960-1964. Raleigh: Two Morrows, 2015. Not cheap, but a fantastic series that is informative and fun to read. Wright, Bradford. Comic Book Nation: The Transformation of Youth Culture in America. Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, 2001. This is the revised edition. Marvel Year By Year: A Visual History. New York: DK Publishing, 2022. The academic in my rails at using information from any work that doesn't have an author credit, but this is a decent (if very surface) look at each year in the history of Timely / Marvel from 1939 to 2021. Cowsill, Alan et al. DC Comics Year by Year: A Visual History. New York: DK Publishing, 2010. Because its nice to occasionally take a peek at what the Distinguished Competition is up to. Dauber, Jeremy. American Comics: A History. New York, W.W. Norton & Company, 2022. An excellent, relatively compact history of the domestic comic industry from its 19th century origins through to recent 21st century developments. An excellent successor to Bradford Wright's Comic Book Nation.
While we can see all the flaws, this latest attempt to reboot the lovable Hellspawn is really a good B-movie horror that would benefit from better marketing. We're also talking about the BBC comedy Ludwig, plus this week's 'DVD from a charity shop' is In the Name of the King (which no amount of good marketing could have saved!).
Spawn #87 - Story - Todd McFarlane & Brian Holguin, Pencils - Greg Capullo, Inks - Danny Miki, Letters - Tom Orzechowski, Colors - Dave Kemp, Brian Haberlin & Dan Kemp Ethan Crone's interest in the urban myth of a "Hellspawn" has grown into an obsession. When a series of interviews lead to uncertain conclusions, he takes matters into his own hands. While spending the night in Rat City, Ethan is terrorized by something he can't identify, but it may finally provide an ending to his search.
MAGNETO WAS RIGHT ... Right?
Spawn #82 - Story - Todd McFarlane & Brian Holguin, Pencils - Greg Capullo, Inks - Danny Miki, Letters - Tom Orzechowski, Colors - Brian Haberlin & Dan Kemp As Spawn now knows that Billy Kincaid has returned as an intangible Hellspawn and is the force of evil behind all the recent murders and gruesome acts of violence around New York City. He even meets with Twitch and learns that that he and the detective share more in common than the supernatural link established when Spawn saved his life. Will that be enough to allow them to defeat Kincaid? Only time will tell.
Spawn #74 - Story - Todd McFarlane & Brian Holguin, Pencils - Greg Capullo, Inks - Danny Miki, Letters - Tom Orzechowski, Colors - Brian Haberlin & Dan Kemp As Sam and Twitch examine the file on Al Simmons that Cogliostro left with them, it becomes clear that they don't have all the pieces to the puzzle. They do know that Jason Wynn may have a lot of the answers, but since they can't get to Wynn they plan to go after Spawn himself again for the answers to their questions. What they don't know is that Spawn is engaged in a life and death struggle with The Heap and when the dust settles, it isn't the Hellspawn who comes out on top. When Cogliostro and Bootsy come upon the scene of that battle it becomes apparent, that Spawn is not present on Earth, Heaven or Hell. Does this mean Spawn has been erased from existence? If so, who is The Heap working for and just how powerful are they?

This week we read one of the most popular characters of the 90s and Image comics, Spawn. From Eisner Hall of fame nominee Todd McFarlane, after a hit on Al Simmons is successful, he's burned to death and sent to Hell. Making a deal with the devil, Simmons agrees to become a Hellspawn and is allowed to see his wife Wanda one last time. Spawn is returned to the living realm with a severely burned body, and a demonic guardian named the Violator. Black History/Pride/Excellence I chat once more with Demetrius Holt aka Hellspawn_Cosplay, about his current project #Blerdandpowerful. Born in darkness, sworn to justice... Directed by Mark A.Z. Dippé, Spawn is the fantasy, action, superhero film based on the Image Comics character of the same name created by Todd McFarlane. Luke and Jae take on this 1997 cult classic which stars Michael Jai White in the title role - depicting Spawn's origin story. Covert government assassin Al Simmons (Michael Jai White) is killed after being double-crossed by his boss, Jason Wynn (Martin Sheen). Upon arriving in Hell, Simmons is offered an opportunity to return to Earth if he's willing to lead an evil army. He accepts, and is reincarnated as a "Hellspawn" - a twisted, horribly disfigured version of his former self. However, Spawn serves as a force of good, much to the dismay of the Devil's henchman, a wicked clown (John Leguizamo).
Screw It, Always Go For 2By Roger CormierIt's funny how in football, "analytics" is just another way of saying "go for it, coward" and "pretend your kicker doesn't exist." It's funny and it's true, which is even better. College football is where gimmicks go to die, but aggressively eschewing the kicking game has made it to the NFL. That doesn't mean the NCAA universe still doesn't bang its head against the wall when playing the percentages doesn't happen to work out.In Alabama's loss to LSU over the weekend, Nick Saban went for two when up 15-14 and 21-17 in the fourth quarter. The Crimson Tide failed to convert both times. Saban was questioned about going for two afterwards, and the coaching legend resorted to wryly asking if the reporters wanted to see the chart he consulted that told him to do that. Here's the thing, and I kind of hate to say it: Nick Saban is right. If you're up one late in the game, you wanna be up three instead of two, and you wanna be up six instead of five. Where Saban screwed up probably is not being more innovative in drawing up two-point plays. Twisting the knife, LSU won when Brian Kelly and his totally normal accent went for two in overtime instead of conventionally tying it up to force a second OT, and succeeded. Brian Kelly didn't have to offer to show his chart because he won the damn thing.Dave Pasch is usually an intelligent play-by-play man for ESPN, but perhaps his years having to deal with Bill Walton have dulled his brain synapses. He was totally confused late Saturday night when California went for two after scoring a touchdown to lower their deficit to USC to 8. For years now, football fans have gotten to know the strategy of going for two when down a touchdown late. The thinking makes a lot of sense: if you go for two and make it, then you're only down six, and if you score another touchdown and kick an extra point, holy moly, you're up one instead of tied, and don't have to potentially deal with overtime when anything goes. If you go for two and don't make it, hey that's cool: you can just go for two again if you score another touchdown to tie it up. Theoretically, you can wait to go for two to avoid a tie after the second touchdown, but defenses still presumably are more prepared for that possibility, and there's maybe less pressure on your offense doing it the fun way. (For what it's worth, Cal made the conversion but didn't score again, losing by six instead of seven.)The problem that suffocated baseball last decade is an annoyance in football today: veteran players griping about "analytics". They grew up believing going for two was only done in an emergency and going for it on fourth down in the middle of the field was something Bill Belichick infamously tried once in an AFC Championship Game and failed in, lesson learned. They equate "analytics" to 3D chess. It's a branding problem. If the powers that be simply called it "being aggressive" instead of "analytics" there would be much less griping. Because that what it is: being aggressive. Putting pressure on the defense. Trusting your quarterback. You know, the pillars of American values. And now, bonus cover art! This is a public episode. The one where Green Blooded Bastard watches Spawn. In this movie, Spawn gets shot, stabbed, punched and tends to fail quite a bit... fuck it, Spawn! It's a lot like the comic and dated, but still fun enough.

We're here today, to speak about a pop culture classic! For today's subject, we're going back in time, to 1997! Twenty four years ago, was a time of very few special effects, to the point where this movie was dubbed the "special effects movie event" of the time. Whether that hurt or helped this movie is really up for debate! We're, of course, speaking about the Michael Jai White & John Leguizamo movie, Spawn! "Covert government assassin Al Simmons (Michael Jai White) is killed after being double-crossed by his boss, Jason Wynn (Martin Sheen). Upon arriving in Hell, Simmons is offered an opportunity to return to Earth if he's willing to lead an evil army. He accepts, and is reincarnated as a "Hellspawn" -- a twisted, horribly disfigured version of his former self. However, Spawn serves as a force of good, much to the dismay of the Devil's henchman, a wicked clown (John Alberto Leguizamo)." We have MANY thoughts about this movie, but one of the shining stars, is the performance of John Leguizamo! Leguizamo brings the Violator to life, and what otherwise might seem like an exposition contest! Like any other topic that we speak about though, it's at least worth the first time watch, if you haven't seen it yet. Especially because it's one of the first super hero movies, at a time where they weren't as popular as they are at this moment in history! In this final episode in my 3 part mini-series exploration into the topic of American religion and how to has come to be so corrupt and intertwined within the politics of the right, I delve into the legacy of RJ Rushdoony, the father of Christian Reconstructionism and Dominionism. I talk a bit about some of the officials, political, legal and military, that count themselves amongst these ranks as well as some of the organizations working to further the horrible goals of this ideology. If you'd like to listen to the previous episodes you can find the links below: Part 1: Episode 09 – How to Piss Off Jesus Part 2: Episode 10 – The Hellspawn of the Religious and the Right
In this continuation of my mini-series into religion and politics in America I look into the when, who and how of the creation of union between the political right and the religious southerners in the US. From convention speeches, private schools, the IRS to Reagan I cover the basics of how we ended up in the absolute clusterfuck of a mess we find ourselves today as Americans. Still dealing with a damaged throat, it sucks but here's another episode. Shorter than I'm used to doing but I'm working within my limitations. In this episode I tell the story of the Cleansing of the Temple, my favorite biblical story. Now I'm a non-believer but this story has such a clear and "good" ethic to it that I can't help but love it. It has a clear anti-capitalistic message and shows Jesus at his angriest, which I also appreciate greatly. I tell this story in order to lead in to, what I see, as perfectly valid criticism of modern American pseudo-Christians, their leaders and their practices. This is the first of a little mini-series dissecting some particularly toxic strains of ideology present in many so-called Christian denominations today. Coming soon will be Dominionism and the "Southern Strategy". Part 2: Episode 10 – The Hellspawn of the Religious and the Right Part 3: Episode 17 – The Dominionist Infection
In this Chapter, Jillian and Jerry invite special speaker Simone DeMilo into our class to help us analyze the extremely terrible parenting of Amy and Alan Matthews. We try to figure out just what could be going on in their heads when raising that Hellspawn they call Morgan. Also, why someone is shoving their box in Cory's face, the tragic story of silver mittens and a helluva lot of nudity.
