I've known my guest Wes Robinson for more than a decade, beginning when we started at our new jobs together at PennLive/The Patriot News. When it comes to friends, I tend to seek out fun, critical thinkers. Someone that can challenge me and make me laugh. Someone who will get right to the line and roundly cross it. Someone who has a strong moral character and a diabolical sense of humor. After I left journalism, I worked to bring Wes with me to the Pennsylvania Senate. He joined me at the Capitol for several years. We'd see each other at press conferences, events and at our semi-regular “journalism survivors guild” lunch. Then in 2021, Wes took an amazing opportunity to become the press secretary for the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. During that same time, I decided to run a mile in all then 121 Pennsylvania State Parks. So, as I was discovering the outdoors, Wes was doing much of the same thing professionally. Wes was one of only three people to joined me on my 121 In 21 Challenge.  On a sweltering day in July, Wes ran one mile at seven state parks with me. It was yet another example of him being a great supporter and going the extra mile – so to speak – for a friend. As I was developing this podcast in 2022, I knew its success depended on whether I could get guests. From the very beginning, Wes worked hard to make sure I was able to find guests that would highlight our amazing outdoor spaces. Wes is the sort of person that loves seeing his friends succeed. And he'll do as much as he can to introduce you to the right people, send the email to the right organization or bring you along to a networking event. Not to curry favors. Not to make himself look good. But to make you look good. This podcast would not exist without Wes. His generosity, hard work and legitimacy in the outdoor space is the only reason I can make Hemlocks to Hellbenders. So, what is this episode about? How awesome Wes is? A little. What work is going on at DCNR? Absolutely. But it's also about two friends whose journey of falling in love with the outdoors is connected. It's about what can be done with the right people at the right time. And it's about what we can all do to support each other and our wonderful public lands. On this episode, I speak with Wes Robinson. Wes is the press secretary for the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and my very good friend. Be sure to support our 2025 sponsors:Keystone Trails AssociationPurple Lizard MapsPennsylvania Parks and Forests FoundationSisters' SunflowersSupport the showVisit our website to learn more about the podcast, to purchase merch and to find out about our incredible sponsors. The state tree of Pennsylvania, the Eastern Hemlock is a majestic, ancient tree species found across the Eastern United States and Canada that offers shelter, food, and protection for over 120 vertebrates. It also has special characteristics that make it much more effective at storing carbon than most other tree species. But unfortunately, an invasive insect called the hemlock woolly adelgid has been wreaking havoc on the Eastern Hemlock, and as climate change worsens, these pests have been able to invade further and further north. Today, we explore why Eastern Hemlocks are declining, why it matters, and how we can protect them moving forward. With special guest Dr. Danielle Ignace: Assistant Professor of Indigenous Natural Sciences at the University of British Columbia. The eastern hemlock and North American beech once thrived from Maine to Georgia, casting shade on trout streams, nourishing wildlife large and small, and gracing uncounted valleys, mountainsides, parks, and backyards. These trees now face tragic decimation by exotic insects and pathogens. Tim Palmer’s photos record the splendor of the cherished hemlock and beech in the same way that pictures of iconic, historic buildings commemorate classic landmarks gone the way of the wrecking ball. And yet, as Palmer underscores in his final chapter, the lessons learned as we address the fate of these trees can help us chart a better course for all wooded landscapes in the years ahead. This story of loss, scientific inquiry, and prospective recovery is vital to understanding nature in our time. As an act of artistic preservation, a report on the science vital to the survival of these trees, and a call to action, Twilight of the Hemlocks and Beeches assures a lasting legacy for this irreplaceable forest community. With more than one hundred exquisite full-color photographs, this book is a must-have for outdoor enthusiasts, natural historians, ecologists, and all lovers of nature. Tim Palmer, an award-winning author and photographer, has written and photographed twenty-six books about the environment, forests, and adventure travel. First Exposure to the Outdoors My Dad worked for the State Department which at the time meant he was a CIA spy. They were running money over to the Chinese nationalists but whatever, he got tired of that and settled down. He landed in Central Connecticut where there are these awesome trees hemlock trees that grow up and they're the perfect climbing trees, they couldn't invent a better tree for climbing. So I lived in the trees when I was a kid. We didn't have TV or if we did we were allowed to watch like McHale's Navy every Tuesday or something. We got into lots of trouble and we were the original free range kids. One of our favorite things to do was climb into the trees or in the apple apple orchards and steal apples and that's what we lived on, apples. Hemlocks get huge and we'd climb up and hang on pretend we're in the crow's nest. I used to climb around on those and there was this cliff in the neighborhood. We would rake the leaves and my dad is an environmentalist always hated burning leaves. So we would throw them off the cliff you know just to let them decompose, that became our crash pad. It was big springy and bouncy. We'd we'd climb around on those cliffs until we fell and hit the leaves, and then we'd bounce off and do it again. We had a lot of fun. My dad was also a sailor in the summer and so we spent a lot of time on the sailboat. So I got really familiar with knots and ropes and rigging. When they packed me into a traveling summer camp in 1969 I went to the Tetons. My climbing lesson it turns out was with Pete Lev. He was my first climbing instructor. I've actually been hanging out with him a little bit and we've reconnected. I was probably climbing five eight, you know here's this 14 year old and I knew all the knots and stuff and was climbing 5.8. People ask me you know how long have I been climbing and I'm like I never stopped, I grew up climbing. Research using the predator beetle offers new hope in the battle to save the state's hemlock trees from the invasion of woolly adelgid, an invasive species that is devastatingly wiping out the hemlock tree population across the South, which matters because the hemlock is important for having a healthy forest.

When the glaciers moved in across Indiana, the enormous sheets of ice brought with it a few hitchhikers. Little pinecones, less than an inch tall, dropped to the ground as the ice melted and were planted in Southern Indiana. From these tiny seeds came large, coniferous trees know as Eastern Hemlocks (Tsuga canadensis).
